@@jarinhartley5668 Its both. Phase 90 is on all the time in the riff, while the Flanger is on for the end part of it. Its the one specific reason the end of the riff sounds like it does. Given how complicated it can become to turn the Flanger on and off for just three chords, i suspect the pedal might have a momentary switch (press and hold, the effect is on, let go, the effect is off). This is only my speculation tough.
EDDIE VAN HALEN passed away today (R.I.P.), he lost his battle against cancer....I will remember him & what he brought to the music history but also how he touched you within this video (just posted it on Twitter, btw), so again thank you for this brilliant reaction video ! Cheers from France !
For me Angus Young and Malcolm Young created the spark of obsession, then EVH turned it into an explosion of an obsession. To me, there will never be another guitarist that will be as good and innovative as EVH. R.I.P. Edward Van Halen. You will be missed by so very many.
I remember when that album came out. It changed everything in rock. Eddie Van Halen sent rock guitar in a different direction. Like Hendrix he raised the bar for everyone.
U are absolutely rite, tht album is still thre best one, buttttt they did not blow black sabbath off the stage, they opened for the sabs way outta there prime, and pretty much strung out, black sabbath is wayytty better
Eddie's guitar tone is legendary and millions of guitarists try to copy it,for decades. The ''Brown Tone'',they call it,is a combination of a flanger/phaser effect pedal, with some chorus/delay,plugged into a Marshall Plexi amp, cranked to eleven and Eddie's modded ''Frankenstein Strat'' guitar, which he build himself. The guy pretty much changed the way, people play guitar,in the late 70's/early 80's.He made the Floyd Rose Tremolo, popular with all his whammy bar tricks and also 2-hand finger tapping.Everybody and her mother,in the early 80's was running out to get a modded Superstrat with a Floyd Rose.
And don't forget the variac which took the 120 voltage of the plexi down to something like 60. Much like a dead 9 volt battery in a distortion pedal....the best crounch sound .
Indeed. There are certain guitarists that define not only an era and but shift musicians and bands and genres. Firmly within the echelons of legendary musicians.
Eddie played through a phaser foot pedal. In addition, he had a combination of amp settings, guitar pickups, and picking style that made his sound very percussive. This debut album came out in 1978 and no one had ever heard that guitar tone before. Revolutionary!
@@70elcamino. I distinctly remember reading years ago that the audio engineer and/or the band's produceeer had Eddie use a phaser, as that certainly is one of the guitar effects in use. Besides, I never said or thought Eddie himself paid for the phaser pedal. Please don't trouble me about this further - I'm not intending to trouble you about trivial things that don't really mean much anyway.
@Scott Warsing they still make echoplex's... You can buy Dunlop ones new, there are boutique recreations and of course the original units. People are also still making hand wired versions to the same spec. So what do you mean?
Earl Powell shit man the whole line you think you're really cooking you better find yourself a friend. Two six's are better then a ten.all day on the road.
As a guitar player of 35 years (playing since I was a kid), I can tell you that the guitar playing and sound on this album was revolutionary. It was the biggest change in rock playing and tone since Jimi Hendrix a decade prior. It completely changed the game and rock music, guitar design and amplifier design into the 80s and beyond.
I am also a guitar player and have be en for 8 years and I disagree. Black Sabbath, Boston and Mick Ronson all made some incredibly groundbreaking guitar tones.
No one has discussed the guitar tone in the comments - the guitar tone is pretty much legendary at this point - its known as the "brown sound" - there's a few things they did to make it sound so monstrous. So the amp was recorded with its back to the wall which created this slap back you hear in the intro. Then they messed around with the reverb - they kicked the reverb right up on the left speaker and the right speaker was much drier - not great for headphones but if you listen on stereo speakers, it sounds INCREDIBLY expansive and powerful. Add on some flanger and a tad a phaser into the mix to get that evolving timbre and you have a very very expansive sound. Of course, the amp and distortion amount had a big part but this stuff was so NEW - there was nothing else like it at the time and coupled with the otherworldly guitar playing - this shit was unbelievable. They were also VERY charismatic live - there is an infamous tour where they opened for black sabbath - and every night they just DESTROYED them - it was something people had never heard before and it was absolutely groundbreaking. Of course, Black Sabbath won the test of time battle overall but you can't understate just how amazing Van Halen were.
@phosphorescent wave Who cares of how he sing now? He was the greatest frontman, showman, entertainer of the world. And he was great on his time. Plant's tone sucks to me.
Your reaction was priceless!! Nobody sounded like Van Halen before. When this dropped. Minds were blown. We only had FM Radio. No MTV, Facebook, You Tube etc. It was unbelievable.
You gotta remember something. This came out in 1978. THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE THIS ANYWHERE IN ROCK MUSIC. Van Halen hit the public with a monstrous asteroid strike!
monokhem, Van Halen did NOT sound like Led Zeppelin. When "Van Halen" (the album) took off in the summer of '78 (I was there), it was almost (but not quite) the revelation that "Boston" (the album) was in '76-'77. Recording technology was improving by leaps and bounds in the late '70s, and "Van Halen" sounded like nothing that came before it. That's a fact, Jack.
Van Halen is SoCal party band and their vibe is about partying, feeling happy and living good. . . JUMP! Zepplin is blues band with a very dark edge that lends itself to an olde English history of Faire Queen & Alistar Crowley references like Nobody'S Fault But Mine.
I really like watching the reaction of these guys hearing for the first time what I've been listening to for 40 years. Its just amazing that this sound still holds up so well after 40 years. The reactions were so cool to see. Appreciate it.
I know where I was I bought the cassette cassette head just came out pretty much a 1978 and my brother had one in his car and I heard of this new van called Van Halen everybody was telling me about the cassette or the album so I bought it and within one song I knew that it was something special and that guitar player or something I never heard before you got a remember we were listening to like Elton John’s Philadelphia freedom foreigner renegade Styx evolution really much softer type of rock music but when Eddie hit it was on real and I’ve been a fan and his death really hit me to kind a hard you know for somebody that I didn’t even know but I just appreciate it so much
No, it's the phaser and pinch harmonics that create that sound. Also, it's not layering rhythm and leads. I can tell from their other videos they love when guitar and bass are distinctive. Eddie is great and who played it but those are the main elements. They also love a wet reverb sound.
The guitar is played through a MXR Phase 90! Its a chewy phaser pedal. And most of the old school guitar tones you like are from a driven Marshall or Fender amp.
One of the greatest debut albums ever ....please do a reaction/review of this whole album . Every song is GOLD. Hit the like button if you agree with this !!!
No one sounded like VH when VH broke out, matter of fact IMO nothing else to this day sounds like early VH. Eddie Van Halen or EVH is easily one of the most innovative guitarist ever to bless music. BTW, the guitar effect is a flanger.
@@sentenza5098 being a 2000s(2002) kid, I was introduced to guitar shredding with Whitesnake. Discovered VH later. These guys changed my life as a guitar player. Also, I'm glad that I'm not an American due to which, I never got into emo and stuffs like that.
That "tone" change at the second verse is when Eddie goes from back and forth from power chords to harmonics (both guitar picking techniques). And for the vocals, David Lee Roth is just wonderfully crazy. The whole band did their parts wonderfully and uniquely.
That wasn't exactly a bad guess if you haven't played guitar for very long but he isn't using harmonics there. Its just a slight palm mute and he gets that unique tone because he's Eddie mother fxxxxn VAN HALEN! He was awesome at rigging guitars for the tone/sound he wants.
A power chord isn’t a picking technique nor is a harmonic unless you’re on about pinch harmonics. A power chord is a root and a fifth in music theory sometimes adding an octave, a power chord is a chord lol
This is a highly effected guitar tone. Eddy used a phaser and/or flanger into modified amps. (if you really care, he was using one Marshal JTM45 with a large resistor across the output, run on a variac at 90 volts (instead of 120), INTO another Marshall JTM45)
Also, all albums before Nirvana Nevermind (or thereabouts - using that as a time reference only) was mastered for vinyl - so it all has a different sound you appear to like.
I don't hear phaser or flanger except at the beginning of the song. The main riff sounds pretty pure guitar into amp one. What makes it different though is that nowadays lots of technical guitarists especially have very processed tone without dynamics. No difference with if they are picking hard or softly. Not everyone of course, but that seems to be the trend nowadays.
They only mentioned the effect at the beginning of the song while the modulation effects were still being used, which is why I mentioned them. Now, with the lack of dynamics, we can actually blame Eddy from a much later time in his career - the Peavey 5150 - with all six gain stages engaged, the signal is overdriven into compression (which makes sense if you watch a high gain preamps waveform - it looks like the waveform out of a compressor.) That amp is one of the go-to amps of modern metal and hard rock.
Charisma and attitude, swagger are perfect words to describe David Lee Roth and Van Halen in general. you guys are awesome, thanks for consistently making great videos!
I love this! NON-guitar guys openly sharing their clear fascination for old school guitar mastery. Eddie V H tuned his guitar a half step down, added his famous “brown sound” distortion, then added a MXR Phaser guitar pedal. Then guitar was ran through one channel and reverb from that was panned through the other speaker. On top of all that, his Marshall was so loud it literally blew the hairs on his arms. Badass sound! You MUST hear the entire album. It’s like :38 long. Just short and blazing.
Sarah Michelle ; Is this phenomenon...like mid age Afro Americans never heard Heavy Metal before? I'm gonna start a channel: Why eggs are great food and so useful! (REACTION!!!). 5 million hits.
I just found these guys and can’t stop smiling! They are taking me back to the first time I heard these songs 45 years ago! You guys are awesome! Loving it!! Eddie and Dave were magic together!
Its called the brown sound. Natural, tight, bright. Over driven Marshall Plexy with a flanger. Been playing guitar all my life and this album is why. (40 yrs.).
You have nailed the language. This is the best Van Halen related video I have seen in a long time. Kickass observations. I want to hang out with these guys. It’s like a high school party.
You guys are hilarious man. Watching you two being blown away by awesome songs is so entertaining for some reason. Its been a while since I listened to Van Halen, now I'm gonna have to find my old albums. Hot for Teacher would definitely be a great song to do. The opening drums were made to sound like a Harley. Interesting fact- the guitar Eddie Van Halen is holding on the back cover to their second album is in the casket with Dimebag Darrell, the guitarist from Pantera (R.I.P.)
@@MarleneJonesCannon they did they didn't play rap and heavy metal was the s***. They did play black music they play Lionel Richie they didn't play a lot of 70 stuff will they actually did play The Doors they're from the 60s. What IS that guitar sound? THAT is called Eddie Van Halen. And that swagger and attitude in David Lee Roth's voice....you simply must watch them perform to get the full effect. I was in 8th grade when this album came out. It was legendary.
Historical note: In 1978, my brother and his friends went to Cincinnati to see Black Sabbath....and, ....this "newer" CA opener band called 'Van Halen'. My bro was 18...I was 13(mom didn't let me go). Upon returning....my brother says: While Sabbath was good...."that opening band was phenomenal!!!" The next day, he went out and bought the Van Halen 1 debut vinyl.....and returned home to let it rip..(on dad's turntable & speakers). He & I were mesmerized... "What are we hearing?" ...there were no videos back then, so I had to "imagine" this group...and; they vaulted to the top of my favorite bands (see ya Steve Miller, EJ, BTO....etc, etc....) Wow. A game-changer.
...ha! The only part of this story you might have a problem with is that there WERE VIDEOS back in the day....but not at our house. Black Sabbath...was popular...and that's the band my bro saw(VH opened). His comments were that 'Halen was energetic; guitarist awesome; frontman screamed alot.... and yes, within a month our local record store 'Dingleberry's' had the vinyl! Yep...we got it.
illinoisanthunder You're being sarcastic, right? Which part exactly sounds like bullshit? His brother went to a Sabbath concert and he didn't know who Van Halen was when they opened for Sabbath. He was blown away, because almost every Hard Rock fan was blown away, the first time they heard VH play. So, the brother immediately went out, bought the record and played for his little brother. Sounds like a pretty typical story to me. Nothing unbelievable or fantastic about it. And most importantly, the teller of the tale is not glorified in any way. He didn't discover VH by himself at a Sabbath concert. He didn't even go to the concert. His brother did. His mom made him stay home. One thing that is very typical of bullshit stories is that, they usually make the story teller look good. They are bullshitting you, to feed their iwn egos. A great story teller usually tells stories that are mostly the truth, with a maybe a few splashes of bullshit thrown in to add color. A great story teller knows that if he looks bad in the story, the story will usually be funnier and it will lend credibility the story. I, me, my stories typically contain a lot more elements of bullshit than, this guy, that guy and my brother stories contain. I love telling stories, so I know what I'm talking about.
you reminded me of one more thing, Sky! My brother now had the best vinyl in the household...so I was jealous of him..lol. I had to ASK to play his 'Halen album....for he feared I would "scratch" it. ;) Those were the days...
The way you guys reacted to this song was the same way people reacted when this album came out in 1978. It was groundbreaking. It was innovative. It was something that wasn't heard before. The Rock music world was shaken up when this album came out. I can see in previous comments how in detail the guitar sound was developed. And to this day Eddie Van Halen keeps experimenting with his sound. Every time a signature EVH amplifier comes out it comes with a new feature or a different setup. David Lee Roth to me is just the greatest Hard Rock Frontman of all time. He may not have the greatest voice but his swagger, stage presence and antics are one of a kind. That stage presence combined with Eddie Van Halen's guitar virtuosity made the perfect formula for success. You can tell I'm a HUGE Van Halen fan. Eddie is one of my greatest influences as a guitar player.
The Guitar tone was achieved by taking an OLD Marshall 100 watt head and cranking more voltage through it than it was rated for. It caused the amp to run at the edge of frying, which it did often. He had several that he would rotate in and out as he fixed them. No one had gone for this "Brown" sound before this. Eddie Van Halen was an innovator of the time. Now he makes amps that do this by design (EVH 5150 amp)
He actually reduced the voltage in the amp with the Variac rather than increasing it. In the early days he said he increased the voltage so that people trying to copy him would blow up their amps but in recent years he has admitted that he actually reduced the voltage.
I believe he underpowered the amp actually. Using the variac to lower the wattage. Also if I remember correctly a phase shifter is employed. I believe Eddie also tuned down a 1/2 step.
Dave is the man. A chauvinist to many, but that is how he is as an entertainer. Go big or go home type attitude. One of the greatest frontmen in Rock. Rest easy Eddie. Still cant believe you are gone.😭
DLR the ONLY frontman for halen! loved him as,a teenage girl, lol and love him now! ohhhhh those rocker discos! smell of pitchouli! comment about the voices is right, spot on but roth sure had the attitude lol
Anyone who reckons he's a chauvinist is completely missing how often he humorously puts himself down lyrically and in interviews ... one of the very few legendary rockers to specify frequently that they're attracted to highly intelligent women.
@EBGBeee oh I agree. I "get Dave" and his attitude. Just many think he is. Dude is way smarter than many think. I've heard "buffoon" often to describe him, but just Dave being Dave
Oh my goodness you guys somehow proved you're bigger geniuses than I thought you were. Picking up on David Lee Roth's more amateurish approach but recognizing that he uses his voice perfectly to suit the song and enhance it. To many more, professional singers, this song would be difficult to keep interesting. It's very repetitive and doesn't have an incredible range, but DLR makes it sound incredible. You guys fully understand music. Whatever education you were previously in need of has henceforth been complete. You are prepared to tackle anything.
You guys are so fun to watch, I have a grin on my face the whole time watching your reactions. I grew up listening to VH, I was obsessed with them! Saw them a number of times but most memorable was at the Garden in NYC, 1983. They did this song and yes, everyone had their fists in the air with the “Hey, hey hey!!” Unforgettable. They just don’t make music like this anymore. Anyway, just love your guys videos!! Thanks for the laughs in this brutal world we are now living in ✌️
You guys are the best. I can’t get enough of your channel!! Eddie Van Halen is an incredible guitar player. I have a feeling you would love all of Van Halens music!
Eddie's attack also changes the tone up. When you guys mention how it changes during that second verse, he's muting notes with his palm ("palm muting") and then not. He was also known for rolling his volume knob back slightly, which would also alter the tone. He was a master at rhythm dynamics. Great reaction, guys.
David Lee Roth is one of the great showmen and band frontpersons in rock - you have to see him perform live to fully appreciate the vocal delivery. The dude is 100% attitude and maximum swag, and really helped elevate arena rock from a performance to a show or even spectacle. Backed by stellar musicians they really were a revolution in the music of the day
He pretty much appropriated his style from Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas, but totally perfected it. IMO Freddy Mercury was also on that same level only without the acrobatics. There hasn't been too many that could control an entire stadium they way they could. Never to be replicated.
Hell yeah man ... since they were asking for some awesome older Van Halen after Ain't Talkin Bout Love, definitely Mean Street ... definitely Unchained for more flanger, also really like Atomic Punk and On Fire, Hear About It Later, So This Is Love...
Thanks for the reaction. Van Halen was pretty much the soundtrack to my life from the 8th - 10th grades in the early 80s, and this was my all-time favorite Van Halen song. RIP Eddie.
Let's not forget that there wouldn't have been 'those' VH choruses without MICHAEL ANTHONY. MA's backing vocals made those choruses POSSIBLE...he was/is FANTASTIC.
Dudes, that whole album is amazing. Please listen to the whole album. Eddie Van Halen used various effects to color his tone. But, the core of his tone was a guitar that he homemade, an old Marshall "plexy" turned all the way up, and a variac. A variac is a device where you can change the hundred twenty volt that comes out of the wall to something lower or higher. He set the variac somewhere between 90 and 100 volts. It's referred to as the brown sound. But it's not just about the magic of his tone it's also the magic of the man. Eddie Van Halen invented many guitar tricks that are now commonplace. He did for rock and metal what Jimi Hendrix did in the sixties. So when you hear these amazing ferocious guitar tones think about the fact that Eddie started in the late 70s. So everybody who comes after him owes him a great debt. The crazy thing is how wonderful the drumming and the bass is too. Obviously those are amazing too. And David Lee Roth's vocal styling was so full of humor and emotion and Swagger. Watch some old videos of DLR he would do crazy backflips and acrobatics on stage. Van Halen is four guys but they make it sound like 14. I think you will find that every song on Van Halen's debut album will give you chills down your spine.
Dead on. So much of his tone was not just the amp and effects, but it was the man. And his fingers. How he attacked the guitar strings at a given point in time. He could have all his gear and effects set the same and change the way he attacked, and change the tone completely.
Van Halen blew me away as a teenager in the early 80s. I’ll throw them in a bucket with Queen and Rush- there is no one that sounds anything like them.
The tone that Eddie got was some stuff he made, not stuff that was out. He actually took a voltage converter and plugged it into his amp and controlled the volume of the amp by regulating the voltage on it, and not to mention the advancements he made with his guitar alone.
Eddie bought an amp destined for the UK. The voltage there is 240v here in U.S. it's 120v. This created a low voltage situation. He liked the sound, bought a variac and the rest is history.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You... It sounds like this because this is Edward Van Halen's TONE. His tone is a mid-60’s 100 watt Marshall "Plexi" Super Lead Amp. But in Eddie's case, his was set up with a Variac Potentiometer which could be used to lower the voltage. That way he can play with all of the Amp's knobs set to 10 without blowing the amp or deafening everyone. That amp is famous for it's maxed volume distorted tone. Eddie figured a way to get that tone at a workable volume. The only effect that he used on that first album was an MXR Phase 90 pedal. Most Rock guitarists of the eighties wanted that tone, so it is only natural that the sound of a Marshall 100 watt Head represents the sound of that era. There were two primary guitars used on the album; 1975 Ibanez Destroyer and Eddie's self-built Frankenstein (the black and white striped guitar on the cover). On this song, he used the Frankenstein. The lead singer David Lee Roth was the most awesome, bad-ass Rock Star of the 1980's. He had and still has a shit-load of swagger. He wrote all of the lyrics, and as Eddie was a Guitar god, David Lee Roth proved to be the only one to ever write the proper lyrics around the most unconventional guitarist of all time. In late 2012, after many rounds of bracket-style voting administrated by Guitar World Magazine, Eddie Van Halen was voted the Greatest Guitarist of All Time. That does not mean he is... It's subjective. But Eddie did change the world! I would love to see your reaction to the combination of Eruption followed with Atomic Punk. Blown Minds will follow!
Flanger for the intro and throughout the song with the phaser added in the solos and the final section. But the secret to get near this tone is to put the delay before them all. Delay>flanger>phaser>distortion (a modded marshall in this case). Try that, you won´t regret!! Any distortion pedal that emulates a hot plexi would work.
The technique of the sound you dudes are hearing going back into the verse is called “palm muting.” It’s a technique where the “karate chop” side of the hand is laid across the strings near the bridge of the guitar (on the picking hand) and mutes the strings slightly to make them kinda “chunk out.” It’s kinda the sound of metal now - like Metallica’s “jub jub jub” sound. Depending on how far up the strings the hand is muting them, the tone can be more\less choked.
Classic Van Halen \m/!!! Eddie Van Halen remains one of the great guitarists of all time. His is a signature sound. And what can one say about "Diamond" David Lee Roth?
also, you immediately glommed onto David Lee Roth's secret as a frontman: he's just ALL charisma. he's not a bad singer, but he's just...charismatic and sells you his coolness.
YES YES YES. This was a great time. They were using effects, and as a guitar player EVH started a sound called " the brown sound". This song uses a phaser pedal. Cool sound that takes the notes and kinda sends them in a circle.
Eddies " brown sound" was pretty awesome but it should be noted that it was not centered around the phaser pedal alone. To me it is more a description of his entire guitar sound for at least 4 albums before it really evolved and took a turn along with guitar tech and Eddies playing itself.
This is my favorite reaction of all time...I watch this all the time as I really love to see you guys have so much fun listening to this fantastic song by my favorite group, Van Halen....RIP EVH.....
This is why I love watching these reaction videos. I remember being a kid, and my Uncle Jerry bringing this over when it was new. I had never heard anything like it before. Thanks for letting me relive that feeling again. I just remember having so much fun listening to Van Halen when they were new, and your reaction sent me back. And if you really want to know about David Lee Roth's swagger, check out the photo on the back of the album. That is all you need to know about Diamond Dave. Track one from this album is Running with the Devil, and that changed everything about the harder side of rock for me. The needle dropped, and I couldn't believe my ears. Eddy Van Halen changed the game as it hadn't really been changed (in my opinion) since Jimi Hendrix. Keep it up guys, love what you do.
I love you 2 dudes and you guys always have funny and smart comments about the music that you review; I have to say this is hands down the best REACTION I have ever seen - mainly because it matched my initial reaction to hearing that very same song in 1977 as a 13 year old boy who was starting to play the guitar to be more like my father. I've been HOOKED - on both guitars and Van Halen - ever since. Kudos to you guys to totally get the infectious pure JOY this brought to the ears of so many kids back in the '70's. We had never heard anything even close to this prior to Van Halen I coming out. This sound, the guitar tone, a singer mimicking Al Jolson and old blues greats with long hair and doing kung-fu moves in a heavy metal band - back in the day - this was INSANE. PS: I get the same feeling you guys showed in this video every time I play that track. it has never left me. Thank you both for putting a huge smile on a 54 year old mans face, and for all that you do. God bless and all the Best in 2019 and Beyond.

I'm already a subscriber because of your comments on some other songs... KEEP IT UP!
Guys. In my opinion. The reason it sounds so good, and others might disagree since music is subjective. You have EVH who is a killer guitar player. Modified strat guitar ==> Phase pedal ===> tube amp cranked ===> mic'd into a studio analog tape machine recording all of the intriments as well and singing. David Lee Roths singing is just cool. This was an epic time for hard rock.
No one sounded like Eddie before, in 78 disco was king , punk and new wave was taking over, all the greats like Zeppelin, Sabbath , Deep Purple we're in decline ..And than the Mighty Van Halen kicked everyone in the ass! And brought hard rock and metal to a new level, whether they're metal or not they created a legion of Eddie wannabes and raised the bar
They don't realize though that VH created that "sound" they're used to hearing so much, once they listen to more VH it'll become apparent that VH are the creators and progenitors of that sound
Here are some metal songs that YOU will like. Black Sabbath - The Wizard - Simple song with amazingly creative drums Megadeth - Hook in Mouth - Intricate musicianship, constantly building, impressive transitions Alice in Chains - Would? - Intense mood, best vocal performance by the band

Its both.
If it were that simple? It's the style, tone, the writing and a mix of a band. Try putting all that together. Not an easy feat.

And don't forget the variac which took the 120 voltage of the plexi down to something like 60. Much like a dead 9 volt battery in a distortion pedal....the best crounch sound .
greekfreak1980 Note, several of the songs on Van Halen 1 were played with his Ibanez Destroyer which later was cut up to make the show guitar.
"Brown sound"
you killed me at "cranked to eleven"
Not sure how else tapping would be done if not 2-handed ?
Rest in Peace Eddie. A true innovator. A once in a generation talent.
Maybe multiple generations
@@I_amTurok You are correct Sir
Music today and what it is looks like it might never catch up
He also customized his Marshalls,, and also used reverb with the phaser,, Raw and Cranked all the way up,,
@@kirklandraab1999 Your previous comment is very apropos given he started out as a drummer.
He used an Echoplex , they don't make them anymore.
@Scott Warsing they still make echoplex's...
You can buy Dunlop ones new, there are boutique recreations and of course the original units. People are also still making hand wired versions to the same spec.
So what do you mean?
You know you're semi-good looking, is maybe the best line ever.
Another great one is Springsteen's "You ain't a beauty, but, hey, you're alright."
From Hayseed Dixie “The Perfect Woman”: “I wouldn’t take her home to Momma, but Momma ain’t home tonight.”
Earl Powell shit man the whole line you think you're really cooking you better find yourself a friend. Two six's are better then a ten.all day on the road.
In Panama he sings, "I gotta an on ramp running through my bedroom". He has always been able to turn a phrase.
I prefer 'non-ugly'
As a guitar player of 35 years (playing since I was a kid), I can tell you that the guitar playing and sound on this album was revolutionary. It was the biggest change in rock playing and tone since Jimi Hendrix a decade prior. It completely changed the game and rock music, guitar design and amplifier design into the 80s and beyond.
That is pretty much right yep. Eddie Van Halen pretty much everyone want to be a guitar player.
Shawn Lane played better when he was 16... 2 years before Van Halen 1 dropped...eddies great tho if not a tad bit overrated
I am also a guitar player and have be en for 8 years and I disagree. Black Sabbath, Boston and Mick Ronson all made some incredibly groundbreaking guitar tones.
PDX Guitar Freak roger that a big game changer I lost my shot when I 1st heard them just like later on when G&R’s hit the scene
PDX Guitar Freak it's a fact, EVH is without a doubt the most influential guitarist since Hendrix
I agree. The reverb played a lot in the total sound, in my opinion.
To be fair, that was the absolute low point of Ozzy period Sabbath
Black Sabbath won the test of time ? Not!!!
Also Eddie would just adjust the volume on his bridge pickup for different tones.
UnFUCKINbelievable!!! EVH is such a legend!!!
David Lee Roth is the definition of rock swagger
@phosphorescent wave Who cares of how he sing now?
He was the greatest frontman, showman, entertainer of the world.
And he was great on his time. Plant's tone sucks to me.
@phosphorescent wave they made a van hallen film?
Facts
The sound is seriously called the "Brown sound" and Eddie Van Halen created it, before he was famous
my thought exactly, that plexi marshall head, the flanger, the rest evh...
i never said brown, note , so u got wrong dude, i know everthing about eddie, personally dont care who likes my grammar, this aint school bro..
Brown sound. It's a tube screamer with the middle frequencies"scooped" out.
www.roland.co.uk/blog/guitarists-brown-sound/
Brown Sound. Billy Gibbons created it before Eddie was born. lol listen to the outro to La Grange.
This
monokhem Led Zeppelin had already hit the radio waves long before Van Halen did but hey props to Led Zeppelin too.
monokhem I didn’t know Led Zeppelin and Van Halen had the same style and sound. My bad. I must’ve missed that.
monokhem, Van Halen did NOT sound like Led Zeppelin.
Almost like the reaction when we heard it for the first time, and i am 56 years old.

Check out JJ GREY and Mofro - Woman
RIP Eddie Van Halen.
Guitar Sound: 1% Equipment, 99% Eddie.
And Drop D tuning?
Actually it a was a phaser. not a flanger., and it was a thing called an echoplex tape repeater. But just the same, like you said 97% Eddie.
It’s a phaser, Anyone who is musically inclined will know that.
@@ForgedDr3ams Was about to say the same.

The tone is called EDDIE VAN HALEN
Ed Collins this is what missing today real music feel sorry for the kids now
Hahaha that IS the best way to put it Ed.
No, it's the phaser and pinch harmonics that create that sound. Also, it's not layering rhythm and leads. I can tell from their other videos they love when guitar and bass are distinctive. Eddie is great and who played it but those are the main elements. They also love a wet reverb sound.
AKA "The Brown Sound"
Phazer delay and palm mute*
The guitar is played through a MXR Phase 90! Its a chewy phaser pedal. And most of the old school guitar tones you like are from a driven Marshall or Fender amp.
Henri the Horse with delay!
Henri the Horse ... Dont forget about the flanger!
and tuned to Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb for that extra kick.
yep!
Henri the Horse but this was through a peavey 5150
The guitar sounds good because Eddie Van Halen is playing it. :-)

Frank Marinucci Eddie Van Halen used a flanger a lot, bit the classic sound here is primarily an MXR Phase 90 phaser effect.
Dad: turn this off
Me: why
Dad: we have a bigger speaker downstairs
I can't wait enought when they get UNCHAINED
This comment hit me hard, because my dad introduced me to Van Halen with this song when i was a little kid.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣👍
@@sentenza5098 being a 2000s(2002) kid, I was introduced to guitar shredding with Whitesnake. Discovered VH later. These guys changed my life as a guitar player. Also, I'm glad that I'm not an American due to which, I never got into emo and stuffs like that.
Omg I lol so hard bc this is totally me....if the neighbors can’t hear, it’s not loud enough. 🤘🏼
That "tone" change at the second verse is when Eddie goes from back and forth from power chords to harmonics (both guitar picking techniques). And for the vocals, David Lee Roth is just wonderfully crazy. The whole band did their parts wonderfully and uniquely.
Sometimes it was like he was two guitarists. Phenomenal. And he made it look effortless.
You think you know what you’re talking about but you couldn’t be more wrong when it comes to how he’s playing that verse riff.
@@1sonavabitch One of the first times you heard a flanger too. Some God given talent with Eddie - you can't teach this.
He uses both phaser and flanger
MXR Phase 90 is the effect he used on this one I believe, through his modified Marshall.
One of the greatest debut hard rock albums. Short songs with a punk attitude but also plenty of melody. The vocals suit the music 100 %.
Ian Sharp absolutely! After that album, they seemed to grow less and less edgy. It is my favorite.

Its called the brown sound. Natural, tight, bright. Over driven Marshall Plexy with a flanger. Been playing guitar all my life and this album is why. (40 yrs.).
Great to read the right answer for their question instead of pure idolatry or an ignorant answer disguised as pure idolatry.
You have nailed the language. This is the best Van Halen related video I have seen in a long time. Kickass observations. I want to hang out with these guys. It’s like a high school party.

DuncanMetal spot on! I’ve watched this one a few times already, you guys are fun!
Oh man wow! RIP DD
Eddie changed the sound of rock guitar. When I heard it in 78 it changed everything for me.
It changed everything PERIOD.
He definitely had an impact on music. That's why Michael Jackson used him on Beat It because MTV didn't play "Black" music at the time.

You’re right... in 1978, that guitar sound was GAME CHANGING!
You guys are so diverse. I love that you touch multiple genres! Keep em coming.
What IS that guitar sound?
THAT is called Eddie Van Halen.
And that swagger and attitude in David Lee Roth's voice....you simply must watch them perform to get the full effect.
I was in 8th grade when this album came out. It was legendary.
this came out in the late 70's!!!!! this just shows how amazing they were/are at this time!!! NO ONE sounded like them. Period great reaction
Saint Echo , You are dead on. I’m 52 years old. I felt the same way way back then.
ah man..when vh came out..world of mouth was better than the internet..everybody said the same thing ( man you gotta hear this guy)
"because people aren't cool anymore" NO TRUER WORDS SPOKEN!
That, and I'm pretty sure he used a phaser a lot. Also back then most guitarists aren't tuning down, so everything sounds a lot more natural.
Anthony Kerr didn't he tune down? By a half step at least?
To have that kind of money....
“Foreplay/Long Time” by the iconic Boston
You guys are too cool. What a channel and what a personality. Very refreshing to experience something unique and new.
Dave is the man. A chauvinist to many, but that is how he is as an entertainer. Go big or go home type attitude. One of the greatest frontmen in Rock.

The opitamy of American Rock and Roll frontman!!

DancesWithWerewolves The muting was so fresh and innovative at the time.
Mario M true... than trash metal came into the scene
David Lee Roth is one of the great showmen and band frontpersons in rock - you have to see him perform live to fully appreciate the vocal delivery. The dude is 100% attitude and maximum swag, and really helped elevate arena rock from a performance to a show or even spectacle. Backed by stellar musicians they really were a revolution in the music of the day
Perfectly said
He pretty much appropriated his style from Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas, but totally perfected it. IMO Freddy Mercury was also on that same level only without the acrobatics. There hasn't been too many that could control an entire stadium they way they could. Never to be replicated.
My favorite Van Halen song , saw them in 1980 at 16 ❤ RIP Eddie 🙏
Diamond Dave has more charisma than any other singer. He is the MAN!
Duane Vigue Dave's energy and stage presence and Sammy's voice would make the ultimate frontman
Van Halen - "Mean Street" - It's incredible, one of Eddie's best moments on guitar.
Hell yeah man ... since they were asking for some awesome older Van Halen after Ain't Talkin Bout Love, definitely Mean Street ... definitely Unchained for more flanger, also really like Atomic Punk and On Fire, Hear About It Later, So This Is Love...

Back in the day he was the best frontman out their. Michael Anthony carried the high notes for him. But frontman he was the best back then
Thanks for the reaction.
Yep, Michael Anthony is so underrated. DLR had to pitch his voice in his solo albums to kinda get those choruses.
Yes, Michael was a very big part of Van Halen. Those high background vocals are killer along with his bass.
He doesn't get enough credit. May not be the best bass player, but one of the best background/harmony singers
Eddie also sang backups. But damn Mike belts it out
👍👍
Sargeist 666 Did he not learn from Les Paul himself.
Guys when you listened to Van Halen do Van Halen Hot For Teacher it got the drums and the guitar. 🎸 Omg great!!!
Hot For Teacher would be an AWESOME song to review!!!

Van Halen blew me away as a teenager in the early 80s. I’ll throw them in a bucket with Queen and Rush- there is no one that sounds anything like them.

Charisma and Swagger - in the dictionary has a picture of David Lee Roth
When Eddie is playing, its immediately identifiable as Eddie. The same for Santana, Stevie Ray and some other greats.
Jerry Cantrell, Mick Mars, Hendrix, oh man the list not huge but certainly distinctive
I'd like to add Dime to this list
This became a name your favorite guitarist list
Zave Ares Joe Satriani, Gary Moore.
Just to add to the list. I don’t see these two on all time best lists, and I don’t know why
Johnny Thunders, Jerry Garcia, Billy Gibbons,. Wayne Krammer
Hivolt Arc and people spent decades trying to replicate it. I wonder what is worth more, that amp or that guitar
240v in UK.
great for boiling an electric kettle quickly, not so great if you accidentally touch something live.
Chichikov thank you!! I wasn't sure.
You guys would love Hot for teacher by Van Halen I'd say.
Edit: If you can, please react to the video, it is utterly hilarious
oh man, they'd lose it on that drum riff lol
Hot for Teacher should have been the first Van Halen song. By far.
I was about to say they should listen to Hot For Teachers. They would be screaming “FIRE!!!!!!!!!”.
Also panana by van halen
HELL YEAH!

I never got around to thanking you for the additional information on Eddie's very straightforward rig used here. Thanks Bro!
This whole album is insane. Best VH album ever.
You're absolutely right about that buddy! They were very ahead of their time...Love them!!!
@@fire777ish yup. the first one and fair warning tied for me. the first 4 VH albums are all stone classics.
Living Colour's "Cult of Personality," let us know if you have heard it, and if not, please react to it! (and even if you have, do a review!) 😉
World... These are 2 men opening their ears and minds to...
VAN HALEN. They have 'FOUND' an iconic and pioneer band of
Rock and Roll...
I love it. I felt the same thing when I was 14 and heard for the first time listening to it.
Definitely check out Hot for Teacher, the solo (which he winged) is a scorcher, and the drum intro is one of the best of all time
The drum solo at the beginning will have George screaming fire for sure.
theicedevil yep, right after he realizes that it’s not a motorcycle lol
Kymberlyn Reed best frontman ever!
Lucas Rodriguez of course
yeah Hot For Teacher would be fun for you, and so would Panama.
also, you immediately glommed onto David Lee Roth's secret as a frontman: he's just ALL charisma. he's not a bad singer, but he's just...charismatic and sells you his coolness.
Nicholas Romig,.... their Earlier stuff is their best stuff!
Eric Beich agree. But, on this song the phaser is really noticeable.
This is my favorite reaction of all time...I watch this all the time as I really love to see you guys have so much fun listening to this fantastic song by my favorite group, Van Halen....RIP EVH.....
You're reaction brings me back to the first time I heard this tune. LOVE IT! Van Halen- Mean Street
Fair Warning is one of my ALLTIME favs too!
you mean Dirty Movies
a very good deep track. very good
UNCHAINED!!!!!!! It will blow you away 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿”come on Dave, give me a break”will crack you up!!!!
This, more than anything for VH 2nd song
Came here to say Unchained
My favorite Van Halen song. Props! Rest in Peace Eddie. #guitarlegend.
Actually it was 78
Yes! Their reaction reminds me of me hearing it for the first time as a young teen in 1979, changed my life.
@@terrycrotts2522 you are correct! I stand corrected....I was 14 years old then so the years, the music, the shows all blend together just a little bit lol!
And yes, "Diamond" David Lee Roth (vocalist), was all swagger and attitude...
Arley Simpson he was the Michael Jackson of 80s metal.
lobserve1 Circus clown attached to Van Halen, lol...
Dr Rockso
HOT FOR TEACHER OR UNCHAINED!!!!!!! YOU DUDES ARE AWESOME!!! HELPIN ME GET BACK INTO MUSIC THE RIGHT WAY!!!
OMG you dudes are the best! I love your comments about this song. I've been listening to Ain't Talking since the album came out, and after all these years, here you come to add more fun and very perceptive comments about the song and the band. So cool! I'm already a subscriber because of your comments on some other songs... KEEP IT UP!
Great reaction guys! Would like to see Hot for teacher by them aswell
hell yeah, gotta watch the video with that one lol
No digital bullshit back then.
Hoosier Daddy not a strat, not a phase.
Eddie was great at setting up the tone for his guitar as well as the whole timbre of the songs.
Here are some metal songs that YOU will like.
Black Sabbath - The Wizard
- Simple song with amazingly creative drums
Megadeth - Hook in Mouth
- Intricate musicianship, constantly building, impressive transitions
Alice in Chains - Would?
- Intense mood, best vocal performance by the band
Yeah, the Wizard is awesome
Anyone who requests Hook In mouth has instant credibility 🤘🏻 PMRC!!!!
wizard is so underrated!!!
Would? Is amazing
Mamma, I'm Coming Home - Ozzy
Stoned/Down in a Hole - Alice in Chains
Coma White/Tourniquet - Marilyn Manson
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynard or Shinedown (highly recommended)
Frickin Eddie Van Halen! The greatest rock guitarist of all time... He changed the way guitar players viewed playing. He was an alien.
You guys hit it dead on. David Lee Roth SWAG and Eddie completely unique guitar sound.
You can even see Roth's SWAG pictured right there on the album cover, too.
