      @@Taneth You just really notice that there wasn't any preplanning done after the Miniseries. Instead of sitting down and, at least in the broad strokes, mapping out how they wanted the Fleets Journey to go and why the Cylons did what they did they at best planned season by season. And even there likely only the very broad strokes. Until the Series got cancelled and they had to asspull conclusions for every plotpoint they left dangling in front of our faces. The Cylons motivations were botched so bad the creators had to make a Movie to TRY and explain them, only to fail to archieve that. "They have a Plan" turned into "Everybody is just following their chaotic instincts, unless God influences things, and Cavill is a Child throwing a Temper tantrum"
      I do like larger Chunks of the show, but the infuriating last season and the Botched potential really sour it for me in some ways. Imagine if BSG had as much planning and forethoguht put into it as Babylon 5, how magnificient that show would have been.

    The only really silly thing about BSG was the use of skilled pilots as grunt infantry, its a common sci fi trope but hard to avoid as you need star characters

    • @GrasshopperKelly
      @GrasshopperKelly 2 роки тому +8

      Well... it makes sense in stuff based on 20th+ century Earth. Air force ranks and officers taking infantry duties. Although even in Stargate, not too long before the global SG program is establish, the US starts using Navy marines, and with the Global SG initiative, they start extensively using Marines, and Army ranks and officers, especially on international projects, like Atlantis.
      There's a lot of background extras in Army uniforms with Canadian patches in mid season one, till the last episode stationed on Atlantis. British, German, French and Russian patches can be seen in different episodes too.
      Low number, high skill away teams are ofc the usual "star" cast. Like SG-1 and SGA-1.
      Tau'ri ships ofc still use Airforce pilots, along with Marines, and a combination of Airforce and Navy service crews (such as engineers, cooks, hanger crews etc.
      It's a really small, and easily skippable detail, that the SG series writers and directors could have ignored and never had a second thought about. But they took the time as the seasons went on, and it happened at a rate that even makes sense from an in universe perspective.

      Its not really silly. We can assume all crew aboard a battlestar got at least some combat training to this regard. Boarding exists in this universe so every crew member needs to be trained to defend the ship. Especially because their enemy doesnt take prisoners or shows mercy. The amrines cant be everywhere on the battlestar and propably are stationed at the most vital facilities so if a cylon landing pot breeches some random hangar it is very likely the first defenders they will engage are normal ship crew like mechanics or staff until the marines have been informed of the bording position and have arrived there to engage the boarding force properly.
      The way boarding comnbat works in most scify universes is basically the same way it worked in the 17th century naval warfare, where all hands of a ship would fight in boarding actions from the cook to the marine infantery.
      If boarding in a scify universe exists as a tactic, it is plausable that every crewmember is trained and expected to fight as infantery to defend the ship.
      The "why are pilots grunt infantery" mindest comes from 21th century warfare where boarding doesnt exist anymore. Also the series made pretty clear at this point that all vipers have crews and basically everyone that volunteered and is left gets a gun in his hand. Its a last ditch all or nothing assault.

BSG is very post-modern in its acceptance of the dark motives of humans, but even here many of the main characters undergo conversion in Season 4: Starbuck regarding the relationship with her parents, Gaius escapes narcissism, Apollo changes his opinion of Gaius, etc. I love the way Gaius grabs Caprica's coat and pulls her in for a passionate kiss. @@stoffni Yes, the Cylons committed genocide; just as the humans attempted in season three: the humans just failed at it.
      As the show progressed the Cylons became more and more humanized, while the humans began behaving more and more inhuman, blurring the line on who was the bad guy and who the good guy. Are the humans good guys just because they're humans? What does it say about us that we're okay with genocide as long as it's humans committing it? Are there good Cylons and bad Cylons? Are there good humans and bad humans? Do we blame all of the Cylons for the genocide? How is that different from Cylons judging all humans as evil? Is there any account for remorse for what they've done? How much of their humanity can the humans lose and still be worthy of survival? @@asvarien no worry wasn't a dig on first glance it looks like a SMG but they were designed for tank crews and such originally as body armour was becoming common place.

    I always wondered why Athena put a bunch of rounds in Boomers gut. Were they hinting at something there? Or was it just payback for Adama, or just rage?

      matthew greenwood I understand how Athena feels, but it's hard to imagine any act that would count more as making amends than defying Cavil and returning Hera to her mom. And she gets shot for her trouble.
