Hyrbid gar or Lepisosteus spp is the product of a longnose and alligator gar hybridizing, gar hybridization happens when gar cannot find their own species to hybridize with. Spotted gar and alligator gar can also hybridize so can Florida gar and alligator gar. Unlike most hybrids in nature gar hybrids are virile and can breed and pass on their genes, the largest hybrid gar i have ever seen was around 7 foot and 130 pounds. in almost a decade of fishing and guiding for gar i have only had 16 hybrids caught from my boat. They are an amazingly intriguing, rare and unique member of the gar family.
Not a monster. May be rare but a freak of nature. Don't know if my Dad and I ever caught that hybrid back in the fifties and sixties in Lake Corpus Christi, but the two alligator gar that have been taken from there were monsters, over 300 lbs. Actually the first one was taken by biologists in the old lake Mathis before Wesley Seale dam was built. That one had a catfish inside that weighed over 10 lbs! We caught many hundreds of gar and released zero. They are the scourge of catfish fishermen.
When I was kid, I was trying to catch this huge gar under a dock but I couldn't keep it hooked. An old guy came up to me and said, "You'll never catch him that way. You need a piece of washcloth on the hook." We were using pieces of an old towel as a hand washing rag, he pointed at it and walked away. So we cut a strip, doubled it over and put it on with our bait. When the gar took the bait the next time, when we set it, he clamped down and the rag held to his teeth. I'll never forget that fight. We had to walk him all the way down the dock to the shore cause he was about 4 times longer than the depth of our net.
@@nemocheerio reminds me of the time my pops and I snagged for paddlefish, we must have caught a hundred of those suckers and my me maw turned them into paddlecakes!

I was fly fishing for bluegill once in a Florida impoundment and hooked a longnose gar, about a 4-footer, maybe 10 pounds. Doesn't sound like much, but I had a 3-pound test tippet tied directly to my streamer (#8 muddler minnow), and had a finesse job to get that fish to boat. Had him hooked in the corner of his mouth or I'd have never landed him. Best fly-fishing battle of my life.
A great day spent wading through fish poop pudding and catching amazing fish! I honestly had no idea that gar could hybridize like that… that’s pretty cool!!
Amazing fishing!! I could probably fish for the rest of my life here in UK and never catch a wild fish as big as that gar hybrid. Fantastic that you are showing others that gator gar is a fish worth respecting and conserving.

I still remember my 54 inch gar that I cubed into peach sized breaded fried portions... My brother said it was the best tasting freshwater fish he'd had outside of rainbow trout. I don't eat them all. But I do eat a few.
I was wondering why a clean and cook wasn't done on at least one fish. I would be interested to know what they taste like. I ahve had gar but not from anything THAT BIG. Nor a hybrid. I wonder if it tastes the same? Heck of a day fishing guys.
@@lizmbrad Yes it tastes the same. I eat hybrid bass (crossbreed of striper and white bass) and they taste exactly like striper but a little juicier. Most fishing channel fishermen put their gar back in the water but every so often I eat them. I hear people say "They have too many bones." Those people have obviously never eaten gar. They have no bones at all outside of their spine, rib and fin bones.
Beautiful giants! We have a spot on the Sulphur River we are gonna hit soon and hopefully pull out some monsters. Great video and thanks for sharing that rare beast!!!
I live in Southern Illinois and I remember growing up 30yrs ago we would fish the spillway at Carlyle lake and there was always the old guys lined up all down both sides. I live in so. Illinois too. I never understood people that would kill gar and just leave them to rot. Now they are restocking alligator gar in some of our rivers.
