This is really unbelievable to me because I was born "tongue tied" at birth and my speech, when children start talking, was more formanable than those who are not tongue tied ... like my 3 siblings.
Tongue ties are really tricky. When we evaluate them, we look at any functional impact it has on the child. Some kids have tongue ties and they are able to feed and speak without difficulty. Some are seriously impacted and for those having a release can be very necessary. My daughter had a severe tongue tie that prevented her from breastfeeding and even forming a proper seal to drink a bottle. I on the other hand have a tongue and lip tie and have had no impact to my speech. I do wonder if my sleep apnea might be due in part to it though. In adults, tongue tie can cause chronic neck and shoulder pain, TMJ, orthodontic issued and can cause a high valued narrow palate. This basically means not really enough space for your tongue to be at rest against the roof of your mouth, which then leads to sleep issues like sleep apnea.
I believed I had low/no milk supply and my daughter had horrible acid reflux. She's 1 now and we recently went to the dentist for the first time. Turns out she has a lip and a tongue tie. The pediatrician said she wouldn't do anything about it if it were her kid, but I'm more inclined to listen to the dentist since it's a dental issue
definitely get it sorted out. the tongue guides the development of most of the face. if she can't use her tongue properly, her face will grow downwards and she will likely develop breathing, posture and sleep disorders
Find a better dentist. We had our new born in for this b/c he wasn’t feeding and loosing weight/not gaining enough weight. And we just realized our daughter might have it.
fix it for your child, idk why the paediatrician wouldnt do anything about it. i have a speech impediment and i cant properly talk to people, its not just embarrassing but it also makes certain people want to make fun of you. it is not funny being told to say silly sausages for the 50th time in class
@@stjeepI have mumbled most of my life and it’s hard to say if I had it before or after braces but if it wasn’t for lack of money , I would go see a doctor to see if I could benefit from a tongue tie release . The surgery itself is not outrageously expensive but it’s the myofunctional therapy that’s required before and after that makes the total cost prohibitive for me .
My son was born with a tongue tie & around 6 mos. is when I thought it should be cut and his pediatrician said we don’t cut tongue ties in babies anymore unless it gives us Speech problems down the road. So, about four years old, I mentioned that he was having a lisp and again I was told that the tongue is not bad and not the reason. Then 10 years old, the orthodontist (dentist never said anything) the orthodontist says this needs to be cut. It’s affecting his teeth. It’s affecting his breathing and probably his speech. Ugh! They couldn’t just cut it when he was born !? Or at 6 mos? wtf 🤬 Now, it’s still not cut because he needs 6 teeth removed first to make room in his undersized jaw. 1 more 🦷 to go 🥵Gah.
I’m almost 40 and just had my tongue tie released. I didn’t have speech problems growing up so we never thought anything of it. Over the years I developed forward head posture, chronic head and neck pain. I saw a PT specializing in myofascial therapy and she referred me to a tongue tie release doctor. She released my tongue tie and upper lip tie. It’s been 4 weeks and my 15-year headache is gone. My dr recommended doing it sooner than later in life so that the jaw can develop properly. I’m bringing my son in for an evaluation I don’t want him to experience the 15-year chronic pain I had from something that is so easily fixed.
so he hadn't been to a dentist all his life? or not one single dentist ever noticed? Ok not one single doctor noticed I had a hidden squint so as a child they never made me wear this eye patch and now my 3D vision is not the best 😰
No, our daughter has been to the dentist, and he didn’t daily anything either. It wasn’t until we saw a specialist for our new born not feeding right. That we decided to schedule an appointment with the new doctor, and hopefully help our older child with the speech impediment.
Being tongue-tied is a manifestation of MTHFR mutation, which has many implications for one’s health. Just do some research and look up the video called “physical manifestations of MTHFR mutation”.

the frenulum under the tongue was too short or too tight, so they had to cut it
