Velella Velella

A recent invasion of these by-the-wind sailors on the north coast of California. Velella velella is a monospecific genus of hydrozoa. It is not a singular creature. It's a community of hydrozoa that forms a sea raft with a little sail and hanging tentacles to prey on plankton. Its a cosmopolitan free-floating hydrozoan that lives on the surface of the open ocean.
