I'm not gonna lie, every time I see this scene still, after all these years, it makes my eyes well up. After 9 seasons, he finally tells her how he feels about her. He played that scene brilliantly!! It takes a special kind of actor to pull that off to make me all weepy, and Carroll was speaking from Archie's heart. Norman Lear was a genius 😊

After all these years ..... from teenager when I watched All in the family , to being 61 now , I still tear up , when I see this particular ( very well acted ! ) scene ! It was the last talk they had , as Edith passed away that night ..... Such a SAD episode but at the same time , ever so loving from both sides .
Thanks very much for uploading this part !

Carroll and Jean were two of the finest actors of their generation and TV was damn lucky to have them. They had acted with the best, both talented musically, dramatically and in comedy....unlike the reality trash of today, the TV of the 50's, 60's and 70's was golden, a real joy to watch.

My Dad always reminded me of Archie. He also found it difficult to put his feelings into words - but everyone knew how he felt about things, and them (well, if they were smart enough to read the signs). He only told me he loved me after I became an adult - and I was going though a really tough time in my life - but before that - he SHOWED me (which IMO means more than saying the words) on a daily basis.

To be a husband and know the depth of this moment is priceless. Edith played what a wife should be, encompassing grace, honor, strength, and sacrifice. When a man has a good woman of character like this, he can do anything he puts his mind to. For men with "good" wives validated by actions and not words, tell them how you feel about them as often as you get the opportunity because one day, that opportunity will not be there to take. God bless them both, and a brilliant piece of acting.

Archie is a character written with depth instead of just being and archetype. He's a reminder even underneath tough exteriors and difficulty personalities, there is more to them than the ranting.
Everyone one of these characters, Edith included, is imperfect. None of them is always right and none of them is always wrong. But all of them are loving as family and very different from one another. The world would be better off if we would be more like this instead.

3:30 the best side of Archie . Who knew he had it in him after all those years of treating sweet Edith like she was his maid. All wives need to hear those words of love and to reassure them that they matter. especially when they live with a grumpy offensive man for years on end who doesn't show outwardly affection towards their partner or loved ones. They can cry and get emotional over a tear jerker movie, Yet the person that is right by their side they ignore till their sick or dying. I don't get it. I know this was just a show but they really did put realistic topics on here for years. Serious stuff towards the end. The writers were good and the actors gave it their all every single time. Loved this show even though at times it gave me extreme anxiety.

Two things I want to say about this scene. First, I am surprised that Archie took Edith seriously when she cried to him from the steps. Maybe he could hear it in her voice that something really was wrong. Second, I want to say that I think that if we didn't see Edith suffer so much when she limped to the steps, the audience probably would have laughed when Archie sang from the kitchen acNemara's Band, because he sang it really funny. But we, the audience, were so concerned about poor Edith's pain. And last, I must say, Archie, you used and belittled Edith all your marriage to her. Now, you're confessing that you are nothing without her is too little too late!😢😢😢😢

I cried during this scene , as if I lost a dear friend as well ... That's a pure compliment , for awesome " acting " !..... so awesome , that it seemed REAL ! Classy actors , the entire cast . And as for Norman Lear , what a GREAT writer 👍👍👍👍👍💙🎁 A gift to the acting world and to television !!!
***** It's known , that Archie was using his OWN words for the larger part , totally unscripted . I think he felt like Edith was his REAL inscreen wife , a true " PIP " ..... 👍😢😢💜💜💜

Touching ending but IMO, Archie laid an ostrich egg in this one. First he treats Harry his partner like a rented mule then berates him for taking a 5 minute break. Then Edith clearly tells him she should stay off her feet, which he glibly ignores, then after all the cooking, Edith is practically passed out, and Archie says, "Now all ya gotta do is soive da food!" Jackass!

When this episode aired back in the 70’s we must have naively assumed that Edith would get better. The later show when Archie comes home from her funeral to their room, emptied of all her things except a pink slipper by the bed, was even more poignant and touching if that is even possible. Great writing and great acting.

As brilliant as Carroll O'Connor was as Archie, Jean Stapleton was a dozen times more so as Edith. There were lots of working class wives in Queens after World War II who ruled their roosts with an iron fist while letting their husbands wear the crowns, but she captured it perfectly as Edith Bunker. They were a team, entertained each other by being themselves, and never wanted for anything.

It took me several attemps trying to watch "Too Good Edith" in full knowing what was going to happen. Sorry, but I just wanted to slap Archie. Couldn't he for once pay attention to his wife and listen to her, stop bossing her around? My grandmother had three daughters (my mom was the youngest). The eldest was her favorite. Many years ago, when I was a kid, my grandmother was sick just like Edith and had to stay in bed. My mother and my aunt (middle child) took care of her, so I hardly see my mother for a year. One day, the favorite daughter came to visit, my aunt was at work and my mom took a minute to go to the supermarket and asked "the favorite" to take care of my grandmother. When she came back, she found my grandmother sitting down literally dying because the favorite had made my grandmother make her favorite (a very elaborated) dish. Needless to say from that day on my grandmother spent her last weeks at the hospital. My family and my aunt paid for her funeral. The other one just left and, later, came back to sign some papers and collect her reward for being such a good daughter, because my grandmother left her house to her.

He may have been an ignorant ass, but he loved his wife and kids. Even Mike... very much, just wasn't his way to be able to show it till something like this... he was a tough ol dog and it was touching to see one of the first times you get to see his heart. He'd die for his family without a thought, and they all knew he'd be there for them.
I always wished they'd show after the funeral at the house, With The Jeffersons and Findlays and Lorenzos and everybody together one more time.. think even Maude and George would have been extra kind to Archie.

Even though they went on to do Archie Bunker's Place, I think it should have ended right here, if not the season before.

The only reason they kept it going was because the ratings were still good.

I grew up on shows like this and The Flintstones and The Honeymooners, and that was probably part of the reason I never married. These men were just unbearable and I never wanted to be stuck with one of them. Give me the professor on Gilligan's Island any day.

From jeane stappleton who played Edith she said in the show that her character died while visiting her daughter in California. Do I have that right?

I think so. In the first episode of second season of Archie Bunker's Place Edith was just died.

She died in her sleep at home. Archie talks in that episode about trying to wake her up one morning and he realized she was gone.

This is the real ending, no need to watch anything after this

I know. They only kept the show going because the ratings were so good. Jean had had enough.

Poor Edith is even doing “good” wrong. 😂
I guess Archie laid the pipe right, why else would she put up with his sh-t?
