    this is a great video, I'm saddened that you weren't able to do a full rundown of the electrical system, because this is the best-explained video I've seen with step by step instructions.

    Wow! So glad I found this. I have an 86 big red and it’s probably the most reliable/bulletproof atv we have ever owned. Unfortunately it’s been sitting since 2014. That fall I shut off the fuel cock and ran the engine til it stalled. My dad went back to it shortly after and wanted to ride it and that battery was on its way out and he wasn’t going to kick it over. Unfortunately he did turn the fuel back on at that time so I’m sure the carb will need a thorough clean. Been wanting to get it going again for years but it’s been stored at a cabin and you know how it goes don’t want to waste the relaxation time for wrenching. I finally brought it home for the winter and it’s supposed to be my winter project even though we’re well into March now, I’m going to make the time now that I came across this. The only issue that we ever had with this machine is 2 buddies of mine (when we were about 12 years old) wanted to get it started and it had a dead battery at that time too, decided to pull it with another quad and attempt to bump start it (unknown to me at the time) since it’s an auto/clutch that’s not possible, so every hear and there when you’re in 4thish 5thish gears it will make this hellacious grinding/pinging noise the power stops to back wheels and you slow down. If you shift down quickly it comes right back to life. Been wanted to correct that for years but figured it’s something deeper with the gears/transmission area, somewhere I’m not familiar with, and due to its age and how it often it gets ridden we’ve just dealt with it. Where would even the right direction be on looking into that? Thanks.

    I've watch other vedio on how to troubleshoot this same three wheeler and I hated it. But vedio is the best outstanding demonstration vedio I have ever listen to. Job well done my man.

    Informative video with great content for your subscribers especially the point of testing and trying to start which appears to have saved you a lot of time since it was only a bad connection from the exciter connector.

    The primary coil should check out at 0.18 ohms +/- 0.018 ohms. Roughly 00.2 ohms.
    The secondary coil, with spark plug cap on, as seen and tested in this video, should check out at 9.1 Kohms +/- 1.66 Kohms. (That's straight from the Honda Big Red 250es service manual.)

      @@sandymello6050 there is no fluid. It is engaged via cable. Check the hole in the lever that the R pin goes into. It can get worn enough so it is difficult to engage. I had to repair mine.

    I have found this numerous. Slight corrosion in the connector. I usually put some dielectric grease in the connectors. I try to print out the service manuals offer each service call I go on. I'm getting a pretty good collection. Great video brother. I like your process, a lot like mine. Follow a logical process.

    • @im-that-guy-pal
      @im-that-guy-pal 2 роки тому

      Dielectric grease is non conductive. It can actually cause contact problems as easily as corrosion can.

    I just inherited this exact atv from my uncle. It hasn’t ran for years. It’s in good physical shape appearance wise and the gas tank has pin holes in it. I bought a new starter for it. I can’t wait til get it running, is there anything I should know to get started? Thx great video!

    Trick for removing Carb philips screws, tap the head with a hammer before removing. This will release it's grip and they unscrew easier without stripping out the philips screw slot. (Do not beat it to death) Also you can use a valve grinding compound on the screw driver tip to grip the inside of the slot better. (or other sandy type paste)

      I've also used a cold chisel and a hammer and just backed them out slowly.

    Just wanted to mention something, Honda has their normal atc line and the big red line they are different. Easy tell that you have a big red is if it has a key

    How do I check the transmission fuild? Does it have a transmission fuild different from oil? Having a hard time shifting it into reverse

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 роки тому

      Not necessarily, sometimes all I've had to do was a quick adjustment on the shift lever itself. Like if you go from forward into neutral in the middle it doesn't do anything, but you go slightly down into reverse and then back to neutral and it works. Sometimes they just need to be adjusted

    u may have energized it to by grounding it 2

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  6 років тому

      That's what I was thinking may have happened, as I couldn't get a ready off it, then after it worked.
      Either bad connection due to added resistance (corrosion) or that it was simply not energized because it had been sitting for so long!

    Parts are cheap just replace them and save the old ones.
