I got to see The Who with Zak around this time, and he did great!
I won tickets to a Father's Day cruise around SF Bay during a Giant's game. For part of the cruise, there was a trivia contest. People got paired up with one of the DJs. I requested a woman DJ I knew who was very knowledgable about baseball trivia and the Giants specifically, as was I. The competition was stiff, though! The question we won, the prize was dinner for two somewhere. A little kid later won tickets to see The Who. I was so jealous.
Later on, he and his dad were sitting with us to eat, and the kid said he wished he'd won the dinner to give to his parents for their anniversary. I was like: 'Aw, what rotten luck! But, I will be willing to give mine up to you if you want to trade.' Hehe. He did and we did, so I went to the show lol! It was outside at Great America in Mountain View, CA theme park. It was not too long after Jon died, as it was around 4th of July that year. :(
Yeah apparently he passed not too long after this show. So sad.
Very sad.😢 I was going to see The Who at 19 yo and so stoked! While waiting for my show date, the news came that Jon had died. I only got to see two original members.
There's a video of a live performance of The Who with Keith and Pete being peak Keith and Pete, and Roger getting in on it. Can't even remember the song. Making a case? He literally changed the way the instrument is played. Phenomenal player. He pretty much did for the electric bass what Hendrix did for the guitar.
The best in that band
When they came back properly in 1999 we had a three year period with John still alive and Zak adding so much fire to them that ypu could almost close your eyes and imagine them at their best. Those of us who saw them in 2000 were privileged. They were astounding.
Strumming the neck of that bass guitar like it’s no big deal. Phenomenal bass solo 🔥

It's funny how dramatic the aging process is between your 60's and 80; Roger here is still thin and agile in 2002; Zak Starkey hss been The Who's drummer for more than 25 years now - he's fantastic John died in Las Vegas, several days before the 2002 was set to begin.
Entwhistle was a genius. He died in Vegas from too much blow in a penthouse full of women of various professions. Sad, but an envious way to go. Screwed the upcoming tour.
But if you have to go, hookers and coke is a hell of a way to do it.
Nicknamed thunder fingers, greatest bassist of all time, he literally changed the way bassist played. And yes he died in Vegas unfortunately while on tour with them. They performed 9/11 concert and literally blew everyone else off the stage. Uncle keith taught zak to play drums that's why he sounds like keith. This is greatest band, live band ever hands down.

This show was actually from late in 2000. The date they show at the beginning can't be correct as John had sadly died by then.

Lee........I have to correct one thing. This performance is from 2000, not 2002. It's from a DVD and I have it. John died 2 years later in Vegas right before they went on tour.

Rick, you state correctly that when you were watching the "Get Back" documentary you thought to yourself that John Lennon only had 11 years of life left but had no way of knowing that. Ironically, Yoko is/was heavily into tarot cards, numerology, astrology, and various other occult practices. She even consulted the stars to make business decisions and even simple decisions like booking studio time. All that yet she couldn't see her husband's assassination coming ?? Hmmm.

Keith taught Zach to play the drums, you can definitely see the influence.
Keith was Zak’s Godfather.
Keith gave Zac his first drum set but never actually taught him. Years later Kenny gave Zac one of Keith’s drum sets.

About a year later, my wife and i had the privilege to see John Entwistle, shortly before he passed, in a star studded cast doing a tribute to the Beatles called a Walk down Abbey Road. It was the best of all worlds as it also featured vocals of Alan Parson, Todd Rungren, and Anne Wilson of Heart fame. They played tracks from all their bands plus Beatles hits, which they pulled off amazingly. It's one of my fondest concert memories, having never shucked out monster money to see McCartney
This was in 2000 the first teenage cancer trust concert @ Royal Albert Hall in London .. He passed in June of 2002.. His last American concert was for The concert for NY in October of 2001 @ MSG
Entwistle was famous for saying the he didn’t play “bass” he played “bass guitar”. I think we all see what he means.
Actually, he said he played, "lead bass".
79 years old now but seems like yesterday I'm at the Shepherds Bush social club London watching them. Been my life's inspiration, Quadrophenia my bible, Pete my mentor, his music my path through life's ups and downs. So thankful to have witnessed the golden age.

John Entwistle passed away June 27, 2002 (age 57 years). I loved Keith on drums, Pete on guitar. Roger contributed a good harmonica now and then, but the greatest musician in this group was John IMO.
That said, Pete Townsend was the greatest songwriter in the hard rock genre IMO. His catalog of music and lyrics amazes me.
I saw the Who in the 70s when they were promoting Quadrophenia and again in 89 but this performance blew me away. Especially John holy shit!.
I saw Entwistle a few times with The Who. The 1st time without him was on the 2013 Quadrophenia tour. When the Who did 5:15, they played John's bass solo from this video. It was up on the big screen. So, It was like he was there, even though he was only there in spirit.

They played this at a volume so loud that I felt that bass solo more than heard it.
Regardless of what live version this is (hopefully with the bass solo from The Ox), you need to check our the original studio version from Quadrophenia.

Concert was actually from 2000.
When I was living in Atlanta in the 90's, a friend of mine who loved the Who, told me the Who were on tour doing Quadrophenia from start to finish and asked if I wanted to go. I told him after Keith died I really didn't want to see them. He told me Zach was playing on this tour. I read up learning about Keith teaching Zach. I'm so glad I went.

Kenny Jones was a good drummer but Zack is a better Who drummer.
Roger started out as the lead guitarist for the band.
I finally got to see the Who about five years ago. Still killing it, although Roger’s voice has gotten worse. But he’s pushing 80 years old.
I don't watch any Who videos without Moon, but thanks for sharing so could see the Oxes solo.
What an amazing solo! A bass player like no other. Zak is great too. We saw them at Hyde Park a few years back and he was perfect for them. Not trying to be Keith, but exciting in his own style. The recorded version is tighter and punchier, very different. The lyrics are brilliant too, and like all their records, John played brass as well as bass! Two best live performances - Young Man Blues at the Isle of Wight and Tea and Theatre (just Pete and Roger with the most emotional song of their career.

He passed away in a few months later in Las Vegas @ The Hard Rock Hotel lol with a Hooker in his bed!!! What a way to go!!!!! I had tickets to see them on of all days July 4th in Sacramento their 2nd show since he passed it was very emotional !!!! Lucky they got Pino Paladino to fill in as he was available….
I saw them the night before at Great America in Mountain View! Finally got to see The Who and no Jon. :( But yeah, great show anyway!

The Who was formed in 1964. This concert was in 2003. You do the math. I saw them perform in 2022. AMAZING!

John is my favorite bassist, there has never been a better one. I wonder if he ever tried lead guitar. He could have been superb there as well.

Did I say it was grainy? If i did It's just the compression from downloading a UA-cam video that was only in 480p. I'm sure they were bootlegs back then you couldn't even see the band at all 😂

L33, Thanks so much for doing this request for me. I saw The Who in 2013 performance of Quadrophenia in its entirety. Although both Keith and John were deceased, they played tribute to them with video and sound recordings mixed into the show. This bass solo was played on the big screen during this song. Then Footage of Keith singing Bell Boy while both Roger and Zak (Keith’s Godson by the way) looked up at the screen. Very moving.
Probably from the 27 November 2000 or 8 February 2002 show, I guess.

They were so good live, nobody compared when they had Keith!Though they were good here Roger’s voice was already going by then.I saw Roger doing some WHO songs as a guest appearance at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. He was good then back in the early 2000’s!
Saw The Who several times, but in Geensboro, NC in the 70's we had third row seats right in front of Entwisle. He blew me away for two hours. Best bass I've ever heard.
I saw them in the early 80s, outside, the Cotton Bowl. It was pretty damn loud. But the energy, good grief!
I've seen a LOT of bands over the last 60 years but the Who were my favorite. I was lucky enough to see them when Keith Moon was still alive.

Yep, Zak Starkey basically has been the Who's drummer for years. He was behind the kit when I got to take my son to see them in 2015 and I think he still is there drummer these days
I'd highly recommend The Real Me from the same concert. Another Entwistle highlight but Zak Starkey kills it as well and the resto of the band. Amazing band!
