They actually beat Joe Jackson to the opening line by a couple of years. This is 1976. The first UK Punk Single. @@hanierfamily Joe Jackson said in his autobiography ''A Cure For Gravity'' that his song was inspired by the opening line of ''New Rose'' by The Damned. The Damned, as it was said some while back, that they were the first punk band signed. I don't know for sure if this is true but they are still one of my favorite bands of all time. They did it right.
New Rose predates Joe Jackson. This is the first recognised UK punk single from 1976. Original guitarist Brian James wrote most of the first album including this.
You two lovelies are on a roll today, reacting to two of my all-time favourite bands within only about an hour (The other band being Rush) 😁👍 Admittedly, I do like their later stuff even better that was more New Wave than Punk, but they've always had a great sense of humour, and it's so cool they're still active today, sometimes even still playing shows in their original line-up 😊 And if you decide to listen to some more stuff by The Damned one day, I'd suggest 'Stranger On The Town' 😊

To us kids in 77 in the UK the Damned were part of the big 4 punk groups: Pistols, Stranglers and Clash. By the way, Jones, Cook and Strummer used to frequent the Stranglers gigs in 75. I have seen the Damned a few times over the years - ranging from brilliance to the most violent gig i have ever attended. Traditionally, it's generally accepted, the first three Punk records are, The Ramones debut album(April 76), The Damned with the first single(Oct 76) and The Saints album, Stranded(Sept 76). It would be interesting to see reactions to some of these, The Saints are a criminally under valued band, and did some tremendous stuff... I didn't get into it until much later. One band I found much much later were Stiff Little Fingers, from Northern Ireland. I got a couple of requests. The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You I don't know if The Tourists ever reached Canada, but they did reach Australia with their cover of the Dusty Springfield song. The band toured Australia, and split up when they were done with the country. You might recognise a couple of members. and now a question and suggestion. Are you guys open to watching a short interview and song performance on Countdown? My friends and I were at the taping of Countdown when Iggy Pop was on the show. He quite generously threw spittle our way. Didn't get me. There was a bit of commotion during that taping and we all hated Iggy Pop that night. lol. Not sure if you guys are strict on a song only policy, or if you are open for 4 and half video with interview and performance. Countdown: Iggy Pop interview and 'I'm Bored' studio performance (1979)
LOL We know the Samantha Fox version and The Bay City Rollers versions of I Only Want To Be With You, but we haven't heard The Tourists do it. We added it to the list as well as your Iggy Pop request. Thanks
@@hanierfamily watch the entire interview and performance of Iggy Pop on countdown. It's one of the highlites of Countdown history. He was horrible, and he really upset us Countdown kids. You can hear us going ''ugh'' during I'm Bored. Iggy thought he'd give us a sprinkle. I also saw The Tourists doing Countdown, and they didn't seem like happy campers when the cameras were off. The band split as soon as they got on the plane to leave Oz. Two members went on to bigger things. You'd recognise them. I hope you don't find out who they are prior to watching the video, and I hope nobody drops a comment giving it away.
@@hanierfamily i like The Tourists version more than Dusty's, and i won't even comment on the other two artists. I got to see the tourists live in Sydney and they were crap. thankfully a couple of them moved on to bigger things, as liveitup had stated.

I also got to see The Tourists live in Sydney and they were not good. not surprising they split up as soon as they returend to england. lots of style no substance.. thankfully a couple of them employed some substance with the style and got to own the charts for the rest of the decade.
@@DogInSpace ha ha, a lot of people thought it was funny. That appearance had been replayed on Rage and Countdown specials through out the years. I've watched all the ''Countdown'' specials and that Iggy Pop one still makes me sick. The thing is, my friends and I did feel violated by seeing this man (who I had not heard of at that point) behaving that way, and then spitting on us. It really shocked us because at that age (we were just 10/11 years old) we did not expect a performer to spit at us like that. We did see Countdown as being like a youth centre where the producers had a duty of care. I mean, Countdown was like a place you go to after school or on weekends. I did see girls grab the legs of musicians and performers, and I saw hands poking and gropping below the belt, but having that idiot spit on us like that was horrible. there were a lot of upset kids after he walked off the stage.
That is the first punk rock single ever released. The Damned were in it from the beginning with bands like the Clash, Sex pistols, the Stranglers, Buzzcocks
Glad you liked this manic sound. I loved punk as a teenager in the 70's for the radical drum and guitar sound. I wasn't interested in the scene just loved the sound. Being a science, rail and aviation geek I didn't fit in to punk or goth or any scene. Well the geek scene but we didn't have scenes. Oh music geek also. Hanier's rocking the tube once again.
Useless factoid: Smash It Up (Part 1) was written by Captain Sensible as a tribute to one of his musical idols...the late great Marc Bolan. Also The Damned toured with T. Rex on their final Dandy In The Underworld tour in early 1977, six months before Marc Bolan was killed in a car crash.
So daves vocals weren't great? You need to hear other songs by the damned. As one critic said and i agree with daves vocals are the most melodic of not just punk but most singers. Check out their song Eloise.
Kia ora hello my friends hay I've seen the DAMMED 3 time's and the last time i walked out after about 4 songs Captain sensible was a complete jerk i got outside and most of my friends who were there had beat me to it and for the same reason i can't stand in front of any musician who thinks they are better than the punters and their poo don't stink it's supposed to be all for one and one for all . If they don't understand that without us they're just having a jam and without them we are standing around looking at our feet wondering what to do when they forget that I'm not interested in them at all i haven't listened to suicidal tendencies since 2012 the last time i saw them and will never listen to them again and i was a fanatical fan from 1985-2012
The third punk band after Iggy and the Ramones….love the Damned…..not anywhere near the posers the Pistols were…….New Rose was about Punk…they knew they had a New Rose….a new sound and genre…..they were recorded before the Sex Pistols……the pistols were nowhere near the 1st punk band

They had 2 albums in 1977. New Rose came out in 1976. And if you ask some of our viewers, Punk never went away.
I got a couple of requests.
The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You
I don't know if The Tourists ever reached Canada, but they did reach Australia with their cover of the Dusty Springfield song.
@@liveitup67 Sorry to say it LiveItUp, but I was one out of many punks that was laughing at Iggy Pop's shenanigans on Countdown.
This is neat....neat....neat.
Dammed Dammed Dammed! :) x
Not influenced by the Sex Pistols at all. This was the the first punk single ever released in Oct 76. Way before Joe Jackson too.
The Black album is worth a listen very prod rocky
Oh Lord you see where Marilyn Manson came from (bless her) Happy talk from Captain sensible is always amusing with his happy c***
They were the first punk band on major label great sounds and influenced guns and roses because they played there music
just saying .... IMO The Damned are great
A reaction to Billy Joel falling of the rain
That is the first punk rock single ever released. The Damned were in it from the beginning with bands like the Clash, Sex pistols, the Stranglers, Buzzcocks
B4 the sex pistols 1976.
Weird eh MC5 et al and the Damned got it down the first or is that just the UK. First punk single I ever bought 'appen.
I've been a music geek since I (Chris) was 9.
Next you guys should react to Ignite,if you haven't already.
This song was way before "is she really going out with him" by Joe Jackson. Doh.
One of the best Punk tracks of all time.
Please review Smash It Up Parts 1 & 2 by The Damned. Thank you.
Mr Sensible .
WOT ! 😆 🤣
Your wife is utterly adorable. Is that weird to say? Probably
In 79 Dammed drummer ripped out me ear ring at a gig on the Isle of White . Funny as feck! Was well happy tha scabies ruined me ear...hahaha...bless x
What about ruby Tuesday rolling stones but I think Melanie's version better
So daves vocals weren't great? You need to hear other songs by the damned. As one critic said and i agree with daves vocals are the most melodic of not just punk but most singers. Check out their song Eloise.
grimly fiendish
To us Brits this was the first Punk Anthem. Excuse me His voice isn't good have a word with yourself.
