It's December 15, 2021, Kolkata, India, 5:48 a.m. It's been almost 6 years since this song introduced me to John Mayer's music and my whole career on guitar studies changed once and for all. Tired after doing my engineering assignments for the entire night I decided to take a break and suddenly this song popped up in my head and as I came to check it out for almost the 1000th time, the nostalgia hit me like a running truck. The tears I shed through this man's music, the healing this man caused me incomparable to nothing. Hello from your South Asian neighbor! It's interesting how common the engineering major and guitar student combo is, in our part of the world at least. Mayer really is one of the biggest inspirations as a guitarist.
pnut3844able not pretentious man, it just might not apply to you. I struggle with putting on a face for everyone to try and show them that I’m “mature for my age” when in reality I’m not and it has cost me enjoyment to just live in the moment. I’m happy that I’m realizing it now. What is pretentious to act like you’re “all that” to impress people and have them think highly of you, you’re lying to yourself and those around you, and you make yourself seem less approachable. ( I’m not talking about u when I say “you”, just talking in general)
@@pnut3844able ... I don't think you know what pretentious means. It's actually much closer to the opposite of that. A pretentious statement would be that people didn't care at first until I change their mind. Not really in the same realm that his comment was... he was just saying that he invested a lot of time and energy into setting things up/creating things for certain people who didn't care. Wasted energy doing things for people who don't appreciate it in the least. That's not pretentious... its closer to self-deprecating in that he's saying he was very naive and got taken advantage of essentially which caused him no shortage of misery just worded in a different way.
After hearing this, he is, at least, famous, for taking something that is/was not broken and breaking it, into many various and sundry bits, in my opinion.
Mayer looks like he's having a blast during this song, his vocals and playing are amazing, backed by not only two great instrumentalists but singers as well. Imagine making a cover of a song more popular than the original, and completely worth it by the way. Not only that, the camera quality is brilliant for 2008 and whoever mixed this deserves a seat in heaven. Blessed to be able to come back to this video again and again. Hope the rest of your day is great, and if it's night where you are, sleep well :)
Yes, just imagine him making a cover song more popular than the original. Because that’s what you’d have to do. His somewhat effeminate, nasal moaning version somehow managed to reach #51 on Billboards chart (have to admit, I’d never even heard it before and he did his cover almost 13 years ago.). So, yeah, super popular. Mr. Pettys version, which just about anybody with the slimmest of links to music and pop culture is more than likely familiar with, on the other hand, made it to #1 in 1989, So, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. Every artist has the one performance that absolutely stands out and becomes timeless. Not to take away from the many many amazing John Mayer performances but there is an eclectic quality to the acoustic section of this concert that is simply outstanding.

@@elidaniel5939 Its not about the number of chords its about the way you use those chords. I have been playing this for last 8 years and i don't think anything more beautiful can be made by just keeping it so easy.
I disagree since the main hook in Tom Petty's was done with a 12string which gives it that distinct tone. (When I play the song, I always use my 12 rather than the usual acoustic) John's voice has a certain quality that Tom couldn't do. (Not to say Tom's original is less that John''s cover, both are brilliant)
i ignorantly thought for a long time that john mayer was a pop douche but after actually looking at his videos and hearing more of his songs i think he is a massive talent in the music world.
I found out he was talented few years ago, he did a song at a festival and dedicated a song to bb king. "Crossroads festival" and the song is "believe" after that I got hooked

He has this relatable, down to earth quality to him. He is a world renowned superstar, and yet, every time I listen to him, be it his songs, his interviews, whatever, I feel like this guy is just a more successful version of me. He could have been this friend we all have from high school, talented but too shy to make it. He could have been this brother who guides you through life with words of widsom and neverending support. Very few artists are able to navigate and stay themselves without being eaten alive. Mark Knopfler comes into mind as a bit of the same type for me. I flew all the way from France just to see Mayer live last year, and will also see him in Paris in march. He's become, through his songs, a dear friend to me rather than an artist.

@@Laura-ck3bp do you have any Video? Is it possible to see it somewhere ? Lucky you!!!

Listen to his live in Birmingham when he was just starting. Best live performance I’ve seen in my life.
Same
you need to listen to more live acoustic performances.. they usually slap way harder then studio versions
The back ground singers really did a great job on this one
Can you imagine being in that crowd that day listening to this live like omg
+Phil McIndoe I was there, it was a cold rainy night in LA. And this whole show had everyone's jaws on the floor. Still the best "listening music" concert i've ever been to. I was a 17 year old pup, who didn't know what he was listening to would one day become pretty damn iconic.

Every artist has the one performance that absolutely stands out and becomes timeless. Not to take away from the many many amazing John Mayer performances but there is an eclectic quality to the acoustic section of this concert that is simply outstanding.

Anna Woods it's damn great music
Cant blame you
Anna Woods cool
but he is free falling.
I feel like every passionate musician ever, literally HAS to appreciate this sort of musician-ery. It's literally beyond such a level of artistry, the way he plays, its beauty in its purest form.
+quincywho This doesn't impress me. He's just finger picking. Finger picking can sound really pretty though so I see where you're coming from.

John Mayer is such a talented musician.
I'd be honored if some John Mayer fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his early masterpieces CLARITY and QUIET on my YT channel in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace out.
This isn't his song, it's Tom Petty's song
@@willritter4076 I looked for it ?? What's ur link ?
hi Michelle, UA-cam doesn't like links in comments, but if you YT search my name with John Mayer you should find me easily. Or just tap on my photo there to go straight to my channel. Thanks for asking.

How cool to have an eternal impact on the human race with your art. Thanks John Mayer ❤️
Lyrics
She's a good girl, loves her mamma
Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too, yeah, yeah
It's a long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway running through the yard
I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breaking her heart
And I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
And I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
All the vampires walkin' through the valley
They move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts
And I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin'
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her, her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Oh, I'm gonna leave this, this world for a while
Now I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
And I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin', yeah, yeah

Mike Msssé sing this much better.
Seriously this is the best background music you ever heard? It’s only a few chords lmao
@@elidaniel5939 Its not about the number of chords its about the way you use those chords. I have been playing this for last 8 years and i don't think anything more beautiful can be made by just keeping it so easy.
There's something in John's voice that makes this song a bit more amazing than the original.
Bartman954
I'd say guitar more that vocals
I disagree since the main hook in Tom Petty's was done with a 12string which gives it that distinct tone. (When I play the song, I always use my 12 rather than the usual acoustic) John's voice has a certain quality that Tom couldn't do. (Not to say Tom's original is less that John''s cover, both are brilliant)
Bartman954 well said.
It's herpes
Thanks dude

Hi sis
i ignorantly thought for a long time that john mayer was a pop douche but after actually looking at his videos and hearing more of his songs i think he is a massive talent in the music world.
Same. He is insanely talented.
Crazy Horse
I was same
Then I heard a song on radio was gobsmacked when I heard his name
Exactly how I felt once too. Now I'm so glad I gave him a second listen one fateful day.
I found out he was talented few years ago, he did a song at a festival and dedicated a song to bb king. "Crossroads festival" and the song is "believe" after that I got hooked
POP ROCK! and most of his guitar playing is either funk or blues

Jacob Hellelund Exactly. Quite overlooked that part.
Yeah.. robbie mcintosh with his sweet little slide licks and David Ryan Harris with his beautiful voice to back up John Mayer. ☺️👍🏼

Tom Petty's version, yes. But this? This I hot garbage 😂
Clinton Huebert one of the dumbest comments I ever heard in my life, and I had to listen to a lot of bullshit in my life

I have watched this performance so many times; I have forgotten how many. But in my opinion this is the best live performance ever, John’s stage presence was otherworldly, his vocals didn’t overpower the guitars and vice versa it was absolutely frictionless. Like I really couldn’t find one flaw with this. And every time I listen to this it just puts me in this state of euphoria where it just makes me feel like everything is gonna be alright. John Mayer is the epitome of talent
I love it
There's just something about the way he sings this. You can tell he's just feeling it.
Now watch the Axl Rose/Tom Petty performance

The original is a masterpiece. There have been other covers. But this one, this one is my favorite, thanks John

Arguably the greatest cover of all time.
Grew up on Tom Petty and I love this cover. This is a master class in how you do a cover. Familiar yet entirely new at the same time.

Wow. Nice experience I love this song this is my favorite version. How are you Mexicansage ?
Hello beautiful how are you doing hopefully you are doing good??
One of the few talented musicians left today
I know John Mayer personally. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people I know. Extremely smart, articulate and genuine.
How do you know him may i ask?
Watching on October 2, 2017... RIP Tom Petty, and thank you Mr. Mayer for breathing new life into this song.
