    These low cost fully manual flash. Keep in mind their limitations before considering it. Highspeed sync only works wirelessly with the correct combination of trigger and camera. As an affiliate of these shops linked below, I earn from qualifying purchases. What matters is time from the click (usually 24 hours or less), not the product linked so I don't care if you buy this specific thing or not.

    Great review & tutorial. I bought mine after my Yongnuo transistor conked out. In comparison, Godox are rugged and well made. I've used it on camera, bounced & diffused on product shots (in Manual mode). Also great as Optical slave if you don't have triggers for fill light etc.. No TTL but who wants that?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 років тому +1

      I personally find full manual flash easier and more consistent to manage, especially when it's off-camera and multiple flash in the scene. Yeah, TTL is useful in some situations when all that's needed is fill.

    • @ScottJWaldron

      It's metal, so I'd say it's at least solid. For the tripod connection you would probably want an extra long screw so a bolt could be used. Otherwise it tends to loosen. I think this is the one I have: www.adorama.com/fassc3.html

      Scott Waldron Ah, yes, I see - THANKS! It appears that it would indeed benefit from redrilling at the 1/4-20 hole at the bottom and threading that position with at least a 3/8-inch hole for a more robust mount, and make a matching connection on a good flash stand. Before your video here, I'd been agonizing over the prices of even "cheap" battery powered monolights. I HAVE the flashes, so You just saved me some major dollars, Sir!

    2020: ... I just got this flash, you want the red light flashing to tell you that your flash is working in the mode... he's being personal, it's also a good way to tell you that your flash is still working.
    1. I was able to max out my shutter at 1/4000, F11, ISO400 at 1/4 power at 6ft away and I have an ALMOST exposed test frame. Can clearly see what it is. Couple stops down on shutter, done.
    2. Another shot at 1/4000 F5.6 ISO 100 at 1/8th power at 6ft away and although is under exposed quite a bit, you can still see the subject. Couple stop on shutter, done.
    3. Took a final shot, 1/2000, F11, ISO400 5ft ... shot exposed.
    It does not take much for this light to produce great results. I can foresee this working very swell in daylight. Post up in the shade somewhere, drop that shutter down and bring that light even at 1/16 power and can probably produce some smooth results.. 1/8-1/4 at the most for non full pops. The light is a much much better kelvin than some of the other speedlites that are just too blue. This one blues perfectly and my white balance is fantastic. There's one on amazon for $58. GET IT PEOPLE!

    Thank you so much for this video! So kind of you to help us all. A question, just to make sure: if you don't have a trigger, can you use this flash as a trigger for strobe lights? Put it directly on the cam, and use the light , only the light, of the flash to trig the strobe light?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому +1

      That would depend on if the strobe has that capability to be a "slave" (usually labeled s1/s2 based on when it should trigger, in this case with a non-ttl flash it would likely be s1). It's all on the receiving light seeing a flash of light and taking action. There are various issues that can happen with this method of triggering.

    • @strattheodoratou7391
      @strattheodoratou7391 4 роки тому

      @@ScottJWaldron I tested the strobe with a sony sybershot flash and it worked perfectly, so I hope I will work with the flash

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому

      That's probably in TTL mode (meaning there is a preflash before the photo is taken to gauge exposure and then the actual flash pulse happens). In the case of the TT600, the strobe will need to be in the other slave mode because it's being used in single pin full manual mode when on the camera. Remember that all useful features of this flash are only good when it's being used wirelessly. I don't see why you just don't use the flash on the camera. You've confirmed it works.

      Top left button on the back that shows "mode" and a little graphic of zig-zag arrows. You have to long-press (hold down) the button. Once you did a long-press you use the main wheel dial to cycle through (off/master/slave) for wireless. When wireless is on you will get the red flashing light on the front of the flash. I haven't used the flash in a long time and had your same difficulty for a bit! It's not obvious that the wheel selector control needs to be used.

    1. What is the difference between TT600 universal vs dedicated like TT600s? Since i have different camera product i want to buy 1 TT600GFuji, 1 TT600sony and 1 TT600 universal..i thought universal hotshoe meaning that we can attach this flash in every camera but lose some feature like TTL or HSS..is it right?
    2.if i use one of this flash ex: TT600f for fuji on fuji camera hot shoe, does it mean that i can use all the feauture this flash provide such as HSS?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому +1

      I only have experience with what was shown in the video, so I will speculate to answer your questions. The TT600S has a physically different hotshoe connection that Sony used for a while (no longer the case), but it should be effectively the same flash function wise. Does a TT600F exist? I don't know. I don't think so. If it does exist you shouldn't get anything special when it is on the camera (on-camera all that happens is the camera triggering the flash, there is only a single pin on the hotshoe). You need to buy the trigger relevant for the camera system you use. So for Fujifilm you need the X1TF, X Pro F, or whatever fujifilm specific trigger to get full wireless function. All that said, all special functions of this flash ONLY happen wirelessly with the proper trigger for your camera system.

    Very informative, Scott - THANKS! After watching this, this flash seems very much the same as the Godox TT685? A year ago, I bought the TT685 and its X1 trigger (which I prefer over the new trigger because it has a hot pass-thru shoe on top in case you want the trigger combined with on camera speedlight). Anyway, I am blown away that this TT600 has the HSS when off camera - Wow! So, I'd really like to get one because of the price and HSS feature, but feel like I'm missing something important. Can you help by explaining the difference between TT685 and TT600, please? Is the only difference that one has TTL and the other does not? Is that all? Thanks again.
    PS: I didn't even know this flash existed before seeing your video - Ha. Subscribed.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому +3

      I had a TT685 for a while, but eventually sold it. I prefer the simpler interface of the TT600 to the TT685 and I don't shoot on-camera flash much at all. The TT600 is a "dumb" flash where it has a single pin on the hotshoe. That means when on the camera all you get is triggering. Off camera is where this flash shines. Both on and off camera, TT600 has no *auto* power level adjustments (TTL) like the TT685 has. Meaning you always set the power of the flash either on the flash or through a trigger wirelessly. Though, with the type of flash photography I do, I rarely have any interest in letting the camera control flash power in some auto mode. When off camera you get wireless power control, groups, and HSS (with a trigger that supports it while it's on a camera that supports HSS... so not the XT16, but any of the X1T, XT32, X1Pro). Of course, cameras like the cheap Nikons that can't do HSS still won't be able to do HSS wirelessly (D3000 series). I've only used the Nikon X1T trigger and the XT16, but I assume you would get HSS with any of the X1T/XT32/X1Pro triggers for the brands they support on the proper camera of the given brand. The main drawback I see of the TT600 is that it doesn't have a USB port for firmware updates, so this flash will never support wireless zoom control.

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 6 років тому +2

      Thank you for explaining this - much appreciated. I am convinced the TT600 is a bargain. I use an Olympus E-M5 Mark II for dual purposes of capturing real estate and outdoor scenes, so the TT600 will be wonderful if it can receive a signal as far away as the TT685 does (hundreds of feet, easily). I'll typically leave it on 20mm zoom (keep 12mm on the 685) since I like widely dispersed light. If the quality and reliability and build are anything like my TT685, this will make another happy camper for sure! Pretty exciting for a flash. Thanks so much, Sir.

      These are manual flash when on a hotshoe. Look at the bottom of the foot on the flash and you will see a single pin. The single pin means that the only thing happening is that the flash knows when to fire.
      If you want the more advanced features shown in my video you need one of the correct triggers from Godox that communicates specifically with Canon cameras and then wirelessly controls the flash. Those would be the XProC, X2Tc, and X1R-C I believe. bhpho.to/3IIF4ZY

      As long as the flash are on the same channel as your trigger you can use as many flash as you want. To have different power settings for each flash, you assign them to different groups. Of course, there are a limited number of groups but you shouldn't run into that issue.

      They should fire at the same time regardless of what group they are in (unless you have one of the groups disabled). You assign a flash to a group from the flash itself. On the TT600 there is a "Gr" button that you press to cycle through the groups (A, B, C, D, E)

      I had a Godox TTL flash for a short period of time, but after getting the TT600 I sold it. I don't have any opinion on Godox's TTL flash, sorry. The TT600 in this video is completely manual besides getting HSS wirelessly. I personally prefer completely manual flash because there are a large number of factors involved in artificial light photography. When letting the camera/flash control power you are adding a variable to the equation you can't directly control. I do like auto modes in cameras sometimes, but when using flash I think going completely manual is the best route to desired exposures and your art in general. There are a few situations where TTL flash can be helpful. Usually when the situation requires speed. Though there isn't a guarantee you will get proper exposures with even 1st part equipment.

      Make sure the camera is in the FP sync mode (should look something like 1/250* with the astrick. Not 1/250 standard setting). Also, you need a nikon specific Godox trigger like the X1N, XT32N, X Pro N not the XT16 or one made for another brand. It needs to understand the n-ttl data. I don't have Nikon gear anymore so can't give any more details. There should be a high speed sync icon showing on the trigger indicating that is being used.

    Can I use TTL mode on this flash? TT600

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 роки тому +2

      Nope, It has a single hot-shoe pin. It can only be fired in manual mode when on a camera. Wirelessly, with the proper combination of camera and trigger, you can adjust flash power and use high-speed-sync. HSS is technically a TTL mode, but it's a special case. I haven't watched this video in years, but I'd assume I described what is possible. Probably worth (re)watching.

    What size soft box would you recommend for the TT600?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  2 роки тому +1

      I'd think that depends more on what you want to photograph and the look you want. Usually bigger is better. That allows you to be further away while getting softer light or having soft light on larger subjects. The TT600 has a guide number of 60, so the power it can output isn't like the most powerful high-end flash (maybe GN100 for those). I'd suggest trying to find a softbox that can fit two flash heads in the back in case you don't have enough power. Back when I used these I was using umbrellas which are easier to work with (at the cost of having light spill). So I'm not sure with what's available with softboxes that are meant to work with flash. These days I use constant lights, but I do a lot more video than photo indoors. The material the flash has to get through will take 2-4 stops of light away.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому

      I've never used a 750D. Looking at the manual online... You have AF servo mode on in live view? Doesn't your lens have a AF/MF switch on it? Otherwise it looks like the 750D has an "AF" button as part of the d-pad buttons (left middle button). I'd assume that cycles AF mode. You can turn off AF-assist beam in the camera by going into C.Fn Custom Functions #4 to turn that on or off, or if you mean on the TT600 it's with the MF/H button (p18 in the manual). No idea on why the flash wouldn't fire unless you are trying to shoot in a shutterspeed above your camera's "flash sync speed" (eg. some type of auto mode that selects its own shutter speed). Make sure your shutter speed is below 1/180th sec.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому

      S2 is there so you don't need to "cancel preflash". S2 makes the flash fire on the second pulse of light. You will never not have the camera's flash contributing to exposure when using simple slave modes like this. The TT600 needs to be in 'S' mode and the you need to go into the "Fn" menu to enable S2 under the "0S" setting. The camera just needs the flash running as normal (My Canon Rebel SL2 allows me to adjust exposure compensation for flash +- 2 stops, but it will always contribute to the exposure in this case)

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому

      What mode are you using your 750D in? You should only be using M, Av, Tv, or P (I would suggest M only when using external flash). The other modes probably won't work right. I tried "A+" (green icon), CA, and other auto modes my SL2 and it didn't work properly. When triggering external flash, the camera must always be below the camera's sync speed, which is 1/200th second for the SL2 that I have. Make sure you have your camera's built-in flash on in the settings. The camera should automatically limit you to 1/200th sec and slower shutter speeds. Outside of that... I don't know. What I have works as I would expect it to work.

    • @shuvamdatta7511
      @shuvamdatta7511 6 років тому

      Scott Waldron. S2 mode can ignore the canon Focus assist flash firing on the canon camera.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 років тому +1

      There is no way "focus assist" would work on these cameras. Canon uses the built-in flash for "focus assist", which would completely confuse any flash looking for a pulse of light. S2 is meant for "preflash" in TTL systems which is a single pulse of light before the pulse that illuminates the scene. You need to turn "focus assist lamp" off. More expensive cameras have a dedicated "focus assist lamp" that lights up.

    Hey man,
    Does the flash work on mirrorless models like the a7III?
    Kind Regards,
    Alon

      It should. You will want one of the Godox triggers that are for Sony or something like the XT16 trigger that is generic.

      Long press the Zoom|Fn button. In there you cycle through the function options to "OS" and press the "Set" button. Once there you use the dial again to cycle between OFF, S1, and S2.

      No, these are manual flash. But if you buy the correct trigger for your camera brand you will likely be able to use high speed sync.
