Answers to a few common questions: Q: Why aren't you playing Black Ops 2? A: Since making this video I played BO2 for the first time. I will make a video for that game soon! Q: Why are you censoring the swastikas? A: As a history teacher it is never ideal to censor history. It's important that people see history as it is, without filters. As a relatively new content creator on UA-cam I'm testing the waters to see what is acceptable under the terms of use. I decided to censor the swastikas in the first minute to see if UA-cam would allow the uncensored swastikas later in the video. I haven't had any issues so far, so I'll try to avoid censoring in the future. Q: Do you show this video to your students? A: No. In the classroom I make references to videogames and use different types of media to engage my students when appropriate, but it wouldn't be right to use my platform as a teacher to promote my UA-cam channel instead of focusing on rigorous instruction. Q: Can you do this same type of video for _______________? A: I am always open to suggestions and feedback! Please feel free to leave your ideas in the comments :) I really didn't expect these videos to do so well, thank you all so much! I'm extremely grateful for your time, support, constructive criticism, and engagement. See you in the next video!
Man this video was awesome this is the game I grew up playing as a kid and many times over into adulthood. It made me a big war history buff or at least when it comes to ww2. I used to watch a ton of documentaries, movies and read up on it. Although, I never clearly understood COD:WAW's timeline until now so thank you! Also I really liked that you cited the different books you drew on in the video!
I also want to point out that importantly another war crimes committed during the Pacific War was the Interment of Japanese Americans back home, In February 1942 only weeks after Pearl Harbor was attacked 120,000 Japanese American citizens were locked up in camps under FDR's Executive Order 9066 which is now seen as a grave mistake due to anti Japanese racism mentioned in this video and suspicion of sabotage and disloyalty
Fun fact on the mission “Burn Em Out” you can hear imperial soldiers yelling “Api” “Api” or “Panas” meaning hot in Indonesian when imperial soldiers are being lit on fire by American troops. This implies that Japan had Indonesian soldiers in the imperial army during the battle of Peleliu. Small details like that shows the creativity and passion the developers had when putting their hard work of implementing small details in World At War’s development. In my opinion small details like that gives world at war a pretty authentic capture of the horrors of World War II. I truly believe we will never get a game like world at war again since it would most likely be censored out by today’s society.
A good details, but it doesn't really make sense if you pay too much attention and realize that those burning japanese soldiers were speaking Japanese in completely different voices just before getting burned lol
my favorite of the small details is that as you storm the reichstag the soldiers go from regular army to wounded fanatical ss soldiers yelling nazi shit at you. really gives the impression that germany was desperate and couldn't have won the war. it was a matter of when they lost, not if
Indonesian here, just wanna clarify that while "Panas" does means hot, the word "Api" means fire. Sometimes I forget that the Japanese were in my country during the war and drafted the locals to fight in the Pacific and possibly other southeast Asian countries. That said, knowing this... I'll probably be weirded out if I ever replay this game but it won't stop me from using the flamethrower if given lol
TheFrosty's video is better in basically every way since it does report on the actual history in specific detail while being appreciative of the game's overall approach to history. He only really fumbled when trying to integrate an add at the beginning with the accuracy details (which he later removed).
@@queuedjar4578 His Vanguard video was okay, but ever since that his videos have only gotten longer and longer with the most nitpicky of details, even covering gun inaccuracies which are out of topic. An autistic rambling can only go on for so long until it stops being entertaining.
The goal was to give people the big picture context for the events of the game. I thought that nitpicking all the inaccuracies would detract from the overall story, plus others have already done that. Thanks for your appreciation!
Grim fact: in Heart of the Reich and Downfall, as you make your way closer and closer the the Reichstag and even enter it, you start to see German soldiers who have several bandages on them. Some are wrapped around their arms, others on their legs, and even around their heads. It actually made me think back to that cutscene of Reznov talking about the old, the weak, and the young, and how they were all called to arms. Extremely dark. Also, the end cutscene of the game doesn’t feel like you won and beat the enemy like other COD campaigns do. The music is somber and even a bit quiet, where it also showed that message of the fatality numbers of the war, and how deadly it was. Stuff like this is why I absolutely love WAW’s campaign. It’s truly depicts the horrors of war, and how destructive it truly is, no matter the era or period of time.
Also in Downfall many german models are smaller, they are meant to be younger boys aka hitler youth/volksturm teens thrown alongside the wounded for a last stand
I wish TreyArch would go back to the gritty World at War style. I know their intend with this game in particular was like you said, to show the "horrors of war". But I do miss the amputations and realism in gameplay. Bless Black Ops1 for continuing this story. Still hoping for a remaster bundle pack
The original WW2 Call of Duty’s 1,2,3, and WAW all told the story of sacrifice and struggle that regular soldiers went through. The y told the story’s with respect and honor toward those who fought in them and focused on the history and implications of war. One of my favorite things was the quotes after you died in battle in the campaign. Made it really sink in.
Correction about the Reichstag, Hitler never gave speeches inside the Reichstag, as the building was burnt to a crisp when Hitler assumed full control over the German people. (Hitler also just didn't like the building) The room with the giant eagle was not in the Reichstag, but in the building opposite of it, the Kroll Opera House. The room with the eagle in game is based off of the real debate chamber that was inside the Reichstag, but the devs took the giant eagle from the Opera House and placed it in there for dramatic affect. So it's a mistake on WaW's end but man was this game so good. Great video!!
It's not a mistake. They deliberately put it there. Besides its a historical fact that the Soviets wanted the Reichstag since its the seat of the government. And the Soviets wanted it for that exact reason. So no its not a mistake on the devs end but its a symbolic representation of an Empire'a downfall. Hence the mission's "Downfall". It wouldn't make sense to show them raiding and fighting inside the Kroll Opera House since its not historically factual.
Also whats amazing abt WaW is that people have to literally do a in depth forensic investigation of every single detail in the game just to put it under scrutiny. To criticize the historical inaccuracies of WaW you have to chereypick the smallest sht
I'm glad you listed unit 731, I don't think it gets enough attention on how insane and dedicated Japan was to winning the war and occupying more countries!
Not me but this game came out in my last year of elementary school. I was 11 from that time but this game showed a lot of history lessons from the game. I like old COD games. Call of duty 2 to MW3.

My Uncle's father himself was a Pacific veteran on the USS California at Saipan, I'm also privileged to know Eugene Iconetti who was a US Marine on Roi Numur, Saipan and Iwo Jima where he saw the flag raising on Surabachi and was a combat engineer carrying satchel charges like in the game, He now is 100 and lives in Teaneck NJ and is a member of my VFW
@hoodedbeasts Same, I'm also friends with August Caccavone who was in the Battle Of The Bulge during the rescue of Bastogne with the 106th Infantry and later 7th Army in Germany and also believe it or not saw Soviet Red Army soldiers when they linked up at the Elbe River, He remembers with them on a train and they said words in broken english and were nice guys despite the brutality of the Eastern Front
This was one of the first ps3 games I ever got back in like elementary school and it’s just been rent free in my head ever since. The entire game just has this super eerie vibe to it and it feels so unique in the series. I remember just being shocked after playing it that my grandfather survived the pacific front lol
Great video, CoD: WaW is my favorite CoD of all time, I played it when it came out (I think I was in 6th grade at the time) and remember my grandpa being impressed with the emphasis on historical accuracy and the brutal portrayal of WWII; he was a history buff on the subject since his father flew on bombers during WWII. Interesting fact, the fountain scene with Reznov is almost a direct recreation of a scene from "Enemy at the Gates" a movie about a sharpshooter in the Red Army.
This type of content is the missing piece to the puzzle. I’d love to see you dive into some of these topics more, brother. You have a real opportunity to make it. This. This is my favorite game of all time, and you explained 100% why. Little known bit about this game too, if you do end up ending the German soldiers that gave up during the Russian missions, Chernov’s journal will change to reflect your actions. If you leave them, he calls you a heroic and if you end the soldiers, he calls you a monster. I never felt like a monster, until Chernov pointed out to me that my ways were cruel. Although, I never experienced that as a kid, and when I did as an adult, it surprised me. Made me think about my approach through things. It’s not just about making your way through the city, it’s also about maintaining your humanity. Edit: adding thoughts.
History was always my favorite subject in HS. My teacher taught us what she had to, then taught us to research the true history. I miss that lady. She died my senior year. I love how your video explains things fairly well for the time allotted.
"The older games try to integrate real historical events throughout the campaigns" And that's where I started learning more about world war 2. My high school history teacher didn't engage the class I was in very effectively on the eastern front and concentration camps since all I really cared about was playing video games and flunking my grades here and there. Fast forward to graduation, my free adult life years and a replaying of WaW, my interest in the pacific theatre exploded. All these abandoned atoll bases in the pacific, imperial Japan's inevitable defeat and the technological peak of the US navy? I wish I had some sort of glass ball to peer into the past
One of the last great WW2 COD Games, the ambiance and atmosphere is chilling, the music throughout the game also help show the true horror of war, RIP to those who gave their lives. ❤
This video was incredible. The old cod games had an amazing attention to detail and added so much character to the game the new ones don’t really have.
Thank you for putting the time, energy, and thoughtfulness into producing this video. It's something I've always wanted to do but never put in the work. Thankful! And subscribed :).
Love this, two of my favorite things, world history and Call of Duty. It’s a shame most games now completely disregard historical events in games. My favorite part of playing these games as a kid was reading books about the wars and events after beating the games. Please keep these videos coming! Edit: also I forgot to mention this is my favorite ending to a Call of Duty game. The finals scenes showing the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, followed by the bell tolling with the message of 60 million people killed during the most deadly conflict in history sent shivers down my spine as a kid, the game showed us that war is not glorious and fun like in the games.
As a 17 year old who loves history and wants to become a U.S history or world history teacher and really loved COD WAW, this video gained a like from me! I’ll check out some of your other videos!
Bro I've just found the channel of Yours And the level of professionalism considering you're doing it for passion is suprising Keep up with the good work Also I really hope that in the future we'll live to see another game alike World War cause it described and portrayed what the War really is Horror Bloody, unfair, random acts of honor and hecking horrific scenes In the war time there are no heroes
Awesome video! One of my favorite games ever. I’m playing through it on veteran and the enemy throws about 15 grenades with MLB accuracy constantly lol
One of the absolute best video games focussing on the world wars. Felt sometimes heroic and inspiring but the overall tone of the game also didn't shy away from showing the more darker and more psychologically disturbing aspects of actual war. The scenes and the sound track always had me on edge.
Are you serious? There are dozens and dozens of amazing military history videos out there. One channel literally did it week by week for the entire war. It just ended for them this year.
Love this video! Really rubs shoulders with TheFrosty1's video on World at War where he points out and correcta some small inaccurate details from the gear, uniform, location, etc.
It's honestly a shame the newer games no longer pay any respect to historical wars, let alone modern wars. I can go on and on about Vanguard. All I have to say is... It's shockingly bad. And the newer MW games sheepishly beat around touchy subjects like Al-Queda and the highway of death by creating fictional factions/countries and shifting blame onto other nations. It's spineless writing.
@@gabrielwiktorowicz3281None of us are denying that Russia has done, and still does, awful things. I still firmly believe they do worse things than America, but it's disingenuous as hell to take a real event that was a US matter and blame that on Russia. And I know there's still a lot of debate on the topic itself, whether it was a justified attack on armed personnel or a slaughter of innocent civilians, I'm just stating it's a US matter at the end of the day.
Man I loved this historical analysis of the events portrayed in CoD WAW. I love history and is my favourite number 1 topic/subject in education. I wish you were my high school history teacher. You are doing a fantastic job 🔥🫡
I think the reason (seriously) why I almost got an MA in history was because of the CoD series and watching the history channel growing up! Great video.
This game sparked my interest in history. My mom wouldn’t let me play it because it was rated M so I just searched everything I could about the game, which led to me watching endless ww2 movies and documentaries I became obsessed with the eastern front.
I wish this game got a remake or even a prequel for the early war i love how creepy and depressing the tone is compared to cod now it makes you feel a certain way
I'm studying to become a History teacher too. I'm so glad we're young enough to use modern media like Call of Duty, something we enjoyed as kids and teens and relate it to History.
Also the one thing I like about World at War is that you can actually do the very complex method of reloading an M1 Garand midclip because most games, including Call of Duty 1, 2, and 3 needs you to empty the clip before reloading all just to get the *PING!*
Great video, hope you keep going with other historical games after COD (or even nonhistorical games you could view with this kind of top down view) fantastic editing especially
I love this video. I played this campaign probably before I was 10 even? Didn’t understand nor was skeptical of the weapons portrayed and actions, such as the hung German soldiers or brutal executions of the Red Army. It’s strange to think about, but I was too young to grasp that. World at War has got to be the darkest entry in the franchise and I really love the direction it took! It’s not just a game, it’s a total work of art.
This was one heck of a video man. Im a history nerd and hearing you talk about all of this made me thankful for the men who gave their lives. Also Semper Fidelis to all the leathernecks who fought against japan!
Same, Eugene Iconetti who have gave a shout out here saw the flag raising on Iwo Jima, He's been in bed and is now 100 but I wish he's doing fine so I can show him this
Great video, I love the more historical CoD games and they were a big introduction into my interest in history so it's nice to see someone talking about them
Out of every subject history and social studies were my favorite. All the teachers I had relating to that subject were cool as fuck and from the looks of it they all were. Happy for your students I hope you’re being compensated fairly like you should for educating americas youth
My great grandfather was in pattons 3rd armored division. From Normandy to Dessau. He helped free the people in Dora-mittelbau. The man survived the entire war to one day have a family, that would have their own family, then another family that would lead to my life existing the bravery of the men who fought for the entire world is indescribable.
I loved this game, especially for the music. Every piece is just harrowing and really makes you feel the dread and torment this war caused entire populations the world over.
I legitmately played these cod games when i was in high school (2007-2011) & they helped me pass all the exams i needed to finish high school but this is an interesting for sure
@@kstreet7438 of course i had knowledge from the class, but i was able to use these games to ask more information about certain topics that to me didn't get enough coverage for like stalingrad in my class it wasn't spoken about much, so with these games I was able to learn the most & applied my knowledge to my tests
@@nWo_remiix because the way you worried it makes it seem like playing this video game was enough to pass tests. It's not even close. I just recently played it and if it was my only source of information I'd fail the test
There’s a lot of inaccuracy to the game but it does it in a very creative way, the Germans are using M2 Flamethrowers throughout the campaign and in the mission “Vendetta” there are Tiger Tanks shown to be present even though tiger tanks were produced late 1942 yet were deployed to the Don Front in support of the German drive to Stalingrad in 1942. However, the battalion arrived too late to participate in Operation Winter Storm, Panzer IV’s would’ve been historically accurate instead. That’s just my thoughts on the details, In conclusion it shows Tiger tanks present in Stalingrad in September of 1942, Yet Tiger tanks arrived 3 months later narrowly missing action of the urban combat of Stalingrad.

I absolutely love these videos! Awesome stuff
you’ve got a great voice for explaining history. i’d definitely watch some videos focused on other topics.
This video was incredible. The old cod games had an amazing attention to detail and added so much character to the game the new ones don’t really have.
Thank you for putting the time, energy, and thoughtfulness into producing this video. It's something I've always wanted to do but never put in the work. Thankful! And subscribed :).
Love the fact your covering world at war 🎉
100% agree about that ending! Glad you enjoyed it:)
Amazing video, I’m glad you included the intensity of the music, it’s like I was there playing it once again for the first time as you described it
This was such a beautifully haunting game & my first Call of Duty.. I wish the franchise would go back to this era
Instant subscribe! I love channels I can listen to dying my commute 😊
Bless this video. You’re a legend for this one
As a 17 year old who loves history and wants to become a U.S history or world history teacher and really loved COD WAW, this video gained a like from me! I’ll check out some of your other videos!
Bro I've just found the channel of Yours
And the level of professionalism considering you're doing it for passion is suprising
Keep up with the good work
Also
I really hope that in the future we'll live to see another game alike World War cause it described and portrayed what the War really is
Horror
Bloody, unfair, random acts of honor and hecking horrific scenes
In the war time there are no heroes
This is a fantastic channel for new history lovers. Keep it up!
These videos are so awesome. God bless you and I hope your students don’t take you for granted.
high quality content for my algorithm. i didn’t even know i liked this kinda stuff until i ran into you. keep it going!!!!
The atomic bomb was only developed in los alamos the testing was south east of Socorro and north west of Tularosa New Mexico. Great video
I get such a nostalgia from this game it actually makes me want to cry
I love the way you explained everything keep up the good work
I wonder how long until UA-cam is gonna pay you more than teaching does. Your videos are extremely informative and well made. Keep it up!
Awesome video! One of my favorite games ever. I’m playing through it on veteran and the enemy throws about 15 grenades with MLB accuracy constantly lol
As a lover of history you have earned my follow with 1 video. Well spoken and intelligent, I look forward to coming along for the ride.
History teachers chill af
One of the absolute best video games focussing on the world wars.
Felt sometimes heroic and inspiring but the overall tone of the game also didn't shy away from showing the more darker and more psychologically disturbing aspects of actual war. The scenes and the sound track always had me on edge.
This is the kind of content that I love but can never get enough from; great stuff!
These are the types of UA-cam videos I’ve been waiting for over a decade!! 👏🏼
It's spineless writing.
the highway of death thing actually made me so mad when i played it. WE DID THAT!!! NOT RUSSIA
@@boinqity4621 To be fair Russia obliterated a convoy of INNOCENT PEOPLE trying to enter Russian territory in 1999, (Baku-Rostov Highway bombing).
I can see this channel blowing up with subscribers
also, the first part of the mission 'vendetta' is a 1-to-1 reference to the movie 'enemy at the gates'
This was really good and very entertaining you deserve more views
4:35 Artillery observer here, grid and polar mission math is more fun though, lol. Map, pencil, protractor, and maybe compass is all you need
The RTCW soundtrack🔥🔥🔥
This game sparked my interest in history. My mom wouldn’t let me play it because it was rated M so I just searched everything I could about the game, which led to me watching endless ww2 movies and documentaries I became obsessed with the eastern front.
I wish this game got a remake or even a prequel for the early war i love how creepy and depressing the tone is compared to cod now it makes you feel a certain way
Im not a hs teacher im a museum educator, and this man is godsend
I'm studying to become a History teacher too. I'm so glad we're young enough to use modern media like Call of Duty, something we enjoyed as kids and teens and relate it to History.
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll make a great teacher :)
As a fellow historian, I thank you for showcasing how magnificent this game is and how it portrays the atrocities and horrors of this war.
Brother brought out the execution pistol at 14:26 lmao
Also the one thing I like about World at War is that you can actually do the very complex method of reloading an M1 Garand midclip because most games, including Call of Duty 1, 2, and 3 needs you to empty the clip before reloading all just to get the *PING!*
One of my history teachers showed the class a 2001 film Enemy at the Gates and reminded me of the mission Vendetta
That’s insane, I never knew that was real footage of the bomb
Great video, hope you keep going with other historical games after COD (or even nonhistorical games you could view with this kind of top down view) fantastic editing especially
Not sure if someone mentioned that before but the Reznov and Petrenko fountain scene was also in the movie Enemy at the Gates
(4:20)
Wow that’s cool I never knew the origin of the “thousand yard stare” meme. Thanks!
Fr I was 8 😆 shows what my dad thought about my innocence 💀
Fellow Social studies teacher here(I’m stuck in 9th grade world geography,) glad I found your channel!
This is awesome! You're making me want to start playing these games!
This was one heck of a video man. Im a history nerd and hearing you talk about all of this made me thankful for the men who gave their lives. Also Semper Fidelis to all the leathernecks who fought against japan!
I love how you used some Return to Castle Wolfenstein's music in this!
I wish my history teacher was this cool
This is quite literally the content i love , CoD and history , go head now teach
Same, Eugene Iconetti who have gave a shout out here saw the flag raising on Iwo Jima, He's been in bed and is now 100 but I wish he's doing fine so I can show him this
Great video, I love the more historical CoD games and they were a big introduction into my interest in history so it's nice to see someone talking about them
Subbed right away also thank you for not making this video too long.
My friend Sy was too from 1955-1957, Sy also was stationed at Fort Knox KY and was guarding the gold stash there
This may be my favorite COD. Excellent work
I’m a simple man. I see a waw analysis video. I click. I like.
I absolutely doubt these games helped you pass any tests. Maybe like a few questions lol. The game doesn't even tell you what day the war started
@@kstreet7438 of course i had knowledge from the class, but i was able to use these games to ask more information about certain topics that to me didn't get enough coverage for like stalingrad in my class it wasn't spoken about much, so with these games I was able to learn the most & applied my knowledge to my tests
@@nWo_remiixso it's better to say this game gave you inspiration. Same for me.
@@kstreet7438 its better to say that why?
@@nWo_remiix because the way you worried it makes it seem like playing this video game was enough to pass tests. It's not even close. I just recently played it and if it was my only source of information I'd fail the test
i would love more history teacher explains content thats tied to games
Black Cats will always be my favorite mission because of how awesome the soundtrack is
4:20 ahh, that’s where that meme is from
Banger video man thank you
There’s a lot of inaccuracy to the game but it does it in a very creative way, the Germans are using M2 Flamethrowers throughout the campaign and in the mission “Vendetta” there are Tiger Tanks shown to be present even though tiger tanks were produced late 1942 yet were deployed to the Don Front in support of the German drive to Stalingrad in 1942. However, the battalion arrived too late to participate in Operation Winter Storm, Panzer IV’s would’ve been historically accurate instead. That’s just my thoughts on the details, In conclusion it shows Tiger tanks present in Stalingrad in September of 1942, Yet Tiger tanks arrived 3 months later narrowly missing action of the urban combat of Stalingrad.
damn your the coolest highschool history teacher ever 😭
We need less infuriating nit picking of inaccuracies and more content like this, may the algorithm bless this man
