  • Here's how to prevent aggression in your Doberman before it starts. These 7 training techniques will help ensure that your Doberman puppy grows up to be a kind, loving, and tolerant Doberman. If you want an adult Doberman who is gentle and kind with your kids with zero aggression or biting issues, here's how to do it! In this video, we'll talk about preventing resource guarding, fear biting, and aggression. You'll build a tolerance to touch, reduce reactivity, and help your Doberman to become a calm and predictable dog. Start your Doberman off right by doing these things at a young age and you'll have a DREAM of an adult Doberman.

I 100% agree with all of this. I watched John's videos about 6 months before I got my American dobermam in 2021, and followed these guidelines. They really do work, my dobie Prince is the most trustworthy dog I have ever had. One thing I thought John would mention here is to implement the threshold boundaries. He had those in a different video, but doing the threshold boundaries really helps with respecting the given pecking order in the home, especially around my small children.
    Great video John!

    • @DobermanPlanet

Thanks so much, Johanna! The threshold boundaries do help the owner establish their role as the alpha, which is certainly very helpful! I talk about it in this video if you (or anyone else) are interested: ua-cam.com/video/k8DcWNbrhqQ/v-deo.html. Thank you for pointing that out and for taking the time to comment!

My Doberman was a sweetheart with my twin babies which are now 18 yrs. Doberman Stryder is long gone sadly, but they still love the breed and grew up with them. They are soooo good with babies. As long as you don’t separate them from baby and let them lick the baby, they will be a gentle, sweet, and loving protector. My kids literally learned to walk hanging onto their Doberman. The amount of patience and love I saw in this dog toward my babies always beautiful. He would even crawl around them because he knew how big he was and didn’t want to accidentally hurt them.
Of course, as the babies grow, it’s important that you teach the kids to be gentle with the dog!!

Our beautiful sweet five year old Doberman was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the beginning of December, right after Thanksgiving. We were having a great day, and out of nowhere he got up and was limping. I thought maybe he somehow injured a ligament, even though I could see how, because we were together the whole day… We took him to the vet first thing that following Monday. They took some radiographs and it turned out to be OSA. The lungs appeared clear on the rads but with OSA, 90% of the time there has already been Micrometastesis. We decided to move forward with amputation. The biopsy taken says that vascular/lymph invasion was NOT SEEN. I am hoping and praying that means that we were able to act in time, and that he will be able to live a long healthy normal rest of his life. I just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else encounters this problem in the future. If your Doberman is limping for seemingly no known reason, it could, unfortunately be OSA or perhaps an ACL/CCL tear. (Both are extremely painful) Osteosarcoma is extremely painful in the affected limb and is extremely aggressive, which is why we elected amputation, but there is still a chance they can make it. As it seems our boy may miraculously be able to. Please send a prayer his way. 🙏🏻 ❤ For anyone facing amputation, make SURE you have post surgical care arranged post surgery. Do not try to manage at home. Our boy was in post op care for three days. And he NEEDED to be there for those three days. You might feel like you made the wrong decision, at first, but I promise that you will be grateful that you made the decision at the 2.5-3 week mark when they are feeling themselves again, happy, free from the previously painful limb, and getting back to their favourite activities again. “Tripawds” is also an incredible resource! Sorry for the long comment… I just want to put this out there for anyone else dealing with this. ❤

My husband and I rescued our Doberman that has been re-homed 3 times already, before us, at the age of 5 months old. She has had horrible past experiences with owners, treated as an outside dog and had her fight with other dogs, and now that it has almost been a week since we've had her and created a safe space for her, she is showing MAJOR territorial aggression. She is so sweet to us, but the second there is a stranger near us, whether it is our family member in our home, or a dog in another home trying to be near us, she will growl and bark. We are getting her into professional training with an intense trainer that works with dominant breeds. What are some of the best things we can do as her 4th owner at 5 months? She is already dominant and territorial because of her past.

The Hand-In-the-Bowl conditioning method is great, and I tried it many many years ago. We did not take it to the level you described, but instead I did this maybe once or twice per week, irregularly. Dog never was disturbed when hand went between food in bowl and dog. NEVER any problem.

Hi John, great advice as always! I have followed a great deal of these tips from your previous videos. Luna is doing great. My biggest issue is making sure my family do the same things. Luna is lovely with me, but can get really mischievous with my wife and kids. What is the best thing to do? Intervene or make sure they keep following through with the same training tips and commands?
    Keep up the great work!

Awesome video! Yes, socialization, especially at a young age, is key! I would also add touching the dog's hind end and tail, as well as hugging, both from above and in front, like a kid would do. I used to be an evaluator for TDI and the Delta Society years ago. Had a red Dobe that I was just about to pass, when I decided to do a frontal hug. It freaked her out. Told the owners to come back after working on that using positive reinforcement and they s/be golden. With the food dish, I do more and better treats, so they're thinking where's my treat, rather than I'm going to nail you. I tell my students to get their dogs used to wearing a muzzle too. Even if your dog is wonderful, especially if you travel with your dog. If anything bad happens, the first thing a vet will do is put a muzzle on your dog, so why freak them out twice - once with the muzzle, and once with whatever the vet has to do to them. The muzzle has also helped increase the confidence in my fearful, more reactive dog. Hope that helps.

I’ll have had my Boba for a year come Feb10th (brought him home at 8mo from a pandemic puppy situation) and this advice is invaluable!
My dude went from highly dog+car+kid reactive on/off leash, to a dog the neighbourhood kids will cross the street to greet - and who has a fantastic pack of buddies to romp with.
That “pick on me” training is a godsend; Boba just loves it 😅 now he thinks getting his face and ears smooshed is the best cuddle ever.

@@DobermanPlanet honestly, I credit a LOT of it to you! Watching Doberman Planet prior to bringing Bo home was a masterclass in prep, so thanks for giving me the confidence to power through the raptor stage, and the rehoming anxiety, and get to this “my god he’s a good boy” stage.
And, since I write novels in the comments anyways: Boba’s best friend is a little lady dobe, and while they were romping her owner and I got to chatting about socialization. Out of the blue, he turns to me and says, “have you heard of Doberman Planet? *He* says-“.
So cheers from your Canuck fan club, I guess! There’s at least two very good dobes out there courtesy of your hard work here!

Hi! Question! Were you ever wary of having your kid's friends around when they were young?

    • @oldgrayhairs8246
      @oldgrayhairs8246 Рік тому

@@kimreed273 Good question. No, not at all. Our boys were young and our Doberman was a puppy, so everyone grew up together. That included our boys friends from the neighborhood. Everyone had dogs, ours was just a Doberman. Our puppy just wanted to play. It was the socialization idea for dogs and kids. It's a little tougher for older dogs but I believe that once any dog meets you repeatedly, they know who you are and they know you're a friendly person and they're happy to see you. Plus, I always have small easy to chew treats for the dogs, which of course makes them remember you and it works for training too. Small easy to chew treats because some of the dogs are small and some are older and smaller easy to chew treats works for all dogs. I don't want them to ever choke on a treat. I hope that helped.

Good video. Up until yesterday, I thought my boy was pretty chill around other dogs. However, we were at the groomers/dog store, and while I was letting him visit with a woman's lab he started a little head's up growling and nipping/mouthing. Nothing too serious, but I had to immediately yank on his lead, tell him no, and run him outside to the truck. So, I'm going to have to watch a little more when he's around strange dogs. He's a rescue that I got when he was about 1 and 1/2 yrs. old. Very sweet, intelligent, and loyal. But, he does like to rough house still at 2 and 1/2 yrs. old.

When you go to pick out your dog, the people on staff at the center will be able to tell you about the dog's demeanor, how he or she interacts with others adults and dogs, and may have some insight about the Doberman's past as well (previous owners, reason for surrender, health records...). Hopefully this gives you some more confidence to move forward to with a rescue! Please message on Facebook if you need anything!

Having done animal rescue and shelter work the truth is previous owners lie a lot and you will 99% of the time get zero vet history outside of what the shelter did. Get a physical asap. Rescuers are the ones who will have the best history on the dogs previous condition and they are not always shelter staff so try to talk to them. Shelter staff will never be able to tell you anything useful because they are 90% of the time volunteer so do not spend more than a hour or two a day at the shelter. Not one person on the planet can have a relationship to know the truth about a single dog when they only have one or two hours a day to split amongst dozens of animals. Behavior inside the shelter is NEVER the same as it will be at home. Do not expect it to be. Consult a professional train with experience in abuse and neglect. The dog will be nervous at first let them get comfortable while enforcing boundaries you have previously decided on. Build trust first then reintroduce them to the world. Can you handle a large potentially traumatized dog? If not do not get a dog who displays fearful behavior inside the play room at the shelter. Dogs who are reactive, barking, and jumping in the kennels are just as likely to calm down at home as the dogs who are scared in the kennels. Shelters are loud, scary, and everything dogs hate. Behavior inside the play room is your best indicator of what you are getting and its not a good indicator because of the stress the dog is under. Be prepared to hire that trainer to help you manage any reactions or triggers. You may have to send the dog to stay with the trainer for a few weeks so they can really worknout serious issues. Dogs are more likely to bite out of fear than anything else. I have the scars to prove it. Now after all that I've had more owner surrender small dogs attack me while I was sitting on the ground not moving or looking at them than dogs pulled out of dog fighting rings. I've actually never been bitten by a Doberman who was rescued from a dog fighting ring. With food aggressive older dogs the best way to treat it is hand feeding if you feel safe or sitting and not once looking at them while they are eating (resource aggressive dogs will view eyeing them or their food while they eat as a challenge and that makes the food aggression worse).

Great video as always. I have a question though that is unrelated but was sparked by the intro. I noticed in the 4th clip of the 'aggressive' examples in the intro there is a red with what looks like the lower canine teeth filed down. Our red male rescue (we adopted him at around 2 years old) has lower canines that look just like this. The top ones also look like they've been filed down. There's not an aggressive bone in his body (except to his jolly ball). Any thoughts on this, or is it there something with reds that cause their teeth to wear more than the blacks?

My doberman puppies are never a resource guarder towards humans, but only towards fellow dogs; I can freely touch them anywhere in their bodies while eating, I can sit closely when feeding, I can even take "toys" (basically, things they should not really play with) without getting grumpy, and all (I bet the breeder done these too even before we purchased the dog; he told us that he trained the puppies to not bite when touching). Except, the resource guarding between dogs; I think it is because there is a huge competition between littermates before being rehomed which may affect how they perceived fellow dogs as a threat. I searched the internet about how to mitigate such, but I cannot find a way that befits my situation as of now; do you have any recommendations, good Sir?

Hello. I love the videos. They have been tremendously helpful in raising my first dobie. I have a question unrelated to aggression. I can't find any solid information about this but, I have a red doberman who has blue eyes. Not cloudy blue or dark, they're ice blue. Think about a husky's eyes. He gets a lot of compliments and yes he's pretty. But do you know anything about this? Are there dobies with blue eyes? I know about white dogs having them but what about in red dobies? What genetics tests would you recommend to make sure it's not an indication of something negative?

Hi, Ranay! That is so cool and have never heard or seen a red Doberman having icy blue eyes! No doubt that you get a lot of comments and compliments about him. We'd love to see a photo! If you'd like to share, you can upload a picture to www.dobermanplanet.com/contribute.
Embark tests for some risk factors for PRA which is common in Dobermans. (Progressive Retinal Atrophy): ua-cam.com/video/C2y_P3L8Hkw/v-deo.html. That is the link where we talk about testing and the kit. It still might be good to talk to a vet since there's so much non-genetic things that can be going on too. Or he could just have beautiful blue eyes!

We adopted an eight week old American European mix yesterday from a backyard breeder. She is showing some behavior that is a bit concerning she seems to have some food aggression she growled when I did the hand in the bowl 🥺 I just kept at so was ok after a bit but once my female American doberman walked up she started parking and growling at her. She also seems to get scared easily but what's odd is she runs towards the noise, person, etc...barking and growling I'm feeling like I bit off more than I can chew with this one. We have a 2 1/2 year old American doberman that is completely wonderful and loving with no issues which is what made us want to get another. Any advice?

my dad got his first dobie last year, ruby is now 15 months old. she has had basic training with a group and did well. she is not aggressive in any way and has blossomed into a very loving affectionate girl with an overload of personality. now, while she is not aggressive she does tend to be a bit rough in her approaches to get attention and affection. no one in the family has ever played with her in a rough manner because we did not want to normalize that kind of behavior. do you have any suggestions as to how to get her to understand that rough affection is not what we want? btw, she does not play rough at all. it is only when she decides that she wants to be affectionate towards us and attempts to hug us and/or give us what we call nibble kisses. we don't want our trying to correct this behavior to be misinterpreted and have her become distant with her affection. she just needs to learn to calm it down a bit. any ideas? will understand if you don't read this or don't respond as i am sure that you get many people with questions. love the channel and have shared with my dad as ruby is his first dobie. (i have had many dobies in my life [and i am an old fart now] and all of them lived to 14 or more years so i was blessed.)

John, why did you decide to neuter Arlo? Just curious. I planned on neutering my guy at 2 yrs. He's now 3 and no aggression in sight. My vet says I can leave him intact for now. I know the intact males can develop some prostate issues later in life. So I'll take it day by day.

If I were to fix, it would be until he’s 2 years. May I ask how you dealt with the puppy biting? Mines gets intense with play biting. Redirecting rarely works

True winter story from NJ, USA for you. One winter (maybe 1980/81) the temperature was around 8 degrees F. with about 4 inches of snow on the ground. I let our American Doberman, black & rust, (about 65 lbs) out the back door to do her business. She walked about 30 feet from the house, did her business, took a couple of steps, and laid down in the snow, turned her head towards me, and just stared over at me. No bark or whine. No sound from from her at all. I knew what it meant. It meant she was freezing and couldn't make it back to the door. I immediately went out to her, picked her up, took her inside, and the two of us laid down on the couch with a blanket over us until she warmed up. Thank God I was watching her. After that incident, we always watched her closely or went out with her in the cold NJ winters when she went out to do her business. I don't remember her having any problems like that when the weather was in the 20's degrees F. in NJ. Maybe a coat for her would have helped and maybe boots on her feet but the really cold weather was unusual for NJ. I hope that helped you answer your question about Dobermans in cold weather. She was only out in our back yard for a couple of minutes. I can still see the look on her face. She said, "Help me!" Loved that Doberman! Stay well my friend.

Would love a doberman though want to wait until one of my current dogs are gone (I'm not trying to kill them off, I love them!) But am very intrigued by this breed and want to do research ahead of time. Does anyone have experience with dobermans and their kids' friends coming over? I have young boys and we alway have friends over, I'm not worried about a doberman with my own kids but will they be protective of them when other children come around? I've already had friends say, "If you get a doberman, I'm not sure I feel comforable bringing my kids over..." Is this dramatic?

Does anyone's Doberman gram some kibble, walk away from their food bowl, stop and drop the kibble then start to eat from the little pile of kibble they just made? Mine does this. She will walk about 15 yards away from her food bowl and eat there.

in my opinion, the first most importance is the stock: European/American/Shutzhund/East German stock...for the most part, American dobes are bred soft in my opinion and not the original heritage of the German dobe...European dobes have a high prey/protection drive...

Although I need a good watch dog with lots of natural energy. I’m really studying this spayed and neutering thing but I still feel that leaving them intact is better.

My Doberman recently started growling at me, he used to be a very sweet loving dog, a Doberman breeder told me to hit my dog if he growls at me and shows his teeth. I am desperate as I have a 8 month old baby, so the next time he growled at me I did hit him, this was the first time I properly hit him and I only hit him once. I really regret doing so as after that he showed a complete personality change and the growling changed to fear biting. this all happened a week ago and I am really desperate because I do love him and don't want to let him go or put him down. We did socialize him, touched all over, hand in the bowl, positive reinforcement, however, exercise has been difficult as they closed off the filed we used to take him for walks, he does not do well with other dogs thus we have no control over him when we go for walks in the neighbourhood as everyone has dogs and then he loses it. Is it to late for me do change this behaviour or do you maybe please have some advice for me, because I really do like him.

There are some facts- evidences that castration can actually increase the risk of osteosarcoma, a very dangerous, malignant cancer which often kills dogs. There is also evidence that it increases the risk of hypothyroidism- (This is not a life threatening condition but does require life-long treatment).
Secondly, have to be abnormal person to castrate a dog without a reason and medical indications of a veterinarian in the most extreme cases. I would suggest neutering such owners who did this to their dog for no reason..

  • @Brian_Leca
    @Brian_Leca Рік тому

I've did this with Leca and she truly is a lover. Btw, I still touch her all over "I did the touching exercise, so the veterinarians never have to worry about anything weird happening.
Only thing I do not to believe is true #4. Spay/neuter does not help with aggression or dominance.

I don't believe in castrating dogs, particularly as puppies. I have found that castration or spaying at a young age results in health issues in later life, as well as inhibiting physical development. Our 3 yo mixed breed got his vasectomy at about 6 months. While he knows full well that he's a boy, his nurture has been such that he just loves people and other dogs. On rare occasions he will attempt to mount but has been trained that it is unacceptable behavior.

Stop mutilating the poor dogs. Why would you want to crop the years and cut the tail? Are you fearing that you doberman will meet a wolf and having years would be a disadvantage in the fight? Or are you trying to make him look scarier to the burglars? Not talking of cut the dog's balls.
