These two models are still dominating the market now.
The guitars are decent too.
Just ordered the 50s strat in red
lol
decent??????????
@@cmmnsenserules4339 Decent is an understatement
0:30 It's amazing what you can do with a voice, a guitar and a pair of flip-flops.
1. It's called an Ashtray bridge because it originally had a cover on it, but players used to take it off and use it as an Ashtray.
2. It sounds different because the magnetic qualities of the Pickup would react with the metal of the bridge, making it sound sharper.
***** number 2 is a load of bull with regards to Fender instruments. Leo Fender devised the ashtray bridges for his instruments to hide the "inner workings" of the instrument that he thought weren't as aesthetically-pleasing to players i.e. the saddles and pickups. the horse shoe-surround on Rickenbacker 4000 basses, and lap steels before it from the same period did in fact have an effect on the magnetic pull of the pickup and that's where this misinformation stems from.
IronOrePickaxe stop missinforming people
IronOrePickaxe It was originally designed to allow strumming without muting the strings with ones palm. Soon thereafter, everyone learned that palming was cool, and they needed an ashtray for the weed they were smoking. Problem solved.
Lester Nester In the 50s they smoked cigs not weed
@@phantomlord5707 I can attest via both my father and uncle that they weren't smoking just cigs in the 50s.
I dont get why they mainly focussed on high gain sounds, the guitar sounds great clean and mildly overdriven!
It's the sound of rock and roll brah
Stevjamusic, I understand your take on the video. For a more comprehensive review, more cleans would give you an idea if it were capable of your particular tone requirements. I watch their videos because I play at higher gain settings and I know I will be able to get an idea if a guitar or other piece of gear will satisfy my playing style. Like, I wouldn’t have guessed a classic style Tele could generate the gain tones they demonstrated. I now am actually considering this guitar.
Words right out of my mouth. It isn’t Them it’s Rob
Obviously a pedal. On the zeppelin cover it was correct. Jimmy Page played with a lot lot of gain.
a couple of dummies..................😝
"It's like Sex made of Wood"
- Rob Chapman on the Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster
May 29 2011
Revisiting a review of this era just now gave me such an immense fit of laughter and joy!
Priceless.🥰
Much love lads!
Cheers!
✌🤟🖖❤🔥
For anyone considering this guitar rest assured, it is well worth the money. The fascination with "American Made" Fenders is somewhat misplaced. As a former owner of a 64 Telecaster purchased in 1964 and sold in 2005 for almost 60 times it's original price, I went out a couple years back to replace it with a new Tele. I checked out a couple of American Standards(nice guitars) and then came across the Classic Vibe. It just felt familiar and I walked out of the store with it. I did change the bridge pickup to a SD hotrails, but that's it. I don't perform so it is no big deal to have Squier on the headstock. It's light and it plays beautifully and that's really all I could want. I have several more expensive guitars but this little gem is just fun to play.
@Minimalism I've not heard that, but the Classic Vibe Strats are a great platform to modify. The first mod would be to replace the block with brass or steel. Make sure it is the right size though as some of the CV Strats have thinner bodies. If you are not a trem guy, then just deck the bridge and put a nice piece of hard maple behind the original block. Tone and sustain will improve significantly. I would also replace all the pots and switch. For $100.00 you can put in an Obsidian Wire Strat solder less harness and Bob's your uncle. It comes complete with a Switchcraft jack
You'll have a great sounding and playing Strat for a fraction of the cost of it's American cousin
are u retarded..... he said telecaster..... no block or trem...... @@Taylort3b
has anyone noticed the almost empty bottle of jack?
Ethan Holliday it was the first ive noticed
Oh yeah. Look around on other vids. I may drop off a few nice scotch’s. They’ll make it on the vids !
Prop
Moreover, it changes position at 10:35 ;-)
in fact i have noticed the bottle but not that it is nearly empty.. haha you have a good eye.. or you are an expert in jack Daniels..
Lee It's called an Ashtray because Teles used to come with a metal cover over the bridge plate. People used to remove these because it prevented palm muting. The covers were then used as ashtrays.
Awesome I did not know that
Fender facts!! :D
Didn't he say that?
I've wanted the tele for like 6 months, and seeing this review makes me want it even more
Brawler 620 I’m stuck between this and a G-400 SG Epiphone😬
Nick, I have both. There both g fantastic guitars! You NEED bother.
big shot is my favorite band. you guys saved my life
Rob is right about the tele.
I used to work in a guitar store and the classic vibe tele and especially the jazzmaster were better sounding and feeling than some fenders.
And they are really light
the reason they called it an ashtray style as the original guitars, came with a cover, that guitarist pulled off and put on top of their amps and them used it as an ashtray (instead of putting the cig between the strings and head stock
The Tele is gorgeous, it really catches the feeling, the brightness and the dynamic of a good Fender.
The Strato, not as good...I mean, good enough for 300 pounds, but it "looks" better than it sounds. It's tiny and it lacks the "clack" attack you would expect.
I have the classic vibe strat, it's a great guitar and soo much better than the bullet strats/affinity strats and in some ways even better than a mexican strat
ChristianIce Really? Because the strat had the quintessential snap and bell-like tone like a vintage one would. In fact, I'd say the Tele was a lot brighter than 50s Teles are. It sounded more like a 60s Tele.

You can always change de pups!
The Strat sounded f awesome and I came here to check out the Tele. You need to clean your ears!
16:03 RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - READYMADE (gotta love the fact that chappers played a song by the peppers)
I'm not familiar with that one, is it from the earlier albums?
will schaumann No, the one before the latest called "stadium arcadium" from 2006.
also, the guy with the flip flops did a really good job on imitating the intro of Good Times Bad Times. Supprisingly good.
Second note, does anyone know the name of the tune played at 4:46? I'd really love to learn it
***** That's one of Rob's tunes, called "Majesty". He has a lesson for it on his channel.
***** But it's also a song by haiden pantierre called Telescope. They stole Rob's riff
What is often called ash-tray, is the pickup cover for the bridge pickup delivered with the old 50s ons.Almost everybody used to remove the cover and used it as an ash-tray on stage. So this might be the reason, you hear some people speaking of an ash-tray design bridge on a tele.
Did anyone realize that the video length was 19:51 and the guitar are 50's classic vibes XD
Omg genius here
Joshua Forest xD
Haha
I'm so proud of you for figuring that out. I can only imagine what your mother thinks
Bought the CV Tele last week (Feb 2021): still the same price: £339. The brass saddles have been replaced with steel ones and they are not staggered for intonation so I'm going to change the bridge/saddles out for a Wilkinson. Will likely swap out the electrics too but keeping the stock pickups for now...
Tabs for flip-flops pleeeeeeezeee.
the basic rythym is flip flip flop flip flop flop
the last flop has a 1 second delay on the actual record, but I'll let it fly
Bought one and it has become my no 1 guitar!
the tele or the strat?
Hi Jona, the Telecaster. For the money it really is a great guitar!
I'm also a profound flip-flop drummer.
I own both, but my Tele is a pine body - heavy. Much prefer the Tele on the neck pickup over the Strat - gorgeous sounding and absolutely awesome neck.
Andy Partridge of XTC plays squire telecasters.
i bought the antique blonde version...then bought a cv50s neck and put it on my Squier 51...then i made a tele out of mahogany and bought another cv50s neck and put it on that...these tele cv50s are some of the best guitar deals out there
I actually think the pickups on these models are really good.
The Squier line has come a long way since the late 70's early 80's. I tried both the Strat and the Tele and I couldnt believe how much better the quality is over the older models. The biggest improvement is in the fret wire. The old ones were left pretty much unfinnished and were so sharp that when you ran your hand up and down the neck, it nearly cut you. These new ones are done so nice and smooth that theyre at least as good as the mexican ones. The Squiers are a super bargain these days!
just bought yesterday that Telecaster, same color...simply amazing...i even tested it at the store against some american teles...and it was just better...it looks amazing, i feel like grabbing it every time i look at it...i also tested the Strat ClassicVibe..also amazing..i just didnt want tremolos anymore and i NEEDED that Tele looks!
Picked up a used Blonde Classic Vibe 50's for $100 a few years back. Love that guitar! It just plays so well and I dig that Tele sound and style. Incredible guitar for the money.
Plays a Chili Peppers song, Happens to be the only Chili Peppers song played on a Les Paul
Nishan Shrestha Timestamp?
yeah
Whoo-aah
Actually not. John also used Les Paul on Fortune Faded, Knock Me Down and most likely other Mother's Milk songs.
came here just for this comment
I own 2 of the Tele Vibes. Butterscotch and Blonde. They are great guitar. The action, neck, and sound are wonderful. The pickups are really good too, but I installed Seymour '54 Vintage in one, and Bare Knuckle "The Boss" in the other. I use them for gigs, recording and practice. They are awesome and a fantastic price.
Surprisingly amazing for ~300-400 bucks. Probably the most solid electric guitars you will find for that price.
Love that little guitar part at 4:40 I need to learn that pronto 😝👍
Mr. Captain & Mr. Chapman, what else can I ask for? These two guys fit each other... Perfectly... Great vid...
its been only five years and rob looks like he is 20 years older now
Or simple karma or "genetics" for the materialists among us. As Rob loves playing and that doesn't cause stress, although he may be working like a demon "behind the scenes" unbeknownst to the public and this may be taking it's toll on 'im' - aah..
I think he looks a lot better nowadays! Probably due to the healthy (maybe vegan?) livestyle he lives
lol!
Needs to shave and grow out his hair again lol
I love this Tele, I have 3 (a GC special HH, a Squier Affinity BSB and MIM Fender) already, but would love to get a CV50s. The vintage tuners have the "Safety Post" feature. Great reviews from Capt & Chappers!
5 fucking years... Oh my fucking god
6...
I love my classic vibe tele. I just used it this week for some recordings I did for my channel. The thing is Exceptional!
A real guitarist wouldn't care about the name on the headstock.
If Jimmy page picked up two telecasters, one squier and the other fender, I bet he could make both of them sound the same.
Keep it wholesome!
Think of instruments like having percent stat boosts. a regular guy who sounds like 100 will sound 130 of a squier(30%) and 150 on a fender (50%) where a professional who sounds 1000 will sound 1300(30%) on a squier and 1500 on a fender(50%). of course its more complicated than this but the point is the quality of the instrument makes more of a difference to those of a higher level of playing.
very doubtful
idiot...
Agree. It’s the driver not the car.
Also the amp is where the majority of your tone comes from anyway. A cheap guitar in a good amp will sound better than an expensive guitar through a shite amp.
5:50 Actually, fellas, it called an 'ashtray' bridge because for a long time there was a metal cover that went over the saddles/pickup on Esquires and Teles. That piece *did* look like (and could be used as) an ashtray. I had a 70s Strat that had a similar chrome bridge-cover, too.
this CV Telly is really cool... I totally agree with you guys... I got mine a while ago and love it a lot... Looks classic and sounds splendid... :-)
Ah yeah, and really entertaining nice vid... :-)
Yup. I just came home with a new Classic Vibe Tele a couple of hours ago and I'm now a HUGE fan. I've owned over 50 guitars in the last 35 years but this is my first ever Telecaster and I'm sold. I always just thought of Telecasters as country chicken-pickin' guitars, but I was *so* mislead...
I know you guys are rockers, but don't you think it might have been better to run the test through a twin or a deluxe?
*****
I don't know if that's all true. I have one and I find them to be outstanding in their quality and workmanship. If you go to TDPRI you will see that they are owned by players all over the world and most have other top end guitars and amps.
*****
Sorry, I misunderstood. Yeah, they are a budget guitar. I love mine through a compressor and a Cube 60.
***** What do you know about the Chinese copies that are out there?
***** I saw a video on here in a couple of slots that talked about how great these guitars were. Just curious if you know anything. Most people I know think they are crap.
***** The Classic Vibe Squiers are made in China and believe it or not are way better than the Mexican made Fenders.
Just bought a Tele CV! Can't wait to play it! Sounds great!
you guys are awesome you s show everything about all guitars and pedals . other youtubers some of them show shit videos but some are ok . but yous show all the videos will help me figure out what to buy . thank you
I have this tele, from this year(as these were made in China with brass saddles), and it is amazing. It definitely punches above its price point
I was mayonazed by this.
I have the stratocaster. It is a very well made, incredible playing guitar. The tinted maple neck and fretboard is very smooth and comfortable. The quality control is amazing. The pickups are great sounding. It is my main guitar. I would eventually like to get the telecaster. They are $349.00 in the U.S. or at least from Musician's Friend. Where I got mine from.
A Tele has a unique and distinctive sound even more than a Strat. If you want that sound you HAVE to get a Tele IMO.
Really like both these guitars, can any of you suggest what is better for blues/rock? Really loving the Tele and the strat!
Great Tele type for a ridiculous price. More clean sounds please, you're missing an important part of the Tele vibe, mates. 😁
It's a thing you would usually do on a strat just to make it sound stratty, but when you try to strum say the D string (if in standard tuning) and you do a downstroke, and make sure whatever finger is on the string, covers the G, B, and E strings, to make sure it stops them from ringing, but gives you that noise.
17:30 chapman plays hendrix. oh man
seeing the screen shot at 2:00 makes me happy. i own the fiesta red strat, and im going in town right now to get the tele that rob is holding.
i like the tele more than the strat...
Nice video as usual ! On what amp did you play and what pedal did you use ? Intersting to know to really figure out the sound quality!
Drinking game: every time Lee touches his nose, drink!
The bottle of Jack is right next to him XD
That tele sounds MEAN!!!!!! Especially with that gain!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Got to get me some of that Fiest red Classic Vibe Strat ass.
Cheers on playing the Reef song. One of my favorite grooves!
11:08 Little did he know...
lmao
i always notice the pick alot in all your videos, do you use a heavy gauge or do you have a heavy hand, or is it just the camera mic?
rob has no hair :O
The term "ashtray" bridge actually came from a clunky chrome-plated steel cover that fit over the narrow vertical steel pieces you see on either side of the bridge pick up. It totally covered the pickup and the three brass saddles. In the 50s, somebody at Fender thought it looked cool or made a good resting platform for your picking hand. Legend has it, that players when rehearsing, took off these somewhat unnecessary covers, turned them up-side-down and used them for ashtrays....hence "ashtray" bridge.
lmao is that chappers? dude rob, dont cut you hair man you look so much better with dreads bro XD
I got a cv 50's strat and 50's tele I upgraded the tele to have a humbucker and wired it upside down like Keith Richards, and I got a cv 50's strat to use whenever I play as Ronnie wood , both have been reliced and both sound great. They 're great for the price ($390) and great looks and sounds I love these two guitars they helped me in saving for a fender silver face amp, if you guys want a 50's style strat or tele I suggest you get these two and you still have enough money to get a hot rod deville or even a Princeton reverb
Whose watching in 2017!!!
Ronan White hello from 2018
Had no idea these guys were doing this back then. Lee hasn't changed except he plays wicked now. Awesome time travel
Almost 2019 and I’m watching for the first time. Just now discovered the CV 50’s Tele. Thinking I’m wanting one.
Hello there, I think the most important reason of the sound of bridge position of a Telecaster is the brass bottom plate of the pickup !!! Thanks...!!!!
as an american, i say chappers can play circles around john mayer.
Don't know about that one
Bahaha...yea right!!!
As an American, bullshit.
jordan louie I'd rather listen to John Mayer though. Rob is shred shred shred
Is John Mayer good? Maybe. Would I rather listen to someone jam their finger up my cat's butt? Definitely.
Thanks to Rob Champus for such brilliant playing. I just bought this guitar yesterday but if I had not heard what Rob did with it I would never have bought it. Been playing for over 40 years and this is an unbelievably sweet guitar and an absolute steal for the money. It is truly an amazing Guitar. Thanks for the great demo guys! You convinced me to buy one!! Thanks again, Steve!
Dude Rob lost a lot of weight
It is called an ashtray because the bridge came with a metal cover that was used as an ashtray mainly in clubs and session rooms, etc. The most expensive Fender come with this cover.
yes. infact, i compared it to a mexi fender, american standard, and an american deluxe at the store and it held its own to all of them! playing it right now actually
Intro alone is worth a thumbs up. Nicely done.
man can Chappers really wail!!!!! he can make any guitar sound amazing!!! I honestly believe having an amazing amp is more important than the name on the headstock of a guitar
I agree, sounded great, and would love to see a full cover of the tune!
Rob, I'm really starting to love Telecasters because of your videos. I'm considering buying one but the lead guitarist of my band says that I need to get a guitar with a humbucker because we play alternative rock. Do you consider this for tones used by bands like Pearl Jam? Hoping for your response, thanks!
Bottom line, as a life-long "Fender Guy", and having slogged through a lot of years of "what are they doing?", "what were they thinking?" and "why can't they just do ____?", I gotta tell ya, THIS is the return to golden era for Fender for the 1st time since the fifties and the sixties.
Their 2 best lines, period, regardless of price point, or bells and whistles, are available for sale right now:
The 2012/14 American Vintage Series, and the Squier Classic Vibe/ Vintage Modified Series (I truly consider the CV and VM as one initiative.)
The CV and VM lines are nearly all wonderful, with the CV 50 Strats the GLORIOUS cleans of,he VM Surf Strat and the (2013+ traditional) VM Jaguars reigning over the lot.
And literally EVERY offering in the stunning, stellar and completely spot-on re-creations of the current American Vintage series is a masterpiece.
Everything else in their catalog, now, before, and possibly after, is unequal, redundant, half steps and sideways changes for no better results; frequently at less attractive prices.
Seriously, these are the two best product lines Fender have produced in the last 40 years. And I've owned samples of much of the rest in between now and then.
Here's hoping they realize this truth, build in it, grow it, but PROTECT IT!
Don't let the bean counters, and passing whims of fickle trends rob the guitarists of the world of these magical offering.
I've grown pretty used to it, and I don't have small hands. I have a 1978 Peavey T-60 that makes the neck on my CV Tele seem twice as thick.
The reason for calling the bridge an "ashtray" was that fender sent with the models up to the 90's a removablecover for the bridge pickup. Then when players were on a gig, they would take the cover off to get better tone from the pickup and the cover was used as an ashtray. Yes, I know, horror of all horrors, people used to be able to smoke indoors at a bar then.
Fender trivia! The "ashtray bridge" actually refers to the cover that fits over the bridge. When mounted impossible to palm mute while playing. Musicians would pop this cover off and simply use as an ashtray
The reason they talk about the bridge as an "ashtray", and I sent you an email about this, is that when the guitars were first made by Leo F. he put a sliding cover over the bridge. It was removable and slid on and off. The cats that played these guitars then would take the cover off when gigging and use it as an ashtray on stage. That is where the term comes from. I has nothing to do with shape, it is due to the now missing bridge pickup cover. They always got lost.
D'aadario strings have purple and black ball ends and are made in Farmingdale NY and fender strings are made in mexico and have a simular color code that does not use purple or black. Two diffrent companys.
hey chappers, i know you ended up actually buying this guitar and i was wondering if you changed the pickups or kept the stock ones in?
Super sounds guys.... but the very first 50's Strat to come to UK was in 1958 brought in by Buddy Holly at his show.I know that as I saw him on a couple of shows that year....a sunburst....but Cliff I think was the first UK person to purchase and import....but I'm sure someone must have pointed this out before.
The Place I worked at had this Strat and it was my absolute favorite. The Playability is crazy.
A great guitar, I've played the Stratocaster, I also have built FIesta Red custom Stratocasters . The Vibe model is fantastic build quality.
The C shaped ST neck came in in 1958. Squier guitars are really great sounding and playing, don't be fooled by the cheaper price, their build quality is overseen by Fender USA. Play one and be amazed, upgrade some hardware and they are as great as USA ones!
Fiesta Red is one of my favourite colours,
i´ve seen this video like 5 times in a row... love that tele sound sooooo much!
the white cv-50 uses alnic III pups, the yellow uses alnico V. They are the same price. Is one kind better? Also, what is difference between cv-50 and cv-custom? The price is almost the same. The custom is slightly more but it's sunburst finish. Thanks for any advice!
what kind of pedals are you using in that video. in the Squier Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster. Cool sound. I am thinking about getting this caster.
that little bit at the start was fooking awesome
Thanks! I am expecting it to arrive by tomorrow or the next day and needless to say I am pretty excited.
Yes...I have also read somewhere, or heard on a documentary perhaps, that Hank's Strat wasd actually the SECOND one to come here. He was certainly the first Brit to really 'put one out there' as a solo instrument.
I have a fiesta red Jaguar and I wouldn't call it a dull pink at all; in fact, it's almost orange, with just a little bit of red mixed in.
Im buying a tele today. I cant wait, especially after watching this!
I really enjoyed your video. I have both a “Strat”, and a
Jaguar Base. I played a Jazz Base my whole carrier,
but love the Squire.
I have bought me the tele, I put a gibson burstbucker in the neck position and fitted the broadcaster/nocaster wiring that lee was talking about in the video, and i removed the lower e string and tuned it to open G. I love this thing and when I have the money I will rather buy a neck whith fender markings for it than replacing it with a fender!
A lot like Keith Richards tele, yeah?
Landonias yeah and it's awesome.
If it's a great guitar what does it matter what the sticker on the headstock says?
KokopelliSG Yeah I feel like I should get myself more Telecasters :D
I can afford that.
Thats exactly what im gonna do soon
I hear very little buzz and I noticed you guys are using a lot of gain. are you guys using a gate or are the pickups noise canceling stacked single coils ?
I've played one of the tele's at my local store, and it really does compare to my American Special tele.
the american version has very similar specs, but every detail has a little bit of extra class than the squire. but for a guitar to keep forever, and make it something to age beautifully, the squire would be perfect. And the cost is much nicer too!
i have cv50 tele for about 3 years now and its best guitar i own and first guitar i pick if i want to play or pratice .... i was now going thru reviews of this guitar on yt and finaly my favourite guitar maker test it tooo .... i think everybody love this guitar ...
I ordered one of these guitars, alas not from Andertons but elsewhere due to their free shipping to Southern Ireland. Anyway, just to say after checking out your demo, I will soon be the proud owner of the Fender Squier Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster. Thanks lads for the terrific and entertaining demo.
Hi Harshit,
I personally recommend the 60's strat. I just bought one 1 week ago. I prefer it because it covers low, mid and high range tones. The 50's strat covers the highs very well. It almost sounds like playing on glas ;-)
listen to the sound of both in different tests and then decide to by the right one for YOU !
