Make REALLY CHEAP FURNITURE look AMAZING on a budget

- Is it worth it?? That will depend who you ask. The cost of pretty much everything, including used furniture, has gone up so much in recent years that it's making more quality pieces unattainable for a LOT of folks. At least temporarily. Is it junk though? To me, if it functions properly, regardless of what it's made of, it's not junk.
But this one is REALLY cheap, and needs some basic repairs.
If you're on a super tight budget but still want things that look nice, you can find pieces like this very inexpensively in thrift stores, or even free on FB Marketplace. Most still have some years left in them, and I'm all for keeping stuff out of a landfill. Hopefully you can find some that don't have big chunks missing, but in this video, I want to show you how you can fix them as easily as possible.
These aren't the kind of flips to really make much money on, when you consider cost and time spent versus sale price... but if you need some inexpensive furniture that is readily available, this might be a good option. These pieces are also great for trying out new techniques on.
I'm using Fusion Mineral Paint here, but really, you can use any paint you can get your hands on. Instead of epoxy, you can use a regular glue. I used my impact driver and my SurfPrep here to save myself some time, but all of this can be done by hand without these power tools. You'll pretty much NEED to have a couple of spring clamps to do repairs like I'm doing here, but they are literally a few dollars each at discount stores, and can be used for years on many projects.

This might sound funny, but I found this to be such a respectful, encouraging video. You are so respectful of those of us who don’t have a lot of money but still want to live with pretty things. This is a perfect, beginner friendly tutorial for those of us who’d like to try salvaging something even though we don’t have fancy tools or multiple products. This is why you’re my favorite Angie!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching and your incredibly kind words. 😊
@irishlady, I like your description of this project. The idea of caring for less expensive peices and showing ways to refinish without a lot of equipment is so helpful.
@irishlady, I like your description of this project. The idea of caring for less expensive peices and showing ways to refinish without a lot of equipment is so helpful.
What Irishlady said. Really appreciate this!
Great tips throughout! The nails to reinforce the bondo was a new one I'll definitely try. Cannot wait for the warmer weather to come so I can work on my projects as the garage is a refuge for the car during the cold and snow.
Nacho is one very talented cat!
Isn't he great? He's so smart! He was so excited to show everyone what he could do. 😊😺 I'll cross my fingers for warmer weather for you too so you get your work space back. Thanks for watching!
Me, too. I had to rebuild a missing corner section like that years ago on a Lane table I thrifted for $6. It's held up on my over sized bedside table for 25 years without nails to reinforce the patch but I will definitely keep that in mind for future projects.
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery Hey I just wanted to chime in that my daughter has a cat that looks a lot like your Nacho, with the same beautiful reddish marbling in his coat! Would you believe his name is also Nacho? I got his sister, Punkin and she inherited the fetching trick from their mom, while Nacho didn’t. How funny is that? If I could send you a picture of them I would just so you could see how similar they look. 😁
With any luck I’ll be prepared to tackle a couple of my wooden furniture projects when it warms up here. I have only one dresser from my grandmother’s set that I inherited, which needs some TLC, but I was afraid to do anything with it until now. I’m really loving your videos and learning so much. Thank you.! I also love the bunny intermissions those are wonderful! ❤️🥰
I've been wondering how to replace a downstairs bathroom vanity with the very type of damage that you fixed with bondo here. Our vanity is original to, and a great style for, our house. Tomorrow morning I will go look at it again with new eyes. The tips and ideas in this video seem accessible to us who don't have a lot of experience or special tools and who want or need to be frugal. Watching your art and skills being put to use brings hope and joy to us, too.
It's great that you also addressed the ways to save a little money on the supplies. Also, I can't tell you how often I'll see a piece that's either been discarded or thrifted and think "Ooo, I wonder what Angie would do to bring this back to life!" BTW, I had to watch the Nacho segment twice- once to watch him and the second to admire those floors! They're gorgeous.
I thought exactly the same thing but I also wondered if Angie refinished them herself?
Thanks so much for watching Gisele!
Absolutely adorable. I would definitely put that in my guest room. Thank you for showing beginner's an inexpensive way to start flipping or creating something for their own home.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing how to transform cheaper furniture ❤
You're most welcome, I'm glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Angie, that piece turned out really pretty. I love the color. It looked very bad in the beginning so great job on giving it a new life. Nacho, is adorable and quite the ball player. God bless.
Thanks so much!
I absolutely love it! Love that you took something that was this close 🤏 to garbage and gave it new life and a high-end look!! Love the stripe design you made too! Talk about an up cycle!!So beautiful 🤩
You are so talented and creative - I’m so impressed!❤ 💯 😻
Wow, thank you so much!! I really appreciate that! 😊
I loved this video. The knowledge you shared, your calming voice, your skill, all of it. Oh and the upcycle. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for reminding the world that there are those who love beautifully grained solid wood furniture but are stuck with pictures on pressed board. I was frankly amazed that you turned such landfill fodder into a completely presentable piece furniture. Wow!
Thank you so much!!
I love this! I’m going to move soon and this is really good information to have because I’ll be furnishing on a budget. 💗💗💗 thanks, Angie!
I'm so glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
You took something inexpensive and made it into a project that's pleasing to the eye. Green being one of my favorite colors, I love it.
Thanks so much for watching!
Love this! Yes, I could afford a nice piece but I’d rather get something previously owned and discarded for whatever reason and turn it into something I can use. And Nacho is so adorable…bringing you his ball. Too cute
Something you can use, make your own AND keep out of the trash. Seems like a win all around! Thanks so much for watching!
You are one excellent and thoughtful teacher. I love the care and attention you gave this ugly duckling. You're so right not everyone can afford or have access to full wood furniture. This a new lease on life to these pieces.
Thanks so much Peggy!
Hi Angie, that was a challenge . The whole time I’m 😢saying. I would never do that. I tossed out a few items because some else said they were useless. What potential I see in your presentation. I have not seen such saving grace. I learned how to restore the rusted parts. And the Bondo. Like WOW😮 !!! Thanks for your time and talent.
You're very welcome! 😊
I appreciate that you put the same attention to detail and careful work to this inexpensive cabinet as you do your other work. I loved your video and your money saving ideas if we want to do something similar. I am so impressed with Nacho! He fetches!! Much better than my dog, I might add.
Thanks so much for watching Lori!
You are so modest! Of course this was a jaw dropper! You did an amazing job on what most people would just toss into the trash! It turned out beautifully, and now I'm looking at a few pieces in my basement with a different eye!!!! Thanks for sharing!
Yay, I'm glad I could inspire you! Thanks for watching!
I like what you did with this piece. It shows that it doesn't have to be an expensive wood piece.
Thanks so much!
Thank you Angie for this vid. Not everyone has room or budget for power tools so this little 'how to' was great. Such a great way to reinvent a much used item.
I had a 'retrieving' cat too, however she only retrieved small hair rollers! Nacho has the ball thing down pat 🐈 🔴
Thanks so much for watching!
Actually this was jaw dropping if you consider what you started with. I would love to see you do more of these cheap renovations they are so inspiring and helpful💖
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving feedback! Much appreciated!
Lovely makeover!! I just did a small 60s teak coffee table fix & flip! Love this side hustle 🙏🏻♥️ Keep it up!!
No side hustle here - the furniture and UA-cam are my full time job. 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
I love that you give advice on how to upcycle cheaper pieces, but...Nacho playing fetch is EVERYTHING!!! ❤
Isn't he adorable??? 😺
Glad you did a lower cost item and used and pointed out lower cost tools and supplies to use.. 👏
Thanks so much for watching!
This piece turned out really pretty, and you did a great job explaining the process and the low cost supplies. That said, Nacho is the star of this video! How on earth did you teach him to fetch? My cats are the boss of me 😂. They tell me what to do…pet me, scratch me, I’m bored, etc. enough said.
With cats it seems to happen organically, the ones who want to fetch that is. You throw a toy for them and they think its fun so they bring it back to you and you throw it again. But then they have a lightbulb moment where they realize "Hey if I bring this back to Mom, she'll keep throwing it!" Thanks so much for watching!
Love how you showed how to do this piece on a budget. It's going to make a great unit for someone!❤️
Absolutely!! Thanks for watching!
My Mom had one similar to this in a blonde finish, still in excellent shape,. It has two sliding glass doors. Looks like you did a nice job saving this from the landfill and giving it a second life.
Thank you so much Darlene!
I think this came out quite nice. Amazing it's the same piece of furniture you started out with and and the way it looks now. Congrats...great job.
Thanks so much!
Wow ! You are a miracle worker ! Well done my lovely , most people would have passed it by ....its gorgeous xxx
Thanks so much!
Hi Angie!! You are an absolute magician. I know that this was a simple refinish for you. But it turned out GORGEOUS!
And look at that Nacho go! I love it! Our Kitty, Kiara, would fetch the little mouse cat toys and bring them back. She’s gotten older and doesn’t do it too much anymore. But at night when we’d go to bed, she would bring us the mice and my boyfriend would throw them down the hall. She’s the first kitty I ever had that would fetch! So cute and fun. You go Nacho!!!❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. I actually have a stand almost identical to this! I keep it because it was my grandparents, and I don't have hardly anything of theirs. Mine has the doors, but is missing the middle shelf. And it has several dings and gauges.... now I know how to fix it!! ❤
I'm so glad I could help!! 😀
Great job and save. I just picked up a table off the side of the road for upcoming challenge. Never did that before. Grabbed it and ran, I don't know why. Got it home and it's pretty much mdf in bad shape. Your vid gave me some encouragement to flip it anyway.
You can do it! I'm glad I could give you some ideas. Thanks for watching!
That's a very useful a pretty piece of furniture now. It's narrow, so ideal in a hallway for keys, shoes etc. Great in a kids room for toys and books. Even good in a bathroom for baskets of toiletries, loo roll, folded towels.
All excellent ideas. Thanks so much for watching!
I'm in love with Nacho. What a precious baby bean.
You're so welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching!
What an artist!! ❤ And I love that you explain everything you do, and why
I'm so glad you enjoy my content, it means a lot!
Amazing transformation Angie.
Thank you so much Susan!
Nacho 🥰
Thanks for the upload Angie, very nice tips for affordable options. 👍
You’re welcome 😊 Thanks for watching!
Wow! Great work as usual, and another save from the landfill! I love the color!
I'm so glad! Thanks so much for watching!
I love it! That sad little bookcase looks so happy now…lol! 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for watching!
NACHO PLAYS FETCH!? That's amazing! (Also, great job salvaging this one - you definitely gave it another life.)
He sure does! Thank you so much for watching! 😺😊
I'm not a tattoo gal, but I love all the bright colors on your tats! If I was able to change them out, I'd get bright, pretty tata.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome turn-around on that little shelf!
Thank you very much!
I love it! There you are again working with pressed wood. That's how I found your channel originally.😊 Bought press board cabinet for $4.99 at goodwill and hardware alone was probably worth more than $30. Just adding wood pieces increases quality and price!
Awesome! Thank you!
Love the finished result
Thank you!
Awesome transformation.
Thank you! 😊
I love your work and your videos! I wish I could get into restoring furniture…I love wood! Just lack the time and money/equipment. But I’m watching your videos for when I’m able to get into it I’ll be more knowledgeable :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for saving this humble piece and elevating it for someone else :-D
Thank YOU for watching! 😊
That is a great transformation.
Thanks so much!
nice piece. Nacho has the most beautiful markings.
Thank you very much! He's gorgeous isn't he? 😺
Wow! Beautiful job! I never expected! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Looks a thousand times better! Great budget tips too.
Wondering how much the charity auction got for it.
Thanks for watching!
My mom had a calico cat that loved to fetch and bring the ball back for me to throw it again! Nacho is so cool!
Thank you so much for watching! 😺
This color is almost exactly like the color of my moms HOUSE. She found some moss on some bark that was really close to this and yea... her whole HOUSE is now this color. Very Dark Green shutters, doors and the wrought iron railings... it's a really good look. So yea... I like this color.
Also... the world needs more Nacho.
Your Mom's house sounds gorgeous! Nacho 100% agrees with you and tries for more screen time every video. 😊😺 Thanks for watching!
I've watched a number of your videos, and it looks like you need a buffer/wire wheel for metal parts. Take a look into how to hold a drill in a vice and add whatever attachments you need. Just my .02
This video wasn’t about necessarily the most efficient way to do things. I have a multi tool with wire wheels etc. (I’ve used it in multiple videos). This video is for people who don’t have access to special tools, and to do things with materials most people already have at home.
Skill of a surgeon!
Awe, thank you! 😊
thank you so much
I learn so much from you and i am excited to try a piece of furniture
I'm so glad to hear this Karen! Best of luck with your piece. Thanks for watching!
I was hoping for a Nacho moment. He is just adorable 🥰
Wish granted! 😊😺 Thanks for watching!
Oh Nacho! Sweet boy! My first cat I ever had, long haired black cat loved playing fetch and once tapped thru my fingernail trying to tell me to throw the make up sponge for her, I threw it up to the popcorn ceiling and it stuck until she parkoured up there and retrieved it. The piece is amazing! Noice!
Oh cats and their parkour! (Am I the only one who hears Michael Scott yelling it in my head every time I see a cat do it?) Thanks so much for watching!
Nice Job! Love the look!
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Now THAT’S incredible!!!
Awe, thank you so much!
Very helpful and useful video - thank you!
Thank you very much!
Where I live my used cherry shelf costed less than the paint used in this video.
That’s where YOU live. It’s not like that everywhere.
I love the guitar music.
Thank you!
Another great project!
Thank you very much!
It's just stunning. Trash to treasure.
Thank you so much!
Mid century furniture is popular right now, so someone will like it
Thanks for watching!
Baking soda and vinegar mixed together cancel each other out and basically leave you with plain water. I'd soak the parts in the vinegar for about 24 hours and then scrub with steel wool.
That’s only partially true. Baking soda and vinegar is an age old cleaning recipe that is fantastic for tough grime, cleaning drains, and cleaning rust. The chemical reaction is strong but natural, so it’s a safer alternative than some actual chemical cleaners. So yes, one is basic and the other alkaline but there’s an awful lot that goes on before it becomes inert.
Also, these WERE soaked in vinegar prior to being scrubbed with the baking soda.
Are you using cleaning vinegar or regular distilled?
This was cleaning vinegar, but I've done the same with regular. The cleaning vinegar does a bit better of a job, of course, where it's a bit stronger. Great question! I totally should have mentioned that in the video.
All levels of income and ability are considered. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Love kitties that play ball.
Me too! 😊 Thanks for watching!
Very nice
Thank you!
Hey Angie, do you ever see Burrell as a painted wood grain? I bought a piece on Marketplace that doesn't "feel" real. But I haven't seen painted Burrell before. Only paid $40. But she claimed it was more high end.
By the way I love watching nacho fetch his ball. What a good boy.🐈
I've never personally seen painted Burl however I have seen painted faux Quarter Sawn Oak. (Which was pretty common about 100 years ago). But I have seen a desk that had a printed faux Burl. If you have a magnifying glass, you can examine it closer. Thanks for watching!
So cute ❤
Thank you so much for watching!
Years ago my cat used to play fetch using a fake fur mouse toy. One day he caught a real mouse and brought that to me to play fetch, as usual he put it down and then looked up at me expecting me to throw it. Obviously the mouse ran off the moment he was free and the look of puzzlement on my cat’s face when I didn’t move but the mouse was gone still makes me laugh! (You’ll be happy to know I caught and released the unharmed mouse later.)
😆😆I can only imagine his confusion!! Thank you so much for watching!
Saved!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Your awesome! 🐝
Thank you very much! 🙂
This is what I do a lot of. I choose pieces that won’t be high end but when I am finished they are clean, serviceable and hopefully, fun. I usually gift to those who need a piece of furniture and can’t afford something new or upscale. Thanks for reminding us that anything can be reimagined and reused.
Ok I really love that. You're incredible! What a fantastic pick-me-up for someone. Thank you for watching and thank you for being you!!! ❤️
You are awesome!!!
And one thing less in the landfill. Turned out very nice !! Would good be a great starter piece for a young family !!!
Good on you! I’ve been wanting to this kind of thing for years, but I need a bigger place first! 😂❤
That’s a good idea.
What a cute little piece, and this video is a great reminder that something doesn't have to be solid wood or expensive to be useful and pretty. This little cabinet still has a little life left in her and I'm sure that whomever ends up with her will be thrilled. Thanks for showing us that just about anything can be saved.
I like giving people some ideas of ways to fix a piece up. Not everything has to be expensive to look good. 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
Well said!
My sentiments exactly. ❤
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I
I really love that you've shown how to refurnish cheaper pieces in realistic ways! It's awesome to save usable stuff like this from the trash. Hopefully you're able to fit in more content like this sometime :)
Thanks for watching!
I love that you always take the time to stage and film your pieces from every angle, it’s just so satisfying.
I'm so glad you enjoy my content. Thanks for watching!
Yes! I agree!
Years ago I had a cat, Frisbee. I opened a beer bottle one day and the cap skittered down the hall. She took off, grabbed it, came back and dropped at my feet. We played that game for the next 14 years.
Such a freakin talent!
You actually turned a turd into something that someone would love to have in their home especially on a budget.
And you added interest to the peace by painting the backboard the way you did.
Added interest to the bookshelf.
Excellent teaching video for those on a budget.
Proves you can still have nice things if the budget is low. 😍👍
Thanks so much for watching James!
I love that you reused the staples, because a heavy-duty staple gun can be pricey, and if we're keeping to the budget idea, that's a great tip. Also the love you gave to the legs. My brother is a custom cabinetmaker, and whenever there's a piece in the trash with really nice, wooden or metal legs, he's trained the whole family to run out and grab them, because they often are the only things worth salvaging and can make lots of other pieces look terrific.
I try to reuse and repurpose everywhere I can. Anything I can save is a win! Your brother is a smart man enlisting family help, I love it! Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Half the reason I watch your channel is your kindness. Whether you are showing others at all skill levels and pocket books how they too can have something beautiful - or rescuing bunnies - or saving the planet by saving old furniture from the landfill, your kindness is a beautiful thing. Of course the other reason I watch is the jaw dropping furniture makeovers!!! Your creativity and skill are amazing!
Wow Ann, thank you so much! I really appreciate your support and kind words.❤️
Another AMAZING job!! Watched this twice. It was so kind of you to donate it, shows you go beyond saving the "unsalvageable". As always, I love the outcome. Super great that you gave instructions for those of us without power tools and a professional workshop like yourself. Angie, you are the best!!
Thank you so much Christine!! 😊
What a great video to show you can have pretty furniture without all the expensive tools, cleaners, and paint. Thanks for doing this. 💜
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
This was a delightful process! Your design for the back piece (I call it 'backerboard'), definitely kicked it up a few levels. Subtle yet so very effective. Initially I was thinking it could be handy shoe storage but the finished piece made me decide it would also be a lovely addition to a foyer, dining room, Great Room, etc. Beautiful work, as always.
Thanks so much for watching!
What a wonderful reminder that just because something is older or a little on the cheaper side and worse for wear, it can still be transformed into something perfectly attractive and functional. I think it turned into a cute little piece that anyone would be happy to display in their home. Thank you Angie, for saving another one from being thrown away, when it just needed a little TLC.
Thank you for always watching and being so incredibly supportive. You are appreciated!!
Although this piece may be small, the transformation is still incredible. It’s amazing what a little imagination and some paint can do to something that may be looked over because of its flaws. You did an awesome job and I have no doubt someone will love this piece!💕
Thanks so much for watching!
I have to contradict you - it’s still pretty darn jaw-dropping! 😁 Love that you donated it! 🥰
I'll allow that type of contradiction. 😉Thanks for watching!
Love your thoughtful, practical and beautiful re-imagining of this little piece. She's so happy now, to have evolved dramatically with your vision and skill. Totally 'transcend'-ental.
I like what you did there! Thank you so much for watching!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery 😂
I NEVER thought of using automotive body filler for filling chunks! What a clever trick! Beautiful job on this piece, by the way! And thanks for sharing thrifty ways to upscale a beat up piece of lower-quality furniture!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
wow what a beautiful job you did again. I love the idea of what you did with the back wall. Love your work and videos and I love Nacho 😍😘
Thank you so much Connie!
Angie, you are such a gem. You've given us a gift by showing how to take a super inexpensive piece, save as much of it (including staples!) as possible, make a cute design with simple masking tape, and stain wood with coffee, for a great result. As you said, there is no shame in needing to budget, and you have made it into an art here.
Thank you so much!
This transformation is AMAZING! Angie, this video was so helpful! Everything you do is amazing, whether you paint or restore, but all the tips, the repairs needed for this piece are so valuable! The color you chose is so beautiful against the brown tones. The design on the back makes the piece look of high quality! This was a candidate for the ugly duckling challenge! Nacho is so cute and has an aborable naughty expression ! Thanks so much for sharing. I always enjoy your videos and learn new things.
I'm so glad you find my content helpful Sophia! Thanks so much for watching! 😺
So glad to see a video like this. Many people who would have thrown pieces like that out, might now also consider giving it a longer life this way. Thank you!
I'm glad I could help people look at pieces in a different light! 😊
I love the way you take these sad things and turn them into furniture again. It’s amazing how much your very simple tape geometric elevates this bookcase. The color is gorgeous! The care you take with the furniture you work on is one of my favorite things to watch.🌸
As your comments are some of my very favorite to read Deborah! You are always so kind and supportive. Thank you so very much for watching and taking the time to always leave these lovely notes. I appreciate you!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery thank you! I always look forward to your videos, Angie. I’m really glad you’re sharing your gifts and talents with all of us. I appreciate you, too.🌸
I was totally inspired by your tutorial today! You are a born teacher, Angie. Watching the transformation of this little piece in a straightforward, step by step way made the process of refinishing furniture look much less intimidating. We’re downsizing and will be moving soon to a mid-century modern house and I had planned to either donate or sell pieces of furniture that I’ve had for years because I want a more updated style. However, your demonstration today encourages me to take another look at the pieces I have and reimagine them to fit my new style. Thank you SO much! 👍
Hope you enjoy your mid-century house! Great idea about the furniture, I will do the same.
See, I love that! I'm so glad I could give you some ideas Cindy! Thanks for watching!
Considering what this piece looked like before, it is still a jaw dropping transformation. And thanks for doing it with many items that are either inexpensive or easy to source for everyone that doesn't think they can have "nice stuff"! A total 10!
Thank you very much!
As always, it IS a wow factor! Thanks for showing us that the cheap stuff can still be salvaged and made to look nice.
I remember being the post college student on a budget many years ago. This is a perfect example of how to make things aesthetically pleasing on a small budget!
❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching!
This is a great example of why you’re one of my favorite furniture restorers on YT!!! What a beautiful teaching video.
Very, very nice! I hate seeing people throw these things away because yes, they can be transformed for someone else. They CAN be beautiful as well. Thanks for your work. Nacho is so sweet and he looked tuckered out chasing the little ball, lol.
He'd have you believe he was tuckered lol. He'll actually fetch for quite a while before tapping out. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it! 😺
