Original Alterac Valley - Time Warp Episode 4
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 січ 2025
- In this video I go over the Alterac Valley battleground in its original state. Over the years the npcs have been either nerfed and reduced, to where you can simply run past everything. As a result of this, all of the side objectives are simply skipped, and it's a rush to the enemy's faction leader.
I give a brief overview of all of these side objectives to give you an idea of what the battleground was like during its release back in 2005.

old Alterac valley could probably be made into a game itself.
Id buy it.
It's basically a 80-Man MOBA before there were MOBAs.
@@Donnerbalken28 before there were mobas??? what are u talking about first moba was a starcraft 1 mod from fans dont know the name anymore but that was before wow was on someones mind :)
@@raphaelc9492 Let me be more specific then: Before MOBAs became as big as they are now.
wesley ross. I’d buy it too.
Wesley my dude! Id buy it tooo.
please keep this series going im drowning in nostalgia
join us on elisyum AV patch is about to be out thousands of active players and a great community
Hopefully the AV launch on Elysium wont be like the launch on Nost where the battles were like 5 minutes and everyone was exalted in a couple hours.
anonymous kitty .... When they contineud Elisyum from nostalrius they did good and now they fucked up with everything they do ... i played nost from the start until the end ... i quited Elisyum when they started with random shit to get money from it behind the scene's ... they made a bad nost copy were they PROMISED to transfer characters and account ... and me and my guild about 50 people tried and couldnt do it... only 5 of us managed to get the account they had ... they failed and only got around 10% of the nost Fans ...and instead of calling it a fan server its a piracy server now ... they screwed up... simple..
if you didnt manage the simple task to copy your charakter over to Elysium then you did it wrong, had 2 accounts and both accounts were transfered. why do you even care if they had someone who gave chinese some gold? if you are a veteran player and loved vanilla then you would play it anyways. elysium pvp is better than old nost have ever been. great staff! true vanilla experience
6000+ players on always, perfect amount.
Alterac valley was the highlight of my WOW experience back in 2005/2006. I so loved the craziness of all the things you could do in this battle :D
Been trying different sound setups so the audio may sound weird in some parts. Should be back to normal in the next video though. Hope you enjoy the video!
MadSeasonShow maybe for your next video you can talk about old spell ranking and weapon skills!
I actually have this lined up! Not sure if I can talk about them enough to warrant a video about them though - might have to include some other stuff with them. We shall see =). Thanks for the suggestion
The sound/your voice sounds a little more flat, and random at times. 3:30 etc. But else still very good...Do you maybe just use a yeti, and no filters-programs?
one you forgot but it was that you had to pull the marshals one at a time because you could erase them by taking their towers and bases but they could regenerate them by taking your tower and bases that was another way the stall worked :)
MadSeasonShow
I have to tell you how much I appreciate your video. This really hit me in the feels. I was one of those guys in college with too much free time. Instead of getting wasted on the weekends, I would hit up Pizza Hut and grab a ridiculous amount of food. Then I would que for AV and play allllll day.
It truly sucks now with the ticker and the rush AV mindset.
I miss the old days. Every NPC in the cave was elite. Even the miners were level 52/53. It was a big deal to cap the mines. We would always kite the horse wolf riders to the cave for backup. The towers and graveyards had elite npcs, and it was sooo fun to get people together and truly battle it.
Awesome awesome memories. Without question my favorite pvp mode to this day. Original AV was the best.
Still have a couple of night-elf heads stashed in the bank. Must be pretty ripe by now >_
Most likely night elf skulls by now haha

wow chill, Dahmer.
Are they soulbound? If not, try and sell them for a mad price. Always keep classic stuff thats not in the game anymore (Yes, even Hunter Ammo)
@@wtfthisisntminecraft3501 they de spawned when leaving the bg only thing to stay are the greys from looting corpses
Thank you for trying to fill up the gap Hayven left in my heart.

almost brings a tear to my eye. i used to enjoy this version of AV so much...
Alterac Valley was and still is one of my favorite things about WoW, have so many nice memories with friends there.
I miss old times :)
I remeber my first AV in vanila.
i remember that aswell, I didnt sleep for 30 hours, the addiction was real
Danio3PP I remember doing it on my brothers 60 mage for the first time. God it was magical. Then I did it on my warrior. Not quite the same result being a melee lol
i play on elysium right now and addiction is back :),
The devs destroyed AV and for what reason. What they should have done was take it out of the random selection so you could only get it by selecting it.
I mean it had to be changed, because its original incarnation was just a really bad idea as it took way too long, it was just unreasonable.
@@Arian545 you ever play Dota? A lot of people love having their time wasted for little gain.
@@obviouslykaleb7998 All those kinda games look boring af, but you do make a fair point lol
I know this video is two years old but Thank you for this video. With classic coming closer I was explaining AV to a friend who is going to start playing WOW/classic and tried to explain the battleground with all the different stuff you could summon besides actual PVP. So this stuff was perfect! Love your videos! Keep up the good work
omg in the past i judged u too fast and avoided ur content but in a few days of watching ur my fav youtuber now thank u so much ive been looking for these nostalgic stuff and details i forgot
"You could go to sleep and the next day the same battle would rage on"... LOL so true...
but that's why I loved the original AV
How is it "unconventional" if a battle last longer than just a few minutes? This is pretty much why I dropped out of wow.
It became such a "I want it, now" kinda thing with most players.
There is no working anymore, no fighting to get to the top. Its just efficiency grinding as fast as possible. With EVERYTHING.
Nothing can take time, nothing can have a longer meaning. It just has to be over fast and give them a huge reward..
Marc Jansson true. And ffs i am frigthen that i have become one of them quite too. :/ awww
I dont blame you, its addicting as hell to have it that way, its not a dumb move by blizzard. It plays on basic human mentality. We want to be rewarded and we like getting huge rewards for doing things.
But I liked it more when it took time to get great gear. When a battle could take a long while but be and real battle. When getting to the highest rank took a long while and you had to prove that you should stay on the top.
When top stuff really was just a few who had, not that was given around to everyone.
1-2 hour battleground would be fine, but spending more than a day in single bg? It's not good idea :v
But you could get in and out of it?
yeah 1-2 hrs find if you HAVE to stay to gain reward.... AV worked that you could jump in and out and still gain from it. but battles raged for days 1day10hours (as in video) is nothing i remember being part of one that lasted 4-5 days and used ot hear people mentioned many that lasted longer. they were awesome and i would love or BGs to return to those days....
I hope blizz makes this into a brawl
I think it would be a perfect fit. Brawl's whole gimmick is unbalanced whackiness anyways - would be cool to see the day long battles come back. Could make for a good honor farm!
beat me to it
Scipio11 if they did it would definitely suck anyway. They have done such a great job with plethora of recycled content we have now
that is funny, because as also stated in video, ashran is replicated oldschool av. Also its how i remember old av ... and you know how everyone hate it.
beastlysun Ashran is/was NOTHING like Vanilla AV. If you think that, that's proof you never played AV during Vanilla, or even Vanilla in general.
I came across your channel today and already im hooked. Been watching your videos for the past 4 hours. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for this video! This brought back so many memories...I literally had to hold back the tears. I don't think that I would be capable of playing vanilla now since I'm in my 30's and have a ton of responsibilities compared to in my teens and early 20's. However, World of Warcraft that we know today is utter garbage. Instant gratification for the newer generations and the old timers that were just bad at the game to begin with. I've played every new xpac, and sadly completed everything in under 2 months except mythic raids....but why would I waste my time repeating the same dungeon on a 4th difficulty? Oh well, all we can do is reminisce the good ol' days. Cheers friend!
I'm glad you made this vid. People don't know what they're missing. AV was a huge deal. Those AV turtles were no joke.
You forgot the goblin and his shredder which is you completed the quest he would let you drive it and kill players.
Also the parts of the map that got removed, in the center of the map by the snowfall graveyard there was a cave that let to the snowfall trolls village, they were elite and there were quests to go and kill them which would reward weapons. The cave that led to the village got removed before TBC I believe.
Opposite to the snowfall graveyard there was another section of the map, 2 caves one on each side of the map led to a little ravine with gnolls and syndicate mobs to fight for quests. If you remember in Alterac Mountains the syndicate were a big part in the quests so it made sense they would be in Alterac Valley. One of the quests as to go into their base and kill their leader which rewards your factions teams a raid buff that let you see the enemy players on your minimap. Sort of like how when there's a person marked with hunters mark you can see them on the minimap except for everybody.
The caves leading to these areas have been removed blizzard stated that an avalanche occurred so they're caved in. If you go to the snowfall graveyard in the current version you can still see the troll style bridge connecting the graveyard to the flag capture. On the full map there are some outlines of where the areas were.
You forgot to mention the NPCs that lied down bombs on the roads and would 1 or 2 hit anyone who didn't avoid them, and the best part is, they were invisible. And i think Korrak spawned after 2 hours of the AV.
Funny how people says about Vanilla PvP being unbalanced and sucking, the PvP is still unbalanced and stuck, at least back in the day ..summoned bosses was a fun aspect (at least for me) and pretty insane for the time xD
Blizzard is going so far away from the RPG aspect of what made RPG genre
i think legion was suppose to make WoD look good
Legion is A LOT better then WoD...
James Tyler you could've created a my little pony expansions and it would've looked better compared to wod
not for pvp, Wod pvp was better then legion.
It's not just WoW, literally every franchise, even Fallout, which wasn't Bethesda's to drag through the dirt in the first place, whether they own the rights or not.
Don't forget the Mine layer! mines hit for 50% of your hp and stopped you from running from one side of the map to the other
Love your content Mad Season. Your voice is soothing i look forward to every video. To be honest ive unsubbed from Legion for now and have moved over to a Vanilla server having a blast.
Remember this! It was awesome and the strategy won the game. It was also the best way to gain xp when it was so hard to get into dgs and raids then. The pvp gear took ages to get, but, you felt you really earned it.
I love this series more than life itself, keep up the great work Mad!
I really miss the old Alterac valley. I used to be alliance and a noob back in those days, but i remember the servers first rank 14 Av raids as if it happend yesterday. During the first few months alliance had an advantage due to a wall walk that was close to the horde base. Good times :) Keep the videos coming :)
Now I feel old when this is in a time warp ... the whole fighting, going to sleep and then enter the same battleground hits right home ... I miss the old days ... damn .. now I am even sounding old. Nice vid and thanks for the feels
MadSeasonShow you are the best, for me you are good Succesor to R.I.P Hayven Games :( Keep this up and we are proud of you :) Because you create a good old videos like him :) Thanks man, you are really great Succesor of him...
Classic Server!!!!!!!! It will be back and I will spend a shit load of time in this BG
The only reason i will play on the classic server :D
Control Panel same here!
They gutted AV. It’s the version without the reinforcements so, only lieutenants. A npc Zerg.
I love your videos, missed hayven games videos and yours make me feel better
Sounds like teamwork and good communication was key back in the days. I missed these days. Who ever went threw it has my respect. Btw nice idea with the brawl there. That would be awesome!
Starting to really like this channel, keep up the great work MadSeason! ❤
Honestly, this is what I'm most worried about when Classic comes out: how are battlegrounds going to be handled? Are they gonna be cross-realm? Doesn't seem like you could have vanilla characters matched against modern characters without serious issues, and even then, which version of Alterac would you get?
I started in BC, so the Alterac I knew probably wasn't as time-intensive as the vanilla days (my longest match was 3 hours I think), but it was still a great time. You're exactly right when you say it felt like an actual war. Great battles between players, but also resource gathering, base capturing, rescue ops, escort missions, boss summonings, all these things added up to an amazing experience that completely dwarfs what we have today: a 5-minute game devoid of any actual PvP since the winning strategy is ALWAYS to zerg rush the enemy base and avoid the enemy players.
I appreciate your videos, MadSeason. Your voice is hella soothing and it's great to sit here and reminisce with you.
Good video! I didn't know about a fraction of this stuff! I remember the banner quest or one I had to go in an ice cave and get something. I could never get anyone to come with me. They all wanted to run to the other side as you said.
Currently I've found random BGs a lot more fun and engaging than the competitive RBGs and Arenas in the current expansion. I've been 2k+, yet when reflecting on the old BG system a part of me wishes that content was still in the game. My hope is with a new PvP department head at Blizzard we will start to see some quality of life improvements to the current battlegrounds and hopefully new BGs. We might even see a new BG reward, or ranking system. That is my hope at least.
Thanks MadSeason for the video. Really enjoyed it.
I know it's 5 years later, but yeah, although I've only played vanilla/classic and TBC, I wasn't exactly sure how all that stuff worked because there's just so much of it. Thanks for the level of detail provided :)
Old Alterac Valley was extremly fun on weekends I would spent shit amount of time doing them
I love your time warps thanks for doing this!:)
This biggest part I think you might have missed about AV from when it was a nearly never-ending fight is that there was PVP ranks. This battleground was the biggest thing you could do to rank up from private up towards GM(Grand Master) rank which was the highest and gave the most glory from gear in pvp. I knew people whom didn't work jobs, played from the time they got up until they passed out in AV just to work on getting to that tank. Also remember, ranks did degress back in Vanilla that if you didn't go get more honor kills you would slowly start losing how far in a rank you would be, and then if you were low enough in the rank, you would drop rank to the previous one. This battleground was a glory field to those whom wanted to kill and enjoy killing all day. It was based on armor obviously, but once you got to a certain point you could hold yourself pretty well depending on what class you were. This did become tedious at times but was thrilling when you came to understand what you needed to do.
It is still possible to get the trinket that teleports you back to your base, in case anyone's wondering.
Horváth Benedek i think so... on a wotlk private server i got it
Loved AV, real sense of epicness back in the day
Thanks for the video. I was always turned off of av in retail because it seemed there was only one tactic I ever saw players employing (Zerg).
I found this pretty upsetting because it was clear that blizz has putting tons of work into all the content that was in place just for it to be largely ignored while players just took potshots at each other in the center
Thanks for these videos.. well edited and explained.
Nice to see you are almost at 50k subs. :) Keep up the great work.
People are masochist's, I remember in the summer of 2007 I did an AV that was over 6 hours long, I can't remember who won or lost, but my body was aching. People are insane.
sounds fucking epic
lol 6hrs....... i was part of one that lasted over 4 days, and it was a long weekend so i played for the majority of it.... GREAT fun
So basically you want to tell these people to get a life?
6 Hours What a cake walk I remember The camp days,go to sleep wake up 8 hours kill, die kill,Go to work come back oh this shit still going on let me get back into this.Only to last hours more. What a Blast.
The eay solution if you don't like 6 or more hour AVs is to, get this: Don't play AV.
Shocking, I know.
I played an AV today. Both factions were so evenly matched that we had to utilize everything available. Both factions got to summon their frost lord and we had a steady stream of players going backup and forth with ressources. Was awesome!
This time warp series is so nice! Thanks!
So many memories! I loved this map. Either the game was over relatively quickly or there was a fight for every meter for hours. My longest game back then was 7.5 hours.
alterac was really something special. I'll never forget those times.
gotta say I love your channel man
Let us also not forget that for Horde, you had to cross a long narrow bridge to get into the Alliance base while the NPC archers could shoot at you while the Alliance could jump through a hole in the Horde fence and never really engage any NPC until the boss.
Old AV is perfect and rewarding to the old vanilla honor system that focused on HKs. Nowadays HK's are completely irrelevant but even in something like cata or mop, the honor you got was largely victory based so I can see why blizz decided to change AV to cater to the newer honor systems. If you think about it, this sadly just couldn't possibly work in any sense on live servers, such a shame.
My warr main wasn't especially well geared[when he started AV] and for a while I had no idea how to win an AV, yet even tho we the horde seemed to lose more, I got shitloads of HKs, rep and general enjoyment from >day long battles ;]
dude keep this series i started wow in pandaria expansion and learning those things making happy
if I remember correctly, back in the days every tower had a "commander" npc defending them as well
I miss old AV
I remember wowcrendor video: "i've been in this Alterac Valley for days...It's awesome!!!
AV back in the days was the best! I have so many good memories from those daylong battles! Vanilla ruled .
2:23 Is that the same Renferal as the boss in Emerald Nightmare?
That brought back a lot of memories thx mad
OG Alterac was an _ordeal_ back on Vanilla Lightninghoof.
It will be beloved, and missed for this.
The good old days when AV took 6-10 hours to complete.
and the rest... i partook in one for 4+ days ...... they were amazing.
Man i spent my Rank14 time in Classic in Alterac rallying my allies to victory, as Warrior with a battery of eager pocket healers. It was my fav BG and i played it nonstop for a time, it was glorious und unforgetable! Those Alteracs used to last several hours and even longer. Nonstop pvp, taking towers, defending bunkers flanking maneuvers, clusterfucks allstogether with your pvp group and other pvp enthusiasts. On Horde you could spot the reaccuring names you know from other battlegrounds, which gave you addition motivation to fight.
Sadly, it later degenerated into everyone running past eachother and it turned into a contest who can kill the NPCs faster. But as we all know alot has changed in WoW, but the memories of the good times will always be with us.
Yo I love this series. Please keep it up!
This one really Aged like milk
Classic AV and Early BC AV were my favorite. I remember being a JR in HS playing until 3am going to school thinking about AV all day and then coming home and spending another 6 hours trying to win. I grinded so hard for that Black War Tiger in AV.
Holy shit. An 8 hour battleground memory came back to me.
Old alterac was definitely the thing I prefered. I remember going in to make 1k kills. You could enter a battle and see it was already going on for days, then join a few days later and it was actually the same battle ! Lots of crazy stuff in it, with the quests, npc etc to take part of the battle.
I remember a six hour AV I was in. So much fun, it was the first and only time we were able to summon the tree.
Alterac Valley was released before crossrealm BGs came, which means you only played against other faction of your own server. AVs last easily 3 days before that.
Field of Strifes (center of map) had a lot of npcs fighting against each other, every tower had one elite near it and there was two elites with couple guards roaming around in both faction territory. First Blizzard got rid of npcs in Field of Strifes, which made summonable bosses just run around in plain fields.
In BC, Blizzard took away most of the elites that "slow down" factions, moved down Horde starting base and brought up Reinforement points. Worst of the all patches, you can't fish in AV anymore.
You make the most amazing videos keep it up!!
I personally never played before MoP, so this is pretty awesome information to hear! Keep it up!
skrub
Now that Classic WoW was announced you'll have that chance... if you dare.
i will make one correction if memory serves - the brackets were 51-59 and 60 had its own bracket, to avoid people who were fully geared getting put against level 51 players who were barely geared. this was probably my favorite thing in vanilla, hours of carnage, and it rarely felt like you were going to lose until your "commander" was giving their low HP comment, and even then, a solid group of defenders could avert it. now its just a PvE rush... =(
personally, the longest run i had in one of these i think pushed 4-ish hours. my favorite BG until Strand of the Ancients came out in Wrath
what i found was you could rarely actually summon your teams elemental because you had to protect an NPC who was channeling it, and they usually got focused pretty hard. a majority of the time, if you summoned your elemental, and the other wasn't able to either get it isolated or get their own up, you won. you also got an elite NPC when you destroyed a tower, if memory serves. this meant in theory you could see 9 elites in the enemy room(including the boss)
This is like the truest battleground :D. I like it. I also liked Ashran and how that felt. Want more of that more long ongoing large scale complex battlegrounds.
I remember the quest that you picked up in Hillsbrad Foothills, I believe, that asked you to kill the horde leader in AV and you got rewarded with a pretty decent rare weapon. I remember picking it up and losing a few AV until we finally won and I was so happy as it was big upgrade to my old weapon on my retribution paladin. Ice Barber Spear I recall the name was....good times.
The version everyone starts with is always their favourite version. Mine was BC Alterac; there was a resource counter, it ticked slowly, you could still do 90% of the quests and I successfully called in an air raid once. Battles lasted about an hour, which felt right. Good times.
You forgot to mention the goblin shredder.I remember getting the mats and crafting it on my birthday, and I had quite a lot of fun with it.
I used to love that this lasted for hours. So much fun!!
Boss summoning that was something... Running into horde when av starts was just epic ! It was the real clash, now it's all about gear and some achievements and damn mounts... The point of horde vs alliance has been gone for at least 4 years now.
One of the biggest reasons I'm looking forward to Classic!
awsome video, hope they bring it back as mini holiday
I actually miss the old AV. It was always fun to see these Raid Boss strength nature lords devastate a team. I can still remember one when we managed to get Forest Lord in time after the Horde basically beat us to a pulp to our final base. We managed to retake the graveyard just across the bridge and with the Forest Lord's help, pushed them back to the middle. Then they got their Frost Lord because I guess no one had turned in their stuff. And holy crap was the battle in the middle epic! This was back when I mainly played a Warlock so being in the back row with the mages got me a great view of the chaos.
things of note that you forgot to mention:
The minelayers, and the minefields. helped slowing rushes a bit untill people firgured out how to avoid them.
Korrak only spawned after 2hours had passed in the battleground. Also the wand you got from the quest to kill him was best in slot for quite a while.
The extreme alliance bias. The ally base have the bridge which in it self can be a brutal choke point, but on top of that then their archers had way longer range and hurt way more than the horde equivalents, turning that bridge into a horde slaughterhouse.
5:08 you forgot to mention you could both heal and buff these giant monsters. So it became a strategic fight to take out the healers and bypass the front lines too.
And not to forget that Korrak the bloodrager would only spawn after the battle lasted atleast 2 hours, and the quest gave an awesome award!
This needs to be brought back to it's glory
I throughly miss this battleground experience... was there on my hunter doing ram quest and kept talking to my teammate hand over the loot and let me do the errand run... The lvl 60 throughly were happy that i took on the PVE side i remember single handlely buff and called reinforment and even got the elemental bosses out for them and kept up with the resources over n over... I remember how influence that turn of the tide did cause we were able to go further and further down the lane...Mine you this was 4 hrs later..... Once when i left...some guy whisper me if they could take over.. i said shure and i handed the role to him...we won at 12 hrs mark. And i think i was alliance at the time.
That was before alliance had cry babies from hell. I swear once every kid went through AV..magically got turn into adult and more calm and respecting one another. Largely due to the fact that AV wasnt done by one person but rather trusting another player to do a job and ultimately forming a bond over each other. There were even Several guild that would band together and try to get into an empty server AV.
I was there when they announce that they had planing for ppl getting their marks even after days of battle...I suspected it was gonna be bad....I was right They single handled destroyed a AV with the reinforment count...follow by a year later the removal of pvp item requirement to buy certain gear.....This was one of the STUPIDEST And i do mean #1 nerf they have ever done. I remember having to recruit player through my school to come play this battleground... I mean at the time there wasnt an endless battle of pvp and there still isnt to this date.
If any blizzard staff is watching...here what you do bring back AV from its former glory but instead of a reinforcement Make it a day timer of this battleground and each quest each player kill each objective taken and held add up to a point and which team get the most points after 24 been pass win the match up and have a battleground cooldown of 4 days so that player can re think and regroup and restock the supplies for the next match.
What this does is promote a healthy battleground ppl calling shots and forming bonds over this game. There wont be any incentive other then gaining honor pts and reps with various pvp reputation vendors. This can bring back about... oh i dont know ...5 million player (including myself) alot of the players. Oh and it would be nice if we had a time portal that when we are in there we are all started out as 51 and as we progress in the battle ground we level up back to 60 and let it to be that similar of gear quality. and repeat so that no one is too powerful and the role can shift for when a new player enter an existing they would be the lvl 51 doing the errand run....
I’ve only once summoned the epic boss in Alterac Valley and it was a day to remember :’) I really do miss that place when it wasn’t about rushing the Enemy captains
God I miss that! I'm looking forward to Av in Vanilla again. That's one of the main things I'm excited about
One of the best experiences in gaming if not the best.
As a WoW veteran i have to say old school AV was too damn awesome! Much better than the mindless rush its been reduced to nowadays.
This BG was a nightmare when you were dial-up and grinding to exalted for TUF.
I started WOW about 3 months after launch. The first time I ever did AV it was magical. It was so big and people were trying to do many different things and it was freakin fun! Thanks to my love of AV (I played a few games everyday of it) I go to Seargent Major rank when your rank still ticked down if you didn't keep doing BG's and things. That is the only title I ever went by because it took so long and was so much fun to get it!
Ah, I miss old AV. You could come into the game and there wold be a huge battle in the middle lasting for hours. Log out, come back the next day, and it had barely moved north/south. It was amazing.
oh wow nostalgia! My longest AV of actively playing in was 11 hours lol...some of my fondest memories of Wow!
This guy, and this series is my new Hayven.
I loved the old AV. Summoning Lok was such a blast.
A great refresher for BGs today
awesome research man! pure nostalgia
Ashran also emulates old Alterac Valley in the sense that the BG technically has no time nor ticket limit: the same Ashran fight that you'd have joined one day could still be going on the next day.
