One of the most imporatnt things we can do in After Effects to save time and order up our project is using PRE-COMPOSITIONS to arrange certain objects into one container. Precomposing in After Effects allows us to group objects, nest compositions and precompose several layers into one (new) compositoin. This frees up our working area, separates files from each other and allows us to combine elements and apply effects to them in bulk.

loved how u got right down to it, without all the corny jokes that other tut channels make us sit thru. subscribed
I'm glad my straight to the point tutorial was appealing to you :) Thanks for the nice comment!
the corny joke part is so accurate lmao
dude u taught me so much in so little time. Why did I spend thousands on college if I could come here
Haha thank you so much mate. Well that's the problem with academic learning, it's a good life experience but you basically learn nothing and time passes and if you don't learn yourself your doomed. Glad you checked out the tutorial :)
After days of muddling through creating my first UI animation, this just made the idea of animating a billion layers WAY less impossible. Thanks!
Hah awesome, yeah you have to keep it organized, else it's a big pain!
Every tutorial should be this awesome. Straight to the point, easy to follow and he even gives you homework to do!
Too kind of you my friend. Yeah I remember at the beginning when using AE it was hard to understand so I knew approximately how I want this tutorial to look like :)
4 years later and this video is still extremely useful. Thank you!
Glad to hear it!
6years for me
Even though I'm not an English speaker, the way you explain is so clean and straight to the point that i easily got it. Thanks for all you taught me, loved it!
Very nice to hear that you understood me well, thank you!

Yeah it's a very important and complex topic but once you understand it you get a lot better in AE :)
Thank you! I am learning After Effects but some others get too wordy.
That is so nice to hear, thank you very much and I hope you learn AE very quickly!
Thanks, simple and easy to understand. Straight to the point. Now I understand what a pre comp is.
Awesome to hear that. Yeah, it's simple but we really need to understand the core what it's all about
Thank you SO MUCH for getting to the good stuff and not making me jump through 90 seconds of credits, intros, and more!
Amen, glad someone notices that in my videos haha, thanks!
I'm very impressed by how well you explained everything. Thank you!
You’re welcome @rolfmegaj😊 Thank you for leaving a comment and helping me out as well!

Thank you so much! I didn't know how to change the duration of a composition! :)
You're welcome 😊 CTRL+K and change is the way to go :)
For once i find an actual straight to the point tutorial with simple shortcuts and everything really helpful because most videos don't have voice overs they use siri for the voice but this made my day you got a new follow!
Thank you Mahmoud, appreciate the kind words about the tutorial, I always try to make them to the point but you know how it is, people ask for subs etc and drift away from the topic haha
Problme resolved. Great job here, sir! Thanks!
You're welcome!
quick, to the point, expert. subscribed
That is very kind of you, thanks! :)
This was good and clear
Exactly how a tutorial should be ^^ Thanks
I had no idea about the collapse transformation option thank you so much xD
Ur welcome, there are so many tools in AE you will slowly explore them and also forget about half of them haha
Very understandable !
Thank you very much Sjkuksee! Appreciate you watching and commenting, that helps! :)
Awesome video!! Thank you for these tips!
Thanks, nice to hear that :)
Thanks, this was very well explained.
You are welcome, glad the tutorial did help!
Short and clear!
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial
They are like Smart objects in PSD. I saw someone describe them as 'grouping" layers but that is not accurate, more like Smart Objects with a separate editing window.
Interesting way to look at it, well I still feel them more as groups, I think there isn't a 100% direct comparison, you just have to test it out and work with them :D Thanks for commenting
Literally got the solution that I was looking for. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Clean demo. Thank you
Thank you too!
THANKS MAN
You are welcome :) Glad it helps

Brilliant video thank you.
Very welcome
very helpful, thank you
You're welcome!
Im an idiot, for ages I've been animating scenes that take about 500 layers (literally), when I could've used this to break down that insanity... just try and find a shape layer you need in a haystack of them!
Pre-comps are a must!!!!! always!!
Thank you!
Welcome!
Thank you man 🙏
Thank you very much NekoImpact! Appreciate you watching and commenting, that helps! :)

Welcome
Great info, dude!
Thanks Gregory. You can find a lots more both on my channel and in my courses :)
Can you un-precompose a pre-composition?
Yes of course, you can ctrl+C and ctrl+V the layers inside a comp and then just delete the comp from the Timeline and the project window on the left side if you want to get completely rid of the pre-comp!
u rock
You are too nice
every time i try to precompose my clips, the app just glitches and it closes, also loosing the things i created. how do i fix this problem?
Wow damn bro that's the absolute most disgusting annoying and cruel error you can get. Don't worry let's tackle it right by the cohones. We have to go into your preferences and reset all it's options and clear the cache right away. I hope you are okay with your settings beeing reset. Go to EDIT > PREFERENCES and go to Media & Disk Cache. Empty the Disk Cache and clear any Database & Cache files. Now Quit After Effects, hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift and click on your after effects shortcut to start it. It will ask you if you want to reset the soft. Try precomposing now, if not you will have to go to the Adobe Forums for help but they probably tell you to reset as I did and to reinstall the software. Let me know please if it did help!
andrew pach same with me
Thank you man i love you
That is so nice to hear, I hope that tutorial did help!
great video, very helpful!
Thank you mate. New tutorials will be added to my "After Effects Channel•" so AE tutorials will have their own space :)
Amazing Tutorial! Thank you
Thank you very much @CherryGummy-kk6li! Appreciate you watching and commenting, that helps! :)
Thanks so much!!
You are welcome, glad it helped! That's one of the lessons in my big AE course :)
Thanks man do you have any lesson's for a biginner..? am just starting on after effects and i like the way you explain things is very helpful and brilliant ...
Hey mate, of course. I do have lessons for a beginner on my second, totally about After Effects channel here: ua-cam.com/channels/iIs_XfIl__ufojb4hO-ETQ.html
and in my premium course for beginners! It would be the perfect one to learn AE from scratch to intermediate user. The link to my course is in the tutorial you watched, here: ua-cam.com/users/redirect?v=xLcSAfNAAzw&event=video_description&redir_token=YBEYocp5cOXXM1T0WFFeBCB36uV8MTUwODg4MjMyOEAxNTA4Nzk1OTI4&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.udemy.com%2Faftereffects-beginners-complete%2F%3FcouponCode%3DAwesomeStudentYT
I came here to ask a question - when I precompose layers, "Move all attributes" is unselectable. It says it's selectable but the button doesn't select :( Please help.
Hey mate, this is simple, because if you have some attributes set (like for example having the Motion Blur selected for a layer) or making the layer an Adjustment Layer when you simply precompose it - it will put the layers you selected inside a new comp and the PRECOMP will get those attributes. If you select MOVE all attributes INTO the composition they will remain on the layer instead of beeing put on the comp. Perhaps in the older versions it's greyed out when you have no attributes set, but it's impossible that it doesn't work properly. If it does, you need to reset your AE settings! Hope that helps :)
Thank u
No problem
DUDE PLEASE HELP I DONT HAVE “adjust composition duration”
CTRL+K to enter composition options and there you can adjust its duration!
Big thanks!
You are very welcome :)
Thx
No problem
I was applying Twixtor to my clip but after the work my clip was of same duration , it got trimmed. Is the solution to this is pre-compose
I'm not sure you say "your clip was of the same duration, it got trimmed" so is it trimmed or stayed the same? I think precompose might not be the only solution. Maybe use time remapping to extend it back again if needed. If you decide to precompose it, right click on that precompose -> Time > Enable time remapping and you could drag it out if needed!
cool
Thank you, glad it helps!
Hi can you help me ? If we use auto trace in after effects how do we add 3D effect layer to my logo / text animation ? I have duplicated layers in 3D space but my animation is still flat.
I think you need to enable 3D first on the object, but I assume you did since you have some 3d movement. This way the Z axis movement should be traced as well. There shouldn't be any problem adding an 3d effect layer that follows your traced object as long as you make sure that you enable 3D (the little box on the timeline) for that particular layer as well.
Really helpful
Thanks :)
so is it pretty much premiere pro nesting but on after effects?
Yes! all programs have some sort of "grouping". Precomps can be advanced because they work as a separate instance which you can separately animated and influence with effects.
I understand Pre-compostions well, but I want to know if there a way I can move layers that are inside of a pre-comp and move those layers into a different pre-comp. Because I dont want to re-make those layers again.
Hm yes sure, you can select a layer and press CTRL+C or even CTRL+X if you want to cut it out and just CTRL+V inside another comp, should work!
when I have a screen blending mode (removing the black bg) and pre compose, it just won't add that blending mode anymore. how I fix this?
From what I know the pre-composition will maintain the blending mode but you can't expect this blending mode to yield the exact same results as the layer had. Just go inside that pre-comp and give the blending mode to the layer again so everything will be as before. Switch the blending mode of your precomp to normal or let it stay as is depending on the situation.
In AE how do you "pre-bake" movement in a Pre-composition?
I have stabilized some high shutter speed footage on a point track. I have pre-comped the footage, the null object and transform movement that stabilizes the footage.
But when I apply Force Motion Blur or Pixel Motion Blur to the precomp in the top Comp it blurs the image from the transform movement within the precomp, not the movement on screen.
I have already looked at a few tutorials and this seems to be one of those things that is so simple that no one talks about it. Like just click this toggle in this buried menu. The only thing I can think of is to export the precomp and bring it back into the project.
A effect is applied to the layer of your choice - if you chose the precomp to be motion blurred it will blur the entirety of it and its layers inside.
You can either keyframe the effect itself in its blur value (so the blur value goes up and down) but that would be tedious. Another way is to use the build-in motion blur property of the entire comp (ctrl+k -> advanced > there you have the shutter amount of the motion blur) but that will limit what you see to this one value. Remember to enable motion blur for the comp itself.
@@andrewpach is that in the Comp’s properties? I just wanna blur the final output that is seen.
pls help me how do u select them both at the same time?!?!!? pls answer
You can hit CTRL and just click on each thing or composition you need to select.
@@andrewpach ok ty but i have another question, can i ask you that?
Is there a way to have the crop wrap around the comp? sometimes I'll precompose a little button but its crop is the entire final comp width and height and i cant select other things
Yes it actually is possible. You need to select a little button under the main window where you see the composition called REGION OF INTEREST (you can google a tutorial about it) and then just hit Composition from the top menu and select > Crop to Region of Interest) and it will crop to your selection.
Is there a way to Pre-compose some certain layers on the Original Composition, but when you Pre-compose it, the Composition size is the dimension of those selected layers only.
Not the Original Composition. Think of it like a Group on Photoshop. Is that possible right now?
You can use the Trim to Area of Interest function which is useful. You make a cropping around your layer and then you can "trim comp to that area of interest". There is also a script which is $10 from what I see on AEscrips which you could look into if you REALLY need that function aescripts.com/pt_cropprecomps/
this might be a ridiculous question but how do i undo a precomposition? like if i precomp a clip how do i undo the precomp?
You don't "un-precompose" you just delete a composition. The clip you dragged in will be still available on the left top side of AE in your project window. You can delete that composition from the top left side as well if you want to completely get rid of it.
Thank you, it was helpful..,
That is awesome to hear ! cheers:)
The adjust composition duration doesn't show up when I pre-compose, please help
Press CTRL+K and you will enter into composition options and adjust it there
what's the recompose shortcut please tell bro
Precompose Selected Layers: Ctrl + Shift + C
@@andrewpach do recompose and precompose same bro ??
But how do I edit the precomposition and still see the main composition???
You just double click on it to enter inside that precomposition :) You can always just open up the main composition at any given time. Making a new pre-comp just adds another pre-comp to your project. All previous elements are still available.
@@andrewpach You see, when I change to precomp editing I cannot see where the remaining objects in the main composition are. This makes for a very frustrating experience because many times I want the objects inside the precomp to align in the main comp.
Like for example in Adobe Animate they have the Movie Clip object, which somewhat acts like the precomp but allows you to double click it, graying out the remaining objects but allowing edition in-context. I hoped something like that existed for AE =/
Seems you are just going wrong about it! Just position everything on the original comp and then press CTRL+ALT+C to precomp it. Or just drag and drop it into an existing comp it should fall in place and not changing its position values. If you just drag and drop it from the main comp on the timeline inside an existing comp on the timeline nothing will move. Don't worry it works like it should, just a matter of checking and training a little with it!
gud video
Thank you !
Bro can I ask you a question I know it is little bit cheesy but, does precomposition takes space in my hard drive because I have very low space?
No, a pre-comp doesn't take up space because it is a part of the After Effects PROJECT file. The project file will grow with the amount of items and pre-comps in it but these are marginal growths by a few kilobytes so no, it doesn't
@@andrewpach oh ok thanks for helping ❤️
Pre-comp doesn't keep block's transparency after grouping.
You can also set the opacity for the actual pre-comp in case that is neccesary. However I cannot agree to this statement. If you set the opacity of a layer and then precomp this layer it will keep it's transparency (opacity) levels since that particular property stays the same
thx so much
Thank you very much Psychic AMVs! Appreciate you watching and commenting, that helps! :)
@@andrewpach np keep it up!
Is there a way to undo this?
Well of course, you can just remove a pre-comp or remove items from it. There is no point in un-doing (but you can do that right after creating a precomp). A precomp is just a container so it doesn't affect your project in any way other than making it bigger by having 1 element more in it :)
how to close the precompose group without delete it if i need to rearrange all the element?
Just press the little (X) button. You will only delete the composition, if you hit DELETE on the left side in the project window, else it won't get deleted :)
Why no one teach about managing timing when pre composing? In animation timing comes first then spacing
You are right, but this tutorial focused on the technical aspect of pre-comping in itself.
Say if you wanted to change the text, so from saying Red to saying Blue?
Then you would select the color property on the text and change it :) You would select the text, you would click CTRL+T and in the Character pane just change the color
@@andrewpach Thank you for that but I meant as in let's say the text displays Red and you want to change what the text says to "LapTop" as an example?
I'm not sure what are you asking about. You mean change one comp with another comp ? You would need to animate (for example fade off) one text and then fade in another text, for example that would be one way of doing that. You could press T and use the opacity property
@@andrewpach Lets say that you have the text all written out as "EXAMPLE 1" but then if you wanted to change it later down the line to "Example 2" how would you do that?
I saw that you were able to click on your composition and then edit the individual layers. However, when I click on a layer inside my composition, the layer is highlighted but I am unable to edit it. Do you know what the problem is?
You are able to edit the layer which you select, maybe you just have turned off your "Toggle Mask and Shape Path Visibility" button and it appears as it would not be selected, but it is. Check that out
when i double click, it dosent open the composition what do i do
I don't think that is possible, if something is a composition and you have it on the left side in your Project panel double clicking should take you inside that composition. You could try and reset your view on the top right hand side of after effects because maybe you closed the main preview window. Click on Window > and select Composition: (none) on the bottom half of the listing.
how do i export a precompose file from one project , into another project
FILE > DEPENDENCIES > COLLECT FILES and you can collect that one comp and drop it into another AE file
