The full list of free hats are: Ghastly Gibus, Pyrovision Googles, Full Head of Steam, Gentlemunitionne of Leisure, Civilian Grade Jack, Military Grade Jack, Skull Island Topper, Bombinomicon and the Director's Vision taunt, which of course isn't a hat but is still a free TF2 cosmetic.
As well as two hats unlocked in TF2 by playing different free-to-play games on Steam: Spiral Sallet (Spiral Knights achievement "Mission Accomplished") and the Alien Swarm Parasite (from Alien Swarm Achievement "Hat Trick".

The Gibus is one of the few achievement hats who h is tradable so you should be able to trade one for pretty cheap

*Update 2020* - Although this video was uploaded in 2018, *there has been no TF2 update which affects this guide* and therefore everything in this video is still 100% accurate for 2020, so I updated the title to "2020" to reflect this.
The alternative would be for me to either reupload *exactly the same video*, or remake *exactly the same video* for the sole purpose of a number underneath changing from 2018 to 2020 which seems kind of pointless to me. I've had a think about it, and I am happy to just update the title of the video rather than remake it! I hope that explains in to anyone who wasn't sure what's going on here

I suggest a Steam Treasure Hunt so that you don't only get a chance to get the three hats (Bounty Hat,[Insert the name of the other one,citation],and the HOUWAR [Hat Of Undeniable Wealth And Respect]) but you can earn every promotional item in quests.

Who owns the very first gibus? And who did they dominate? How did this all come to?
Originally you had to get some Halloween achievements to get it. After that Halloween updated ended they then changed it so you dominate someone wearing it. So all Gibuses today are are a result of those first few people who got the original Halloween achievements
Casperr Wrong: There was a secret link you could find on the TF2 page when the update released. Anybody who found the link got the hat. When that ended, then there was the dominations.

The Fancy Fedora they add secret link to every single update on teamfortress.com page - not all "days" but every update have at least one secret link

It's against Steam TOS and you CAN get a VAC ban for it however it is unlikely so do it at your own risk
Hobblewiggins same. I did it years ago and while it only gave certain TF2 achievements that give Items if you hadn't got them already, I still feel fucking stupid for it. Mind I no longer have most of those hats as I did something just as stupid but I guess redeeming by shipping them with the whole merasmus ghoul statue at halloween at some point trying to get a couple halloween items.
ProtoRBLX well there's very little incentive to do all that again seeing as they don't reset the item drops or anything.

I got the front-line field recorder randomly from a “you have new items” notification one day. I’ve never tried to upload anything to UA-cam, yet I still have this hat and I never see anyone else wearing it.

*I DO NOT recommend the use of achievement management website/software or community idle server commands that award you achievements.* Just because these tools are quick and easy to use that *does not* mean they are legitimate in any way. They are quite literally hacks. Just because you didn't program it, by using these tools you are literally cheating. Will using an achievement manager or "give hats" command in a community server result in a ban? Probably not, but it is 100% against Valve's terms of service and they have every right to ban your account by using these cheats. I would never suggest using these tools and I try and ignore their existence, but the amount of comments I get from people saying they got hats this way I thought I should say something just to warn those who may be unfamiliar. Whilst these tools may appear safe, it is literally using hacks and has all the potential punishment that using any other kind of hack.

WIll using an achievement manager result in a ban? Certainly not.
besides, these are not cheats anyway. And there's absolutely no risk of getting banned in any way if you're not connected to vac-secured server.
It's really up to you if you want to get achievements not doing anything or not

Fun fact:you can still get the Black rose and frontline field recorder. You can get the frontline field recorder in the achievement servers. By getting the Black rose you need to craft it to get it right now or buy it on the steam market.
You can't craft the black rose, and it's super fucking expensive so you most likely won't be buying it (it's really expensive because the only ones that can be sold are glitched ones)
It's a shame Super Monday Night Combat ended. It was actually a really fun game
I didn't even know it shut down, i had a blast playing it and while i have both the cosmetics i considered coming back to it someday

It still works tho. Just play the bot mode for about 20 hrs straight and you can get the achievement. The game itself is so shit that it’s not worth trying to play it for any reason other than to get the items

tf2 fan boy what, what is the problem using achievement servers, if you don't use them you are playing with weapons like a decade old and limit you a lot, takes lot of the fun from the game, also, your 2 next phrases have 0 meaning, explain yourself

It's not because of Europe lol the game has had under 1K players since late april 2018, don't blame a law to increase your privacy to a game's inevitable demise.
I actually got the better jack hat without even trying. I stepped into the special TV room, and eventually left, but some other people did the achievement, and because I (assumed) was on the same server, I got the achievement. Sooooooo..... nice. Also I got the 2nd Jack Hat first. I got the civilian one later on.

So, for anyone wondering about the group of Halloween hats, basically: one of the Halloween achievements grants the player a cauldron, which when opened, gives 3 of the cosmetics from the halloween 2014? Crate, one of them will be haunted as well

I've been playing Spiral knights for about 1 hour and a half or something, and i already got the hat.
funny thing is, when i reached the checkpoint, i actually went for a 4th floor. The game is actually pretty entertaining and Fun, it reminds me of maplestory 2, and since that little fiasco is closing servers, it's a nice place to settle in for a while (until Riot games finally releases Project L, and i can get out of LoL for good this time)

I like it but its a bit boring to me. I dont know if im playing it right, but the levels i get in are very very long and i got tired of it.

To honor some of the retired hats/weapons....
They could release special variants as a reward during a special annual event. *where you can only get ONE of them at random after completing all of the not too hard event contracts, but no duplicates.*

You should make a video on the other halloween hats. Not all of them are halloween restricted, and there's a lot of good ones that aren't (exorcist, bonedolier, witch hat etc)

I deleted plenty of my achievment hats, or used them to make other hats. I do have normal hats now, but man, I gotta be honest, I do having halloween hats like Monoculus.

I got the bombicon, pyrovision g., skeleton hat and that hood from pyro you can use outside Halloween.
I really wish there was a way to get the Bolt action blizter and the triclops they look really cool.
Good thing i snatched the knife before the game went down, though i really wanted that Triclops, oh well.

The frontline field recorder is still possible to get. There is this video from WaylonPK titled "How to Get TF2 Replay Achievements in 2022", he tells you how to get the frontline field recorder, i got it from that video.

You can still get the black rose if your friend game shares the game with you and you use a gibbed achievement editor to unlock the achievement

For the director emote I think you actually have to play the re0lay every time you make an edit because when I had trouble getting it that worked
If you go on a "Free Acheivements" game you can actually get the Frontline Feild Recorder

What about the Tf2 items from the games Poker Night at the inventory and Poker Night at the inventory 2 ?
You get then by buying the games and playing them, that's why they aren't included here because they aren't technically free hats

i have one issue and the replay saves way too long, already more than 10 minutes, how long do i have to wait?
Not that much, just make shure you are using EVERY tool that the replay system has to offer
you can also get the achievement hats by going into a community server with a command to give you all the achievements including their hats

The replay one doesn't work anymore? Even on "replay servers", it still says "replay is not available"
The code in TF2 which talks to UA-cam is out of date. So even if you did record a replay and even if you did edit it and even if you uploaded it and get the requires views, TF2's code wouldn't know to trigger the achievement :/

From night in the inventory 1 and 2 you get lots of items for both TF2 and borderlands.
I have the Alliance of Valiant arms one. That game wasnt too bad actually. Didnt even know that I got the knife from it XD
You know what they should do they should do contracts for 3 months that allow you to get those retired items like the black rose
or we could fuck off with grade item and contract bullshit because this is TF2 and no CS:GO fuck yourself for existing you piece of shit game cause you ruined one of the best game out here with your shitty mechanic that removed all the charm and unique feeling that TF2 had.
most of the new player ignore the tutorial of the game, so they are most likely to just completly ignore the contract bullshit.
this idea will just be another reason for valve to add in contract bullshit and make the game an even bigger CS:GO clone cashgrab, and I don't want that.
anyway, even if this where a good idea, valve, or at least the TF2 team, are way to much about earing cash with CS:GO like mechanic and seems to not care about F2P anymore, so if they ever do that, they will put it behide a paywall or some shit.

yeah, but you see, that would make TF2 look like other game like overwatch and CS:GO even more, and the point you seem to not get is that I don't want this game to become a clone of other game, cause what made the succes of TF2 was the fact that it was not like any other FPS, and what you want to do is make TF2 a generic boring nowadays FPS.
So please give up on this stupid idea and let TF2 keep is originality, at least what is left of it after valve trying to make it a CS:GO clone.

I have the Flamingo Kid and the Triclops and I barely remember playing SMNC. Reaching certain levels there also granted you Engineer and Soldier skins for two of the characters (Megabeth and someone else.)
Again, I barely remember playing SMNC, but I remember the skins. They were alright. Triclops is still one of my favorite Pyro Hats.

You can get the frontline field recorder still using the dumbest way. Because the hat is unlocked via achievement, you can go to one of those free item community servers and type in the set command. When you do this it will give you the hat and you can wear it.
of the 5 obtainable hats/weapon, the only one i managed to get was the black rose. i don't remember WHEN i managed to get it, but i am certainly happy i did while it was available
i actually managed to get most of these hats
sadly like 80% of them i deleted or i used them for crafting
which i regret very much
the monday night combat hats were pretty grate i regret using them for crafting so much
same goes for the directors taunt which i had to delete because f2p back pack can only have 50 slots unless you get the smissmas gifts
