    As a carpenter for 40 years, I have to confess your secret door impressed me on all counts. It's actually more of an art project than carpentry, and you are an accomplished artist. Oh some people will nit pick, they can't help it. UA-cam tends to make experts and critics of us, as we tell others how to do things. You did great. Video also well done.

      Wow, thanks so much! I never really realized it, but yeah, I guess it was more of an art project! And I used whatever tools I could find to create my vision! Thank you!!!

    Tara...I'm a carpenter and consider myself fairly creative, but even "I" am very impressed at the thought and the way you utilized what was needed to make this work without rebuilding an "actual" bookshelf/door, meaning the use of just the covers and styrofoam and dark paper for depth. I wasn't going to write anything until I saw some of the negative comments! It's a shame you were chosen as a target here, and in such a rude manner. Very classy of you not only to reply, but still be so courteous!! And you're correct most anyone can do "MOST" anything. My 75 yr old mother is afraid of most tools, but still amazes me when she sends a pic of something she had just built. And, I still call mine either a "Drill", Drill gun", or "Power drill" or just a driver, "driver". If I'm working with someone they we all know exactly what I mean, and nobody's EVER corrected me..lol. In addition, although rare, I've used my "Hack Saw" to cut wood in certain situations. There's a tool for everyting if you're in the business, but if you're not, you use what you have!! Again..great job, and very well explained, even if after the fact!!

      We need men to cut woods, to drill screws... a woman can't do it. it is too ''hard'' hahahahahaha If women had been in charge to involve into contruction, technology would be more advance since we dont only ''think'' with our muscle. You scare mr. Carz?

    I guess being a carpenter myself I will try and be a little less critical than I normally am. I like the idea, but I will admit I really cringed when I saw the door handle on the exterior of the bathroom. The bolt being quite visible would scare me some kid would run past and catch on it. I probably would have spent a bit of time researching how better to hide the handle. I just saw the video 2 seconds ago and thought it looked actually quite good with the tools she used (I have a lot of tools at my disposal so I probably would have done things a bit different). But I think she used what she had at her disposal quite well and did a pretty good job of it.
    To the really harsh critics, it is like she said at the start of the video. She is not trying to hide a cache of guns or money or priceless things criminals would steal. She just created a unique bathroom door.

      Thanks for your comment. I never thought of the door handle as a hazard at all and I've worked in the safety field actually. But thanks!

      I would put some black paint on the bolt, but as for it snagging a kid.. Not likely.

    This is unbelievable, and probably better than so many other hidden doors I’ve seen on here. I think what makes it so convincing is the lower shelf where the odd sized books are stuffed sideways, because that’s usually what happens at my house so it makes it really realistic.

    Tara and the those DIY'ers who want to do this project! I will share with you that the hex bolt and nut could have been completely hidden if you really want too? the Nut can and should be a flush mount nut size to fit and for the hex headed bolt for get that and go with a carriage bolt or even a counter sink into the book cover and a fine tread screw size to fit would have this fabulously finished. Good luck on your next project.

    Love the irony in the book chose (even it wasnt willingly). The "pretender" is a door grip - but pretends to be still a book. And the "readers diggest" is rip apart because anyone will use good books for that.
    Anyway, well done Madame. For that money and time its quite perfect.

    Fantastic! I am having my house built as we speak and found the perfect location for a hidden door. But it lacks depth when the door open so the standard bookshelf idea didn't work. However, you found a way to make it into a false book shelf that has no depth so you can open the door all the way with no problem. and I love that! Will definitely be utilizing your idea here!

    I'll bet, for instance, 20 of your friends came over or you were having a party, someone asked to go to the bathroom and you sent them down stairs, over half would return saying they could not find the bathroom. LOL! You should set up a video camera and see how many people looks for the bathroom and can't find it. Great job!

    • @TVTara

    Great job! Love that a lady did this too! Could you please describe the handle once more, what kind of handle is under the book? I'm having trouble visualizing what's underneath, and how it was concealed.

    • @TVTara
      @TVTara  8 років тому

      +Angela Huntsinger Hmm ok... So it's a door handle which is a lever style. Something like this: m.homedepot.com/p/Schlage-Elan-Satin-Chrome-Bed-and-Bath-Lever-F40-ELA-626/100052180
      And then I cut a book in half and also carved out the pages of the book so that the book covers basically hug the door lever. I used two long screw and bolts to keep it closed around the handle. So the lever still works the same but has a book wrapped around it.

      I don't have a pic of it in process, but just open the front flap of a hardcover book and carve into the pages all at once with an exacto knife in the shape of the door handle (not the round knob kind though!) then buy a thick bolt and screw and place it so that the book is hugging the handle.

      an "empowering" example?

    • @bascostbudde7614
      @bascostbudde7614 7 років тому

      so, you must be a native speaker. What do I say instead?

    • @billwilson5341
      @billwilson5341 7 років тому

      It could have been the perfect word. I know not your intent. What did you mean by "empowering"?

    • @bascostbudde7614
      @bascostbudde7614 7 років тому +1

      My sister is very shy and does not want to think of construction activities, saying it's not for women. This video shows otherwise. I thought, she can do this, you can do this.
      There are more of course.

      Bas Cost Budde: Then the word "empowering" is the perfect word. Thank you for taking the time, and having the patience, to explain it to me. Take care and God bless you.

      I have a add on room at the back of my dinning room. And I think a bookcase door would be a great installment to the house. The bookcase would add a nice look for the dinning room also.

    • @TVTara
      @TVTara  8 років тому

      Yes it would be perfect in a dining room!

    I've been wanting to make one for years after seeing them at the Dungeon. My question is are you gluing the poster board to the door? And screwing the pieces of wood to the door as well?

    • @TVTara
      @TVTara  10 років тому

      Yes, the wood was screwed in, but the poster board was a bit of double-sided tape and small nails. I tried not to damage the door, in case I wanted to remove it all.
