Underrrated? By what fool? Hell I use that at least once a month in One Piece discussions. It's one of the greatest one word responses in cinema history.
@@3Rayfire it literally puzzles me when people say this movie is underrated. This first one is my fav movie and believe me.... it is in no shape or form underrated. The only reason it isn’t higher than endgame for box office is because of the year it was released... consider the fact that people didn’t go theater often back then and yet still it was so high.... honestly this movie is a masterpiece.... I don’t think I’d get up and genuinely watch a pirate movie but this has definitely left a mark.

The issue is Disney thinks they have a Pirates of the Caribbean franchise when in reality they have a Captain Jack Sparrow franchise. Oh snap, got a heart from the great man himself. My life is complete.
@@ragreenburg It’s rough, but if you cling to the fact that even if it’s gone, you still made a comment good enough to warrant a heart, it doesn’t sting as much.
Thats only part though ... he can only shine because of the stellar cast he can play off of. Geoffrey Rush is fucking amazing in this movie and my personal favorite ... but all the others are fucking great too. What tainted Jack Sparrow in the long run is not quitting after movie 3.
I'm pretty sure Filmento will bring up the Pirates and Captain Jack in upcoming videos whenever there's the slightest reason to do so. And it will be awesome. This man simply knows how to back up a point and hammer it home effectively.
Disney is trying SO hard to erase Johnny Depp's good name and replace him with another generic pirate reboot. Truth is, Jack Sparrow IS the one who carried the franchise.
This movie has so much character and is one of my all-time favorites. Captain Jack Sparrow alone carries the entire franchise, one of the greatest characters in film imo.
@@acidko512 Barbossa is a great character, he does add a lot, that's a good point. It's really Sparrow's peculiarity and unique style that does it for me. Both respectable pirates though! lol
@@j.hateshisjob5137 I think what you're looking for is the contrast between Jack and Barbossa, which makes their interactions both memorable and funny.
@@VarjoPira Agreed, it is the brilliant contrast between the stereotypical "yar har" cutthroat pirate played so well as Barbossa and the strange mannerisms and behavior of Sparrow that make their relationship memorable. That and yeah of course the many funny moments.
It's a shame that Johnny Depp's reputation can be tarnished with outlandish accusations and lies. It's not a Pirates of the Caribbean film without him.
Worst part of it is that the”worst” thing he admitted to is letting his daughter use cannabis. The rest of it was amber being insane and lying and being evil. I mean how you gonna fire a guy that’s not a really bad guy that’s playing an antihero
Disney decided to move on from Depp over a year before his personal life blew up. He did unfairly lose his role in Fantastic Beasts, but Disney had already announced their decision to move on.
ikpts No, it was because they had heard about the accusations, before they were made public. You can check it, they were planning to have another movie, but the accusations caused Depp to be a lot less focused on the 5th movie.
OK, Johnny is probably innocent about that woman's accusations. But he's not exactly the easiest hollywood star to work with. A day lost because the movie star is having a tantrum means some millions going down the flush.
same here. I think the first one was the most colorful one, the second the grittiest, the third the darkest... but all in all, a great trilogy nonetheless. I've watched "On Stranger Tides" and it was uninteresting, with some nice moments, because there were Jack and Hector in them (and Ian McShane, let's not forget about him). otherwise forgettable.
@@waltercomunello121 yknow, I LIKE on stranger tides...but, like...there are amazing moments, but a lot of it is just bland, bland filler. Like, I remember the London chase, and the fountain of youth stuff... AND NOTHING ELSE CUZ ITS JUST FILLER
@@specs6637 they’re talking about the fact that the sword Will made, as a theme and tie in to his character, comes up more than once across the trilogy. At the end of the first movie, Norrington tells him “this is a beautiful sword” and he tells Will that he “expects the man who made it would show the same care and devotion to every aspect of his life.” Something like a sword would seem like an insignificant detail, and yet they decide to bring it back at Norrington’s death scene, where he was stabbed by it (by Will’s dad if I remember right?) and Davy Jones takes it for his own saying oh so casually, “nice sword.” It’s possible they bring it up at other moments across the trilogy, but Norrington’s death is the only part I can remember atm.
I could go on a while taking about the symbolism but I’ll spare you all. The sword’s (TS) existence began in Will’s hands. His skill made it one of the finest, we know this because everyone who held it commented on it’s valor. Norrington welded TS honorably until he was killed. As he died he stabbed Davy Jones with it in a noble response to Jones’ question “Do you fear death?” Jones briefly took ownership of TS ultimately using it to kill Will. The vast irony of TS killing its maker is astounding but anyway...we all know that Will resurrected and TS is now his. TS switched hands throughout the series but remained a part of the story. I like that it’s only been owned by Captains and 2 of those captains were stabbed by it. TS began in Will’s hands and found its way back to them. Almost as if it was made for him from the start. Anyway, I remember reading a book in elementary school about a 200 year old doll and her perception of the world through different owners. TS reminded me of this aspect. Imagine being the sword and perceiving the journey through it’s POV. It tells a story of its own.
POTC, LOTR, and Harry Potter were 3 movie franchises that my mom and I always loved watching. When she was finally losing to her 2nd battle with cancer we spent her last few weeks rewatching them all. Rest in peace mom, we miss you.
This is sad, man. As a person who had cancer and survived it, times in the hospital have always been a positive memory for me. Sometimes it’s a bit of a harsh wake up call to know that I could have died, and so many others *have* died. I hope your mom (wherever she may be) is doing good, man.
Or just don’t give me a PotC 6 at all anyway. From the ppl who made the 5th movie, I have zero interest in them further trashing the series I hold so dear. Things need to be let laid to rest when it’s the right time before being driven into the dirt.
I would prefer to not get the 6th movie at all, knowing how JD feels about returning to Disney. I would hate to see a movie that he reluctantly stars in after what happened.
I'm not so sure about that. Can you really call it a genre (or a 'saved' genre for that matter) if there's but one single franchise in it? I feel it's more like Star Wars and the science fantasy genre. That it works for one franchise does not mean that the genre in on itself is working.
@@K3end0 That's basically my point. The success of Pirates of the Caribbean did not effect the popularity of the pirates genre, but only the popularity of Pirates of the Caribbean. The genre itself is still a cash grave for everyone doing a movie not linked to the PotC-franchise.
I think its a bit like with Western Movies. Everything in it has been done ad nauseam. Everything you could do would hardly be recognized as a Western Movie. But you can still revive a trend. There has been a lot of fun pirate video games, RPGs and such because of this movie.
Jack’s introduction scene is one of the best in cinematic history. Him proudly sailing on top of a broken down dinghy until it sinks down while the film frames it as a grand entrance is just the best way to introduce to the audience what this character is all about. It’s all visual storytelling without any line or dialogue yet still it is super effective
Pirates of the Caribbean also had the best supporting cast. I don’t mean just Elizabeth, Will, and Barbossa, all of whom are great, but Norrington, Gibbs, Pintel & Ragetti, both Barbossa’s crew and Jack’s crew, all of whom have moments that make them so memorable. Even the two royal guards guarding Norrington’s ship that Jack talks to have their own arc that plays out. It’s truly a unique film that stands out even among the sequels.
@@mspaintlive8995 in a perfect cinematic world, Will & Elizabeth would have never appeared again, at least as the primary focus. Their story, especially Will, was done at the end of the first film, and bringing them back was not the right move. Every Pirates film should have been new characters with their own arcs, completed at the end of the film, while the series overall being about Jack and his adventures and schemes. Then, when it’s time to wrap up the series, have the final film finally be about Jack, and all the previous main characters coming back to help in their way.
In a modern age of making “strong women icons in movies” we should stop and appreciate what made Elizabeth Swan Turner such a spectacular heroine in this trilogy. Emily Blunt’s character in jungle cruise tried to be Elizabeth, but didn’t have what made her great. Instead of spending half of her jokes talking about a woman wearing pants, they made her a strong and valiant fighter who only improved with each movie. She still had fear in the movies, she still had weaknesses, but they were very natural, and she did what she could to overcome them all
My favorite part about Jack is throughout the movie the audience gets to see through his actions that he is in fact a good man. His fight scene with Will is the one that exemplifies this the most. Telling will the shot isn't meant for him, Jack asking several times nicely for Will to move, maneuvering will away from the door so he can just leave, trying to leave to save Will from having a black mark on his record. But the one that i've just recently noticed is the one that's the most telling. When Will returns to the shop and sees Jack's hat he reaches out to grab it,. Jack stops him by hitting Will's hand with the blunt side of his cutlass. If Jack were a truly evil pirate as most people would believe he would've cut off Will's hand without hesitation and then quickly kill him to quiet his shock induced screaming.
Eh. there's a difference between being "good" and having selective honor. Jack is not a good guy. He can be good to people he trusts or cares about, even being willing to sacrifice what he wants for those people. But at the end of the day, honor is out the window in favor of his selfish desires. Makes for a great character though.
@@thecrazyslopoke Yeah, although there was a deleted scene that implies he legitimately only started on this path because he freed a bunch of slaves, so that's cool.
I've been saying for years, Jack Sparrow's introduction is one of the best character introductions in film history. Within the first minute, we know who he is, what he is about, and that he is the luckiest SOB on the planet! All with ZERO dialogue. Great character with a flawless intro!
It's also helpful to have the other main characters also reflect the theme in their arcs: Elizabeth is shown struggling for her freedom against what's expected of her; Will struggles against what he thinks it's proper in order to be free to do what his heart truly desires; Barbossa is driven to be free of his curse, even at the expense of his own life. It's just a really tight film script all around, honestly.
The aspect of Jack respecting his peers because he's proud of being a pirate is something so strong it even comes back later, in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, specifically when Davy Jones says "Even without the Pearl, you always presented yourself as 'Captain Jack Sparrow'."
@@DaScorpionSting Doubt they would even turn a profit in a Pirates film without Depp, especially if the Amber Heard drama is the reason for him not appearing.
Let's not forget that this entire film franchise was inspired by a theme park ride that was infamous for breaking down for extended periods of time. The fact a character as iconic as Captain Jack Sparrow was born from this is a miracle in and of itself.
All of the evidence is against Amber. The Court: Johnny! How dare you do and say such terrible things! We can only hope and pray that people get brains that are willing to look at both sides for once.
@@st4ne4rmthevill63 Well he wasn't ever officially fired from Pirates I don't think, they just didn't decide to hire him back. He was fired from fantastic beasts but, let's all be real here Johnny was wrong for the role, and the movies were trash. But as far as the courts always believing the woman, this will be a Jury trial and there is quite a bit of Audio of Amber admitting to hitting him. Plus don't forget how many Jurors are going to believe anything from a woman who lied about donating money to a children's hospital. His loss in the UK case was tragic but even in that case one of the reasons the Judge cited as a reason he believed her was the donation to the CHLA which we now know NEVER happened.
One thing I would like to add is that Jack Sparrow isn't the "Main Character" of the 1st movie, Will Turner is. Turner plays role of the Audience surrogate which allows a number of fun things to happen for Jack's character: Sparrow gets to be a bit more over the top in his actions while Turner (and the audience) is impressed by him. Turner gets to have the more pure motivations, rescue the girl he loves, while Jack is seemingly motivated by greed for much of the film. Allowing the audience to see him as likeable "bad boy" Turner gets to play the "straight man" role to Jacks wacky antics. Comedy often needs and "Abbot" and "Costello" to truly shine. Turner gets to discover more about himself and the world around him (as an audience surrogate) through Jack's expertise. When all of Jack's antics would start to be to much, you can switch over to Will Turner's plotlines about his Father and love interest for more "Serious" plot lines with out as much tonal whiplash for either character. In the end the fact that Jack Sparrow is the most important character the 1st Pirates movie (as well as the whole franchise); but when he is supported by other strong characters with strong motivations and lifting some of the narrative load of the film, then he gets to truly shine as a larger then life figure in films. As you say, a film icon.
Also, by presenting him as a supporting character, he gets to be a greedy antihero as you said, but that gives the film the opportunity for a twist when Jack acts "out of character" by heroically saving the protagonists. So we get a cathartic revelation that deep down he's not the unscrupulous bastard he's pretending to be. Obviously you can't do that same song and dance in every film and expect the same cathartic results, it's the kind of thing that has diminishing returns, but it's part of what made those first few films so great.
Personally in my headcanon, At World's End did conclude Jack's story in a way that truly worked. He was right back where he started yet in a place that seemed to be his home. He was in a small little boat, chasing his "freedom" always just over the horizon.
I prefer the fifth movie’s end (say what you want about 4 and 5, not my concern here) because Captain Jack of the Black Pearl (with the monkey no less!) is just such a perfect end since his story really did start on the Pearl. We just didn’t see it
After rewatching the Trilogy this week, I came to a realization. Curse of the Black Pearl is Jack's Movie, Dead Man's Chest is Will Movie, and At World's End is Elizabeth's Movie. I truly, deeply love the OG 3 Movies and I hope that a 6th movie does get made at some point. Long live Captain Jack Sparrow, the Pirate Jesus!
You’re the only person who talks about this franchise with love everyone else always got some shit to say like they’re getting paid for it, all film is subjective but people go out of their way to shit on the pirates films without a discussion at all. Anyway, thanks for all you do and your content!
It's the same thing with Dawn of Justice. People can dislike films as much as they want, but so many people hate both Pirates of the Caribbean and Dawn of Justice in ways that make no sense.
Saw Curse of the Black Pearl in theatres. One of the best character introductions ever. One of the more enjoyable movie experiences ever. Then... they made more.
A detail that really add some depth to Cpt Sparrow and my personal favourite one is why does he have that P brand and East India Trading company tattoo on his arm: Jack Sparrow actually worked for the East India Trading co. in the past and was appointed captain of a ship named the "Wicked Wench". Cpt Sparrow was tasked by Lord Beckett to cargo some merchandise, but he realised during his voyage that the merchandises he was supposed to deliver were in fact slaves. Jack decided to abort his initial mission and freed the slaves on an island, betraying his employers. Upon hearing this, Lord Beckett chased and caught Cpt Sparrow, branded a "P" on his arm for "'Piracy" to punish him for his act and set the Wicked Wench on fire, darkening the ship's hull and giving it tattered sails. Cpt Sparrow then decided to rename the ship the Black Pearl. This is personally my favourite piece of lore in the franchise because it adds so much depth to the Black Pearl, adding some past history to the ship and actually shows that Cpt Sparrow is much more humane than most people in this era, where a crushing majority of people would see the cruelty of slavery as a mundane thing. This is why the idea of freedom is very dear to him too by the way; seeing those slaves deprived of it and him deciding to give it back to them changed his view of the world forever. I'm just sad the movies dont explain this part of both the Black Pearl's and Jack Sparrow's past.
"What makes Pirates of Caribbean Pirates of Caribbean: Cpt. Jack Sparrow" And then we have Disney who decided that it's a good idea to make the next POTC movie without him
Black pearl, dead man's chest, and at world's end are my favorite pirates of the caribbean movie's in my opinan they were the perfect trilgoy and pirates worked well because of Johnny and I do hope he is successful with his trial the man is a good person.
If anyone's interested, the feeling that the entire world started when you were born is called _"ab ovo_ syndrome". It's Latin for "from an egg", basically when your story starts from the very beginning. The other way would be _"in medias res"_ ("in the middle of"), when the story starts from some moment in the middle. That's what a lot of writers miss, that your story and characters aren't born at the exact moment your script starts, or at least most of the time they're not. A good backstory with some lore and some important story details that get revealed in opportune moments - that's what makes characters more real, less like a one-dimensional object.
They’ll wait a few years for some new up and coming studio golden boy to come along and they’ll just hand him the franchise. Between marketing and production, it will cost half a billion dollars and bomb. Im calling it.
@@DaScorpionSting well in America yes but that's not where even half of the money comes from. Mostly China so they'll still make bank but not as much ad they would get before.
Idk how but Curse of the Black Pearl is so damn memorable. Jack is really what gives the movie it's identity and the way his backstory is weaved into the narrative is understated. The trick he pulls at the end to give himself the curse before a duel was genius. It's just damn good entertainment. Very difficult to get into the sequels but that first film is near perfect.
Nothing like a classic, middle-toned adventure story. Enough seriousness to feel wholesome, but enough lightness to never need to be in a specific mood to rewatch. Those were my favorites growing up.
The intro of the video made me realize something that really surprised me : the very first time I got exposed to Jack Sparrow was when I was around 6 or 7, when Dead Man's Chest was on TV one night. It's not until I was 19 that I suddenly remembered the franchise and watched it from the beginning, but that's not really the point - the thing is, since I was 6 till then *I still remembered Jack Sparrow* clear as day, name and all, despite never actually seeing him anywhere or hearing about the Pirates movies after that. Truly goes to show that he is THAT memorable, even for a little kid, and for years after. (Oh and Davy Jones also got burned into my mind and I was SO excited to get to the parts featuring him when I rewatched his movie!)
well we all know that hobbit is crap and the LotR movies are just good because of WHAT they used and not because of the shitty story. don't understand be wrong, i'm a huge Middle Earth fan but the movies didn't catch what the books threw.
One thing they sadly cut later on that gave an interesting insight into Jack's character was his conversation with Beckett. Beckett discusses Jack's betrayal of "liberating" some "cargo" he was supposed to deliver, with Jack turning his wrist to show the P (implying that this was when he was branded), and Jack just replies that people are not cargo. This fits really well with his character, a man who values freedom above everything else. He has little problem sacrificing his friends to effective death to ensure his own individual freedom, but leaving people enslaved is not something he's willing to do. At the least, his own life and freedom would need to be threatened before he'd willingly allow another to be enslaved like that.
13:38 i'd like to point out that Jack was NOT outclassed by Will in swordsmanship, Jack was better than Will, Will was only winning because he was fighting in his own workshop and knew every inch of it and had a ready arsenal to use. Jack was at a major disadvantage and was still even until the end.
This is very true. Jack literally wins the exchange and is turning to leave when Will does something that otherwise would've been actual suicide if he wasn't actively surrounded by weapons.
@@THE-X-Force More accurate to say he didn't actively want him dead. The reason he didn't want to *shoot* Will was because he only had one shot, and he'd already made the decision to save it for Barbosa.

Jack is one of the best examples ive ever seen of a character who wants people to underestimate him - he takes advantage of them for that exact reason. he's incredibly clever and quick-thinking, if a bit quirky, and people mistake his quirks for buffoonery. but he's learned that because people *think* he's stupid, its much easier to outsmart them. i love watching his thought process acted out so subtly and clearly on screen. as a kid, the PotC movies were just some funny pirates prancing around doing pirate things, but now i'm older and can follow the story, its amazing how much nuance these seemingly over-the-top movies put into their characters and writing and cinematography. it's genius. another reason Gore Verbinski is one of my favourite directors.
The interesting thing is that Jack Sparrow, despite being jovial, and fun, and likable, isn’t really relatable. He’s the most larger than life, wacky character that you’d probably meet. Which, I suppose, is the rule of thumb when writing characters, don’t try to make them relatable or likable so that you have characters the audience will like- DON’T do that. You can make relatable characters, and you can make them good people, or likable, but don’t have that be WHY they’re good characters. Have characters endear themselves to the audience by making them interesting. Make elements of their characters compelling, make it so that they have interesting relationships with other characters that you just grin stupidly when you see the two of them interact on screen, make them of any alignment- just make them interesting. Also be sure to make them active characters with choices, not just objects being dragged around by the plot.
Indeed, when the only thing from a character's personality that's remarkable is how relatable they are I don't feel satisfied at all, feels like the author tried to appeal to the lowest common denominator instead of making something to stand out.
I love these movies, i can watch them over and over again. What makes them so rewatchable are the story, the music, the action and most importantly Jack Sparrow!
Imagine, instead of having that glorious intro. Someone was just talking about how Jack was that way. After you realize how terrible of a decission that would have been, somehow it is a very common way to introduce characters. That is why the rule, show do not tell, is so important.
without Johnny there is no Pirates of The Caribbean. i love when Johnny gets a blank character and makes it his own, i mean i love when he plays existing characters like Wonka, Mad Hatter etc but when he gets a character like Jack thats pretty much blank, its perfection. Hes phenomenal

Definetely my favorite movie of the trilogy. It ls so simple yet so epic, with awesome well-written characters and astounding music. And don't forget the most amazing main character intro of all time.
I think Johnny's going to return to the franchise, since "as said", Disney apologized to him, so he's probably getting the role back? And hopefully we get to see a Jack Sparrow of the PotC 4 (with his smart plans) and his acting in the original trilogy!
Even if he’s brought back. Do we wanna see any more movies from the same people who made the abomination that was PotC 5, which spat on everything that made the Pirates series great? Please, even if Depp is brought back, don’t give Disney a dime. People need to show them that we shouldn’t stand for all these reboots and remakes of their old properties to make a quick buck rather than having actual creativity.

@@TheFunPop Depp is Pirates of the Caribbean.. Meaning that, PotC 5 was bad because Depp didn't play his role, the way he was meant to play it, because of the on-going trials he had with Amber.. Also, did you know that were scenes in previous installments of the franchise that had Jack do something strange and Depp stepped up and said "That isnot Jack.." and then they "fixed" the scenes.. Known for those actions, are the scenes in Buckingham Palace, where he escapes, and another scene in PotC 2 where he tried to escape the natives.. The plot at that time, had the crew fight for Jack's freedom, and Depp said that this wouldnot ideal for his role, to which afterwards he recommended that the crew had to escape alongside Jack Sparrow, in the same place, but in different scenes.. And that's how it happened.. You can see Depp's influence in a scene and how he changed it, if you watch carefully enough.. What I mean, by that, is that the fact that Depp didn't care for PotC 5, doesnot mean that he wouldnot care about PotC 6, ever since the reaction of his fans wanting him back to the franchise.
@@greeko7638 Doesn't change the fact that Disney has been bad when it comes to their recent movies, and you're simply _assuming_ he will play the role well. The point is, they've already ruined so many plot points in PotC 5 to the point that it's just an absolute mess that I don't want to see ruined further. It's not just Jack's character. That last point about Jack representing freedom is something that hit very close to home for me, being a One Piece fanatic and always being kinda frustrated when people complain about the characters not being actual pirates. Basically saying, Luffy and Jack share the same ideals that piracy is the way for them to be truly free, not as pillaging bandits doing crimes for the sake of doing crimes but to do, go and be whatever they want without any restrictions, being lawless men and adventuring the seas is their calling and what they seek.
Curse of the Black Pearl is the best of the Potc movies, and Jack’s introduction in the movie is golden In less than 2 minutes, you learn everything you need to know about him, and how no matter how smart you think you are, Jack is smarter, he’s also resourceful, capable, he’s capable, and in later scenes we see all of that showing, he’s always thinking ten steps ahead “It’s a shilling to dock your ship here and I’ll need to know your name” “How about three shillings and we forget the name?” Proceeds to steal a wallet containing 15 shillings Later... “And I suppose you’ll want me to spare the whelp?” “No no by all means, kill the whelp, just not yet, wait for the opportune moment,” Proceeds to betray Barbossa and free Will to get his help in defeating the mutinous crew Or even earlier, when he steals the Dauntless but uses it as a diversion to steal the Interceptor which will be more useful as it’s faster and more readily available, he even sabotages the Dauntless You see these sorts of traits all throughout the series (except in the 4th and 5th ones of course) where Jack will effortlessly outsmart everyone around him One of my personal favourites being in At World’s End when Cutler Beckett has Jack on the Endeavour but Jack uses his figurine to fire a cannon, thus propelling him toward the Black Pearl and the cannon’s shot destroying the Endeavour’s mast I like that scene especially because the one sailor asks “Do you think he plans it all out?” The answer is YES, he plans it all out then finds ways to improvise that plan to victory, combining both madness and brilliance; “It’s interesting how often those two traits coincide,”

There are so many different amazingly perfect things about that film that it feels like, to me, at least, it would be criminal if I didn’t cover them all when talking about it. The scene on the beach to address Jack's escape from the island is so clever. No answer would be fulfilling yet plausible, which is a common problem with mystery boxes. So, the film mocks that the answer is unfulfilling, and makes it fit Jack's character perfectly.

I’m a huge fan of the first 3 movies, flaws and all. The fact that the sword Will made even had a journey...amazing storytelling.
Could you please elaborate on wills sword having a journey? I’d very much like to hear about this. I missed this in my viewings

The first pirates of the Caribbean movie single handedly save the pirate movie genre. Jack Sparrow is an icon character.

It’s truly a unique film that stands out even among the sequels.
tbh, i'm more interested in every single characters in the movie excpet Will & Elizabeth. But they still gave a fitting entertainment for us
It's always funny to me that Jack is considered the main character and Will and Elizabeth are seen as side characters when the opposite is true lmao
@@mspaintlive8995 Yes, absolutely. Jack is the supporting character. I just elaborated on that point above.
@@SAPProd I cannot accept this erasure of both Will and Elizabeth's excellent character arcs over the 2nd and 3rd movie
She still had fear in the movies, she still had weaknesses, but they were very natural, and she did what she could to overcome them all
Elizabeth is really an underappreciated character

Agreed
Eh. there's a difference between being "good" and having selective honor.

One thing I would like to add is that Jack Sparrow isn't the "Main Character" of the 1st movie, Will Turner is. Turner plays role of the Audience surrogate which allows a number of fun things to happen for Jack's character:
Sparrow gets to be a bit more over the top in his actions while Turner (and the audience) is impressed by him.
Turner gets to have the more pure motivations, rescue the girl he loves, while Jack is seemingly motivated by greed for much of the film. Allowing the audience to see him as likeable "bad boy"
Turner gets to play the "straight man" role to Jacks wacky antics.
Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot said that Elizabeth is the main character of the series.

A detail that really add some depth to Cpt Sparrow and my personal favourite one is why does he have that P brand and East India Trading company tattoo on his arm:
Jack Sparrow actually worked for the East India Trading co. in the past and was appointed captain of a ship named the "Wicked Wench".
Jack Sparrow"
And then we have Disney who decided that it's a good idea to make the next POTC movie without him
Well, Hollywood thought they could remove James Bond from the 007 movie or John Connor from Terminator and still have an audience.

To be fair, the last one would have worked if Lord Depp wasn't going through hell
As you said, Jack Sparrow *is* The Pirates of the Caribbean. Without that character the franchise is bereft of it's heart.
It's like Davy Jones... Jack is the heart of this incredible franchise, but they plan to rip out said heart
And thus, the Dutchman will descend and become cursed and lost from its purpose
Oh, sorry, did I say Dutchman? I meant franchise
Can you make a LOTR video like how you did Pirates, all of the Pirates movies, including Hobbit
YES
Please, don't...

@@dannyscranton1967 Now, be nice, I'm just not a fan of The Hobbit, that's all...too many and much film for a very small tome...

Depp's bombastic performance outshines everyone in the film. Jack Sparrow eccentric , drunken hand gestures are comedic gold. Very enjoyable film
The first two pirates of the Caribbean movies were amazing! Even the 3rd one wasn't that bad except for its running time.
I didn't mind the third film. It was a good film to end the story of Will and Elizabeth
The first 3 were great, In my opinion.
Third one was the best
And its pace
I think the first three as a whole. Even though I love the first one the most, I can't really separate them because of the story.
This is even more astonishing when you consider it was an accident. Jack was meant to be the comic relief character, not the main character
Also, he was trying to *_not_* kill Will.
@@THE-X-Force More accurate to say he didn't actively want him dead. The reason he didn't want to *shoot* Will was because he only had one shot, and he'd already made the decision to save it for Barbosa.
@@selonianth lol .. I don't want to get into some internet movie nerd fight haha .. buuuuut (lmao!)
I don't know if you remember the scene, but it starts with Jack slapping will on the back of the hand with his sword, when Will reaches for Jack's hat. He could have lopped his hand right off, and then shoved his cutlass through Will's eye and out the back of his head lol. He could have stabbed him in the back. He could have .. blah blah blah. In other words .. he _could have_ killed Will _*without *_ using the gun, and not just from that initial moment, but several times during the fight. If Jack was just some evil, cut-throat, viscous pirate, Will would have been dead.
I love how well the effects in this film aged. Hell what I love the most about the final fight is how they actually animated the changes when they enter & leave moonlight
Pirates 1 is the pirates version of Star Wars A New Hope, a solid beginning for a franchise
Pirates 1 is the entire star wars OT for the franchise, building up the universe, the important characters and stuff (stop lying, a new hope was not that good. It was like: you just read Wyrd Sisters of all the Discworld books and say that this is the basic book for all the other books)

Here we go filmento is simping for pirates of the carribean again...
And i love it
Lol yeah, im not complaining
Rightfully so, may I add 😉
Imagine, instead of having that glorious intro. Someone was just talking about how Jack was that way. After you realize how terrible of a decission that would have been, somehow it is a very common way to introduce characters.
That is why the rule, show do not tell, is so important.
You know, if every production crew was like that of the POTC, we could be getting masterpieces every year.
Only the first movie is decent, the other ones should be called The Milking of Jack Sparrow
The reason Jack is such a memorable character is because he has his background naturally explored through a story that isn't his.
Seriously davy Jones effects are amazing, genuinely better than some new movies
without Johnny there is no Pirates of The Caribbean. i love when Johnny gets a blank character and makes it his own, i mean i love when he plays existing characters like Wonka, Mad Hatter etc but when he gets a character like Jack thats pretty much blank, its perfection. Hes phenomenal
I love how this whole video is a setup to demand what you want. This goes beyond just a youtube video.
Film theory as leverage for a better Pirates 6. Its actually really clever.

Definetely my favorite movie of the trilogy. It ls so simple yet so epic, with awesome well-written characters and astounding music. And don't forget the most amazing main character intro of all time.
I agree, although you could argue Darth Vadar is up there in terms of intro.
The director commentary in this movie stated that Jack's character was inspired by bugs bunny. That pretty much says it all
I love how you put Never Forget from Halo 3 while you were saying this is the last Pirates of the Caribbean video, nice touch man...
"Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End" is my favorite out of the franchise.

I'm sorry, Disney, but you cannot make a Pirate of the Caribbean film with Johnny Depp. He is the franchise.
Without*
I *AM* the franchise!
Disney: with? Okay he's already fired. 😊
They've also proven they also can't make one with him when they lose sight of what it was that everyone liked about the first one.
Have you seen 2-5? He's in them and they suck!
You can here the sadness in Filmento’s voice as he speaks about a franchise that he really loves and that also has been ruined forever
I think Johnny's going to return to the franchise, since "as said", Disney apologized to him, so he's probably getting the role back? And hopefully we get to see a Jack Sparrow of the PotC 4 (with his smart plans) and his acting in the original trilogy!
They "apologised" to him doesn't mean they are sorry. It just means they were told to apologise.
@@nikvalentincic9764 same shit as when they kept trying to fuck over Robin williams during his voicing of batty in ferngully. (because how dare he not devote all his time to their projects instead)
I understand he had things going on at the time, but a series should be allowed to rest when its time comes. The point is, they've already ruined so many plot points in PotC 5 to the point that it's just an absolute mess that I don't want to see ruined further. It's not just Jack's character. So many logistics that were pre-established were retconned or no longer make sense.
Most memorable characters are those who embody something (vader is darkness and tragedy, jack is motive and freedom)

@Ricard Karstark unfortunately.
Happy to watch this video again now that Johnny Depp is back!!! Literally can't wait for his performance. One gets the feeling it'll be one of his best yet.
From a man who outsmarted literally everyone to a bumbling drunk
That last point about Jack representing freedom is something that hit very close to home for me, being a One Piece fanatic and always being kinda frustrated when people complain about the characters not being actual pirates.
Basically saying, Luffy and Jack share the same ideals that piracy is the way for them to be truly free, not as pillaging bandits doing crimes for the sake of doing crimes but to do, go and be whatever they want without any restrictions, being lawless men and adventuring the seas is their calling and what they seek.
Finally, you explain my love for Jack Sparrow. And the Black pearl. And why I wish to sail the seas.
CAPTAIN!!
Curse of the Black Pearl is the best of the Potc movies, and Jack’s introduction in the movie is golden
In less than 2 minutes, you learn everything you need to know about him, and how no matter how smart you think you are, Jack is smarter, he’s also resourceful, capable, he’s capable, and in later scenes we see all of that showing, he’s always thinking ten steps ahead
“It’s a shilling to dock your ship here and I’ll need to know your name”
“How about three shillings and we forget the name?”
Proceeds to steal a wallet containing 15 shillings
Later...
“And I suppose you’ll want me to spare the whelp?”
“No no by all means, kill the whelp, just not yet, wait for the opportune moment,”
Proceeds to betray Barbossa and free Will to get his help in defeating the mutinous crew
Or even earlier, when he steals the Dauntless but uses it as a diversion to steal the Interceptor which will be more useful as it’s faster and more readily available, he even sabotages the Dauntless
You see these sorts of traits all throughout the series (except in the 4th and 5th ones of course) where Jack will effortlessly outsmart everyone around him
One of my personal favourites being in At World’s End when Cutler Beckett has Jack on the Endeavour but Jack uses his figurine to fire a cannon, thus propelling him toward the Black Pearl and the cannon’s shot destroying the Endeavour’s mast
I like that scene especially because the one sailor asks “Do you think he plans it all out?”
The answer is YES, he plans it all out then finds ways to improvise that plan to victory, combining both madness and brilliance; “It’s interesting how often those two traits coincide,”

Maybe one day it gets to that xD. Though not sure really how to do that now that we've run out of movies to cover
@@Filmento You could make videos highlighting different aspects of the movies. Also I was expecting a pun about sharks in this video, come on! XD
How often does pirates get "circle jerked" the last 14 years of its existence it doesn't get nearly enough praise as Star Wars or Avengers gets. Only recently we got more nuanced analysis other than "potc 1 is good, the rest idk/forgot" that gets repeated every single time.
@@Filmento We totally need a channel just for PotC videos. I haven't seen a SINGLE ONE jet. And also I believe that you are the only one who can give every of this five movies what they deserve (in a positive AND negative way). Do that mate, the fandom needs it.
@@Filmento You could make different videos covering different aspects of a movie in POTC, but if you do that, I would also like you to do another video covering different sides of Spider-Verse. There are so many different amazingly perfect things about that film that it feels like, to me, at least, it would be criminal if I didn’t cover them all when talking about it. And about doing that kind of stuff, you’ve already done it before, you did one video praising Endgame for being a perfect ending, and another video talking about it’s few flaws. (Aka the Thanos Rat problem) If you ever decide to do that, I will be looking forward to it.
The scene on the beach to address Jack's escape from the island is so clever. No answer would be fulfilling yet plausible, which is a common problem with mystery boxes. So, the film mocks that the answer is unfulfilling, and makes it fit Jack's character perfectly.
