Keith was definitely struggling on that album, but still the best possible drummer for the album. Keith also is well known as rock and roll's biggest and craziest party animal, which I guess is what ended up taking such a toll on him. Probably slightly autistic, and definitely big ADHD, he had a completely unique kind of brilliance, both on the drums, and in his sense of humour.
I bought “Meaty Beaty big and Bouncy” (possibly the best compilation album ever) in 1973 when I was 13. I first saw The Who at Wembley in 1975. Thus beginning a life long relationship and love affair with The Who. Your enthusiasm for them makes me happy. Thumbs up to Who Wednesdays 👍 No band has ever had four lead musicians like The Who!
My all time favourite music promo clip. FYI, the original studio version of "Who Are You" is considerably longer with an extra verse. Great reaction man. It's so wonderful to see someone such as yourself getting into this incredible band. Make sure you don't skip their '60's catalogue. They literally reshaped the genre and influenced every form of hard rock that came after them. Their 1965 debut album My Generation is another to check out. And a couple more live clips to consider, "My Generation" from Monterey 1967, "A Quick One While He's Away" from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus 1968, and "See Me, Feel Me" from Woodstock 1969. I would do Tommy before Quadrophenia only because it was released before it.
L33, please listen to more classic Who. A lot of great early singles, (do a few together?), "I Can See For Miles" is amazing. Also, their Live performances "My Generation" at Monterey Pop, and "A Quick One" at "Rolling Stones R&R Circus". Important to hear "Tommy", among the most important albums EVER! Ground breaking concept-album/prog-psychedelic. Try "Overture" into "It's A Boy", or "Acid Queen" into "Underture". And please hear "Tommy" before watching the Movie ( great film, uneven music). Try "Who's Next", every song is GREAT. And then the concept album "Quadrophinia", try first and last song "The Real Me" and "Love Reign O'er Me".
Isle of Wight is one of the greatest shows, yet apparently the Who only went on-stage at 2:00 AM! Somehow they played 30+ songs, and every number was at max-energy and power. "Young Man Blues" is often mentioned as the best performance that night, but every song is intense. Some other great moments are "Water" and "Don't Even Know Myself", and the whole section from "Tommy". This show followed their earlier "Live At Leeds", and documents the Who at the height of their power, right before they recorded the "Lifehouse Project" that became "Who's Next".@@steveowens2505
In high school in the late 60's , a girl I knew made me take her to the Dallas Market Hall to see Herman' s Hermits. The band that opened for them was... The Who. They played My Generation, Substitute, Happy Jack, and more. Then they started destroying their instruments on stage. This was conservative Dallas fer F's sake! I barely remember Herman's Hermits, but my musical life was forever changed after that performance by The Who.
Good luck Lee with the turntable. Be advised that you do need a Pre-Amp to plug into, either on a receiver, or a separate Pre-Amp piece. I used to work in an AV store, so I can't help myself with the useless advice. The saddest thing about The WHO album "Who Are You" is the cover photo, with Keith sitting on a chair that says "Not To Be Taken Away". And he was gone soon after, so ironic. And it is a great album. Love this video, and seeing the band in the studio.
Fuck that is heartbreaking, man. What a loss. He was certainly one of a kind. Thank you for the info, if I have any issues I'm coming back to this comment for help LOL
Keith Moon was one of my drumming inspirations growing up. He was so high energy, unpredictable, and yet tasteful all in one. Fun reaction and solid review. Who are we?
Wow!! The video was incredible!!! Many thanks to the person who sent it to you. I love watching iconic bands behind the scenes, in the studio. Keith was such a beast. No wonder the Muppets made a character out of him called Animal. Great, great video!! This made my day!
I saw the Who with Keith 3 times, and with my kids 4 times. Way back in the 70s, I lost my date at the show, and went home alone. Those were wild days even for a nerd like me. Always great.
The Live at Leeds album is EPIC. Looking forward to your reactions. My Generation is incredible. Young Man Blues though mostly improvised is amazing. Amazing Journey/Sparks is one of Moons more amazing performances. Magic Bus has Daltry playing a mean harmonica. Raw and Powerful!!!
I'm always fascinated by how bands get together, The Who started as The Detours in 1962 by Roger Daltry, John Entwistle and Pete Townsend they all went to the same school and one day Roger saw John carrying a bass guitar, started a conversation and they decided to form a band John knew Pete and suggested he join as lead guitar, Roger was not a vocalist at this time and played rhythm. Roger switched to vocals, Pete became the sole guitarist, with Keith joining the band in 1964 their first hit was Can't Explain in 1965. It is an amazing coincidence that such world class musicians lived so close to each other and fate had them meet and form a band, like Lennon and McCartney being school friends and both having multi instrumentalist skills and crazy song writing abilities, and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were school friends but never knew about each others music taste until they left school and met at a train station Keith noticed Mick was carrying records by Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters, started a conversation and they kept in touch and eventually formed a band. Things could have been so much different if all these chance encounters never happened.
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are two other classic rockers who went to the same middle school together near Toronto and have been friends and band mates ever since.
@bostonwhofan exactly what are the chances of that, I love this sort of thing, same with Ozzy and Tony from Black Sabbath. Where as bands like Led Zeppelin were formed by people who had worked together as session musicians and eventually in bands together leaving to form their own band relying far less on chance and coincidence, totally fascinates me, especially in this day and age of manufactured bands that are either put together by management companies or through TV shows, it's just not the same somehow.
This is one of my personal favorites as well. Their quality as musical creators was/were amazing. Their energy, too! Mr. Moon was the inspiration for Animal who was the drummer on The Muppets. Perfect! Thank you for sharing this one. Keep enjoying!
Picture of "who are you" : Moonie on the chair with this inscription "NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY" He was the soul of this band even "Ego Pity" admitted this, so... 🔴 Daltrey has made a tribute song for Keith " On a ragging moon" and Entwistle has recorded ithis song too in his solo album... Cool from them.... Not like angry Pity who 💩 on the Moonie's memory...
Now I've watched the vid, you have nailed the make up of the band. They were everywhere back in the day. Keep reacting to the old boys, you wont regret it :D
This video by the Who is best to show that rascal Moon cutting up. I love watching him pound the drums. I heard years ago the drummer character Animal from the Muppet Show was based on Kieth Moon. And watching John belt out the most savage bass runs while looking so nonchalant!❤
@L33Reacts if you ever do a film reaction, please consider doing "The Kids are Alright". IMHO, it is the greatest rock documentary ever produced. It's where this footage came from.
@@dellafenton2417 Back then, The Who were not yet popular in the US. We paid $3.50 per ticket, total $7 for the two of us.. " I'd call that a bargain, the best I ever had."
Lee: They REALLY exemplify what is meant by the chemistry of a band. A one of a kind, lightning in a bottle combination of people that can't be copied. Great reaction to the awesome vid.
I agree with those saying you need to listen to Quadrophenia. If you want to pull out a song or two I would suggest “The Real Me” or “5:15”. Hearing the overture to Tommy is what started my obsession with The Who about 50 years ago. Just be aware it’s a bit more experimental than Quadrophenia. Both are amazing, ground-breaking albums.
I saw them live twice in the early 70s. A Who concert was a major event. It would sell out very fast. My ears would be ringing for a couple of days after a Who concert. They were something else. One of the handful of truly legendary bands who ruled rock n roll from the mid-60s to the late 70s.
I was not so much into Who when I was a kid in the 60,s ,its first the last two years i have lernt to like thier music. I was into The Animals original line up, Beatles, Hollies, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Spencer Davis group.
Nice one👍😁 I saw The Who in Amsterdam in 1972 for the first time. Something you'll never forget 😅 The sound was perfect, verry verry loud but brilliant. Golden Earring was the support act, and they were crazy good too. Best concert i've ever seen. Thanks for this one. Cheers from the Netherlands. 👍😁👊
If you get a turntable, you should also get a good amp & speakers. Headphones don't cut it. If you're listening to The Who, or Led Zeppelin, your neighbors should be as well!
Did you know that Keith Moon actually used to put explosives in his drum kit until he put too much in on a tv show, and practically blew the set apart😄 He was also famous for driving his car into his swimming pool . God love him ❤️
I knew I had heard the chorus before somewhere. I watched CSI with my grandpa while he was still with us a long time ago... damn time flies. I'm not 12 anymore.
Many years ago, I was at a garage sale and found a bunch of vinyl albums being sold at insanely cheap prices. I came out of that sale with a bunch of albums, some of them rare, and one of them was an original US pressing of Live At Leeds with all the inserts included (Woodstock contract, rejection letter from EMI, etc.). That "rich man's copy" cost me all of $2.50 Canadian. I was unbelievably lucky to find that, because I'd seen original copies in used record stores that were priced out of this world. So you have my sympathies for the "poor man's copy" that you had to settle for.
Such a great clip . Geez I miss these bands from that time era . Thx L33 for appreciating this generation of music and keeping it alive for us oldies but still young at heart 👍
Quadrophenia over Tommy to play first. Both great, but I love the story of the Mods and Rockers in Quadrophenia better. Plus, the Who were at their absolute peak coming on the heels of my favorite album, Who's Next.
This was filmed for the movie The Kids Are Alright. Perhaps it was later considered a promo video. If memory serves, this was shot by director Jeff Stein in 35 mm as was the May 1978 Shepperton gig. In the director’s commentary of this movie on this clip, there was a small break on the video showing Pete, like a missing frame from editing. I’d have to watch the movie to find where. Stein, though, said he was furious.
The WHO... Who Are You... This is the theme song for...CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, also referred to as CSI and CSI: Las Vegas, is a forensics crime drama television series that ran on CBS from October 6, 2000, to September 27, 2015, There are 3 spin offs all using Songs from the WHO. (CSI Miami used...Won't get fooled Again)... (CSI New York used ...Baba O'Riley)... (CSI Cyber used... I Can See For Miles). .....They recently brought back the original CSI hence adding Las Vegas to the title. The Who did the halftime show for Superbowl 44 in Feb of 2010.
That was awesome! Best clip you could have done. Can’t wait to hear what you think of Live at Leeds. If you intend to do both, I would start with Tommy. Then when you hit Quad, you’ll appreciate how far they improved.
This is a very enjoyable recording for the Movie "The Kids Are All RIght", a studio outtake during "Who Are You". Watch the equally great "The Kids' footage Live at Shepperton Studios 1978. Amazing "Won't Get Fooled Again" and a very good "Baba O'Riley". In the studio, the band is in unusually good spirits for the cameras. Keep in mind that Moon was near death, "Who Are You" was his last great studio drumming. By 1978, Moon's physical decline was rather shocking, comparing footage from his prime, like "Monterey Pop", "Rolling Stones R&R Circus", or " Isle of Wight". But I'm glad Moon had this final Hurrah!
If you haven't already, you should definitely check out The Who documentary movie, The Kids Are Alright (1979). Possibly the best "rockumentary" film of the '70s.
By the way,the Live at Leeds album is only 40minutes so get the Deluxe edition where the whole concert is on it. One of THE best ever live albums and it’s really heavy too, pristine quality.
@L33Reacts I always enjoy The Who. Something you may want to check out. A song originally released by Roger Daltrey called Under A Raging Moon but look for the live version by Entwistle. It's a celebration of Keith Moon.
On the studio version of 'Under a Raging Moon', towards the end there is a tribute to Keith where the following drummers all played a short drum solo: Martin Chambers (Pretenders), Roger Taylor (Queen), Cozy Powell (Rainbow, Black Sabbath), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), and Mark Brzezicki (Big Country).
So I checked, and it seems as if you haven't gotten to "The Real Me". This is a MUST. I could just loop the isolated drum and bass track and die happy. Keith playing lead drums and John playing lead bass is as good as it gets.
Love the song/video, and of course your reaction! Got to see The Who live a few times - one was on their 25th Anniversary Tour (yikes - way more than 25 years ago!) on their Boston stop - (the "Double Rainbow" show - if you know, you know), and another time when they performed Quadrophenia from start to finish! Simply spectacular. Glad to see you're enjoying them as much as I do.
Keith Moon. What a...personality. If you haven't already, check out The Who live version of "My Generation" from the Smothers Brothers Show. Keith was E X P L O S I V E ! ! ! 💣
Yes, it ends with Pete Townshend's hair smoldering and Keith laying on the floor in front of the drumkit after having shrapnel from one of his cymbals embedded in his leg after the explosion!
This is an amazing video... I love Keith Moon just being a chaotic goofball, but unfortunately, this video was shot mere weeks before his death... Moon died 1 month after Who Are You was released... very sad
"I know there's a place you walked, where love falls from the trees. My heart is like a broken cup, I only feel right on my knees. I spit out like a sewer hole, yet still receive your kiss. How can I measure up to anyone now, after such a love as this?".
I remember when they first hit our shores being able to bye their uk lPs and they had commercials from uk between songs. Still have recordings. Thanks for reaction
Check out Who live at the Isle of Wight. Pete in a white jumpsuit plays like he’s on fire! I think it’s their best live concert! Better than live at Leeds in my opinion! They play all their hits plus Tommy songs! They were great live because Keith would just look at Pete and try to match his intensity. Some people say The Who were the greatest live rock band! They were exciting live. No doubt about it. One of the greatest groups!
John gets my vote for best bassist ever. Pete is one of the greatest songwriters and a musical genius. You need to check out his solo stuff, which I personally like even better than The Who. Quadrophenia is their best album.
"a quick one (while he is away)" is kind of the first rock opera, although a mini one, by pete and the who, check it out L33. love ain't for keeping, getting in tune and the song is over are three greatly underrated songs from who's next.
Only bass players who started out in the early 60's could get away with John's thumb style. It's such a throwback. 😄 But yeah, this studio footage was put together for 'The Kids Are Alright' film. They just happened to be working on this song at the same time as the film was being made, plus they knew it would be their next single. The live footage of them playing "Won't Get Fooled Again" was shot at the same time (plus a bunch of interviews.) Anyways, Go See 'The Kids Are Alright'! 😁 BTW, I'd recommend 'Tommy' before 'Quadrophenia'. They're both double concept/storyline albums, but it's always useful to hear the band's progression from the earlier form to a more mature version with better recording capabilities.
Reminds me of the famous ads for a HiFi system : "just like having Keith Moon in your room - only safer" 😅

That sb show was when Roger was still recovering from throat surgery
That was excellent! Superb! Thanks, great reaction! 😊
I’m so glad you did this version! The energy and intensity. ❤
One of my favorite tunes.
Played his drums like a lead guitar!!
John Entwhistle was a beast on the bass, but was so statue like while he played.
The 16 minute version of "My Generation" on Live at Leeds is one of the greatest live performances from any band you'll ever hear.
I requested this way before there was a Who Wednesday. 😁. Now you see why. It’s awesome! ☮️❤️✌️🫶
The WHO❗️❗️❗️Mic drop.🎤🎤🎤👍😎
Sheer talent!
This isn't the album version, but from the 'The Kids Are Alright" documentary, Hugh recommend flick.
12:12pm Great video!!! Those guys were comical. Seeing Keith in his element was epic.
I love this kid he's my new favorite reactor on UA-cam. Sorry to call your kid but I'm 58 you're all kids to me..😆
Well, I'm 65, so you're a kid to me!
I heard once that Keith Moon was the inspiration for the Muppet Animal.
This is an amazing video... I love Keith Moon just being a chaotic goofball, but unfortunately, this video was shot mere weeks before his death... Moon died 1 month after Who Are You was released... very sad
Actually it IS a very philosophical song. Dig into those lyrics!
You should check out The Who tribute to New York City. They were much older but just as good. (Ringo's son was on the drums)
Isle of wight is one of their best concerts
I had the 8 track of Live at Leeds
Terrific Take & Reaction Lee... Really enjoying your Channel... Always look forward to "THE WHO Wednesdays" 😊
"a quick one (while he is away)" is kind of the first rock opera, although a mini one, by pete and the who, check it out L33. love ain't for keeping, getting in tune and the song is over are three greatly underrated songs from who's next.
I did the live from leeds version of it! Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/VNJEqKg3m5A/v-deo.html
