So many, well every "DIY" video I watch makes it seem flawless, and I must be an idiot if I didn't make it perfect the 1st time. Which anyone that works with wood and measurements knows things go wrong. Could be a warped board, bad measurement, too hungover ect. Looking to make a spare bedroom door/bookcase. • @Genubath1
    @Genubath1 4 роки тому +77

    if you use the door a lot, the wheel might mark the floor and give someone a clue to the true nature of your shelf. Also, you could add a hanging weight to the latch to make it close instead of having a stiff wire push the latch closed. This would also make the book return to it's resting position automatically.

    First, this is an excellent video. It’s obvious that you put a lot into the planning, shooting and editing. As they say in the biz, excellent production values.
    Second, I'll echo everyone else in applauding how you included your mistakes. We are all going to screw things up, but we most likely need to learn how to deal with those mistakes. You are an excellent model for that process.
    Finally, a hidden play room. Brilliant. Mom and Dad can catch a break while the kids are enjoying their special place. Good thing there isn't a lock!

      Very nice. So his friends next project is to install sheet rock to make the room comfortable. But iam wondering what's the best application for this? Shelf' not build strong enough for panic room and you dont need to hide a storage or kids play area. How do you explain where people went after they come in the house? Sorry if iam over thinking this.

  • @BigRalphSmith
    @BigRalphSmith 9 років тому +25

    I have to say, I would spot that door for what it is due to the obviously unnecessary gap in the otherwise flat frame around the unit. Of course, I'm a carpenter so I'd probably be more inclined to notice it than others but I would spot it.
    I would have done this so that _all_ of the visible trim around the bookshelf is attached to the shelf/door instead of the wall. That way, when the door closes, it brings all of the "trim" directly up against the wall itself. As long as the door latches snugly enough and brings the "trim" firmly up against the wall without any obvious gaps between the "trim" and the wall, it will appear that the "trim" is attached to the wall.
    When the door opens, the trim simply comes away from the wall. This truly hides the fact that it is a door because there is no obvious separation between the shelf and it's "trim" _and_ no obvious separation between the "trim" and the wall which would be a give-away. With all the trim attached to the door and not the wall, when closed, there is no visible reason to assume the trim is not attached to the wall as it would be in any standard cabinet framing technique.
    Another trick to reduce any chance someone might spot the unit for what it is is to completely fill all of the shelves with books. No "nick-nacks".
    Also, the latch book (and a few that are next to it) should be books that are far less interesting than Jules Vern. If I saw that hard backed book, I'd be interested in looking at it and that would mean the odds are higher that someone would innocently try to remove and peruse the book thinking it genuine.
    The latch book should have a title on the spine that is something along the lines of "Advanced Mathematical Concepts In Structural Engineering - 1966" or something like that that almost no one would actually be inclined to attempt to read out of innocent curiosity.
    Just a few ideas on the subject.

      +BigRalphSmith This isn't a James Bond movie. It's an access panel for the utilities. It has to be thought of more as a dual functional door rather than Dr. Evil's secret laboratory.
      Besides, how are you going to attach trim to the hinge side of the bookcase and not rip it off when you open the door?

    • @BigRalphSmith
      @BigRalphSmith 9 років тому +3

      Carl Jr
      Relax, Carl. You sound really defensive and there's no need for that.
      It's just a home carpentry project.
      He was satisfied with the result and that's fine.
      All I did was point out that someone who does finishing carpentry work such as myself would probably spot it and I suggested some things I might have done differently. That's all.
      I bet if you really thought about it, you could come up with at least two different ways to do it but personally, I would use what's called a "double articulated" hinge.
      They are designed to allow deeply recessed doors to move straight forward out of their recesses before swinging to the side. They are large hinges that can mount inside the casement or even on the other side of the wall.
      There are even "sliding" double articulated hinges that accommodate extremely deep recesses. You could even build such a system yourself out of lumber.
      The most common example of a double articulated hinge that I know of is what they use on a flat screen TV wall mount.
      I can think of yet another method that even uses cheap regular door hinges and then there are "track" hinges etc. but you get the idea. All you need to do is use your imagination and that's what projects like this one are all about.

    Super Cool. Well done it is a really good Idea and well built. I like the way you show your mistakes and miss calculations and show them as part of the learning process. I think too many people just hide or ignore their mistakes to make them look more professional. To me mistakes are good if you learn from them

      Also, since we are all going to make mistakes, learning how to work through the solution to them is an essential skill if we are going to actually make anything ourselves. It's not enough to know how to make good joins or fit hinges correctly. We also need to know how to work with mistakes to end up with something useful

    • @Castle6064
      @Castle6064 10 років тому

      I agree. You can read all about a subject until you can quote it chapter and verse like some people can with books like the bible. Me, I take the the Indiana Jones. Snr. Approach, in that the point in writing things in a book is so you don't have to remember them. When I was in college I could hand in pieces to my teacher's that resembled war and peace. Other guys could only hand in an A4 page at a push. They asked me how I could write so much. To me it was easy. I catalogued all my mistakes, there were plenty of them. Showed how I made them and how I was correcting them and finishing the piece. A stupid mistake was reworked as a design feature. This all goes to prove your learning and can think on your feet.

    I've always loved the idea of Secret doors, though I wouldn't have used a book someone would want to read like Jules Verne XD You could have also done a "The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe" style, and just had a Wardrobe with a sliding Back Wall, or even a hinged back wall, way more hidden, and it's one of the styles from The Elder Scrolls games. They're some of my favourite games so that's why I mentioned them =P I haven't ever made a hidden door, but maybe one day! =3

      +Tre ore nononononono you open the door to see DARKNESS! And there should be a wired screen at the very back that suddenly turns on automatically from the latch. The screen glitches and reveals a voice "W-e-l-co-me-" in a really glitchy voice.
      That would be interesting.
