My mom related to this when I showed her this theme as she was born with a South Western specifically Cornish accent, her family grew up poor and when she excelled in school she actually changed her accent because of the stigmatization she faced in British classist society. She said moving away from there felt like it was the only time she felt she escaped the confines of her upbringing determining her life.

Gaius has a native Yorkshire accent. His dad's is West Country (Tiverton, where the actor comes from). It doesn't make much sense so I guess they just conflated rural working class 'farmer' accents.

@@keitht24 The point he was making is that Gaius' real accent, as revealed when he was in the brig talking with chief during BSG show, is actually a completely different accent to the guy who was cast as his dad is speaking in this video clip (different regions of England). i.e. Gaius and Gauis' dad's "real" accents are completely different to one another. If you're not a native Brit, it probably isn't so obvious.

You can see how Caprica six moved beyond being a sentient machine to a living person with an understanding of human emotions and empathy.
She pitties Gaius putting up with his abusive father, yet she also is disgusted by how he is so dismissing of his dad.
She is horrified by the old mans sexism and toxic attitude about how to be a man, yet she also feels sorry for him.
She is beginning to learn humans aren't just sentient meat bags, they are complex beings which the cylons could learn from.
She reminds Gaius he is talking to his father and to respect him.

I was coming here to say, "there's lesson to be learned here, for anyone who cares to pay attention".
Just to add though; his dad wasnt being sexist. He was mocking Gaius. His dad had Gaius pegged for a shallow, self-centred man, who used money and influence to bed women - something we see when Gaius is caught by Six bedding another woman. His shallow nature is shown when he dismisses Six at that point and suggests she has broken into his house ...

...there is such a strange authenticity to this and it must have come from James Callis himself, or the episode's writer must have been. The British are obsessed with accent and status and Baltar's father is recognisably speaking like a Yorkshireman, which is strongly associated with the rustic in Britain. The accent is regarded as provincial, and Baltar himself has adopted The Queen's English (or Caprican in this universe), seen as upper-class accentuation. It shows just how much willpower and determination he really has, despite his treason and cowardice and carnality...

Gaius Baltar is what happens when you take Dr. Smith from Lost in Space and give him the most dramatic arc of anyone in the series. Although as amazing as the character is and as well as he’s written, I don’t know if anyone could have done as good of a job as James Callis. This show never getting Emmy acting nominations isn’t far behind the Wire never getting any for biggest oversights in Emmy history.
