  • Language challenge between a Swedish guy and a Danish girl. I'm trying to speak Danish and she's trying to speak Swedish. The languages are sometimes very similar and sometimes very different. We filmed this in central wonderful Copenhagen. We had so much fun. This is our third language challenge video together, always with many laughs.

    I started trying to learn Danish but the pronunciation was crazy so I started learning Swedish instead. This channel is great. Kristina is hilarious, so it Martin, it's a fantastic combo.

    When she "overdoes" it, that's because that's how Swedish sounds to us Danes. Like it's *very* up and down in tone compared to what we're used to in the very flat Danish language.
    It's hard for us to imitate Swedish without making it sound sort of "mocking", and I suppose the same is the case for Swedes wanting to try to pronounce things in Danish. I think it's because the languages are so similar that it sounds (to ourselves) like we're basically just speaking a silly version of our own languages.
    If Danes or Swedes were asked to pronounce something in Croatian, Portuguese or whatever we'd have no idea if it sounded funny, weird, exaggerated or whatever as the languages are so far from our own. We'd just give it a go and hope for the best.
    But because our two languages are so similar it basically just sounds (to ourselves) like we're making fun of the other person. We notice the smaller differences between the languages and then exaggerate them to make it sound Danish/Swedish. Like a Swede might "overdo" the "Soft D" (like in Røde etc) because that's a difference that really stands out to Swedes. Danes might "overdo" the Swedish "melody" or "singing" rhythm because that really stands out to us, another thing could be Swedish sounds like the Swedish "K" in Kärlek, the Swedish "SK" sound in Skägg etc. as they're sounds we simply do not have. So it'd likely sound like we were "overdoing" those sounds or like we were trying to make fun of the Swedish language. :P

      I’m learning Norwegian but another person said that the Danish language is actually not flat they do sing just not in the way Norwegians and Swedes do

      Which language do you understand the most?

    • @REDnBLACKnRED
      @REDnBLACKnRED 4 роки тому +6

      @@CaptainH. I think that would be Danish. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but Danes and Norwegians can converse with each other in their own languages without any issue, these languages are the closest. Swedes and Norwegians can understand each other as well, to a slightly lesser extent but still enough to have intelligible conversations. Swedes and Danes not so much. Danes probably understand more Swedish than Swedes do Danish. But this guy speaks Scanian, a dialect of Swedish that is almost a mix of both Danish and Swedish (Scania was part of Denmark in history), they can understand each other somewhat.

      That is not always true. There are some words in Danish and Norweigan which there is not even the sligthest of chances I as a Swede will understand. Because those words are not even remotely close to the Swedish language ^^.. And that comes from somebody who lives very close to Denmark.

    Seems to me you more than just like eachother. Nice to see! As a Dutch always funny to hear you speak and not make too much of it at first. Nevertheless: yesterday I was looking at Norwegian commentary on icespeedskating (old Olympic games, we always have a battle with them so nice to hear their side) for hours and I understood virtually everything. It takes a bit getting used to but then I am fine. Danish written is very similar to Norwegian, may be even easier but spoken it takes more getting used to. Well: much more. Swedish is easier to understand spoken but jut a tad less so when written (but still pretty easy). Without any lessons there are just four languages I could read and understand right away: DK, S, N and D. German is may be closest, but difficult to assess since it is mandatory at the higher education levels for years here in NL. I have to say that there seem to be far more words in German that are completely off when compared to Scandi languages but again I am no longer objective due to longtime prior exposure.

    • @TheSwedishLad
      @TheSwedishLad  4 роки тому +1

      There are def. obvious similarities from southern Swedish and Danish to Dutch, and Norwegian tags along nicely. Languages and the way we speak travel, and yes, once you start exposing yourself to a language, the pieces of the puzzle slowly fall in place. And Icespeedskating commentary is not exactly like table tennis, so it's a good place to start :)

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 4 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your reply! Yes similar. Icesspedskating, tabletennis..icehockey...I have seen Swedish documentaries on Jan Ove Waldner and the Soviet Ice hockey team. Fantastic, another perspectie although Waldner and Soviet icehockey were highly regarded in NL too. But still, the Swedish documentaries were excellent so really worthwhile to invest some time in the language in order to understand it. Thx again and looking forward to your next video.
