I'm the vegan runner you passed at 10:50! It's great to find out that you made sub-3, I was wondering how you got on. Massive congratulations! You paced it perfectly and made it look easy! It was my first marathon too, and I was also hoping to go under 3 hours, but I missed it by quite a bit in the end. I held the pace until about 21.5 miles in and then it all started to go wrong. I finished in just under 3.15, with Michael. It was a great experience though, I'll just have to try again now!
Ah that’s great - nice to ‘meet’ you again - I saw in Michael’s post that you both finished together 💚🖤 I’d heard a lot from others that you pay for going out too hard at the start so I tried to hold back a bit. It was around the 22 mile mark it got tough for me too and the last couple of miles was about holding on. Amazing experience as you say and huge respect for anyone who runs a marathon after that. Have you got anywhere in mind for the next one?
@@TheVeganRunner I'll probably do Manchester again! It's local to me and a fast course. I won't be doing the one in April though, I think I need a break from marathons for a bit longer than that 😁
Haha that’s fair! I’m looking at Brighton in April… sounds flat and fast and would like to mix it up as I have a tendency of running the same races (think it’s the park runner in me!). Any idea what you might train for in between?
@@TheVeganRunner I'd like to start doing more fell and trail running again. I got into it just before Covid, running in the peak district, but then during lockdown I wasn't able to get out there any more. I was due to do the Edale skyline before it got cancelled, so I'll see if I can enter that next March if it's back on. Good luck for Brighton! I'll look out for the next gopro video around then!
@@wowsa0 I love trail running just a smidge more than running on the flat and fast tarmac. 🤞Fingers crossed the Skyline race is on and good luck with the training 😊
Congratulations sub 3 done, and I am preparing to run the Manchester Marathon 2024. The buildings and facilities along this route are very beautiful. Thank you for your video,
I have been inspired by all of your videos in becoming not just a runner but a vegan & a vegan runner. I been looking for inspiring running videos but never have come across one that promotes veganism ever so well as yours. Thank you.
Congratulations! An amazing accomplishment! I got back into running a year and a half ago and it is my goal to run sub 3 one day. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Allen! I’m still really proud of that training block and race, everything came together pretty well on the day. Good luck with your training and stick around - I’m running Brighton in April and will be making videos based on the training block ☺️
What an unreal effort for a first marathon! 😲👏 I’m doing Manchester on Sunday after missing my 4-hour target by 90 seconds in my first one at London last year 🙏
Have a brilliant time! It seems like we’re doing it the other way round from each other, as I’m off to London, hopefully to go sub-2:50 🤞 Best of luck for Sunday, it’s a great course and we’ll supported - you’ll crush it!
Good luck to you Peter! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did - fantastic course and atmosphere. I’m off to Brighton on the 10th of April for my second 😃
Thanks Matthew and we’ll done on your 3:20 - it takes a lot of effort to train for a marathon and keep up that pace 👏👏 Hoping for a repeat performance at Brighton in April 👍
Great video bud just come across your channel. I've been vegan 8 years and love it. I also ran manchester marathon in October and April. I came in 10 mins behind you and also enjoyed the free beer Haha.
Haha! I'm not running it for the free beer, but it certainly helps! What have you got coming up? I ran Brighton last April, about to run Race to the Stones 100K and still undecided for the Autumn...
No doubts you’ll get there mate - Zone 2 running has been a god send for me, as well as eating lots of plants 🌱 Luck plays a part too, right conditions on race day, consistent block of training etc. It all has to come together for that one day!
@@TheVeganRunner zone 2 🤣🤣 I’m in zone 4 getting out of bed 😜 seriously Lee I would be walking for zone 2, I’m lucky to hit zone 4 I’m nearly always zone 5 🥵🥵
@@coops111s Have you tried a LTHR test to determine your zones? A lot of people get frustrated when they start with Z2 as they often find they need to stop and walk or go a lot slower than they’re used to which feels deflating at first. Those that have stuck with it, and walk when they need to get the HR back in the right zone, soon find the body adapts and you can run longer/faster in Z2. I had to walk a lot of hills when I first started with it, my HR would jump out of zone straight away. Now I can run a local, mile long hill into the top of the moor whilst staying in Z2 😊
I'm the orange person in the thumbnail at the finish. That was my first marathon too. Wasn't even aiming for a sub-3 but everything went right (at least for the first 30k - that last bit was horrid). Well done!
Wow! That’s brilliant considering you weren’t thinking about sub-3. Sometimes everything just clicks on race day! I’m with you on the last 10K hurting! I think whatever your pace, that’s when the going gets tough. Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you! The training kicked-in and I was able to keep my heart rate relatively low throughout most of the race 😀 Good luck in April! Where are you running?
Good luck with Manchester - it's a great course - very gently undulating with a slightly hilly section at around mile 15/16. It's nothing major, but it does catch people out!
Thanks 🙏 Good luck with your training and definitely check-out 80/20 if you don’t have a plan already 👍 Also, checkout tomorrow’s video - I’ll be recapping on the race and you might find some helpful information along the way
Thank you 🙏 I know what people mean when they say mile 20 is when the marathon starts now… it was more around mile 22 for me and then it was a case of holding on!
Great work on that PB! This was the furthest I’d ever run and needed experience of the distance before I push it any harder. Next time, maybe under 2:50 😌
Thank you and well done on your time 👍 It wasn’t too bad for those of us at the pointy end, but it had definitely warmed-up by midday. Any plans to beat your PR next year?
Nice! I’m also hoping to take on my first Ultra next year - not sure which one yet, or the distance. I’m in the ballot for London too, and booked in for Brighton - good luck to both of us! 🤞🤞
Not even looking like it was hard work - how do you manage that?! I look worse after a 10k race - and the sweaty mess I will be next week after 55km in the jungle doesn't bear thinking about! Great run, cracking video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! A lot of people say that 😅 Maybe I’m good at hiding the suffering! That sounds like an awesome adventure you’re going on 😲 Have been drip feeding the idea of a running holiday to my partner for a few years now… she’s slowly coming around to the idea 😃

I don’t know about super talented but I’ll take it! 😅 I was fortunate to have two injury-free training blocks this year, I think running using 80/20 made the difference. Thanks for watching 👍

Huge congratulations Lee!! Sub 3 for your first marathon - amazing!! It was a great day in Manchester on Sunday, I loved it. Did you carry on with the 80/20 to train for this?
Thanks you so much Julie - it was the perfect day for it! I used the 80/20 marathon level 1 plan for this training block - now that my mileage has increased a fair bit, I think I’ll go for level 2 next time 😊
Hi, I’m running the 2022 course. I wondered if you could tell me how much elevation there was on the race you did. I know it won’t be the same but it’ll be a ballpark figure. Thanks!
Hi Paul, according to my watch there was about 460ft of elevation. It gently undulates throughout, with the only slightly hilly section at around the 14-15 mile mark at Altringham. It’s a brilliant course and well supported! Hope you have a good one 👍
