As the tide recedes along the shores, it uncovers a truly alien world of rock pools. At first look, the landscape presents little more than a barren, lifeless stretch of thick mud and rotting seaweed, strewn with boulders. But these features come together to create a unique habitat. Twice a day, miles of sand, gullies, reefs and rock pools are exposed, bringing into view a wealth of rarely seen marine life. Here, the sparse isolated pools open a window on the many conflicts that these creatures must content with in order to survive. Each rock pool is a tiny but complex ecosystem, home to crabs, shrimps, and all manner of incredible creatures.
All the footage in this video is completely original and was filmed by the NWF team - aka Leo and his girlfriend Ella :D
Filmed on location at La Rocque, Jersey, Channel Islands.

This video is a little different to normal - I mainly use public domain deep sea footage from other major organisations for my deep sea series, but in this video all the footage is my own! Rock pools are incredibly beautiful and are so easily accessible, yet they're still really overlooked. I decided to head out and film this on-location to highlight just how close you can come to the marine world by visiting rock pools and coming face to face with this staggering ecosystem yourself. So, I apologise if the change in style or cinematography is a little jarring - this is not a 'new normal' for the deep sea series, and the usual videos with ROV footage and alien-like creatures will return, but nonetheless this is a project I'm very excited to share with you all :)

As a child I loved rockpools you could find so many interesting things in there! It’s a shame things just aren’t as bustling as they used to be! We used to have a pond at our old primary school and go fishing and learn about all the species there but even that’s closed now, this is the sort of stuff I want to teach my kids

I’ve seen your videos from the beginning and watching your channel grow is exciting! You always had great content using the sources you had, but now you’ve added a much more personal touch. I love seeing your passion for nature, the family member a lot of use tend to neglect. I don’t want to say you would be great to fill Sir David Attenborough’s shoes (there isn’t a way to really haha) because I feel on a human level you are both on par with each other. Rather he has much more experience and wisdom that comes with time. So I can’t wait for you to experience more and more of this world and gain more wisdom. Thank you for doing this for us and for the earth!! It’s a lot of hard work and it shows!! Also spectacular writing!! Thanks again for doing this and you are doing an amazing job.

It really is worth it - the oceans are such a breathtaking other world, and in the end the hard work will all pay off. Wishing you all the best!!!!
I too have just started my marine bio studies, so I think we’re in very similar situations. The best way to keep focused is to just try to remind yourself of why you’re doing this, of what made you fall in love with marine life in the first place. As a kid, my parents would take me on holidays all along the Mediterranean coast and I would together, with my brother, always scoure the tide pools, collecting all lifeforms we could find. They always struck us as mysterious microcosms, much more interesting than our own, barren sandy north-sea beaches in Holland.
We used scoop-nets, our bare hands or a clothespin attached to a rope and outfitted with bait to lure the crabs. We would keep all organisms in a bucket the whole day and would always draw a crowd of kids to see what we had found. We once had a baby octopus who released ink into the bucket, rendering the entire scene pitch black. Then after, he clambered out and vanished... Ahh the memories, such good times exploring!

@@NaturalWorldFacts It's been a long time (I'm 34) but I'd say: sea urchins. If you reach below their spikes and apply gentle but firm pressure, they come off the rock giving you a look at their bellies lined with manifold suckers on spaghetti-ish arms. Put them on the shore and see their spikes glisten and dance in the sunlight as they slowly make their way back to the nearest body of water. Also, hermit crabs are fun too. They'll come popping out to have a look at their surroundings if you leave the shell alone, face-up for a bit. Surely worth a visit sometime. Keep it up with the great content!✌

I grew up on the Pacific coast, and my parents would drive down to the beaches all the time to let 5-year-old me freely explore the tide pools. I took for granted those little beaches for the longest time but now I'm so glad I could experience them as a child. There's something so wonderful about finding little crabs, limpets, hearing the calls of seagulls, wading in the frigid cold water (with rainboots of course, or your feet get cut up) and just seeing a part of nature different than your standard park or backyard. I think spending time on those beaches is what gave me the fascination I have with the ocean now.

Wow! This took me back forty years to summer holidays in Anstruther, Fife.
Every summer holiday for eight years was spent in this beautiful town, and many hours were spent climbing around the rock pools between Anstruther and Cellardyke, bucket and net in hand, a crab line and bait for the deeper pools.
It was a sensory overload - waves crashing in the distance, the pungent smell of the seaweed, the taste of salt hanging in the air, jagged rocks underfoot, slipping and sliding, looking for any purchase, as my younger brother and I clambered down to where we were told not to go.
Rain was no deterrent - you were getting wet anyway, so the weather wasn't an issue.
    Wonderful video.

i live on the coast, but not spent much time by the ocean. little sand fleas and bugs are a bit intimidating, but it's calming to see the way you react to them, and to hear about the roles they serve in their ecosystem. i appreciate the neutral and appreciative tone you take throughout your videos -- it makes it easy to fall in love with these creatures.

What a wonderful comment, thank you for taking the time to write this. I’ve always felt a deep appreciation for wildlife, so it’s really lovely to hear you say that it shows in my films and helps you fall in love with these creatures too. You should absolutely take a little trek to the sea and see if you can bring yourself to interact with it a little more. I understand how these creatures can seem intimidating, but developing a ‘connection’ that allows you to see it all from the perspective of the role and beauty of these creatures can feel really special and alter your entire outlook on things.
