It wasnt just the timing, it was the music that added to it all. It was almost like some comedy sketch, and the way Tigh and Adama both look at the President is just so chuckle worthy
I believe Olmos has a director credit for this episode. Could explain the sudden change. I absolutely loved this episode for the comedic timing of scenes. I also think they were getting pushback from the TV execs asking for more levity in BSG
@@Erroangelos Yup, and the first thing they did when the execs asked for something happy was to write the accident on the flight deck where all the pilots get blown up.

Yes. If anything, this was all to show how loyal Adama was to Tigh, to excuse decisions he'd already made & bad future ones regarding him. As a study on human failings, this series was incredible. I have trouble seeing it all first time around, but looking back, more than LOST, it seems that this was all that the series *was* ever supposed to be. Many episodes & arcs featured no one truly winning.
I know there are alot of fans that hate this episode precisely because of the sit-com slant it took, but honestly, I loved it. Much needed respite from the doom and gloom that we'd been living with up to that point. A moment to sit back and laugh at the ironic hilarity of the situation before they went back to being serious. It was great and it's actually one of my favorite episodes.

They got type-casted. It's why Janeway, Kirk, and Sisko's actors had only limited success after Star Trek, and why half the doctors had no real gigs asides Doctor who.

The fact that over half of the main characters turned out to be Cylons was one of the things that just ruined this series. It always felt to me that the writers just ran out of ideas, and failing to have new ideas, kept returning to the old 'twists' until they weren't even twists any more. Worse, the evolution of the show ended up undermining the good first season, in an example of how bad writing can end up retroactively destroying good writing.

Her intro was designed to make viewers think she was one in order to make you feel the sense of uncertainty and confusion everyone on that fleet must have been feeling knowing any one of them, even friends they know and trust, could actually be a machine working in secret to kill them.
That was during the period when the characters (and audience) thought Cylons could look like anybody, or replace people with Cylon copies. That wasn't actually true.
For such a serious and oftentimes depressing series, with lots of heavy overtones, it's nice that they could do the odd bit of comedy from time to time! Particularly with Baltar 😊
