Manchester Marathon 2023 /// Race Day Vlog

  • Manchester was my third Marathon, and I wanted to try and continue taking 20 minutes off my PB, as I did in in my 2nd from my first.
Trouble is the faster you get the harder it gets to improve by the same margins.
Yes I made some mistakes in this race, but it's all part of the process. I've learned a lot that I will be taking into my next one!
I have a lot of time and some really fun races between now and then, but I'll be back. Better and stronger.
Manchester is a great marathon, and I'd love to try it again one day.
It was amazing to meet so many awesome people on the day, thanks to each and everyone of you for keeping me motivated!

Massive respect Andy. Declaring your target time on a public platform is a brave thing to do when there are no guarantees of achieving it but look at all the support you have. You 've got many years running ahead of you (should you wish to do so) and I'm sure you'll only get better. Loved how, despite the pain and cramp you still finished giving off energy to the spectators and other runners. You wiped 15 minutes off your previous PB so well done fella.

Mate - your progress has been unbelievable! You should be incredibly proud of yourself. You're one of the UA-camrs that inspire me to keep running and keep pushing for better times. Unbelievable efforts! Stay positive and go again. You'll achieve that goal. I started running as part of losing weight - dropped from 23st (Oct 2020) down to 15st (current) and got a 10k PB today of 52:20, beating my previous PB by well over a minute. People like you inspire me to keep going.

Andy, i had a similar experience at Brighton, those last few km were absolute killers and seemed to last forever. You smashed it still, new PB and you never gave up - too many positives to take away to feel anything but pride, well done sir.

Andy, Andy, Andy! Chin up brother, you have nothing to be disappointed about! Sure you had a time in mind and yes you may have missed out by a matter of minutes but let’s look at the facts here, you have just ran a marathon in 3:47, that’s epic mate and something to be super proud of!
Watching this video it’s hard not to get a little emotional, having followed your training and your journey up to this point, you really do live and breathe your running, so to see you struggle and hit some hurdles along the way was hard to see but in the end you got through those barriers and crossed the finish line strong!

Good effort and respect for going for 3:42! We never know unless we try right 🙂 Regardless! Great job 👏🏽 Last year, I went for 3:45 for the Chicago marathon and I blew up at mile 21, then I walked jogged in for a 4:13 finish time. It was my first marathon. Keep your chin up and chest high! haven't commented for a while and have been slow to catch up on Project 342. have been binge watching and finally up to speed now. wanted to say - Andy you are a total legend and a true inspiration. Your openness and honesty and bravery are unique and a beautiful trait. Don't change! I hope on reflection you feel more proud of what you have achieved. Take stock and take the time to look back at your journey and you will see how far you have come in short space of time. 15 min PB is huge!!!! (and that's on top of huge PBs throughout this training block and on top of the endless stream of PBs you have kept smashing out since you starting this running vlog malarkey!!!!), its not always about the here and now. Looking back gives context and perspective as to how far you've come on your journey. You are a hero to me

Massive PB congrats mate - nothing but a positive day! I also PB'd with 3hr32. Can't agree more with what you say at the end - doesn't matter what pace you're running, the marathon will try it's very best to take your soul. It's unlike any other distance. But I loved every minute of MCR. Great route and great city. On to the next one. 3hr42 getting smashed next time, no doubt about it.

Congratulations Andy. Going sub 4 hour and knocking 15 minutes off your PB is some effort. I knocked four minutes off my 10k time and I was totally ecstatic so you should be so pleased with what you have done. You set out a really tough target and on the day, just fell a little short . . . of being totally and utterly brilliant! Cramps and the mental challenges that come near the end of the race when its not working are so hard to overcome and you did really well. Had you totally broke down and limped home you may not have even got below the magic four hour marker. Enjoy your week off to reflect and go again. Project Three Forty Two v2 is going to be epic! 💪🏻

Hi Andy, I'm a fairly new subscriber to your channel, so I haven't watched all your training videos. Wish I had, though, will definitely be giving them a watch. Just want to say how I related to this video so much.
I did Berlin in 2021, and the wheels completely came off. Finishing that day was a miracle, and I was so gutted that it didn't go my way.
2022 I returned and smashed my goal of sub 5 hours. You've got this, Andy.
The marathon is hard. It doesn't care how your training went. It takes no prisoners.
Can't wait to see you come back and get the time you want.
    Best of luck

congrats on your PB - it may not have been quite what you wanted, but at 15 minute PB is a huge achievement! Manchester was my first marathon - didn't go to plan as jarred my knee in a pot hole at about 10 miles, and had to run/walk the whole second half due to the increasing pain. I was 35 minutes over my target time. Can't be helped, and I was really disappointed at first, however, I then realised that I'd had to dig deeper than I ever had before just to finish. Hi Andy loved the vlog, even recognised some of the runners so we must have been close! Great to meet up. I went from 4.15 to 3.30 so a huge improvement. You can definitely go way beyond your time in the years ahead. Maybe your training volume was too high? I concentrated on kids of intervals and threshold speed in my training. That really paid off. Anyway remember something I saw yesterday on a Patagonia and stuck with me ."if you wanna go faster, you go alone; if you wanna go longer, you go together"... We're all in in together dude💪🏾✊🏾

Incredible running and perseverance Andy. A pleasure watching you train and complete the marathon in a PB. I reckon you’ll smash that target very soon. You’re at the tipping point- a very tough place to be- but when you do tip over that time will be a long way back.

Well done Andy, a 15 minute PB is a great achievement. When I did Manchester 18 months ago my race fell apart and I had to run walk it in earlier than you did and I had a time of 4:06. I have just completed a marathon in 3:27. Each time your do a marathon you will have another block of aerobic base building which will make you stronger. Also really try if possible to go a little bit slower at the start and build into it. It really helps any time but especially in the marathon. 10 seconds slower per K could make quite a bit of difference for the first few K. One of my targets for the marathon I just did was to make the first K the slowest K of the marathon. My first 5k was 5:01 with an average pace across the marathon of 4:53.

Been following your journey and can relate to how you feel in setting a time and not quite achieving it, even though you got a PB. I was aiming for pre 4 for my 1st marathon (@ Manchester) and couldnt quite pull it off on the day (4.08). Andy great run there. It was my second marathon and my 1st got calf problem half was. Manchester was looking for a sub 4 so that would be a 1hr 23min pb. Went off in wave yellow a 10.30am went very well got to were i was five minutes up at half way and held it till about mile 21 and looked at my time sheet still 5 mins up so took it easy for the next 5 miles was running 9 min miles up to mile 21 then easyed up to 9.45 min miles knowing i had 5 mins in the bag. So was on target round the last corner thinking line must be there as i had all ready run marathon distance 26.2 only to see the finish line way in the distance i new it was going to be tight at this point. Put my foot down as much as i could down home straight cossed the line garmin was saying 26.65 miles and time was dead 4hrs 0mins 0 sec clocknon finsh line was saying 5hrs 23mins. Sat down near medical tent and new text had come though did not want to open it but got phone out and looked at text let out the biggest COME ON 3hrs 59min 56sec get in the best feeling ever. What a day brilliant marathon till my next on in new forset on September 10th the one i did last year and hoping to smash it no pb as its very hilly but to beat my time from last year thanks for video bud loved it Andy valente

I managed to pace mine to near perfection only because I went out 100% determined to still feel "ok" at the halfway point.
