I have always owned German Shepherd dogs. I would’ve never thought in a million years I would be sitting here watching your videos right next to my five year old male rescue Doberman. He is the most easy-going dog I have ever met in my life. I did not have small children, but if I did, I would not have any issues whatsoever allowing this dog around my children. He is a Velcro dog and I’ve never had a dog that really and truly wanted to be around me as much as he does. Unlike my German shepherds, he is a dream come true on a leash. He is so unfazed by any passing dogs or animals. He walks so proudly on the leash with his head held high. He is so chill, and I absolutely cannot believe anyone would abandon this amazing dog. I’m so blessed he came into my life. Seriously, I can’t believe he’s my dog!

Having raised Doberman puppies all my life, last year I adopted an adult male from a Doberman rescue. It was a no brainer for me, because I've slowed down and no longer have the farm and the acreage for a puppy to grow up with, and getting a 6+ year old was great for me. Because I'm very familiar with the breed, the medical issues he came with were not a deterrent as I've dealt with them before. One of the things you mentioned about not knowing the history is spot on. I discovered my dog doesn't like large groups of people, and he wants to make snacks out of little dogs, but he's great with my indoor cats. You really will find out things like this on your own usually, after you leave the shelter, so be prepared. Other than that, I won't be purchasing puppies to raise anymore. I will give a good home to seniors who like living with seniors now. 😀

I got a Doberman, too, after we lost our two old dogs. Said I'd never get another dog, but when I saw a red Dobie's picture online, I had to rush to the Humane society to grab my 11-year-old male, whom we named Chance because he gave us another chance as dog-owners, and we gave him a chance. He had been grossly neglected and was quite skittish. He's three now. I have a 55-pound lap dog!

I have a fawn and rust. I would probably have chosen a black and red, but my boy was sort of a rescue from being tied to a tree. He was 6 months when I got him. Turned 1 on January 6. Best decision I've ever made. I wasn't looking for a dog when I ended up with him. I didn't realize how much I needed him. He's been velcroed to me since I saved him.

The most important thing I now consider when thinking about getting another doberman is health. I can adapt to higher energy, either sex etc. My next dobe will be a male American/European mix that is show quality. Black and Rust appeals the most to me. Unless my female expires before my male. I'll always have 2 opposite sex. Until the day I die no matter my age. When I get too old to train I'll go the adult adoption route. My first one was 16 months old rescue. He was fabulous!! Ohhhh but the joy of raising that pup is work that made my bond deeper than theirs I'm sure.

Our first Doberman was an American show/pet. She was very reserved and calm. She did have the Doberman protection. There were several occasions where she went into DobieMode, as we called, she saved me from a stranger who came to our door and wanted to come in. She was having nothing to do with the guy even getting on the porch! I was so glad to have her. She was 14 when she passed. We currently have a 2 year old European male working dog. He is so full of energy and wants to play 24/7. People often ask which we preferred, all I can say they both are Dobermans with their own personalities.

My doberman Heidi is an American female. Her and I have a strong bond with each other. She came to our ranch a year ago and she was in bad shape. She didn't trust nobody because she was seriously abused by her previous owner and it took me two weeks to earn her trust. But now she's just a big baby. And a house dog to boot.

I have been a foster home for our local doberman rescue group for 25 years. I love the effort you put into this video! Have been blessed to foster and "foster fail" with several dobes from both American and European lines, you have done great research identifying valid points of consideration. One of my biggest frustrations with potential adopters is their unwillingness to do thorough research before deciding to adopt. • @vleavy

Good video. I’ve had them since the 70’s. I’ve always had black and rust because of health issues that can go with having diluted colors. Back in the day I don’t remember even seeing reds and definitely not the others. Something you don’t bring up is eye color. Darker colored eyes, almost black, used to be the standard and indicated less dilution. I’ve had American, Euro, male, female, working, show, AKC pup and rescues and I think you’ve pretty much nailed that. The only thing I’d add is that the working dogs or Euros are really fearless. They are not as likely to be concerned with lightning, loud noises or fireworks. I’m an older adult. When I am needing another dog, I’ll likely get a rescue dog, female, American or Euro because I’ll get to meet them first and know what I’m getting. Females seem to be slightly more calm and the females we’ve had are definitely more attached to one person. Our large, intact, euro male can be trusted with all kids and even though he’s intact, he gets along with almost all dogs. Definitely more playful and has tons of energy. That said, we live in a farm so they all get tons of exercise. Just want to add that Dobermans didn’t used to have all the health issues they do today. I’ve been lucky, so far, and no Doberman related health issues. It may be their color plays a role, or exercise, or diet. And maybe just luck.
    Thanks for all the videos!

He has the drive and trainability of a Euro and the passiveness and want to lounge of an American. His need for exercise comes in bursts, but wants he’s done, he’s done lol. Which works for me! At only 4 months, he’s the best dog I’ve ever had. He has my heart.

She had lots of skin issues the older she got. Hair loss and lots of skin tags/wart like growths. Also her skin was always very oily. She wasn't itchy and I don't think the issues bothered her, but they weren't the prettiest thing. I talked to so many vets about it and noone seemed to know why or what to do about it. We had the European Red/Blue Dobie boy but he passed last year in June at 12.5 yrs old from heart issues. We adopted him at 7 yrs old and with skin issues and we took care both his heart and skin issues and his skin got healed but his heart was the reasoned he passed at 12.5yrs old. Now we just adopted another European Dobie girl she's black & tan an AKC Certified working protection blood line dad and she's 1.8 yrs old. They have similarities in behavior with the red blue Dobie boy we had but also as your video said she's not as accepting right away with people than the boy Dobie. Well John this a wonderful video to support newbies to the Doberman breed. When it comes to choose working line vs pet/show line Dobermans you did not mention a specific characteristic with working line Dobermans. They not only have more drive and need more exercise or oppertunities for workout. What is really hard: they are 24/7 on guard, significantly more than pet or show line Dobermans. These Dobermans check and sense everything, everywhere and constantly. And if you not be aware of them they make their own decisions which are based on their breeding prupose being a personal guard dog.
So when you leave your homestead, property or flat you have to have a closer look on your dog. Working line Dobermans doing their job constantly, but you have to do your job as well - to supervise the dog in the same way. Believe me that's gona be hard sometimes.

My first Doberman was a male black&rust European one; the best dog I’ve ever had❣️🥰 Energetic but relaxed and peaceful and very sweet, ‘velcro’ and protective of me. The female black&rust European is something else…very smart, energetic and athletic and superprotective of me and the house but not as cuddly and relaxed as the male one. She learns very fast but also has more a will of her own, she’s a dominant creature but respects what you want from her. To my opinion it’s very important to be consequent in what is allowed and what is not, especially with dogs like Doberman’s. She’s a great dog to travel with because she loves to be in the car, as long as she can accompany me she’ll go anywhere 😁

We are planning to get our first Doberman in about one year. We would choose what you chose. Why? Well, we are in our mid sixties and have always had dog, but truly it would also help us to be more active and have a loving companion. ❤

I had a blue female. Her coat was a beautiful purple/grey hue when she was a pup. As she aged, her coated thinned and had a lot of skin issues. I now have a 4 year old female black and rust that has a beautiful coat and no skin issues.

Great video, John! I think you made a lot of good points to help people choose the right Doberman for their lifestyle. I've had European Dobermans and an American European Hybrid in the past. Currently, I own a 2.5 years old black & rust male European working line Doberman. He is an amazing dog, but only because I put the work in (and still do every day). Very high drive, and he needs his 2-4 hours training and exercise every day. If, for whatever reason, it might be a little less, you immediately know it😅. We are training for IGP titles.

Great video. We currently have a black and rust female and a red and rust male (both American), but I would love to have another fawn male. We have had two in the past and they were both such awesome and gorgeous dogs, but were often mistaken for Weimeriners when we took them out in public.

One thing i can say and i think Doberman planet but I agree, if your interested in getting a puppy. Make sure to get it from at AKC breeder with good merit and health line. Just cause a breeder has papers doesn't mean it's a good breeder blood line.

My choice is similar to use. My experience with male and female Dobermans is a little different than what you described. As you mention every Doberman is unique. My female, Ember, is very friendly and doesn’t know a stranger, while my male is more reserved and watches. He is friendly once he gets to know you.

Really look forward to your videos to read. My first Dobey must’ve been a European type and was 146 lbs. and very nimble as she went straight up a ladder step to ride with my dad in the tractor any time all day. Our other Dobeys were American being more sleek and smaller and black and rust up until two years ago and males. Now I have Tootsie who is red and rust female who I feel is more playful but is more willing to use her mouth to keep an upper hand in play. She also is more caring of an owner in she notices any new thing that wasn’t around prior and check it out in minutes. If you have a cut or scab she will be your nurse checking it out ,licking it, trying to remove the scab anything to get it to normal. She also has more drive to play oftener, be more willing to protect but not get into a fight and more like a cat as when you told her no she will rub her whole body on your leg as if to say I’m sorry I love you. 😊All my Dobeys made believers out of you when you came home in the pitch dark and put up a fit until they heard your voice to identify you and stop barking. You had to assure them you belonged there which I really appreciated about them. A very protective breed of children as I’ve seen parents scold a child for discipline and the dog give the grown up a little growl barely able to hear.❤

My current one is out of American show lines. One of his sisters was the national Dobe puppy of the year 2022 and is now a grand champion. My guy's handler gave up after ten show because he has the personality of a Golden Retriever and just wanted to make friends with the judge and other handlers. My previous one was European and was scary smart. My wife and I had to spell in front of him or he'd be guarding the front door if we said "pizza" or "UPS." He memorized every TV commercial that had a dog in it and would be glued to the screen after a couple of notes of music.

My choice is the same as John's other than being European rather than American. American might have been better, but they aren't immensely available where I live. Found an amazing breeder of showdogs (his throphy shelf is insane!) and met a few adult donermans who are related to my soon to be puppy and they were amazing, so I'm pretty pleased with my European pick 😊

I've had two black and rust males. The first passed away at six years old due to DCM (he was also a newspaper ad puppy / questionable bloodlines). The next one I had was from a fantastic breeder specializing in European Pride of Russia lines. Unfortunately, I had to leave him behind during a divorce. (I did end up fleeing with my Malinois tho). Long story. So, heartbroken, I never thought I'd have another doberman.
Then serendipitously this Spring, the same breeder reached out to me with a red and rust female pup that was the last remaining in that litter. I hadn't talked to her in years.
I couldn't resist. So to recap: two black and rust males and one red and rust female all from European working lines. I also have a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. Don't worry, I have a pet vacuum - and big yard. :-) Love your channel.
