As a carpenter for 40 years, I have to confess your secret door impressed me on all counts. It's actually more of an art project than carpentry, and you are an accomplished artist. Oh some people will nit pick, they can't help it. UA-cam tends to make experts and critics of us, as we tell others how to do things. You did great. Video also well done.
Wow, thanks so much! I never really realized it, but yeah, I guess it was more of an art project! And I used whatever tools I could find to create my vision! Thank you!!!
Tara...I'm a carpenter and consider myself fairly creative, but even "I" am very impressed at the thought and the way you utilized what was needed to make this work without rebuilding an "actual" bookshelf/door, meaning the use of just the covers and styrofoam and dark paper for depth. I wasn't going to write anything until I saw some of the negative comments! It's a shame you were chosen as a target here, and in such a rude manner. Very classy of you not only to reply, but still be so courteous!! And you're correct most anyone can do "MOST" anything. My 75 yr old mother is afraid of most tools, but still amazes me when she sends a pic of something she had just built. And, I still call mine either a "Drill", Drill gun", or "Power drill" or just a driver, "driver". If I'm working with someone they we all know exactly what I mean, and nobody's EVER corrected me..lol. In addition, although rare, I've used my "Hack Saw" to cut wood in certain situations. There's a tool for everyting if you're in the business, but if you're not, you use what you have!! Again..great job, and very well explained, even if after the fact!!
Tim, thanks so much for taking the time to comment! It's great hearing from a real carpenter. Much appreciated :)
We need men to cut woods, to drill screws... a woman can't do it. it is too ''hard'' hahahahahaha If women had been in charge to involve into contruction, technology would be more advance since we dont only ''think'' with our muscle. You scare mr. Carz?
"It's a toilet." To me that was just hilarious. Nice job.
Haha, thanks!!! Glad you liked it!
less complicated to actual hidden bookshelf. Simple but yet creative!! thumbs up to you😉
You pay so much attention to detail, I love it.
I will admit that first I cringed at cutting books, but this just came out so cool. I will be building one when I have my own house
I have a music / computer room that is ideal for this project. I have been so anxious to do this. Now I have to hunt for books appropriate enough for this. Love your style too. Thanks for sharing.
Oh awesome! Have fun with your project! You'll love it!
Extremely clever. Good choice to create the light faux books.
Thanks very much!
So clever! I've always wanted a secret library door- since I was little and read Nancy Drew mysteries lol - this is so much fun!
I guess being a carpenter myself I will try and be a little less critical than I normally am. I like the idea, but I will admit I really cringed when I saw the door handle on the exterior of the bathroom. The bolt being quite visible would scare me some kid would run past and catch on it. I probably would have spent a bit of time researching how better to hide the handle. I just saw the video 2 seconds ago and thought it looked actually quite good with the tools she used (I have a lot of tools at my disposal so I probably would have done things a bit different). But I think she used what she had at her disposal quite well and did a pretty good job of it.
To the really harsh critics, it is like she said at the start of the video. She is not trying to hide a cache of guns or money or priceless things criminals would steal. She just created a unique bathroom door.
Thanks for your comment. I never thought of the door handle as a hazard at all and I've worked in the safety field actually. But thanks!
I would put some black paint on the bolt, but as for it snagging a kid.. Not likely.
Nice design.
Stupidjeep84 Thanks!
Thumbs up for the CJ Cherry book. Love that series.
Haha! Awesome!
TVTara, I love this idea. Thanks for posting it. I bought my house a year ago, and I have a downstairs bathroom that this would work extremely well with.
Glad you like it! Hope yours works out!
This is unbelievable, and probably better than so many other hidden doors I’ve seen on here. I think what makes it so convincing is the lower shelf where the odd sized books are stuffed sideways, because that’s usually what happens at my house so it makes it really realistic.
Thanks so much!
Tara and the those DIY'ers who want to do this project! I will share with you that the hex bolt and nut could have been completely hidden if you really want too? the Nut can and should be a flush mount nut size to fit and for the hex headed bolt for get that and go with a carriage bolt or even a counter sink into the book cover and a fine tread screw size to fit would have this fabulously finished. Good luck on your next project.
Great tip, thanks Benjamin!
Great job Tara, very ingenious, simple and economical. You are very clever and skillful. Thank you very much for the video, your ideas will be put to practice among others to create my own bookshelf door.
Love the outside door handle, very clever !
Thanks!
Great Job and a really neat IDEA! and putting the doors on the bottom is a nice touch. Thanks for sharing.
+Patty Minger So glad you liked it, Patty!!!
Really like the idea of glueing book binding onto styrofoam !!! using an existing door and the bottom fake door.Your are truely creative, keep it up and don't get discourage...
+B. David Thanks very much!
Awesome! I love it when women take on projects such as this. Great job
Thanks, Karen! Much appreciated!
TVTara CAN YOU MAKE THIS IN MY HOUSE PLEASE
WarLock Gamming™ No, sorry, I'm no pro! Haha! I only want to be responsible for messing up my own projects ;)
TVTara :)
I Love the Suprise... didnt expect it to be a bathroom. LoL
+po Zn ;)
Love the irony in the book chose (even it wasnt willingly). The "pretender" is a door grip - but pretends to be still a book. And the "readers diggest" is rip apart because anyone will use good books for that.
Anyway, well done Madame. For that money and time its quite perfect.
Perfect. Now I'm safe from apocalypses and guests.
Haha, yup!
That's one of the most creative things I've seen! Awesome work and very creative. I love hidden secret compartments/ places.
Thanks very much! Glad you like it ;)
who rulez?! o'doyle rules!
That is very ingenious! Great idea. Great Job Tara!!
Thank you so much! :)
totally awesome, I've been looking for a way to do the basement door which is in my livingroom and this is it... super cool and very creative...
Glad you like it! I'm sure your basement door will be awesome!
Fantastic! I am having my house built as we speak and found the perfect location for a hidden door. But it lacks depth when the door open so the standard bookshelf idea didn't work. However, you found a way to make it into a false book shelf that has no depth so you can open the door all the way with no problem. and I love that! Will definitely be utilizing your idea here!
Awesome! Have fun with it!!!
TVTara
You did a fantastic job! Very clever... You've definitely earned a new subbie! I can't wait to see what other cool stuff is on your channel... Oh & btw, You're drop dead GORGEOUS! Have a great day & Thank you...

Awwww, you're so nice!!! Haha, thanks!
Very cleaver. A fun way to dress up a door. Nice job!
+vetten76 Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Your secret door looks beautiful. Thanks for posting
Thank you so much! I appreciate your nice comment!
Great job and I love that sink!
+Jeffrey Dubinsky Thanks!
Fantastic idea and looks great. With my luck I'd be the guy that walks over to pull a book out and rip it off the door. lol
Haha!
That is very creative. Good job...
Thank you! 😊
I'll bet, for instance, 20 of your friends came over or you were having a party, someone asked to go to the bathroom and you sent them down stairs, over half would return saying they could not find the bathroom. LOL! You should set up a video camera and see how many people looks for the bathroom and can't find it. Great job!
Hahahha, actually probably 20 out of 20 would not find it! People just don't expect it! But yeah, a video would be funny! Hmmmm :)
Cool design. Nice project. Good video presentation. Clever handle.
I'd feel bad ripping a cover off a book.
+Pay Way Thanks. And you can find water-damaged books so you don't feel so bad 😉
Wether or not it's you're personal work, it's still very ingenious. As long as u have the time and attention to detail you can make something cool on the cheap. I think it's bad ass! Nice work Tara. Thx for posting.
Thanks, Ryan. And yes it's all my own work. I think the details could be better, such as hiding the hinges, but it's good enough for me :)
My comment wasn't a personal shot. Sorry if it came across as one. I was referring to the haters. They can go suck somewhere else. Nice work
Haha, ok :)
I like your vids Tara! keep em coming.
Thanks, Jimmy!!!
A very "novel" idea!
Monster Bear Haha, good one! :)
Monster Bear omg you did not......LOL
He did... geez! LOL
Very well done. You made an excellent choice in using a dark book for the door handle as it will be handled most often. If you had chosen a light colored book it would have shown use marks (finger prints etc.) more easily.
Thanks!!!
This is sooo cool, I want a secret bathroom lol...nice work, great creativity😀
Thanks!! Glad you liked it! 😄
That is pretty cool. Attractive and smart , thanks for sharing.
You're welcome! Glad you liked it!!
It is very very beautiful. Without much talk. Very nice indeed.
Very ingenious! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Mario!
This girl is not only fine as hell, but she basically tears shit up. I am now her newest subscriber.
Seriously. This girl is dope. Time to binge on her channel for a little while!
Hahaha! Thanks! ;)
After watching the movie Panic Room I've been obsessed with panic/safe rooms! You did a great job!
Haha, thanks! Yeah that was an unforgettable movie!
Smart. The door handle was especially genius.
Thank you! :)
Great job! Love that a lady did this too! Could you please describe the handle once more, what kind of handle is under the book? I'm having trouble visualizing what's underneath, and how it was concealed.
+Angela Huntsinger Hmm ok... So it's a door handle which is a lever style. Something like this: m.homedepot.com/p/Schlage-Elan-Satin-Chrome-Bed-and-Bath-Lever-F40-ELA-626/100052180
And then I cut a book in half and also carved out the pages of the book so that the book covers basically hug the door lever. I used two long screw and bolts to keep it closed around the handle. So the lever still works the same but has a book wrapped around it.
For what it is and what was invested this looks awesome. I also like that it is totally reversible.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I kept it pretty simple.
simply amazing! i love your creativity!
Thank you!
That such a good and simple idea. I think it's awesome. Love it
Thanks!!! Glad to hear it!!!
Ingenious,, Love it!
Nice work. I've seen hidden doors done before. This takes the cake and i like cake...alot. I do custom woodworking, for a couple decades now. The simplicity of your door is so welcome in my world. I'm going to reproduce this project to hide my guitars. I like guitars...alot! ~Peace~
Haha, thanks Scooter! Yeah, this is really simple and I'm sure a pro like you could make it really awesome!
Wow you're so cool Tara, I love secret passages in homes. I want to build a whole house from the ground up with secret passages and hidden rooms. Good job!!
Thanks, Joseph! Yeah a whole house with secret passages would be amazing!
Hey Tara forget the critics, that's awesome! Great idea and good job, especially for a weekend project.
Thanks so much! :)
This is so clever! I want to try it
Do it! It's so fun!
I've always wanted to do something like this! I'm planning on building mine in the next few weeks. Thanks for the fantastic ideas. I'm going to be using painted styrofoam (we'll see if it works!) so using the book covers with styrofoam as well should help lighten the weight.
Thanks again!
+Julie Grey Good luck with yours!
I've been wanting to do this for my walk in closet :-)
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks! :)
This is so awesome! I've always wanted one of these when I buy my own house someday! Thanks for the idea! :)
Thanks for the nice comment! Happy to hear you're inspired!
Awesome and incredibly creative!

Thanks!!
Very creative and stylish as well? Good job!
Thanks!
Super Cool Idea!!!
Hey Tara...I love this!!..and it's very creative! !!...can you please show me exactly what type of (nuts, bolts, attachments, etc)for the door handle and how it's carved out and the handle itself? ..you've inspired me to do this and when I'm done I'll post a picture of my secret door as well thanks
I don't have a pic of it in process, but just open the front flap of a hardcover book and carve into the pages all at once with an exacto knife in the shape of the door handle (not the round knob kind though!) then buy a thick bolt and screw and place it so that the book is hugging the handle.
The beginning of this video, with that book gently going down and her coming out from behind the library, for some reason cracked me up 😂
+MrGilRoland Haha, I like that part too 😂
Good Job... Way to go out there and "Just do it"...
Thanks!
Good stuff. Thx for sharing
You are amazing!! Subscribed

I would never thought of that . Thats great. Nice work . I have some ideas now and you r gorgeous beautiful thanksfor vid . Bathroom is nice as well.
Thanks!!! Glad I gave you some new ideas, Jose!
Thank you for putting up an empowering example.
an "empowering" example?
so, you must be a native speaker. What do I say instead?
It could have been the perfect word. I know not your intent. What did you mean by "empowering"?
My sister is very shy and does not want to think of construction activities, saying it's not for women. This video shows otherwise. I thought, she can do this, you can do this.
There are more of course.
Bas Cost Budde: Then the word "empowering" is the perfect word. Thank you for taking the time, and having the patience, to explain it to me. Take care and God bless you.
really really salute you. Very creative and innovative secret bookcase door.
+Edwin Tiew Thanks very much!
Very creative, Tara.
Thanks!!!
That is really nice. Thank you for the video.
Glad you liked it! :)
I have a add on room at the back of my dinning room. And I think a bookcase door would be a great installment to the house. The bookcase would add a nice look for the dinning room also.
Yes it would be perfect in a dining room!
Brilliant, well done..
Thanks! 😄
Great video and awesome ideas!
Thanks!
Nice job, very clever.
Thank you!!
Way cool Tara. The bathroom cost you a lil more than that neat door tho... :) Gr8 ideas and fabrication for underneath of a staircase.
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Very Nice, that little bathroom is too cool... I'd like to knw where you got that sink/faucet combo. Thanks
+TomCorliss VintageTub.com. I think the brand is called Whitehaus
this is terrific!
Thanks!!!
I've been wanting to make one for years after seeing them at the Dungeon. My question is are you gluing the poster board to the door? And screwing the pieces of wood to the door as well?
Yes, the wood was screwed in, but the poster board was a bit of double-sided tape and small nails. I tried not to damage the door, in case I wanted to remove it all.
very crafty - xlnt job!
Thank you! :)
Oooo...Tara my heart out!
Hahaha!
Lady of all trades
