Nice and short - just the basic elements I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

3:06 what's your workflow method if you only wanted to turn off one of those rectangles?

When would one use the "Move all attributes into the new composition...." options in the pre-compose screen?

That setting will take all keyframes and effects and move them to the layers inside the pre-composition, instead of applying them to the pre-comp itself. I hope this helps!

Is there a way to select maybe half of the precomps and turn of that line? Or is it all or nothing? Otherwise, I have to make two of these precomps, one with the line on for half of them and one with the line off for the other half. Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's all or nothing. Your idea or making 2 precomps should work. Hope it helps.

Are they necessary? If so why? Under what circumstances are they needed?

You use precomps to group multiple layers, but I notice that many people will pre-comp just one layer. Why do they do that?

They probably don't know, Precomp are always mean to group multiple layer into one layer.

A while back, I watched a tutorial for a very interesting motion tracking software called LOCKDOWN. The advice given was to precompose the single video file that was to be worked on before applying LOCKDOWN to it.
One of the instructions explains it this way:
"The layer that Lockdown is applied to, and the Composition that layer is in, must have the same resolution and framerate for Lockdown to work ... The script will pre-compose your layer and set everything inside the pre-comp to all the correct settings, and you can work with Lockdown in there."
So, there are times when pre-composing a single layer -- rather than a group of layers -- can be useful.
