They've been called the greatest bar band ever. Any of the David Lee Roth stuff is great. Some of the songs got over played a bit, don't overlook songs with a smaller view count. Van Hagar is solid, some of it good, but not like the old stuff.
House of pain if your looking for the unexpected change in guitars or I'm the one which is all unexpected including vocals. Or even human beings. Could be here all night but I have to head for night shift. Love and peace from Scotland and keep rocking
Andy & Alex You dorks need to hear Atomic Punk and Im The One. Unchained, One Foot Out The Door are also musts. Most Van Halen songs are relatively short. (Under 5 minutes) so Eddie VH launches into his solos midway thru song. Which are normally not very long solos but he takes advantage of that short time. You two are gonna love VH like you do Boston. One thing though... Van Halen is David Lee Roth NOT Sammy Hagar!!!

Mean street for sure. I was a DJ at my High School radio station back in the mid 80's and got a suspension for playing it before 10AM because of a "No Metal Before 10" policy. Totally worth it.
If you review ‘Running with the devil’ you’ll hear the lead singer do a quick fill vocal where he sings ‘Goddamn the navy and all you lifers’ - he was in the Navy and hated it.
October 19th, 1982. Spectrum Philadelphia, Pa. Eddie had broken his hand a few days before and VH had to cancel some shows in Jersey but thankfully the tour had resumed that night and me and my bud from school were able to see them live, my first legit concert, I was barely 15 years old. First thing I saw was Eddie, Mike, and Alex on stage and they started playing the opening riff of Running With The Devil. I was so focused on Eddie's cast and how he was playing I forgot about Dave and then wondered "where the hell was Dave?" Next thing I know a spotlight shines on him standing on a platform or amp or something, looked like it was fifty feet tall for all I knew (obviously not) and he jumps and does a mid-air split, lands perfectly and rolls right in to the song without missing a beat. Crowd went nuts. About halfway through the show they're jammin' to Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, I'm standing against the railing on the second level and someone smacks my ass. I turn around and see this super cute chick in ripped jeans and skin tight t-shirt smiling at me. Then she came in real close nuzzled up against my neck, bit my earlobe and made this "grrrrrrr" sound that sent a shockwave through me that I will never forget. Then she backed away, yelled "whooooooo" and danced out of my life. Great show, great memories.
Here's a fact jack! All the material for the first 2 lps we're all ready wrote before they released Van Halen 1 !!! They just split it up into 2 albums. You could play both of them back to back and every song kicks ass !!!! For real! Just like def leopard high n dry and pyromania..and scorpions love drive and animal magnetism! No filler songs but kick-ass jams!
Yess, I was in High School when this came out, and it BLEW us all away. Van Fuckin’ Halen was all anyone talked about, their sound was so much different then anyone else out at the time. Suggestions: “Running with the Devil”, “Mean Streets”, “You Really Got Me” “Unchained” “The Cradle will Rock”. Early Van Helen will always be the best Van Halen.
I remember driving round the streets with my mates in the mid-80’s smashing this album out along with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The band I was playing in at the time covered this song and it was always a crowd favourite. This whole album is one of the most important rock albums ever made, particularly as it introduced Eddie Van Halen to the world. Great memories.
"Eruption" which blends right into "You really got me" is an absolute must for any Van Halen fan. You will love it. Eruption is just an explosive guitar solo and you really got me is one of their top...top songs
"I'm the One" is probably the craziest VH song in their entire arsenal. Check it out. If it weren't for Eruption, it would probably be the song that made Eddie the phenomenon he is. Completely under-rated, often missed, bad-ass song!
Check out "You Really Got Me", a Kinks remake. When I first heard it on my car radio back in 1979, it was like "Who is that?" Then the first fill came and I was like "How's he do that?" Then the solo came and I had to pull over to the side of the road. It was jaw-dropping to say the least. Life changing, more like it.
Michael Kuhn That one & runnin w the devil. We knew there was something new & big pounding on the door. I’ve gotten this sense a few times in my years, like Iron Man & Teen Spirit.
Yeah... Mean Street would be a good one. The last album with David Lee Roth has Drop Dead Legs which is really good. Side Note: You heat Eddie “go-off” a lot on guitar solos. In my opinion that’s “one of the reasons” Eddie Van Halen was and is such a great guitar player. He typically plays to-the-song, it’s not always so much about himself. Especially the early stuff before he became this phenomenon. That’s why we have such INCREDIBLE SONGS like, Ice Cream Man, Dance the Night Away, Women in Love, Beautiful Girls... all those show his genius because he can pull back and write a great song. Most of the best known great guitar players are not great song writers.

Van Halen, we always see them as a our own dutch band because Alex and Eddie were born in the Netherlands. Beautiful guitar playing by Eddie van Halen They've had many great songs: Running with the devil Jamie's crying You really got me You're no good Jump
Dude this was their first hit single so it was short and sweet to try and get on the radio back in the day which is why it was lean in the solo and crazy stuff they were capable of still Eddie slamming crazy licks in everywhere he could. You have to remember This was when disco and pop were the big chart toppers.
3rd concert I ever saw. 1980 Invasion. El Paso Civic Center. During this song, I just remember the crowd-facing white lights strobing with the "HEY! HEY! HEY!" chant, crowd going full bore with them. Helluva lead-in story that is too long to type, but a night I will never forget. 16 years old at the time. :)

You've kicked a hornets nest now because you have Van Halen and Van Hagar. Both great versions of the band in their own right, but like Queen and Rush, you can't go wrong with anything either version of the band. My favorite Dave album is Fair Warning. My favorite Sammy album is 5150. EVH is a madman on Mean Street.
Hell yeah, I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on DLR or Sammy, even though Sammy is my favorite all time musician. It would be hard for me to pick out a VH song I don't like. I remember hearing Jump as a tiny kid not too long after it came out. There are some early Sammy songs that popped up on pandora that I didn't know and didn't like (maybe from Montrose).
A fantastic live choice would be "so this is love" from Oakland 1981. It's on UA-cam. They are all firing on all cylinders in that one. In their prime. Vh could be hit or miss live based on the drug and alc. Content lol. But the Oakland show was great!
Hey guys! ..I love your show here from Portland! This Van Halen debut in '78 changed me as a kid...it perpetuated my professional music career, and I enjoy seeing your own reactions as musicians too! Gentlemen, let's do "Atomic Punk"... the rear-view mirror will never be the same!
Great reax! Van Halen was a hugely popular band, so while they were absolutely lethal musicians, they didn't always play that way. This is a great example of them trying to reach the most people. Mean Street is an amazing, dark track from the album of the same name, that shows off everything they can do. But that was also one of their least selling albums. Earlier cuts like I'm the One, or Somebody Give Me a Doctor also jaw-dropping. Their first album is so solid, every track is amazing.
“Lighting up the sky”, def mean “streets”,”everybody wants some”,“unchained “is a great one where they really Rock, man there are so many songs you can do. On fire, and you really got me, pretty much anything from the first album. It’s so raw, Eddie and Dave at there best, also, Michael Anthony ripping it on bass and those great harmonies. Good shit🤘🤘🤘🤘
As musicians, you should also listen to “ girl gone bad” from the 1984 album to appreciate all of the band !! Other songs from the debut album to check out are “I’m the one “ & “ on fire “. As already said , Mean Street , Unchained & Take Your Whiskey Home...
The earlier Van Halen was all about the guitar. Later they were successful enough to cross over to the mainstream, and their music became more pop oriented. So it might help to keep that in mind when choosing which tracks you'd like to use in reaction videos. This track uses a snarling guitar to great effect. I liked Jamie's Crying and Ice Cream Man from that same album. DOA, Mean Street, And The Cradle Will Rock are also ones I can recommend from later albums.
One thing that gave them such a great sound was when Michael Anthony came on to play bass. His high voice blended in to provide just what the backing vocals needed to fill it out.
I know you youngins can’t relate, but when this first came out no one was doing what Eddy was doing on guitar, or to the degree he used said techniques. Today you can find five year old kids on UA-cam standing on their heads playing eruption in their sleep. But when this first came it ... wow!
VH first album set the world on fire. The entire album was a raw wake up call for rock guitar players and bombastic vocals. It was recorded mostly live and promoted by Gene Simmons of KISS who suggested they get a recording deal based on a demo tape he listened to. The rest is VH Rock History !
Van Halen was my absolute favorite band as a teenager. I was upset when they got rid of David Lee Roth but when I found out they replaced him with Sammy Hagar I was in heaven. I LOVE SAMMY HAGAR! He elevated Van Halen's music. The bassist, Michael Anthony, is one of the most underrated in the business. Mean Street is a very good suggestion. Sinner's Swing is a good one as well. Pretty much anything from the Hagar years. I stopped listening to them after that. Did see them live three times and they put on some awesome shows. They have a live album you should listen to, I think it was filmed as well. Can't remember.
You gotta realize when VH came out it wa slike a revelation. NO one had heard of finger tapping before and it was just mind blowing. I saw them at their best 3 times in concert and let me tell you EVH was amazing.
I was 8 years old when this album came out. Like most kids, I was sleeping in a tent in my backyard. My next door neighbour's teenage kid had this album and would play the first 2 tracks LOUD. Then, he would lift the needle and redrop the same 2 tracks, over and over and over and over. I couldn't have been happier.
Yea atomic punck badass seen. Them 80 81 82 85 and 86 seen when he played. Eruption. Killer need. To play sunday afternoon. In the park and 1 foot out the door 2 gather badass
Ok guys. Van Halen is good but they were raised on early SCORPIONS. You gotta get to the SCORPS, one of these days. (Pink Floyd reference) maybe start with some early stuff. "Inheritance" off their first album "Lonesome Crow" Or anything off their 2nd album "FLY TO THE RAINBOW"
I had on-stage tickets to Sammy and the Wabos and then the Scorpions played right after. I love the Scorpions, but their bad audio that night combined with no stage act compared to Sammy, really killed the buzz. They should have had the Scorpions first for us to enjoy and get warmed up and then continued with the huge Sammy production, and a better mix for the Scorpions audio. I also love all the DLR VH songs as well.
You nailed it when you said the drummer adds a certain thing to the song...as with most Van Halen tunes, Alex (the drummer) really leads into Eddie(the guitarist) and vice verse. Even with the solo, Eruption by Eddie, Alex leads it and finishes it with his drums.
you need to hear the short concept recording by Eddie Van Halen and brian May called the starfleet project / has a few very interesting jams on it between them
Millions of kids heard this album and picked up guitars as a result. The influence of EVH cannot be overstated or denied. VH is all about the swagger of DLR and the guitar heroics of EVH.
This has become one of my girlfriend’s favorites songs since we recorded this last week haha. Great jam, let us know what other Van Halen songs we have to hit, have a great weekend guys! 😁🔥

so cool to see you guys listening to music from my generation...late 70's early 80's rocked
Nice guys. I think best of both worlds is my favorite VH song
You both are in an enviable position. I also wanna hear this classics again for the first time.
This is my second favorite debut album, right after Boston's self titled debut.
Can you immagine Boston Foriegner Van Halen all within 2 yrs. All had awesome 1st albums.
I must say, you guys have the best sound in transmission. I listen with my head phones on too, and everything comes through crystal clear...
Duders tell me this wasn’t your first time listening to this!!!!! Great reaction btw
Freakin' straight on rock your socks off loud and proud cruisin' the strip and crank it up loud song!
Great reaction!
wel... if you want them to go off the chain... try " I'm the one"
You young men are GREAT! I wish your enthusiasm for rock and roll would become viral and cut all this pop rap nonsense.
Keep on truckin', my dudes!!
I know you youngins can’t relate, but when this first came out no one was doing what Eddy was doing on guitar, or to the degree he used said techniques. Today you can find five year old kids on UA-cam standing on their heads playing eruption in their sleep. But when this first came it ... wow!
THE WHOLE ALBUM ROCKS A GREAT FIRST RECORD
Please please check out "Mean Street" from their album "Fair Warning" play it loud!
Most underrated song by them. My fav one
And The Cradle Will Rock... is a great song from them, along with Take Your Whiskey Home, both of which are from the Women And Children First album.
Aww man, so many great one’s. Take your whiskey, Fools, DOA, Somebody give me a doctor.......I recommend doing the Van Halathon!!
Good one guys, as a VH fan since age 12 in 1978 I enjoyed it🤘🤘
My favorite VH tune is "Light up the Sky" Deep cut off of VHII
That first album I would give a 9.5 every song is good. Mean street is a good jam and everybody wants some!
One of my favs ^^
Just review the whole FAIR WARNING album by Van Halen! It’s 🔥 🤘🏼
This song f'n smokes! When Dave said [any] Van Halen album will melt all the other records in your collection, this song is what he was talking about!
Try Mean Street off Fair Warning
This is what I've been waiting for for so long FINALLY SOME VAN HALEN🤘🤘
Mean Street is the one.
How about a little Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion, or Montrose - Space Station No.5
I was 8 years old when this album came out. Like most kids, I was sleeping in a tent in my backyard. My next door neighbour's teenage kid had this album and would play the first 2 tracks LOUD. Then, he would lift the needle and redrop the same 2 tracks, over and over and over and over. I couldn't have been happier.
Atomic Punk or I'm the One))))
Yea atomic punck badass seen. Them 80 81 82 85 and 86 seen when he played. Eruption. Killer need. To play sunday afternoon. In the park and 1 foot out the door 2 gather badass
Not a bad song on the entire album! Timeless this album sounds as good as the day it came out. Absolutely one of the best albums of all time.
Ok guys. Van Halen is good but they were raised on early SCORPIONS. You gotta get to the SCORPS, one of these days. (Pink Floyd reference) maybe start with some early stuff. "Inheritance" off their first album "Lonesome Crow"
Or anything off their 2nd album "FLY TO THE RAINBOW"
