- Little, transparent, blue-ish sea creatures are washing up on the shore at beaches in San Diego County. San Diego residents are taking to social media to ask the question: what are they?
The tiny blobs you might have seen during your walk on the beach are a species known as Velella velella. The creatures are also known as "by-the-wind sailors." According to UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the creatures float on the ocean surface and are moved across the water by the wind.

Born (1962) and raised on Catalina Island. Probably wasn't but seeing these guys wash up on the beach seemed like a yearly occurrence when I was a kid.
Catalina island is beautiful. Do you still live there?
@@Hardworkandrealestateprofits No, but still have a LOT of family there and visit often. It has changed so much, kinda sad.
Look like Portuguese man-of-war
If you listen correctly they stated their related to the Portuguese man-o -war
I knew the site but couldn't remember the actual name & was thinking Portuguese man o war. Then realized that it wasn't but I still couldn't remember the name until they said it.
Makes sense they're related the the man o war.
Yup, no touchy, touchies.
@@theoryofpersonality1420 So I can't stand there poking them?
Probably just as well. It would end up like when I poke my cat. Me getting bit.
But at least the cat is just playing & it's not hard.
His sister just ignores me & I quickly get bored & wander away.
NOT
These are the most common type in South Africa. we call them Bluewater Bottles. They do sting, but are harmless.
Got one on my back while swimming. It hurt like hell, I cried like a baby.
I was also stung by the blue bottles, and yes it hurts like hell. I was 12, no one around me got stung
We call them Blou blasies jn Afrikaans😊
people do the whole pee on it thing when they get stung.... ( I think any water will help)
My you son had the idea to stop on these creatures with his bare feet. We ended up in ER with severe stings all over his feet and legs -- he was miserable for a few days (thank you ER for treating the pain and swelling).
Teach your son not to stomp on sea creatures. Thoughtless and irresponsible.
@@sunnyscott4876 It was during a Boy Scout outing and they were dead and dried out! Children are randomizers -- teach as much as one can and repeatedly, but anything can happen. Throw in ADHD, etc., and the challenge of having good teachings stick is an even bigger issue. While these creatures were everywhere and dead, he was generally most empathetic with animals and "the littles".
That's more likely Portuguese man of war, smaller and in Australia they're deadly. Horrific pain and tentacles up to 6ft long
It’s annually occurring. Valella Valella is the scientific name.
AKA By-the-wind-sailors. They are harmless.
Just guided by the wind and floating to wherever the wind blows.
Quite fascinating seeing thousands of them all across the beaches in San Diego
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Be careful where you step on the beach - wear flip-flops.
I'm going to a Graduation and a Wedding tomorrow so of course I'll be wearing flip flops.
Peanut butter and jelly fish.
Ok hungry now 😂
🤔 ...there should BE a _"peanut butter"_ fish. 😂
These were all over the Oregon beaches when I was there on 4/10/24.
Saw the whole beach filled with them in Newport OR a week ago.
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
I live on the coast, I pick them up and put them in my hand for photos and haven’t been stung yet.
Or if I have, it wasn’t noticeable.
@@dianacryerthankfully you had no side effects...probably shouldn't touch stuff your not too sure about just in case.
@@MrWiseinheart I will learn someday. 😆
Blue bottles are what we call them in Australia. They sting (which hurts) so be mindful in the water.
No. These are related but nowhere near deadly. These are bigger and darker. In WA as a kid they used to warn us over and over about them. I was about 200kms above perth.
This AGAIN?! 🙄 It's not news, but I'll freely offer that this isn't always a good sign.
Wonderful! I’ve seen these and now know what they are. 😊
If you see a smaller version they're Portuguese man of war and seriously dangerous even when dead. Cause horrific pain. A real problem here in Australia where people drown from the shock of the pain.
No need to search the stars for alien life, all you need to do is look in the ocean. The contrast between life that evolves in the ocean and life that evolves on land is fascinating. Add on top of that amphibious life? It really is something.
🙂👍
A reporter in ripped, holey jeans, nope...... Very bad taste.
Those are all over the shore in Goa, India every year.
I seen them today.
It looks like a Portuguese man of war type of jellyfish?
Not as dangerous as the stuff that comes on motor-boats . . .
Blue bottles dnt stand on them or touch them the sting hella sore normally throw vinegar on effected area or urine
This must be what I experienced as a young child, 50+ years ago, at Dana Point. I thought they were jelly fish and I was both fascinated and freaked out... they were everywhere!!
They are blue bottle jellyfish..they sting. We have them on our NZ beaches all the time
They sting like blazes
We call them manowars on the gulf coast...
I picked up a lot of those in Carlsbad last year. They are really cool!
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Rosarito south of San Diego and all over the Beach this morning!
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
@@user-ed5zl2cw2h Not Jelly Fish or Man of Wars you can pickup.
Did we have a news?
Dam That's A Bunch of Portuguese Jelly Fish Not to friendly either 😆
How about this for manowar
Blue bottles we get them every year in Australia you have to watch there tentacles they sting but only when alive .
Interesting. Southern Thailand's beaches are covered in jellyfish this year which is unusual in the 9 years I have lived here. Something global is occurring.
Was at Cardiff State Park yesterday and they are still around. Took pictures of them.
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Interesting. They showed up on some Guernsey Uk beaches last week
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
*Touch it and find out.* 😂
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
All the chemicals, ucular wast and trash humans dump in the ocean. You have to wonder if everything odd in the ocean is a direct result from it
You can scoop these things up by the bucket load right now just north of Santa Cruz, CA.
Right. Years ago, when my husband and I lived in Capitola, we'd seen them on the beach. I did get a few photos of them back then. Interesting little floaties.
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Called blue bottles in South Africe and leave awful sting and can cause a bad reaction
Man of war. Don’t touch.
all i see is trash
Portuguese man of war hurts real bad
Hawaii has a lot of them….. especially at Waimanalo Beach Park
Yup. I’ve seen tons of them washed up on the northern part of the big island.
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
*But why are they dying in droves?* I understand how the nutrient cycle works. That’s not what’s important here.
Yeah there were a ton of them in Newport Oregon...
@@MrWiseinheart DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
@@user-ed5zl2cw2h 👍
Oh man, if I lived there I would be trying to sneak it all back to my compost for my food forest!
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Don’t eat them
Had one wash onto my inner thighs trying to Protect my brother who was a baby from getting hurt!
Bay Area beaches are full of these
Our ecosystem working perfectly! 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣
O goodness. Run people. RUN. ITS ALIENS...😅😅😅
I wonder how actually healthy this is, or some sort of imbalance...?
This is God's nature at work. Why is everyone so scared of these types of events! They are special and should be relished. They just said it puts nutrients back into the sand. That's a good thing!
It's related to jellyfish that means it's edible. Or at least it could be used as fish bait.
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
Portuguese man of war, everybody knows that….
The video literally stated that that this was not a Portuguese man of war, but a less dangerous cousin.
The Blob ! ! !
Can you eat them?
I'm looking for ways to cut down on my seafood bill 😮
🤣🤣🤣
Try them on toast.
@@lancelink29 thank you
I'm sure they would taste great with the seaweed, like a sea salad!
@@LaineyBug2020 hey that's a great idea...... I think 🤔😫
They're called Villela, the PNW gets a ton of them every late winter/early Spring. Not many this year. Probably El Nino shifted their pattern south towards SoCal this year.
This is news?
Yeah, why? Something could be killing something in the sea and we need to know.
we call them blou blasies... (blue blisters)
Oregon got them first, old news, california
~ Condoms... don’t pick them up ~
LaJolla chores?
Blue sails
Traces of the civilization😆.
Thanks so much for this info... my brother thought they were North Korean condoms.
😂😂😂
😂😂
Is that because of the head they used in imaging?
Mostly plastic bottles.
Seen them before but they are weird and they stink
I’ve seen this before in Santa Barbara. We were picking them up and throwing them at each other 😂
😳 they sting
@@ReginaRedding yea. They do. But it’s so tiny you don’t even feel it. And like they said the clear ones are already dead. So you can see which ones are dying
DO NOT TOUCH THEM. They sting, it hurts badly, there were fatal cases due to these stings.
@@user-ed5zl2cw2h I think you missed the part where I clearly typed ‘we were picking them up and throwing them at each other’. No one died. No one got stung. It even says it in the video.
@@weskelly4538 better be safe than sorry. I am glad no one got hurt, but your case might become a misinformation for others. Also much more poisonous Portuguese man-o-war looks the same, people may assume it's harmless blue bottle and end up with severe stings.
Excited to see dead creatures … hmmmm … 😵💫
That's not good
More junk washed up on the beach.
Oh dear, sea creatures who float on the surface of the water and are blown around by the wind ended up on the beach. Whatever shall we do? Oh yeah, blame climate change.
I really thought it was going to be the video of the central and/or south American's leaping out of the boat and jumping in to a waiting car after an illegal crossing. Residents of beach communities in that area rarely pay attention to Hispanic/Latin Americans unless they are cleaning their homes or doing the landscaping. Seeing multiple men now actually working would be cause for worry
Did she invite everyone to come on down to enjoy the mass deaths?
😆 🤦
Trumpies diapers ?
it's very sad. makes me wonder if toxins in the water are to blame?
Gross...
Plastic
She’s a reporter??!!??? Maybe dress like your not going out for drinks with your friends
She's at a beach.
They wash up when the water is poison.
Amazing how this story dropped the ball when the forgot to blame global warming 🤣🤣🤣
What a shame there remains only 7 years before this earth is deleted by natural disaster and by the war.
These are normal, they come in when it storms. AKA men of war.
