The live 1978 version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" is great, with amazing performances by Townshend, Entwistle, Daltrey, but was filmed only weeks before Keith Moon's death. As good as Moon was, by 1978 he was only a shadow of his usual drumming ability. To see Moon at his peak, check out "A Quick One While He's Away", recoreded live at the "Rolling Stones R&R Circus". Maybe the Greatest drumming "performance" ever filmed. Also check out The Who's "Young Man Blues" live at Isle of Wight 1970.

Watching Keith and Pete feeding off each other as the performance gets more intense by the minutes is a thing of beauty. Roger Daltrey's vocals are so intense, at times he uses 2 microphones simultaneously. And John Entwistle keeps it all together, steady as an Ox on the bass! When you react to "Young Man Blue's" at Isle of Wight, keep in mind The Who started their set at about 2am and played until about 4:30am.
When you looked at the year and said 1971, it took me back and I took a quick look at the albums that year; who’s next, aqualung by Tull, sticky fingers from the stones, Led Zeppelin 4, fragile by Yes , and so many more. A great year for rock music
Totally agree! The late 60's into the early 70's were the best period in popular music, (the decade of 1966 to 1974????). And of all those year,1971 was likely the best. Every great band was at it's peak.

I strongly recommend listening to “The Real Me” and “5:15” Both are off the Quadrophenia album. The Real Me in particular is known as an incredible tour de force bass performance…. Along with some incredible drumming from our boy, Keith Moon. Did you know the Muppet named “Animal” (who was a drummer on the Muppet Show)was created as an homage to Moonie?
If you weren't paying attention to the lyrics, give it a closer listen. One of the greatest political anthems of all times, and maybe even more relevant today than it was then.
You also have to remember, my young friend, that this is a band that played at absolutely earsplitting volume pretty much all the time. Their record was 126 decibels, which is roughly the equivalent of standing next to a siren, and causes immediate hearing loss. And remember, there were no in-ear monitors back then. They stood right in front of it.

Saw the Who in Cardiff South Wales in the 60s just after Tommy came out. The band came on stage and Moon sat down and grabbed his mic and said,' Hello you Welsh bastards' and they went straight into the first number. Never forgotten that. Not too long after saw Led Zeppelin in same city. They were great times.

It's great to see you finally reacting to The Who. One of the most influential rock bands ever. From 1964-65 they were founders of the hard-rock "power-trio". Their Concept albums "Tommy", "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia" helped create "Prog-Rock". Their blistering performances had them often voted the best live band of 1960's/1970's.

I don't even much like the who, but Entwhistle's ability to create a cogent rhythm section with someone as unpredictable as Moon boggles my mind. The guy is so underrated. Ok Lee. Now it can be told. I saw them perform this live in 1973. Opening night at the Music Hall in Boston. 3 ROWS FROM THE STAGE DEAD IN FRONT OF PETE TOWNSHEND. Best concert and seating EVER!!! Excellent observation about what radio WAS and what it has become. This album has no even mediocre songs. Baba O’Reiley, Bargain and Behind Blue Eyes are excellent.

Never mind 1971 The who formed in 1964 and were outstanding and era defining from the outset. This is not an isolated must be their best song deal they are always this good. To start with go back to the beginning and do My Generation, you will get the gist. You have to grasp how good the 60's were .
This was one of the songs salvaged from PeteTownshend’s “Lifehouse” project, which had been intended as a follow-up rock opera to “Tommy”, but fell apart before completion. Townshend was a genius composer, probably the best of the era.

I bought this album in September of 1971. From the first time the needle hit the record Who’s Next has been my all-time favorite record. Every song is great. Seeing the band in concert at the height of their power was like no other band. Go for more!
One of the many standout moments in this song for me is the line Daltrey delivers "'Cause you know that the hypnotized never lie" answered a couple of bars later by Townshend's sardonic, half-murmured "Do ya?" Classic. 😮🎉
Keith Moon was legendary. Besides his amazing drumming ability, the band destroyed their instruments on stage regularly. Moon would trash hotel rooms, to a point that he was banned from Holiday Inn (Holiday Inn Express wasn't around back then) world wide and banned from the entire city of Flint, Michigan. There are so many stories on UA-cam of interviews with people who knew him and their stories are hilarious.

Hey Lee. This is one of those rare albums where every single track was played on just about every station throughout the decades -- some more than others, of course -- but each track is memorable. To me, it's a 5-Star (or perhaps even a 5 1/2 Stars) masterpiece of hard melodic rock - I strongly suggest, that even if you don't do any other reactions from Who's Next, you listen to the entire album during your off hours. Simply amazing. Quadrophenia, the follow-up album, is equally as excellent, although I'm unsure if I would rate that with the extra 1/2 Star - since it's longer and perhaps several of the tunes aren't as catchy (but neverthless awesome). If you do decide to continue with this album,I strongly suggest you start right at the very beginning with a song ("Baba O'Riley") that you might recognize - a classic that's been played as much as "Won't Get Foled Again" thanks to its unforgettable opening section. Anyway, enjoy!

“A once in a lifetime kinda song” says it perfectly. This anthem for the times was way ahead of its time. Find something to read on how Pete Townsend created the electronic synth loop using 1970’s technology. Phenomenal. Nothing like it had been heard before. Yes Quadrophenia is symphonic. You have to listen nto the whole album and the story it tell of dissafected kids in England in the 1950’s early ’60’s. You’re also right about radio and tv being so fragmented. We all listened to everything back then. Maybe didn’t LIKE it all, but heard it. I could show you Top 40 lists where Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Who and Freddy Fender (Country Western singer) were all on the chart at once

In 1971 I bought Who's Next, After the Gold Rush, Ten Years After's A Space in Time + John Lennon Debut @ Flo's Record store in Pittsburgh Freshman year college 4 LPs for $10. Got my money's worth. Great reactions. Who's Next is a sonic experience w headphones + volume.

Your remarks on today’s music versus the classic period (mid 60s to mid 70s) is so 100% spot on. This is but one outstanding track, as you have noted. Another one that really hits home and demonstrates the unity and one-ness of the music and culture of the times - the Beatles’ Hey Jude, live on the David Frost TV show. It is virtually identical to the studio version, but visually captures the generational mood of the time so very well indeed. Please give it a listen.
Moon layed it all out on this track, blood and sweat. If you have ever tried to drum along, the last minute of the drums, (right before the synthisizer solo) is just mind-boggling to keep up with. Exausting and thrilling to try and play. On Keith's very last drum hit, you can just hear him in the background giving a yell. Likely, Moon's arms and legs were blasted by that point. Great to listen to the "isolated drum track" for "Fooled Again", the yell is a bit clearer too.
Pete Townshend (pronounced "towns end") does a lot of the lead vocals in The Who too. He has the softer, higher voice, while Daltrey has the gruff, gritty voice.
When I was 10 I got a record player, 1 album, and one 45rpm single for christmas. The album was Elvis Live in Hawaii and the single was Won't Get Fooled Again. Even though The Beatles, Metallica, Tool and Opeth are my favorite bands this song is still in my all time favorites playlist. And yes I know that my favorites are all over the spectrum, especially considering that Mel Torme and Vivaldi are on there also.
I saw the Who's farewell tour in early 90's in DC (forget the year to be honest-I'm getting old and the mind don't work so well anymore). Washington D.C. RFK stadium, ended show with Baba O'Riley (so awesome), set included Boris the Spider (one of my fave's). After show was entering the Metro to shuttle back to northern Virginia when the escalator collapsed and alot of people were seriously hurt. Everyone was pitching in to help others. Music brings people together.
Check out Amazing Journey/Sparks from their Live at Leeds album, as it shows some of Keith's chops. It was recorded shortly before this album came out and shows The Who at their best. Raw, Powerful and incredibly gifted.
there's an incredible multi camera version of 'Young Man Blues' from the Isle of Wight performance - a good chance to really concentrate on Keith Moons drumming when The Who were really at the top of their game on live performances, well worth to watch for a drummer

An undeniably great track and possibly one of the greatest basslines ever created by John Entwistle.
Hey Lee. This is one of those rare albums where every single track was played on just about every station throughout the decades -- some more than others, of course -- but each track is memorable. To me, it's a 5-Star (or perhaps even a 5 1/2 Stars) masterpiece of hard melodic rock - I strongly suggest, that even if you don't do any other reactions from Who's Next, you listen to the entire album during your off hours. Simply amazing. Quadrophenia, the follow-up album, is equally as excellent, although I'm unsure if I would rate that with the extra 1/2 Star - since it's longer and perhaps several of the tunes aren't as catchy (but neverthless awesome). If you do decide to continue with this album,I strongly suggest you start right at the very beginning with a song ("Baba O'Riley") that you might recognize - a classic that's been played as much as "Won't Get Foled Again" thanks to its unforgettable opening section. Anyway, enjoy!

“A once in a lifetime kinda song” says it perfectly. This anthem for the times was way ahead of its time. Find something to read on how Pete Townsend created the electronic synth loop using 1970’s technology. Phenomenal. Nothing like it had been heard before.
Yes Quadrophenia is symphonic. You have to listen nto the whole album and the story it tell of dissafected kids in England in the 1950’s early ’60’s.
You’re also right about radio and tv being so fragmented. We all listened to everything back then. Maybe didn’t LIKE it all, but heard it. I could show you Top 40 lists where Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Who and Freddy Fender (Country Western singer) were all on the chart at once

The Who were one of the great bands to see live. I saw them twice in 1968 and 1971 and I'm glad I saw them when Enwistle and Moon were still with us.
Top 10 album of mine. Song is timeless and lyrics ageless and spot on.
In 1971 I bought Who's Next, After the Gold Rush, Ten Years After's A Space in Time + John Lennon Debut @ Flo's Record store in Pittsburgh Freshman year college 4 LPs for $10. Got my money's worth. Great reactions. Who's Next is a sonic experience w headphones + volume.

Your remarks on today’s music versus the classic period (mid 60s to mid 70s) is so 100% spot on. This is but one outstanding track, as you have noted. Another one that really hits home and demonstrates the unity and one-ness of the music and culture of the times - the Beatles’ Hey Jude, live on the David Frost TV show. It is virtually identical to the studio version, but visually captures the generational mood of the time so very well indeed. Please give it a listen.

Moon layed it all out on this track, blood and sweat. If you have ever tried to drum along, the last minute of the drums, (right before the synthisizer solo) is just mind-boggling to keep up with. Exausting and thrilling to try and play. On Keith's very last drum hit, you can just hear him in the background giving a yell. Likely, Moon's arms and legs were blasted by that point. Great to listen to the "isolated drum track" for "Fooled Again", the yell is a bit clearer too.

Pete Townshend (pronounced "towns end") does a lot of the lead vocals in The Who too. He has the softer, higher voice, while Daltrey has the gruff, gritty voice.
Who's Next is still on my playlist after all these years.

When I was 10 I got a record player, 1 album, and one 45rpm single for christmas. The album was Elvis Live in Hawaii and the single was Won't Get Fooled Again. Even though The Beatles, Metallica, Tool and Opeth are my favorite bands this song is still in my all time favorites playlist. And yes I know that my favorites are all over the spectrum, especially considering that Mel Torme and Vivaldi are on there also.

I saw the Who's farewell tour in early 90's in DC (forget the year to be honest-I'm getting old and the mind don't work so well anymore). Washington D.C. RFK stadium, ended show with Baba O'Riley (so awesome), set included Boris the Spider (one of my fave's). After show was entering the Metro to shuttle back to northern Virginia when the escalator collapsed and alot of people were seriously hurt. Everyone was pitching in to help others. Music brings people together.

Check out Amazing Journey/Sparks from their Live at Leeds album, as it shows some of Keith's chops. It was recorded shortly before this album came out and shows The Who at their best. Raw, Powerful and incredibly gifted.
there's an incredible multi camera version of 'Young Man Blues' from the Isle of Wight performance - a good chance to really concentrate on Keith Moons drumming when The Who were really at the top of their game on live performances, well worth to watch for a drummer
