    Falcon (Sam Wilson) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan, and introduced in Captain America #117 (Sept. 1969), the character is mainstream comics' first African-American superhero. Falcon uses mechanical wings to fly and has limited telepathic and empathic control over birds. Following Steve Rogers' retirement, Sam Wilson becomes the newest Captain America and leader of the Avengers.

      Its called drawing parallels between comics and real life you know like how comics have always done. You got to be blind if you can't see that. I mean hell the man had a meeting with all the promonet black hero if that doesn't harken back to the Civil Rights movement then nothing fucking does.

      bro i think it's pretty obvious that the civil rights movement started with black people wanting equal rights, i mean MLK was the one who started it, he's black, and went through struggles that every black person went through at the time. people aren't blind I'm pretty sure they can tell that, can't people just be happy that it encourage other minorities to join the movement, and fight for their equal rights. everything doesn't have to be a competition.

      It wasnt only about AA, thats true. But due to the history of this country. We we're the driving force. It was a black man that meet with LBJ in order for the civil rights act to be passed. AA's was on the front lines getting the crap beat out of us, yes other ethnic groups co opted the movement, but it was AA who was driving the car..

    Sir, you're completely wrong about the 1950s-60s civil rights movement (CRM) completely. It was about racism against African-Americans, specifically racial segregation. MLK jr talked about other issues (poverty, imperialism, etc.), BUT the primary focus was on anti-black racism. For a more precise understanding of MLK jr read *Where do we go from here?*. Spencer is absolutely correct in showing the CRM as black/white issue (but it's an obvious point).
    You can simply google Black Panther Party 10 point program -- that can tell you what they're all about. Rage definitely represents Spencer's (mis)interpretation of the BPP - you're correct there.
    Now in general --- the whole conversation of violence, in the context of African-American history, centers on *self-defense* against brutality -- be it from KKK, police, etc. While I give Spencer credit for taking on a controversial issue (I love it actually), but he is unable to capture the complexity of this issue *properly* because he has a white liberal perspective on it.

    8:43 Dude there were VARY few black cops in the 1960s and they did not keep there jobs vary long. please do not equate peoples suffering. just as a rule. You cant say that having to have to leave your country to migrate to a new one is the same as not being able to marry your love interest. you also can't say that not being able to vote in the early 1900s is the same as a demographic being enslaved for more then 150years. i will agree that it is all suffering but you can't compare a stubbed toe to an amputation. HEY! Seen you on Nerdarchy! Question - Have you ever tried to make a Fighter class hero with just a shield like Cap in D&D ? The reason being is that I've had small Cap figures that would fit perfectly on a D&D map, as a halfling and a human, maybe even a gnome, it was from an old game where you put heroes in hollow dice, but that's not important right now. The feat Shield Master looks good, but is there a better source to look at ? I kind of remember 2nd edition having something, but it's fuzzy.

      paul coy Other editions have different Feats, but Shield Master, Tavern Brawler (to give you proficiency in Improvised Weapons that would arguably allow to throw the shield), and either Protective Fighting Style (for defense) or Dueling Fighting Style (to gain +2 on damage). You might even want to go with the Paladin class so you can Divine Smite when you do a melee strike with your Shield. Try that. :)

    Nick Spencer draws several parallels between the public's response to Sam Wilson and the US' response to Obama as a president "Sam Wilson represents change" after all. Its very evident throughout this comic that Nick is commenting on current events, so I don't think Rage is a commentary on the black panthers, but more a commentary on Black Lives Matter, and how they too turned against Obama for being "too soft" on race. The Americops are then an allegory for modern american police. I agree its too black and white, but I think this is more emulative of the modern conversation on police brutality, than it is the 1960's civil rights movement

    D-man was created sometime in the 1970s I believe, when the WWF was first kicking off. Marvel tried to fold the popularity of wrestling into their comics and that's when the introduced D-man. At the time D-man was supposed to be a mix between Daredevil and Wolverine but he was more like a simpleton.

I agree there were many white people who supported and helped MLK during that time, no doubt, but to say it was moreso about "human rights" seems disingenuous. its the reverse, yes it was human rights, but the focal point was the struggle of african americans against stuff like Jim Crow and the KKK

I like how Marvel has given Sam Wilson a group that reflects him, but I would hope that some way some how Marvel will add Patriot (Eli Bradley) to Sam Wilson group. I think Eli's character would blend well with group dynamic, plus he doesn't deserve to be pushed into obscurity that has been done to him. The other members of Young Avengers have been given places of activity in the Marvelverse. Patriot deserves his own that would continue to flesh him out

    The best way to include minorities is make new diverse characters and keep the old ones. The best way to gain customers is to keep the old customers and gain new ones. These two ideas can work in tangent with one another. Marvel makes money, old customers get their heroes, and new customers get their heroes if they want them. How do you get new characters in there some might ask? Do what they did in the old days. include some new character in the old comic, whether its a villian or ally for the old character, so people will still buy it and if they like the new character they will eventually get their own title.

    • @pyromansir6983
      @pyromansir6983 7 років тому +6

      Well the problem with that is characters of colors often get assigned bad writers or artist whether there new or old and since its a who you know business most writers who want to create a character that is white because they are white since most artist and writers hired are white.
      So they would have to hire a non-white creator and even if its good people may not by it or compare it to some already big superhero and ignore it like how people compared Static to Spider-man.
      Heck they have a lot of old non-white superheroes that get forced to the back that aren't even bad characters but weren't used as much as they could like DC does.
      Plus would you rather read some well known character that's popular that you or your friends like or some random comic that you never read before. So you have to slowly push away the old in hopes for the new. Creating new characters or stories is easy; selling them is a bitch.

    • @baruk9706
      @baruk9706 7 років тому +1

      Pyroman Sir I don't really see what a creators race has to do with anything as almost all the successful minority characters have been created by a white writer aka storm, Luke cage, Black panther, so a white guy definitely can create good minority characters and they really don't have to hire a non white writer, plus that seems kindove insulting just to hire someone and assume they can make a good character because of their race. And that's why I said you have to include new characters in old characters comics at first so you don't have to push away anything. So you and your friends will still pick up that familiar old character and be introduced to a new and hopefully orginial character. How they did with the fantastic four back in the day.

    • @pyromansir6983
      @pyromansir6983 7 років тому +5

      It has to do more with how characters will be created or written about that are minorities added with the rest of what i said added on. I never said anything about race equaling good characters i said who is given the character to write matters and there have been have been characters that have been around and were around for along time with said characters that haven't been fully replaced that people complain about (X-23 Wolverine(OLD MAN LOGAN),Sam Wilson(Steve Rogers is still seen as Captain America and is still active),Female Thor(Odinson comic is amazing and i don't care for Jane Foster Op B.S.).The only characters gone are Tony Stark and Banner really.
      In the old days an every man superhero like spider-man is new so it's even harder today and it has to do with who wants to write and publish said characters and how much are people are willing to buy. Kinda like will you buy those issues of comics that you know are good and will buy that comic that may be good and will they cancel it because not enough people got those issues in its run.
      I mean Sam Wilson been a character for years in Captain America same for Cho in the Hulk beside the chick who replaced Iron-man Marvel is still doing the same stuff your preaching.

    • @baruk9706
      @baruk9706 7 років тому

      Pyroman Sir Then perhaps those characters just aren't good enough/original enough. Including them in old comics might help them get over that initial sales barrier but if people don't ask for them they aren't going to go any farther than that. Now if they were some sort of side piece then went off to develop themselves into their own character like night wing or red hood then people would probably be more interested in that. In fact I really liked the brain hulked cho where everyone turns into a hulk because its not just hulk its this new strange type of hulk with a new character. People aren't going to ask for this new character if it means replacing the old ones. And they haven't been FULLY replaced but they are getting most of the attention as the others just dwindle to the side as old hat.

    On diversity....I mean I feel you. I agree for the most part. Forced diversity is the main reason fans are rebelling. Im guilty of it too. I mean, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury is ok and all but I was really pulling for Chuck Norris. Thats the Nick Fury I wanted to see. A Nick Fury who would have gotten to kick a lot of ass. I think the nerfed Sam Jackson Nick Fury. But lets keep it real, and be honest. Some...Not most...Not all. Of the hatred is coming from racist and misogynist. And many of them dont just come out and say it, they pretend its something else. Bigotry exist in the world, in the country and in geek culture. Dosnt help to ignore that they are there fanning the anti diversity flames.They might be the minority but they are there making it worst.

    This is really good. Granted the info may not be as spot on as the writer wanted ... it still brings up the apparent topics that are plaguing our country today. The more I listen to these I can see and hear what u are saying in terms of "preachiness" but it is still a topic that should be discussed. Using the comic platform is a great way to share the message of unity and working together as a people rather than trying to ignore the issues we face on a daily basis to then just accept the status quo. @mreed7 on twitter. Been a fan friend of urs for yrs now bruh! Keep up the amazing work!

    I love how this episode laid some bread crumbs for people to think a little, and improve their knowledge if they actually desire it. I hope that makes sense. I don't want to get crazy here, but I like how this comic material works in a way to get people to open up their minds a little, but then again, that's just ONE OF the things Captain America comics have done before. Good job, Rob. Just curious, what is your ethnic background? Sorry if you've already answered this before.

    off base on a few points. you were thinking to historical when this is mainly about current issues. the americops represent the cops today in black neighborhoods. they are depicted as treating the citizens as hostile combatants and not people first and they have a habit of leaning towards violence first. rage is supposed to represent blm, heart is in the right place but sometimes their actions hurt their cause. it's especially evident in the most recent issues where (spoiler alert). rage is shot while unarmed trying to break up a robbery where the cops shot first without provocation. it being filmed to add icing on the cake and show that often times even when caught on camera, evidence is often covered up or nobody is held accountable even after its released creating the current environment we have in the world today. this has very little to do with the old civil rights movement and more of today's events
