It's December 15, 2021, Kolkata, India, 5:48 a.m.
It's been almost 6 years since this song introduced me to John Mayer's music and my whole career on guitar studies changed once and for all. Tired after doing my engineering assignments for the entire night I decided to take a break and suddenly this song popped up in my head and as I came to check it out for almost the 1000th time, the nostalgia hit me like a running truck. The tears I shed through this man's music, the healing this man caused me incomparable to nothing. I hope every single person who's watching this video may find mental satisfaction and peace in their life. Hang in there.

I struggle with putting on a face for everyone to try and show them that I’m “mature for my age” when in reality I’m not and it has cost me enjoyment to just live in the moment. A pretentious statement would be that people didn't care at first until I change their mind. Not really in the same realm that his comment was... he was just saying that he invested a lot of time and energy into setting things up/creating things for certain people who didn't care. Wasted energy doing things for people who don't appreciate it in the least. That's not pretentious... its closer to self-deprecating in that he's saying he was very naive and got taken advantage of essentially which caused him no shortage of misery just worded in a different way.

I agree man. The way he performed this song, is otherworldly. The guitar sequence in the beginning of Shallow by Lady Gaga reminds me of this record for whatever reason.
Mayer looks like he's having a blast during this song, his vocals and playing are amazing, backed by not only two great instrumentalists but singers as well. Imagine making a cover of a song more popular than the original, and completely worth it by the way. Not only that, the camera quality is brilliant for 2008 and whoever mixed this deserves a seat in heaven. Blessed to be able to come back to this video again and again. Yes, just imagine him making a cover song more popular than the original. Because that’s what you’d have to do. His somewhat effeminate, nasal moaning version somehow managed to reach #51 on Billboards chart (have to admit, I’d never even heard it before and he did his cover almost 13 years ago.). So, yeah, super popular. Mr. Pettys version, which just about anybody with the slimmest of links to music and pop culture is more than likely familiar with, on the other hand, made it to #1 in 1989, So, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. Perhaps that was just your considered opinion it was better. That I’ll grant you.
This version legit means so much to me. Story time, I’m in 10th grade right now the school year ends in about a month, theirs this girl… she’s so perfect, I’ve had a huge crush on her since the first day of 6th grade when I first moved. We had been friends for a while, and I always wanted to make a move, but she always belonged to someone else, and when I finally had a chance, I couldn’t get the balls to ask her. Long short about a month ago I finally asked her, she said she was busy that weekend and would let me know when she’s available, She didn’t… Anyway, The day after I asked her, something wasn’t right, she wasn’t totally ignoring me, but she wasn’t not either if that makes any sense. Turns out now she has a new boyfriend not even a month after me asking her. Now I’ve been rejected multiple times in the past, but something about this one hurts the most. I actually felt a genuine connection with this girl, we would always send each other music to listen to, we would constantly look at each other and smile, laugh at each others jokes, even when they had no kick to them at all and were lame as hell. I could always talk to her as myself, and just being with her just felt right. I don’t know her new boyfriend, he goes to another school, but I hope he treats her as amazing as I would have, because she deserves it. If she’s happy, then I don’t want to get in the way. I have nothing against her, this one just hurts

I have watched this performance so many times; I have forgotten how many. But in my opinion this is the best live performance ever, John’s stage presence was otherworldly, his vocals didn’t overpower the guitars and vice versa it was absolutely frictionless. Like I really couldn’t find one flaw with this. And every time I listen to this it just puts me in this state of euphoria where it just makes me feel like everything is gonna be alright. John Mayer is the epitome of talent

I disagree since the main hook in Tom Petty's was done with a 12string which gives it that distinct tone. (When I play the song, I always use my 12 rather than the usual acoustic) John's voice has a certain quality that Tom couldn't do. (Not to say Tom's original is less that John''s cover, both are brilliant)

I know John Mayer personally. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people I know. Extremely smart, articulate and genuine.
He has this relatable, down to earth quality to him. He is a world renowned superstar, and yet, every time I listen to him, be it his songs, his interviews, whatever, I feel like this guy is just a more successful version of me. He could have been this friend we all have from high school, talented but too shy to make it. He could have been this brother who guides you through life with words of widsom and neverending support.
Very few artists are able to navigate and stay themselves without being eaten alive. Mark Knopfler comes into mind as a bit of the same type for me.
I flew all the way from France just to see Mayer live last year, and will also see him in Paris in march. He's become, through his songs, a dear friend to me rather than an artist.

Still here in 2022. John made this song his own with his beautiful vocal. The whole of this live concert is the best I've ever seen. Such a talented performer with bucket loads of charisma . He's still got it all ....my favourite . Gets me through the best and worst of times. Forever grateful for John and his music.
