- This is fromSept. 27, 1969 episode of The Johnny Cash Show. Johnny Cash did a awesome job singing The Battle Hymn Of The Republic. What a great and powerful song. We need more songs like this that talk about the love for God and Country.

Eagle-eyed fans will recognize The Statler Brothers backing JC. What an abundance of riches on one stage. The world will never see the likes of these great men again.
I thought there were more backup singers than needed, but maybe it was a package deal.
Johnny Cash closed his show with a gospel song .a promise he made to his mother. Im glad he did because gospel gave us so many talented singers
Amen
I was in Basic training when one morning my Drill Sergeant walked in and said " Privates i dont know if any of you know who this is or if any of you care but Jonny Cash passed away last night." Most of the platoon paid no mind however i was crushed! Jonny Cash was truly one of the greatest and there will never be another like him! Hearing him sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic always brings a tear to my eye.
He was revered by those who knew him.
Some folk here in Ireland were crushed by his death
He was a great man
I was deployed to Ecuador when I heard the news. Made sure I went out and had a few drinks for him and made sure the bar owner only played Johnny that night. I had just landed in Turkey when the enroute guys had told me Waylon had died. Funny how the great music you grew up with means so much to you and others around have no clue how great they were.
That's because you have honor. A rare thing nowadays.
Likewise for myself also, brother. My father was a WWII Veteran of Europe and North Africa. This song choked me up to tears thinking of the hell of war he and others went thru for our freedom.
What a great and powerful song. We need more songs like this that talk about the love for God and Country. Praise the Lord, Halleluja
I am not even an American (I am a Greek Orthodox Christian) however I love the Battle Hymn of the Republic and whenever I listen to it I feel the Lord's presence.
My father served in the U.S. military for almost 30 years. I heard this song a few times growing up. This is my favorite rendition and it probably always will be.
Johnny Cash sings this like he really believes it; that's what gives this version such power...
it's beautiful, isn't it?
Johnny really has seen the Glory of the LORD.
Johnny Cash originally wanted to be a gospel singer. There were too many gospel singers at the time for the record companies to want him to do gospel albums so he made his fame on other stuff but deep down inside he'd have chosen to be a moderately well known gospel singer over being a superstar.
I LOVE JOHNNY CASH AND HE SINGS THIS GREAT SONG.IM AM A TRUE PATRIOT PERSON.R.I.P.
John Sanford , not only does he feels the inter vibes of this song but, June surely gave him faith.
This song MOVES me deeply. Intensely moving. Only in God ALMIGHTY is there hope.
Gaaay
I appreciate that he sang it straight, without the inflections and trills that some artists add to classic standards to "improve" them. He demonstrates his talent without ego.
What a humble Christ follower!
As he Died to make man Holy, let ys die to make Men free. every day someone dies while attempting to make someone free. .God bless them all.
god grant us strength
And every day someone dies at the hand of (or by dereliction of) a Christian who is shouting about the glory of the Loving Forgiving Lord.
Yep. Every day 1000 Americans are dying to make a Trump free.
@@AyathTheLoafer not real Christians. anyone can call themselves anything. doesn't make it real.

"His truth is marching on"
"He is the same yesterday,today&forever....."
Unimaginable power in music.
Jesus commands to any person who has faith in Him To die To self to be set free. The civil wars and any war between supposed christians just show that men have failed God's commandments through the mouth of Jesus His begotten Son. Jesus said: Matthew 16:25 "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it".
Indeed
you hit the nail on the head
My great grandfather was one of the lucky ones who came home after the Civil War..George W. Eads. Union musician from Iowa.
My great grandfather John Medium Nixon from the Indiana 42nd, and he, too, lived through the Civil War. He mustered in in 1861 and was discharged in 1865. He was in it the entire length of the war and somehow lived through it. He was in the infantry. He lived through 16 major battles and numerous skirmishes. He was a sharp shooter for General Sherman. Thank the Lord that he was able to came home and father our clan.
Similar here. Great grand dad James and his dad Jesse went south together. They lived but the elder's health was broken. Jim studied medicine later and practiced some with a younger brother. Another was Union cavalry. They left the war where they found it. What a difference a President makes.
3rd Great Grandfather served in the 32nd Missouri Line Infantry for the Union with his brother. His brother (my 4th great uncle) was shot and killed at a battle leading up to Vicksburg. My grandfather was injured and sent home. For Union and for liberty!
Amen! Salute!!

An American song by an American patriot, Johnny Cash.
He was one of the last true American patriots. He held no hate in his heart for any of his fellow Americans. Can’t say that about a lot of people who call themselves “patriots” today.
A patriot and a liberal.
@P1 Styles And a commie by the far right Republicans. He would be a man without a country by todsys standards.
@P1 Styles, that shows the dumb point of view, that "Democrats" prove today.
I think, that actually real patriots get offended that way by people, who have no knowledge about nationalsocialism, moreover they form their opinions based on political left-sided way of reporting .
I am not from USA, but from Austria, but we have right (!!!) the same problem here!
@P1 Styles As a leftist, this is not true. I disagree with liberals on most everything-- but Johnny Cash cannot be considered right-wing by any sense of the word. Johnny Cash was a leftist.
I am an proud Australian, but! I have always loved this song, never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
I was crying playing this at 4:36 eastern time today, In stellarium the child came through the womb of the woman. revelation 12. Satan has been kicked out of heaven forever! We are going home!
Well, darling, you can apply it to Australia, no? We won't stop you.
@@RaptureReadyforJesus-qv2qlYou lost me with the bit about Satan.

Jonny Cash .....one of the best.....

Johnny Cash..... THE BEST
According to a historian, this song was the most favorite military song of late President Abraham Lincoln who loved it so much that he made repeated requests for the band to play.
Classical music 74 I think it might be Dixie that is the favorite song. Regardless it’s a classic.
i think that he had this and dixie played at his second innauguration
My heart and actions are utterly unclouded...! They are all those of 'Justice'!
@Funny Valentine have you listened to Elvis (the pelvis) Presley’s rendition?
Ive been playing it for nearly three days straight
My father was a 1972 U.S. Army veteran who served his country in Germany. He is my greatest hero. As I watched this video, I had a vision that brought tears to my eyes. I can see myself at his burial service, standing by his casket while the band plays this song, and I give my father a thank you salute for not only being my hero, but also being a wonderful father to me and my four siblings, and being a wonderful husband to my mother.

Big thanks to your dad, though I'm sorry about his passing. He's a hero! Whereabout in Germany did he serve? My mother was born on a U.S. Army Base in Frankfurt, Germany, in the 1950's while my grandfather was serving.

Wow, just wow - Johnny could both tell AND sing a story!
Little poor boy from Dyersburg, Arkansas went on to become a national treasure.Beautiful.
There is no such place as Dyersburg Arkansas. Johnny Cash is from Kingsland Arkansas, but for a time lived in Dyess
John R. CASH was born in Kingsland (AR) and raised in Dyess
(AR). His family moved to Dyess when he was 3 years old in 1935. /CD
My late aunt's family (Duncans) were neighbors of the Cash family in Dyess. It was a government project which provided housing and land to Arkansas residents to enable them to become self-sufficient.
Arkansas, we are the original 1 percenters
Was from Kingsland. And its Dyer Arkansas. Take it from a local been to both towns
This is absolutely beautiful. Bless the great American who is Johnny Cash. RIP, good sir.

Oh and lest we forget the great artists that gathered and collegiality supported, Johnny, in creating such musical magic - a further thank you to June Carter Cash a five-time Grammy award-winning American singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, comedian/comedienne, and author, a member of the Carter Family [the eldest daughter of Md. Maybelle Carter] and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash; the other members of the Carter family female choir quartet [known as The Carter Sisters & Mother Maybelle] - comprising matriarch "Mother Maybelle Carter", June Carter Cash, Helen Carter & youngest sister Anita Carter; ONE of the other members of the "Million Dollar Quartet", the brilliant guitarist and singer-songwriter, Carl Perkins, [the other members incl. The King Of Rock 'N' Roll, Elvis Presley, The Killer that is "Mister Jerry Lee Lewis" and of course last but by no means least, the man that led the poor, disadvantaged, downtrodden and disenfranchised people, the "Man in Black" himself, Johnny]; The Statler Brothers [or just plain-simple "Statler"] gospel-country quartet comprising between 1955-1983, Donald "Don" Reid who sang lead; Harold "Harry" Reid, Don's older brother, who sang bass; Phillip "Phil" Balsley who sang baritone; and Lewis "Lew" DeWitt Jr who sang tenor as backing vocalists and made up the male choir members [as a male counterpoint for the "The Carter Sisters & Mother Maybelle) for Johnny Cash road and TV show between 1964-197?]; and last but by no means least, yet again, "The Tennessee Three" comprising, Marshall Grant on bass/double-bass, W S "Fluke" Holland on drums, originally Luther Perkins [no relation to Carl Perkins] on lead guitar on a Fender Esquire electric guitar (forerunner of the later legendary Fender Telecaster - guitar of choice of such illuminaries as "The Boss - Bruce Springsteen"; Chrissie Hinds, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Bob Dylan, Jeff Beck, Steve Cropper & et al greats] and the original architect of the "boom-chick-a-boom" or "freight train" rhythmic pattern of Johnny Cash's Backing Band on both the road and later on JC's TV Show, and replacing Luther [after his tragic death in July 1969 from an earlier house fire in 1968, caused by an unattended lit cigarette after Luther fell asleep], Robert "Bob" Grant; and the many other individual talents that accompanied, Johnny Cash, through and during the entirety of his illustrious & brilliant musical career spanning some fifty-years. Johnny and yes ALL OF YOU, thank you sincerely, for the inspirational music and vocal legacies and the ensuing memories, to which we have, to always and forevermore, hold-fast...

A great, great man. He did so much bringing his songs into this world.❤😂❤😢
When Johnny Cash first started recording, there were a few Civil War veterans still alive.
There was just very few probably less than 3 the last one died in 1956 and the last one who saw combat died 1953 they were both in the union. Cash’s career started in 1954.

One was a confederate I believe died in the 50’s sometime then
@@curiousentertainment3008 crazy to think how the war was started in 1861, the war ended in 1865, and the last one died in 1956. the last survivor was at least 95 years old, and that's if they were 1 years old when they started. you had to be about 16 to fight in the war, and 95+16 is 111. The last survivor was around a hundred and eleven years old. what a fighter!

Thank you dear God for allowing Johnny Cash to be amongst here on earth.
Which 'god' might that be? There are over 3000 gods and goddesses worshipped (equally vehemently and passionately) across Planet earth every single day. The one that any particular person believes in is primarily driven by (i) Geography and (ii) What their parents told them prior to the age of 12yrs.

Oh great. There's always got to be one of THESE types. Look, if someone wants to thank God for something, who the bloody hell are you to tell them what they can and can't believe? Why do you even leave these comments anyway? You think this is an argument that nobody has ever heard and you're shedding light into the darkness here? You're actually parroting commonly repeated statements that have already been refuted if you take a moment to do a Google search. If you're an atheist in this day in age.... it's because you're being LAZY

When I hear this song it reminds me of the men who gave all they could give so that we could live in a free country. I believe it was George Washington who made the statement, "The thing that sets the American Christian apart from all other people in the world is that he will die on his feet before he lives on his knees." We are American's and that is what says it all. God bless this country again.

I cannot find anything saying George Washington said that, I know the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata once said it's better to die on your feet, then to live on your knees.

It's "let us DIE to make men free"! Why do they never sing that anymore?
i don't know, but when i sing it, i do say DIE

Well as Patton might have sang it "let them DIE to make men free!"

My Great-great, great Uncle died in that war. And my Great, Great, Great Grandfather brought his body home after the battle he was killed in. They joined together, served together, & returned home together; tho "Grandpa Reed" had to return again to battle.

That is a BS comment. Almost all do. You just may not agree with them. lol. Oh.. I get it - it has to be a Christian belief... It irritates me when people grandstand their beliefs with this attitude. To me, Christianity is between you and your Lord, and mine is not between you and my Lord and me. In the end we are all judged - hoping he looks on us both favorably though.
@@dropbear6740 What are we talking about ... the mob on Wall Street? I could go on and on but you wonder why there are mobs forming? There are homeless everywhere while people are arguing about who has the biggest house and buying glamour houses at an ever increasing rate... I'm a bit skeptical about the statement that both sides sang this song, at least this version of it. Especially since Julia Ward Howe (the lyricist) was an abolitionist.
It is possible that confederates sung this without knowing its true meaning because the song slaps so hard.
