    Hi Scott, this tutorial is THE BEST on UA-cam. You go through EVERYTHING including those "SHOOT" settings. I just ordered a second XPro C ( for Canon ) on Amazon on Thursday and it arrived yesterday, so am playing with it now, I'm going to try using this as a "remote control" to change my flashes ( off camera ) in terms of light output. I want to try and get this second XPro controller to work as a master controller so I can change flash output without touching the camera during shooting when I'm bracketing shots. When you have the camera setup on a solid tripod, you can still introduce a bit of camera shake when you are changing flash power output, so thought I would try that experiment. I will let you know. So basically the setup will be like this -- one XPro on my camera, 2 flashes on light stands many feet away from camera. A second XPro to use as a mater remote to control or override the settings on the XPro on the camera's hotshoe.... I'm hoping it will work and I'll give you my results. BTW, I am using the newest Yongnuo flashes ( YN600EX-RT II ) but they are both connected to Godox X1-R receivers.

      Hey thanks so much! I'm definitely looking forward to how that works out for you, thanks for keeping me updated :) That setup could definitely be useful when going to take light readings with a light meter too, don't have to take the trigger off the camera each time. Cheers!

      Hi Scott ! just a mini update and I'll reply with more info as I get further into testing. So I tried getting this to all work with a Yongnuo flash ( YN600EX-RT II ) connected to the Godox X1-R trigger ( the very basic model that only has channel and group settings ) It did NOT fire the flash using the camera shutter button. When I did press the shutter button on my Canon dslr, the info is being relayed to the Godox X1R but NOT to the Yongnuo flash. I could see this, because there was a little red light indicator that flashed when I pressed the camera's shutter button. So the signal stops there. I knew I had success with the Godox X1r before, then realized --- doh ! this was with my old Canon 580EXII flashes ! ... so I hooked one of these up, ( so the Canon 580EX II flash attaches to the Godox X1R - you slide the flash onto the hotshoe of the Godox X1R , and then onto your lightstand ) and BINGO ! it works. I put the camera into manual mode, and then fired a few shots with the camera's shutter button.... everything works flawlessly. I was able to change the flash output of the Canon 580EXII by using that second Godox Xpro-c transmitter. I went from one extreme to the other .... 1/128 to 1/1 and also in-between settings, and the camera pictures reflect those changes, ( amount of light in the photograph ) For those reading, I used 2 Godox XPro-C units... for these tests... one on the camera's hotshoe, one in my hand. There are NO cables required with this setup. **** -- Now --- something with the Yongnuo flashes is conflicting with the Godox flash technogy, so it may be just a matter of turning off a setting on the Yongnuo flash ( YN600EX-RT II - which is the newest small flash in case any one is wondering -- ) I wish I knew about these before I bought the newest Canon flashes. argh ! Anyway, that's it..... I will do more testing, but this is amazing. BTW, for anyone who may be asking..... my Canon 580 EXII flashes are in mint condition, and work like they just came out of a new box, and that is why I still have them in my collection. Oh -- forgot to mention --- On the Godox XPro-c transmitter that is on the camera hotshoe --- I tried these tests with it in "app" mode, also the "3 people" icon mode" and also the "one person" mode..... and all modes work exactly the same. ( perfectly ) So this shows you that second Godox XPro controller is pretty darn powerful ! ... and if you do a lot of shoots that require ZERO camera movement and a lot of flash output changes (exposure changes ) this is an amazing way to go !!

    • @FrostyTheBeerMan
      @FrostyTheBeerMan 6 років тому +1

      AND another update ! ---- I also now have the new Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II working with this same setup Scott ! --- wow !!

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 років тому +1

      Hey great update! Thanks so much!! Glad to hear it worked out, what was it that you did to get the Yongnuo flashes working?

    • @FrostyTheBeerMan
      @FrostyTheBeerMan 6 років тому +1

      Morning Scott, I thanks ! and if I get any other little tests done, I'll let you know. I think the flashes weren't on the Godox X1r receivers correctly. The first time I did it, they just refused to fire... so I had taken it all apart ( just removed everything from one another to put it away ) then later I thought I'll try it again, after I had done the tests with the old Canon 580EX II models, hooked one up... bingo, it works... I was scratching my head,... so connected the second Yongnuo flash up, and it worked also.... I'm going to do it again today to see if it still works, and that it wasn't just a fluke. BTW, when you have the Yongnuo flash in slave mode, you see specific info on the LCD screen on the flash, but as soon as you slide on that Godox X1R receiver thing, that info disappears, so it is indeed cancelling out something on the flash. All is good though it works. So the bottom line - this is an amazing thing if you are doing flash shots, like room interiors, and you want zero movement. It's also amazing for product photography too.... before, I was shooting, and always touching the XPro receiver on the camera hotshoe... and given enough times changing settings, you know you will eventually get some pictures that are slighty out of whack because you touched the camera a bit too much and it moved. This way - using that second Xpro receiver, you have so much power in your hands... and you never have to touch that camera ( I'm just writing this for anyone reading this in the future by the way ) I have yet to get this stuff to work with the Yongnuo receiver which I also have 2 of ( YN-E3-RT ) -- amazing little pieces of equipment too.... and of course, your videos are what sparked me on my journey ! - great videos, THE best on UA-cam. Many out there you can be sure are looking for info, and may not find your videos on Yongnuo and Godox equipment, but in time hopefully they will.... a great library you are building up and I have to thank you again Scott !!

    Love Godox for what they have done, on that note the main issue(s) are if you're using non Godox strobes you can not control the lights even with the firmware updates. All you have is a trigger it's looking like Yongnuo is the only flash controller that will work with your mix of lights.

    NIKON FLASH USERS BEWARE: You cant change mode or flash power from the transmitter using Nikon flashes!!
    This is from the Godox website...
    Q: When using X1N with Nikon flash, the mode and output can not be adjusted, while the Canon does.
    A:
    It is because the Nikon flash system are not allowed the signal from the camera hot shoe to the flash. When using X1N, can use TTL mode to calculate the other modes and outputs, so the flash must be set TTL mode. As for Canon, it allow the signal from camera hot shoe to flash, so X1C trigger can control the flash mode and outputs.

    • @billkoeh
      @billkoeh 4 роки тому

      You CAN change TTL fec from the X ProN transmitter but this is not reflected on the Nikon flash lcd. It simply reads "0ev" no matter what flash value you input from the X ProN. The light output DOES change tho (I tested this.)

      Yeah I like to use Godox flashes or the AD200 together with my Elinchrom lights and it's definitely a little frustrating to not have that top hot shoe. I've been setting my Elinchrom lights to be triggered optically though since I can change the settings with my light meter, then change the Godox settings with the Xpro. Far from perfect, but I hate the X1 now haha.

    There is one thing that photographers need to know when purchasing this trigger and that it was not mentioned in the video. THE TRIGGERS ONLY WORKS TO THE FULLEST USING ALKALINE REGULAR BATTERIES do not use re-chargable ones. You are welcome.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 років тому

      When you say only works to the fullest, what do you mean exactly? Are you referring to the battery meter not showing full battery when using re-chargeable batteries? I use it with re-chargeables all the time and that's the only downside I've seen in a full year of using this.

    • @manduja75
      @manduja75 5 років тому

      @@ScottDumas yeah that part of the battery being drained really quicly and also more misfires on the flashes. I just discovered this the moment i purchased two transmittors at a wedding and was furious because also the trigger was not turning on and everything was because of the batteries. After implementingthem batteries I had no issues and no misfires on the AD200 nor the 860s

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 років тому

      I don't think it actually drains the batteries at all- the meter just doesn't read them correctly so you can't go by the display.
      As for the misfires, I'm not sure what happened for you, but I've almost never had a misfire or problems turning the trigger on even once in a whole year of using it and I've only used re-chargeable batteries in it. (well, maybe 95% of the time).

    Very nice and explanatory video! Thank you so much!
    I just received my XPro for Fuji cameras. However, thinking about that I was a Nikon shooter switching to Fuji systems, I still have flashes for Nikon. Here is my question: should I purchase the “Receiver” X1R for Nikon or for Fuji in order to continue using my Nikon flashes. Any advice from you? It will be highly appropriate.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 років тому

      Hi! Thank you for watching! :) The X1R-F should be able to receive the TTL signal from the Fuji camera, so that would be the one you want :) However, I've heard some people have issues with it, and IF it's a possibility you might be better off just trading in the Nikon flashes for some Godox ones, or add a couple to what you already have to avoid any issues. Hope that helps!

    Using Xpro and X1T together in order to remotely control your flashes.
    When I'm alone in the studio and work in front of the camera, I make sure the Xpro is on cam and shoot settings are in One-shoot, then I can control the flash settings from the x1t that I carry with me, and the pro is just a dumb trigger. If the pro gets turned of and turned on again it will initially send out all its settings to the flashes, but that is easy to solve, by sending a test flash from the x1t trigger in your hand those settings take over again. This way I can trigger my cam either with the phone using wifi, or the laptop shooting tethered, depending on usage situation and not having to walk over to the cam to adjust flash settings (gets old very quickly).
    Unfortunately, I haven't been able to disable the "send all settings for every flash" on the x1t, so I can't leave it on the cam using the much nicer interface on the pro as my mobile controller. If anybody knows how to disable that on the x1t, I would really like a hint!

    Hi, Scott, thank you for a great tutorial, yes, much better than the manual. My goal in using Godox Xpro/X1 ttl combo was to be able to remotely change the manual power output of my Nikon SB-800 or SB 5000. After trying out the system, I have been unable to change the power output of either of these flashes. Can it be done?

    Hi Scott, I have the Xpro trigger using with my Godox. Can you explain why I should use manual versus TTL? Also I am not sure how to change settings from trigger in TTL (do u have to be in manual)? Please do another video on this. Thank you!!!

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  3 роки тому

      Hi! TTL is kind of like automatic mode on the camera. It will judge the image's exposure through the lens (TTL) and automatically output the flash power that gets a good exposure. It can definitely work in certain situations (using it as a main/key light or sometimes bouncing the flash off a wall or ceiling will give good results)... but if you have multiple flashes or are using it as a side/back light, it will become more and more difficult for the flash to judge proper exposure. In those cases (or if you want perfectly consistent results) Manual mode is better. In TTL mode you can dial in exposure compensation if you want the image brighter or darker than average, but manual mode is where you'll really be able to fully adjust the settings. Hope that helps!

    Great video- thanks. I had one question though as I was considering something like this or a pocketwizard. I'm interested in using this for wedding reception where I want to be able to quickly turn on/off one of the groups like you can with the pocket wizards. Is there a way you can do that with these by holding down the group button or something? Or do you have to hit the group button then hit the mode button to turn it to off? I assume if you cycle through modes to off and then 30 seconds later cycle it again back to manual it'll still hold the same manual setting it was last set to?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 років тому

      Thanks so much for watching! :) At the moment I don't believe there's any way to turn groups on or off with a single push, you'd have to choose the group then cycle through the modes like you said. It's only a total of like 2 or 3 pushes though and you can still get it done fairly quickly once you get used to it. The settings do also stay as they are when you turn each group off and on unless you change anything manually in between there. I've used it like that with no problem setting a few lights one by one using TTL and the TCM function to get the exposures, turning each off then back on in between and it all worked fine.
      I don't have them anymore but I think the Cactus trigger lets you turn groups on and off one by one with the push of a button like that. Besides Godox, Cactus is the best brand of flashes I've used except the overpriced CaNikon ones, so if that's something you really need I'd recommend it. Otherwise the Xpro is still pretty fast and it's nice that you can use everything together including the AD200 and other studio strobes.

      If you mean an actual Canon speedlight I think you'd need the X1-R on the bottom of it, but if you just mean a Canon model of the Godox flash, you can connect it but you won't get auto features like TTL. It should still trigger the flash manually though... as far as I can remember

    Nice information, this has helped me a lot as I just purchased the trigger and had trouble understanding it. Can you please make a video on how to use it with ad200 in hss. And also elaborate on tcm functions.. If am not wrong it basically calculate the ttl settings and copy it on to manual , this way then we don't want to have separate light meter for reading. Please correct me on this.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 років тому

      Hey thanks so much! Glad it was helpful :) I did make a video showing how the HSS works compared to the X1T, maybe that could be useful. If you want to check it out, this is the link: ua-cam.com/video/cTuscDRrlXc/v-deo.html
      Also, you're correct about TCM :) Of course, the TTL reading won't be as accurate or consistent as using a light meter, so if you have time a light meter is probably still the better choice (it can also make accurate readings for hair lights, rim lights, background lights etc, which TTL can't really do). But, in certain situations or when you're in a rush, using TCM to copy the TTL results over to a manual setting can be effective and at least give you a good starting point without having to use a light meter. :)
      Hope that helps!

      Unless you turn on high speed sync, most cameras are limited to 1/200 or 1/250 shutter speed with flash. I forget exactly how it's done in Nikon menus but there is somewhere you can turn on high flash sync speed and then you can use HSS on the Godox for higher shutter speeds.

      As for the AD360 (mark I)... As I understand it you can use the XTR16 receiver on the AD360 to allow triggering and manual power adjustment from the X1T or Xpro (or another flash used as a master). As it is without anything extra though it's not listed as compatible.

    Oops - don't see my first question. Sorry if it duplicates:
    Will the XPro be able to trigger a Nikon SB900 in HSS mode if I get the X1R receiver? Page 20 of the manual show a Nikon SB910 as an example of how you can use the XPro as a wireless trigger. Be nice if I could also use the HSS functions on the Nikon flash too.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  6 років тому

      No problem! I've replied to the other comments as well, but basically I think it should be okay. I haven't tried it with that flash specifically but I think HSS will work with most flashes cross brand as long as the flash has HSS capabilities. For example, the X1R-C can allow me to use Canon's HSS through the Godox Xpro trigger and a Yongnuo YN686.

    Two weeks ago I thought I had this thing figured-out. And then...I accidentally hit a wrong button somewhere and none of my Godox flashes are responding. So I'm back to square one. I think Godox should think about sponsoring a grad-level course in programming this system at MIT or equivalent technical institute. But then Godox has already exhibited a disregard of consumer confusion re this gizmo. Why cannot this Pandora's Box have it's menu system divided into three distinct (fully separated from one another so the consumer always knows which mode is which?) operating modes? As is, it's a nearly impossible hodge-podge of ill-labeled buttons and ridiculously tiny unfamiliar icons. Why the big screen if they stick to teensy-weensy icons? Why the instruction manual written in sub-standard "English"? They don't make enough profit to hire an unemployed US English major to edit their user manuals? Or is it (here comes my conspiracy mode) some deep cynical plot to drive Americans completely insane? Judging from questioners..and questions.. on this single channel...Godox has unleashed a serious "mind-f**k" on its customers....and for no readily-apparent reason. In all ... I really REALLY like Godox products. I don't "get" why this unit was put-to-market with this lame operating system. But wait !! Maybe I'm just to stupid to know I'm stupid. Yes..perhaps so.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  3 роки тому

      If the flashes aren't responding at all after hitting a single button by mistake, it could be that the channel was changed and doesn't match the lights anymore. That would be the first thing I check. Sorry to hear about the frustration though, Flash menus in general (not only Godox) can be quite frustrating.

  • @jeffbrown8117
    @jeffbrown8117 4 роки тому

    New to flashes. What do you mean “zoom in” in terms of flashes?
    Also, what does the “+0.3” mean next to the power settings on the channels?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  4 роки тому +1

      Zoom on a flash is actually physically zooming the flash head in and out inside the flash body... it creates a wider or narrower beam of light (to either cover a wider area with wide angle lenses or fill a softbox more evenly, or get more concentrated brightness with a longer zoom, like a spot light)
      I think that the +0.3 you're referring to is for example "1/4 +0.3", right? That represents 1/3 steps between each power level. So there are 3 steps from 1/4 power to 1/2 power (0, +0.3, +0.7). Much like full stops and 1/3 stops on camera settings such as aperture, ISO or shutter speed.
      Hope that helps! :)

    I purchased a Sony a7lll when it first came out. I was a Canon shooter and also have 4 Yongnuo YN565EXll for Canon. In order to still use the Yongnuo flashes with my Sony I purchased 4 Godox X1R”s.
    I also added the Godox XPros to place in my hotshoe and control the cameras. The flashes work but changing the settings on the flashes with the XPro are hit and miss. I recently purchased a TT685S. I can change the setting on the TT685 with the XPro but getting a lot of failed flashes and I mean a lot of them on the TT685. I have tried different fresh batteries but with the same result.
    I shoot real estate and need a reliable flash and use them all the time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 років тому

      Hi! Thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the Xpro. Hearing that my best guess would be that the Xpro is somehow not fully mounted to the camera or there is damage on the contacts making it have inconsistent communication with the X1Rs and the TT685. I've never had that issue with mine and the fact that changing batteries or flashes don't have any affect makes me thing there's definitely a connection issue.
      One thing I would like to know is if pushing the test button manually on the Xpro fires the flashes consistently? Is the problem only when pushing the camera's shutter button or is it giving you trouble even from the button?
      If the button works fine, the contacts should be the root of the problem. If the button also gives you problems perhaps it's something in the hardware of the Xpro that's faulty and I'd try to exchange it if possible.
      I hope that helps! let me know :)
