- Boo quit her job, and is starting her own business to a sense. She will be doing booth rent at a salon, and is getting ready to start on June 1st. So we went, on a trip, to my favorite giant spillin'way, in search of some Volkswagen sized city cats. We got something else instead. PAAA POWWW!

You are not alone at getting excited for catching shad in the mouth. I did it on my fly rod for the first time this year and was pretty excited about it. When you have been fishing for 30 years anything new is exciting!

Caught my first Wallheads of my 60 yr life last weekend. Was cat fishing on the bottom with a night crawler and bobber. Got a 16 1/2" and a 18"!! Great eating!!!

I’ve found that when fishing with bread that using bagels has the best chance of keeping your bait out there for maximum bite potential. The crusty thicker “skin” gives something for the hook to grab onto as well as preventing water from getting to the part that normally would get soggy and fall off.
You guys are awesome. Boo seems to be getting good at fishing and soon she be waking you up too go fishing lol.i watch every show.
Cool how they have little fishing station platforms under this spillway. There's even rod holders. If they had a vendor selling bait you'd have everything.

Cast nets can be used in Nebraska between I believe, July - November on certain bodies of water, list is in the NGPC handbook. Shad & Alewife, live has to be used in same body of water.

I had a bobber out extensively later in the trip! Never went down 😢

To make a weed baited hook.
Take a size 10 fly hook.
Tie on some marabou olive green.
Mix in some brown and a small dash of red marabou.
It will float and move like weed so you dont have to re-bait all the time.
Its a brilliant fly for mullet aswell
We catch shad when we are ice fishing 1/64 ounce jigs with pink plastics. It’s not continuous like this but it happens quite a few times. Amazing improvised strategy I’ll need to try now!
I’ve caught shad using micro spoons. It’s very very shiny so I toss it into a big school and before it hits the bottom they usually hit it. Verycool

I used to catch shad with tiny hooks and bread rolled into dough balls. Caught some big bass with them.
You should check out some videos of the Colombia river shad run for sure. It's just as much fun as your having with these guys
Buy a smelt net that's how I get my shad. dip them when they run in the spring then chunk em up and freeze them

I'm from Massachusetts. We shad fish the whole month of May. They Spawn in our rivers.. A good day you can catch up to 200 fish. You use a shad dart... Great video man

In Fredericksburg VA. we fish the shad and Herrin spawn. It's fun you can catch 50 fish an hour when its at peak! Good times

I've seen a shad be caught on a worm. It was at Thomas Hill Reservoir in Missouri.
We use this thing called a sabiki rig here in Cali to catch shad for baits for our crawdad traps. Basically a few tiny jig heads on a single line. People fish the shad spawn like crazy out here.

Hey man you can catch them on a sabiki rig. They have multiple hooks on them so they might not be legal there either. If not you can always make your own with the legal amount of hooks using tiny fly hooks. Works great.

Couple years ago was white bass fishing in a creek that feeds a lake. Caught 5 gizzard shad in the mouth with a rooster tail. All over a pound each. Wouldn't have believed it but watched them follow the lure in every cast. One of the weirdest days I've had on the water. Still the only time I've ever seen it happen.
I used to catch shad on the Colombia river and we would just use a red and white bare jigheads and you'd catch them two at a time. And those shad are probably 2 pound on average.

Hey stache fam just a update I went out and caught a 3and a half pound drum fish and a few smallmouth today and no birdsnest all day and love my shimano slx xt and 6th sense 7,2 rod it's a blast I'm loving it.

If you get shad eating bread crumbs, a tiny square of pork rind stays on the hook just fine. Just float it around with the bread.
Shad will hit tiny jigs called Shad Darts in North Carolina when the Shad run in April.
Different kind of Shad I believe.

I caught some womper shad flylining a tiny hook with the smallest piece of leftover worm on it just trying to get some gill in the slack water for bait. I caught like 5 and some baby carp. Worked out perfectly because I had one worm left and caught plenty of bait

I caught a shad way back in 85 at a place called LockNDam in Centerville Texas. I was a youngin back then.
We'd catch them on sabiki rigs back east. You'd love it!
