- In this game of Age of Empires 3, we see the Swedish go up against the Japanese. Typically, Landsknechts are considered one of the worst mercenary units, however, their recent buff seems to have changed this!

Hmm i probably like it more than caroleans but landsknechts are pretty OP right now, hope they nerf them it´s just ridiculous and dumb that they are germans but sweden ones are better than actually germans xd

@@Lucky-dt5gs hmmm it doesn't trade terribly, but even if you outnumber them 2v1 (wich you are spending 250 coin and them 240) they win but from 40 of them they remain like 4 with low health, and it's not like you can do much with them, if landsknechts survive they can still kill everything else, but if spies survive they can't kill anything else so it's a waste. Now, don't get me wrong it's still a counter that can save you, but for the cons that the spies have and exactly for that reason (that they are soooo niche) they should trade waaayyy better than almost lose xd

ALTHOUGH he lost like 15+ units in that fishing boat he ONLY gave the enemy 2 fishing boats kill bounty exp! ! Big brain? It was lose them all and give 2 billion kill xp or risk losing in the boat and lost only 1 boat's worth of xp!
I've been playing for five days, mostly with Inca and French, and very rarely win. Since watching this video I just rush to spam Landsknecht early game and haven't lost a game. I went from 698 elo to 910 in a matter of hours. I've beaten Sweden, Portugal, China, Spain, UK, and Ottomans. Nobody even says gg because it's so ridiculous.

Yo Drongo, no need to hide your pronunciation of "Landsknecht". It was already quite decent.
The sound of the "Lands" is like English "sun". Go from Sun --> Lun and add the rest: "Lundsknecht".
Plural would just add an e at the end: Lundsknechte.

I'm playing with Full Army Landshnechts + Jaeger since like 2 month when i started playing this game. I'm lvl 110 with Sweden and I never created a single carolean lol Landshnech + Jaeger combo is OP. Full upgrade they have respectivly 970 hp and almost 500 hp

If the devs have the guts to listen the community, Sweden would've been the most fun civ.
But since Caroleans are busted af and torps a cheap mechanics, no players feel compelled in using mercs.

It's not fine. It's not "not meta". It's literally a bad design:
- Sweden is supposed to complement their armies with mercs. Never ever happened. And the devs are not addressing it.
- Sweden doesn't have a light cavalry. Dragoon's substitute is a Hakkepeli: a shitty Uhlan with a useless ranged attack. What for? Nothing. They have hussar. Why do they need another HC while having no LC?
- Caroleans... a single unit replacing all other units Sweden lacks (skirmish, dragoons) while being an uneven musk with exclusive bonus and broken cards.
- Torps: not even gonna talk about it

So we have a civ which is supposed to fill their army with mercs because devs removed key units but they won't have mercs because devs made a single unit having the power of all the missing ones AND being a broken unit in their own category.

Drongo do you think that samurai would have traded well with Landsknechts? Or perhaps Japan should have aged, save export and go for ninja?
Ashi would have done fine. Reds micro was god awful. Idk if it's DE pathing or what. But it was horrendous. He lost so many units by not paying attention. He boarded his fishing bots but paused for 2 seconds allowing the land scents to seige. When he one the fight at his home base. He got green and kept pushing out. He should have just aged up. I feel like this game was low Elo legends..
In late game samurai could´ve probably beat landsknecht by a tiny bit so it wouldn´t be that close, but in the early landsknechts have so much advantage, samurai have *half* the hp of the landsknecht and the *same* attack if it does FULL are damage wich is not likely specially in early engagements not to mention their extra attack of lands on their ability wich is even more relevant in early and they cost almost the same, so its just dumb that landsknechts are too OP and samurai not even used imo...

I'd say it's fairly close. Can't expect a perfect pronunciation from someone who hasn't learned the language. It's hard to get the G right for a language you're not a native speaker of, and even then the specific pronunciation of your G generally reveals what region you're from in both Germany and The Netherlands.

Aussie: It's important to note that that Age1 card & Silversmith, which increase the yield for mines, ONLY affects villager gathering, not Torps.
That fishing boat takedown was BRUTAL! Never thought losing 1 fish boat would be that distressing...

I totally agree, i´ve been saying it too! They are one of the very best (if not the best) late game melee infantry in the game but it´s supposed to be actually an early choice, wich it is; they are OP in late game (treaty), but in supremacy they are just ridiculous
Please don't call them landsharks. That is really painfull to hear. I even prefer you butchering the name (you're actually not that bad anymore, pronouncing their name) to calling them landsharks. I would suggest either making the effort to learn how to pronounce them (it's not that hard, you also did it with the haudenosaunee), maybe by asking someone who knows hiw it is pronounced properly, or call them merc-doppels or something like that.
Nevertheless, you make good videos and I enjoy watching them, keep up the good word!
So please don't view this comment as negative, but as a friendly constructive criticism.

They are not good. They are OP. As inca, i had to spend a disproportionate amount of army to beat them. Not even maceman can stop them. You have to stop them with plumed spearmen and shot with jungle bowmen from behind, but more resources are lost in the struggle for inca than for them.
Exactlyyyyy it´s what i have been saying for long!! I know cause my fav unit is samurai cause they can kill ANYTHING at close range, only exceptions are JPK in some cases and urumi but that is countered with cav, but kills dutch halberdiers, espadachines, doppels, all cav, even RI and cannons in close range, only urumi but die to cav anyway and JPK can die to them too if used properly, but they don´t even beat Landsknechts in early game, they can beat them but with DOUBLE the resources and it´s a very close fight, as you said not even maceman kill them wich is just dumb cause they aren´t so specialized in cav as the lands, and well, not even samurai even if they too aren´t as specialized as the lands 🙄 they should be nerfed

For our english friends: Try „Landsknasht“ - should sound like the german „Landsknecht“. For the „a“ in „Lands“, try to say it like the „a“ in „garden“. 😇

These kinds of strats usually work on the fact, players are used to a civ doing certain meta stats, but throw them something they never seen before that hurts, and the time spent fumbling for what works against, is time lost trying play optimally as panic sets in. The only possible counter I could see was Yams as nagas obviously are melee and get destroyed by the shark cav bonuses, but of course, age 2 battle, no Yams, no chance. No wonder fast FF is popular.
I wouldn´t say yams would say the day, of course they can kite, but deal half the damage of the ashi and cost the double of the ashi, so by the time you kite 5 landsknecht your whole town would be destroyed, and if they don´t chase you its the same cause you only deal the same damage as ashis but with double the cost, and your buildings die faster so it would be gg anyways... Landsknechts are just OP, that´s the problem, they should nerf them
I think he made a really big mistake after a really good move: He changed to Japanese Isolation when he saw the pressure, that's good. But he wasted export making Shinobies when he should have made Ninjas (Ninjutsu-Zukai) which have 400 HP, 30% melee resistance, 20 base attack x10 against mercenaries...Other option would have been going Dutch allies > Church wagon and spam Spies, which is more sustainable as he had a good coin income.

Would Samurai have traded well?
For their cost, samurais are quite a bit worse, they have less health and damage for more relative cost.

I think Ashigaru is the best counter Japan can offer against this tactic but it needs atleast 40-50 ashigarus to work. 50 ashigarus would beat 25 of them because of pathfinding issues of melee units in AOE3. 20-25 ashigarus can't beat 12 lands.
I put the answer in other comment, although J Foley is not bad xd they trade not so good in the early cause landsknecht cost just 20% (240>200) more being more heavy on gold but have almost DOUBLE the hp of the samurai (430>>230) with the same melee resist, and basically the "same" attack but samurai needs their area of effect and in early engagements is easy to even avoid it completely, so they have the same attack at worst but can be even double the attack if put their units separately (54>28-56) so landsknecht for their stats should cost almost the double of the samurai but costs almost the same, and that is because is merc so it´s supposed to not be able to be upgraded as other units (2 times as much) but sweden can do it (2.15 times hp & 1.9 atk) so it´s supper broken in early while still being OP in the late... not even in late game, treaty for example, the samurai can beat landsknecht, in my opinion they CAN beat them, but is sosososo close that sometimes landsknecht can win too :/ they should nerf landsknecht and buff samurai :)))

What, sweden deck without infinite mamelukes? What is this, a balanced game of aoe3?
Has the japanese player ever heard of yumi archers? Why mass ashigaru when your oponent is spamming melle infantry? Sure the *land sharks* were faster but yumi had way higher damage than ashi, not to mention if he made a warship he could easily retreat those yumi onto the ship and slowly kill sweden's army
Yumi would have it worse, they deal 28.5 damage to HI (19x1.5) while ashigaru deal 24, so it´s less than 20% more attack but ashis have 70% more hp plus melee resist, wich ends up at +112.5% hp for ashi or +18.75% attack for yumi wich is not worth it, and plus ashis are faster, the only think is ashis cost a little bit more, but just like 10-15% more so it´s really not worth it, maybe just a few yumi with ashi protection but no way full yumi xd
He should of just moved his economy and base, make ashigaru attack his trade post man I thought that jap player was smart but he can't even avoid one slow mass
Sweden with all the merc upgrade and spamming 30 ronin is scarier, it kills everything it touches and they have like 1100 HP,0.4 resist and 120 attack. and 210 siege damage.... i killed 40 hassar and 50 musk and still win the 1v2 lol
