I recently unsubscribed from Peter McGinnon for that exact reason. I liked his energy, and sometimes he had useful information etc., but at some point I just realized; he's wasting my time with this bullshit about snow scooters and coffee and what not. Not if there's channels like Sean that provide high integrity, high quality and no BS content like this.

I'm always left inspired from watching your videos Sean. I'm right at the infancy of my photography career, been interested for many years and at 35 I'm taking the plunge and bought a camera, and I'm soaking up all this knowledge from all over the place. Your videos are not only very informative, but for me at least they convey a sense of calm and focus at the same time. There's a lot to think about, but the information is relayed in such a way that it feels like with every sentance there's a hint of "you can do this, you'll be fine" submerged in the wording.
    Thank you.

You can suck even more power out of the ad200 if you go without HSS, camera base sync speed and ND filter. Because HSS is pulsed light, it's always weaker.

A good tip for people without a strobe or high speed sync:
You can use your speed light and experiment with ND-filters. You’ll loose less power on your speed light this way. If it’s still not enough, you can bring your light in even closer (depending on your choice of focal length, subject size and framing of course).

I've always avoided working this way, only because I have felt it would be complex or somehow awkward, but this shows it doesn't need to be so. That AD200 is so impressive, and easy to take out into the field too by the looks of it. Thanks Sean, you've, as always, got me thinking!

Would just like to add that using HSS will reduce a speedlight's output power. As demonstrated by Sean here, the AD200 can perform adequate HSS work for portrait work at 1/2 power in bright daylight. However, by attaching an ND filter(3-5 stops) it's possible to increase the speedlight's output power. Something to consider.

Sean, thank you for amazing video always. With your videos like this one and other creators UA-cam videos, I'm getting comfortable with speed lights shooting portraits. What I am struggling is to tell a rich story like your MENTOR video. The 3 three-piece portraits have an extremely powerful message. My portrait shoot is getting like a routine, find a person and shoot it, but there is nothing to tell. I'm starting to feel that the story building is totally another skill set and the photography is a way to express it. Do you think you can touch on this subject of the story building/telling using the photography in a future video because there is no other photographer on UA-cam can do it (as far as I know).

@@brianc2651 thanks for the comment. or over a series of images with some supplemental writings (or some sort) if necessary. Sean's mentor portraits get more powerful after watching the video. Telling a story in a single image is bloody difficult. I'm thinking setting a theme and telling a story over a series of portraits.then, it becomes a non-photography thing. What is my key message? How to find subjects for the theme? I go out shooting to be better photographer, but now it's time to sit down and think what do I want to tell the world.

    • @brianc2651

Masatsugu FUJINAKA I have never “conversed” with anyone in the UA-cam app before? Let’s see if this reply works? Yes, I agree with your message to me. First decide or have something to say... I think that message has to be clear in your mind. Once you have your message clearly in your mind, then think about and decide how to convey that with a subject and perhaps a prop or two in a portrait image? Then finding that subject et al. Is the hard part. I’m thinking an example of this might be “Mother’s are the heart of a family”. So how could this be conveyed within a portrait? I’m thinking of examples in my head...

    • @MasatsuguFUJINAKA
      @MasatsuguFUJINAKA 5 років тому

@@brianc2651 the reply worked. Yes, you are right. "have something to say" is also difficult. I'm struggling to just live my life. Do I have a say to the world? Not sure yet... And plotting, etc, etc, and as you pointed out, finding the subjects. I've been chasing the technical side of the photography. now I'm hitting a wall making them meaningful....

Do you ever key from the same side as the sun? As if you had the sun at a quarter backlight and then you use the flash to sort of wrap the light around the subject on the same side as your back key. I have tried this a few times (in film) and it makes it seem like the sun is doing all of the work. Just wondering if you had done this with photos, if so would love to see some examples!!

I am a filmmaker who loves photography and learning high sync speed flash photography online by watching your videos. I have a sony a7iii and bought Godox ad 200 pro and x2t trigger after watching your videos.
I am facing this issue where I am unable to push my camera shutter speed beyond 1/200 once I attach the godox x2t trigger. Tried almost every available camera settings after watching a lot of videos. But nothing is working. The moment I turn on the trigger the shutter speed goes back to 1/250 while I want to use 1/8000.
It would be of great help if you could pin point where I might be going wrong. Or maybe share a video or article which I can go through so that I cando HIGH SPEED SYNC shoot at 1/8000.
It would be agreat great great help.

    Hi Sean,
I subscribed to your channel a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying your content. I'm very interested in specific in portrait photography. My background is in motion and the practice of flash is all new to me.
I'm hitting a wall when it comes to, triggers, slaves, what is brand specific, what isn't, different triggering functions, manual,.htt, etc. It seems like it can get pretty complicated. I've been picking up bits and pieces from all the videos I've been watching. It would be great if you could produce a tutorial that really breaks down the technical specifics and relationships between flash lights and triggers. I really enjoy your style of presentation.
I know I want to get DP200, a modifier and a trigger to get started learning. I don't know what I need to buy and how to determine alternate settings. Something comprehensive, step by step and clear will be greatly appreciate.
Thank you for your contributions to helping others. I really appreciate that you have done some of your work traveling on public transport with your equipment in tow. I want to focus on business headshots, portraits, school pictures and pets could be fun as well.

i think a brolly box like that is one of my favorite modifiers; it breaks down easy and travels well.

Really helpful to me. I can't afford a light meter. Not really interested in getting that technical anyway. I'm a novice and still mastering manual mode and the exposure triangle. Always knew a flash was super helpful outside but never really understood how to get all the settings right in daylight. Thanks for breaking it down and simplifying this for us newbies. This teaching style gets me up and running and improving my skills quickly.

Hi Sean. I started pursing photography as a serious hobby underwater two decades ago. Now I shoot mainly bird-in-flight and landscape and do not own a strobe. Nonetheless, I keep coming back to your channel and today I came away with some new insights about fill light that could help my landscape compositions. Not with gear, just thinking more about natural fill light reflectors that could improve the light when it choses not to be ideal. Thanks for sharing.

What if you had placed a small 22 dollar diffuser between the sun and your subject as close to your subject as your softbox to soften the sunlight?

How did you set your display on the 7 III? Sunny or manual on sunny days? For me, the display brightness never matches the result later on the computer. Greetings from Cologne.

If i don't use a diffusion panel between the subject and the speedlite, what do you think about TTL mode? Thank you in advance...

I find TTL mode slows me down because the metering can change from shot to shot. Shooting in Manual gives me consistency.
