Several people don't like the lyrics but I think it only adds more. I think it shows what Samus feels inside. She's alone, wandering through endless caverns and ruins by herself. She prefers it that way and yet she still hates it. She will go to sleep every night knowing there is nobody else in her bed to wake up to. That is the burden of the life she lives. Getting close means getting attached and that makes the threat of losing them all too real.
PTSD, abandonment issues, fear of commitment, anger, guilt, a desire for revenge, overcoming her demons and fears by facing them, struggling against her own darkness in the process, her sense of duty, trying to prevent anyone else from experiencing what she's been through, her need for personal redemption, etc. She doesn't back down, for it's almost as if she herself believes she has nothing left to lose. Psychologically, Samus is potentially the most complex character Nintendo has ever created, which has yet to be properly explored. I consider her one of my favourites for this reason.

thats why I consider super metroid to be the appex of the series, it has a majestic ambience of solitude and danger, and a protagonist that doesnt say much but still we understand her mood during the journey.
GIPSY Metroid Prime (the first one anyways) is also like that. Complete solitude. You discover what happened to Talon IV through the carvings from the Chozo. Plus the soundtrack is amazing, particularly the Talon IV Overworld theme as well as the Artifact Temple theme.

Honestly after (forcing myself) replaying through Other M I noticed something. Many people dislike that Samus freaks out at Ridley because she fought him before with seemingly no difficulties. However think about this.
She witnessed Ridley kill her parents.
She witnessed Ridley killing colonists during her time in the federation army and broke down.
She (thought she) witnessed Ridley killing Anthony.
She isn't afraid of Ridley himself.
She is afraid of Ridley killing people she cares about. That's why she broke down. She thought Ridley killed Anthony and it brought her back to the other memories of Ridley killing other people.

I wouldn't be so quick xaneks578, Blacksun does have a good point, but Samus' breakdown against Ridley isn't how the game is decried for "being sexist," it's for how Samus doesn't really have any agency in the game, and how the game presents the relationship between herself and Adam.

Problem is in the way she reacted. The PTSD was played off in a far different light then any metroid franchise, both games and manga, showed. Her PTSD in the manga only happened on their first encounter which is before the events of metroid, and when Ridley talked about how he ate her mother to survive. The PTSD shown wasn't a, pardon my french, whining bitch. Her ptsd was mostly paralyzed and silent hyperventilated and tears. She said a few things ofcourse, but it wasn't as nearly as dramatic as how Other M put it. Not to mention in any other game of metroid Samus never spoke, her emotion was ambiguous and silent, which allowed the player to connect more with Samus. This was also long after at least two battles with ridley, and its been stated and implied that she had gotten over the PTSD before other M even was a thing. While I can imagine that ridley killing anthony would be traumatizng and bring back memories of the parents, the PTSD in other M happened before even Anthony came into the room let alone if Samus was even aware of his presence.
The biggest issue with Samus is that not only did they give her a voice, but her character is very un-relatable to most. It is no longer the immersive adventure played by the mysterious bounty hunter. Instead of unlocking power ups, you are ordered to use them, which completely kills another staple in the metroid formula. Not to mention she can't even activate her varia suit if she is dying in acid.
If other m was say a movie, or manga or some other form of media, i could tolerate it. But as a game with such a mediocre at best story, that is forced down your throat, it pretty much spoils in your mouth, even if the game play is decent. I've noticed that most people who defend Other M haven't really grown up playing other metroid games like super, zero, or prime; which makes sense as they can't see the downgrade the game is from the rest of the serious. However I will never understand the opinion of those that defend Other M that have played other metroid games before/after playing Other M.
This is so fucking good. Reminds me a lot of Transistor, which had incredible music.

metroid is very weird but beautiful imo. its sci-fi but sometimes it drowns my mind in fantasy. the music and artwork is just awesome....
This Is one of the best songs I EVER heard In my whole life. Big cred to the makers and the singer! the song should really be an intro (or outro/ending song) for an Metroid movie imo =)

Ugh, there's just something about Maridia that makes me feels so isolated and cold.
It really is one of the better tracks in SM. Ironically many water level songs usually hit way up there on the epic scale. (eyeing donkey kong country)

@Kingshadowclock YES, it was a bit of a letdown. No 'you have to figure it aaaaalll out for yourself' in the game. Although I like how you get to get inside Samus' head a bit. That was about it though, there was too much direction throughout it for my taste. I like being stuck due to my own stupidity, not due to the boss being too large to kick around. (I.E. the "deleter"s first apearance in that thing that tries to run you over) I NEED THE SCREW ATTACK! :D

@Khyrid Except that'd be maybe half a million people at best against the other 7 billion, and those 7 billion will have most of the guns, armor, and vehicles. Not very good odds. Plus, there are those of us who just like Prime.
they should make a movie of this by one of the games no add they have othere movies like doom and othere movies from the games.

@ratlover523 Agreed I'm one of the ones that LOVED IT at first and then in turn hated it...i waited and waited hopeing for this amazing game with CUTSCENES ZOMG for Metroid! Voice acting and so much more but that was it...no real adventure D: not like the primes anyways....*sigh* oh well X.D however, yah...lets hope there isn't another Other M or if there is...they get it right this time X.D and and have screw attack :p metroids number 1 signature move rofl. :D
