    The dedication and love put into raising my very 1st puppy when I was in my early 20’s is one of my proudest achievements. Otto, my gorgeous Doberman, was to serve as my “practice baby” because, at the time, I was conflicted whether or not to have kids. Before bringing Otto home from the breeder, I read 28 dog books cover to cover and hired a PhD animal behaviorist expert to train me (not him!). When Otto was a puppy I exposed him to every scenario under the sun to make sure he would have a calm happy life and make the world a brighter place. We bonded and had lots of fun training together for his CGC test. My mom who never - and I mean NEVER - compliments me, and who is not a pet person, fell in love with him and said: “You will make an excellent mother one day if you do even half the job you did with this wonderful dog.” That’s one of my happiest memories.

      Thanks for the comment! Thats what i needed to hear to gain the selfconfidence to get one of those dogs 🥰 I’m willing to put all of me into training my dog, but I always wondered if that‘s enough. So thanks for sharing that it is enough! I will be a first time owner but had dogs as well as many foster dogs as a child and also kept researching about them since then. So it might work out 🥳

    EXCELLENT advise. I was terrified when my husband suggested a Doberman as first time dog owners! We did our research and learned everything you said before getting our puppy. We did great! Now, we can only see ourselves as Doberman owners...the most awesome breed (and,yes, stubborn)...nothing a good owner can’t handle. If you don’t have it in you to be the”Alpha” and have the time to have fun with your dog, a Doberman is NOT for you. No lazy owner apply.

      the worst Dobie I ever had was simply a chiseler, give him a time out in the corner and 20 minutes later after variety of his maneuvers, he'd be pressed against your calf w his head atop your knee, smiling. Had another one that you had to be careful to not over-correct, very sensitive & lived to please, that would be 2 out of 3. the ! of 3 had a unique set of circumstances = rotating owners and was always testing shifting boundaries.
      Your point = no lazy owner apply absolutely true.

      The whole alpha and dominating your dog is bullshit by the way. It’s been debunked so many times. You do need to be a good and strong leader though but that’s very different than being an alpha

    • @suzannethepatriot8049
      @suzannethepatriot8049 4 роки тому +17

      I think you misunderstand the Alpha thing. You do have to be the one in charge...just like with kids. Otherwise, they will not listen. It is not about beating your dog and being mean. It is about being in charge.

    Our first dog was a Doberman and she was the most well behaved dog I’ve ever seen in my life! I was little when we had her, so my father did the training. He was extremely diligent in her training and she was the most obedient dog I’ve ever seen. We could even have her off leash. I solely base how great our experience was with how my father trained her, as well as her breeding. I would love another Dobe someday!

      The most well behaved dog how did you do it? My doberman Mocha Chip Mayberry (first name Mocha) is not well behaved. She knows her commands she is sneaky. She waits until we go to sleep to get on the couch. She hears me call her name and I tell her Mocha get off the couch she looks at me and stares me in my eyes and ignores me. So I have to nudge her in the butt with my foot to get her to move. She sneaks to the trash. She sneaks to drink out of the toilet. She is too smart for her own good! She has been told 100 times but she is stubborn. She's not a full year yet though. On a positive note she is the most friendly dog I've ever met. She was very well socialized. She doesn't nip at all. But she is a pain in the ass she won't let me go anywhere without following me and sniffing my butt. This is my first dog ever and I'm use to cats. She's basically another child. A big muscley child.

    I've wanted a Doberman ever since I was a kid and saw a movie on TV called "The Doberman Gang". We didn't get one because my dad believed they were bad dogs because they were used by the Germans in WW2, so they were regarded as "vicious". Then in the 80s, there were 2 on the TV show "Magnum P.I." which made me want one (and a Ferrari 308) even more. I finally got one in Oct. 2019. He was 11 months old at the time. We play Hide and Seek in the house but he already knows all my hiding spots. I'll hide treats all over and tell him "Find it" and he goes searching for them. Out on walks, he loves meeting people and other dogs. Only problem sometimes is, people with smaller dogs (ankle biters mostly) see us coming and they head the other way or cross the street to avoid us. I guess they shared my father's mentality. It makes me feel bad for both dogs because they obviously want to meet.

    • @michaeltomlinson7245
      @michaeltomlinson7245 4 роки тому +2

      Yeah Joe R, I know what you mean about Magnum (Dobes and the 308!). Also know what you mean about other people with dogs. Like you said, the dogs want to meet but their owners don't because the other dog is a Dobe. One woman near us (no names mentioned) has two smaller dogs; both are brilliant and would love to run with our Coco, but this woman will not let them near us. She actually told me that 'dogs like that should not be allowed'. I thought better of telling her to **** off, and just walked away. Some people are just too far gone, too set in their ways. But we live with it, because we're better than that and we love those Dobes don't we ! Oh YEAH !! (Got a Choc Lab and a JRT too, so love all dogs).

      It was the United States that used dobermans in WWll. They were the mascot of the Marines. Check out the War dog memorial in Guam. You'll see.
      If you look at WWll German footage I challenge you to find a single doberman in any of their films. In fact, it was the United States who received the best of what was left of the german dogs. Check out Illena and the Seven Sires.
      The North American Standard most closely resembles the original doberman.
      "Proud, of noble carriage, poured into the skin". A doberman is meant to be an extremely agile creature. Bigger is not conducive to agility.
      And since I'm here keep your dog away from strange dogs, especially smaller dogs as if anything goes awry, the doberman is going to get the blame.

      I did not let my dogs sniff other dogs on walks as the dogs can infect your dog with parasites fleas ticks etc plus they can snap or bite your dog causing eye injuries or can tear your dogs ear causing a big vet bill and causing it to drop permanently. 45 yrs dobe experience. i took my dog to the dobe breeder for dog friend playtime.

    Great video! I have a 20 month old Doberman, and he is the first dog I've ever owned. My husband had dogs before, but they were never really trained, so needless to say it really didn't matter that he had dogs previously. My dog constantly gets compliments on his good demeanor and behavior, and that is because I put in the time and energy to train him from day 1. If you are willing to do the work, a doberman can be a great first dog! I would also add to what you said in the video, that I do think certain types of people in general do better than others with dobermans. You cannot be afraid to correct them and then show them the proper behavior. You must be willing to speak to them sternly when they misbehave, because otherwise they won't listen to you. People that aren't interested in correcting bad behavior and training their dog, should not get a doberman as a first, second, or twentieth dog. But if you have the will and commitment to do the training work, you will do just fine even if it is your first dog.

    You're hands down my favorite UA-camr. Thank you, for the great advice for first-time owners! Considering that I soon will be an owner to a Doberman! But my family's main concern is that we don't have a fenced-in yard does anyone have any suggestions?

      Doberman isnt going to go hang out in the yard unless your out there(if you put them out there, they will sit and whine by the door until you let them in)....If your out there, do you need a fence?

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much Cameron, that just means so much to hear. I will do my best not to let you down! I'm really glad you got something useful from the video. Not having a fence is tough. You could build a nice large dog run of sorts if you are able to (if you have an HOA make sure they allow it), or as Barry said, just be with them all the time when you're out there. But if it's a major safety concern for your pup, then there are wireless electronic fences as a fail safe also but they aren't perfect and a lot of people don't like that idea either.
      The good news is that these dogs just want to be with you all the time anyway. So if it were me I would really consider building a dog run just for in-frequent and short term use when needed, but mostly just keep them in the house with me or outside only when I'm there with them.

    • @suzannethepatriot8049

      We have an electronic fence. Dobes will mostly stay with you but there is always that chance that something gets their attention and they will run after it (ie deer)

    I got my girl after about a year of wanting a dog, alway had dogs growing up and wanted my own. That first year was rough, she was dominant and nippy all the time. But she was also the most loving and sweet dog id ever met. Once I improved my training skill and applied them to her she calmed down massively and now only nips when you encourage her (playfully) and she knows no means exactly that, she does still enjoy it though and she's two and a half. Also we noticed once she had her first period about age one she calmed down a lot. Now she's honestly the most amazing dog ever, she loves cuddles and get into bed with you under the covers with her head on the pillow 😂. She's also naturally protective but not aggressively so, once I took her a walk at 1 in the morning as I couldn't sleep and I was being followed by two thugs on a big field, you couldn't see the dog as she was running round. She must have spotted them following me as she then started running round me getting closer until they were about 5 meters away then she jumps between me and them and barks and growls like a beast, she even scared me a bit, and they ran away. That was just plain natural instinct and god know what would have happened if she hadn't been there, she could have save my life. Lovely dogs once they mature.

    I have an amazing 6 and a half year old 120lb German Rottweiler that I’ve had since he was 8 weeks old. My brother has been looking for a good “European” Doberman breeder forever now, and he found one recently. He put a deposit on a male himself. I decided to go look at the puppies yesterday and put a deposit on a female. Been watching your videos for advice. She won’t be ready till late in July, but I’m very excited. Hoping she won’t be a far stretch away from how it was raising my Rottweiler.

    Such good advice! I wish more people would do some research on the breed they want before jumping in. I thought long and hard (about a year) before getting a Jack Russell. Another breed I feel is not for first time dog owners. I actually ended up with my puppy's sister. The lady that bought her decided at 7 mos old this dog wasn't for her. She was disappointed that her beautiful puppy wasn't like the ones on TV. The breeder called me because he knew I wanted to get a second dog. Luckily the two got along and I had them both for 14 years before they passed on. I have always loved Dobermans so here I am, thinking long and hard about getting one! Thank you for this video.

    Good presentation, on point with socialization and heirachy. .My first doberman was a foundling abandoned puppy, emaciated and starved. She never got over starvation for her life, very food focused. She also lacked confidence. We took her in, I had the idea dobies were troublesome but we would find her a home or its owner. We did find both, my dad and I took on the job. Within a week we loved the dog. Went to dog classes for socialization, obedience to sit and stay, University to meet lots of people, 3-4 year old nephews and neices doing sit and stay heel to understand she is not setting the heirarchy. I was amazed how fast she learned, how affectionate and a treat to be with. She never got over food nor abandonment as she was somewhat stressed when I left to school. 20 years and 5 dobies later stll my breed of choice.

People who barely knew me would see us together and say "wow that dog really loves you". I got that several times, was weird. But IMO the best dog in the world. I've had 3 and planning to get a fourth but has taken years to get over my last girl, had her for 13 years. Broke my heart when the time came and she left.

    John, thanks a lot for doing this video trying to break the bad stigma of Dobermans for first time owners. I've seen many other types of breeds and mix bred dogs so badly behaving because of poor or complete lack of training from the owners. It's not about the breed, it's about the owners. As responsible dog owners we should all put the time to train them and make them successful in the human world. No bad dogs!

Also, I know how much you stress socialization but due to the stigma of dobermans being vicious, it's not easy to get people to socialize with them, or be willing to come into your home, once they are no longer cute little puppies.

    Good job man, Arlo is looking fantastic. I say it every time, but he really is absolutely adorable. My female Frieda is 3 now. I can remember that for her the 6 month until about 10 month window was very difficult. Her energy level started to really ramp up and her interest in the environment vs interest in me started to really polarize. This was a tough time for me to deal with, especially when taking her out for a daily walks. She just wanted to play play play. We got through it and she still is a real "player". This was the most difficult period for me to get through with her...

    21 year old college student, got my first dog and he is a Doberman. It’s nothing different than raising any other puppy. It is almost easier because of how smart they are. If you form a close bond, make sure he gets proper exercise (my 4 month old runs 2-3 times a day) and make sure they’re well socialized and meet lots of people. I try to take any little thing as a point to train, and my guy kashi is growing into an awesome dog. I’m not sure if it’s normal with my pup, but he loooooves nipping so make sure there’s plenty chew and tug toys.
