HERE WE GO! Welcome and thank you for joining me on this journey through the Metal Gear Solid series! Snake Eater is SO MUCH FUN so far, already loving it. The length of this first episode is proof enough of that I think 🤣
REMINDER: This is a first/blind playthrough, pre-recorded videos, not livestreams. I know a lot of you guys watching are basically veterans of these games, and sometimes watching a newcomer discovering a game you know inside out can be frustrating (believe me, I know). Please just keep in mind I'm doing my best and I can't know everything like you do! Hopefully my journey can give you back some of that feeling of playing for the first time through my experience 💚
As usual: I am not done with playing the game yet, so please don't post any spoilers for this game or for future MGS games. Tips you give in the comments might not be applied either since I've already filmed a couple of episodes by now.
Thank you and I hope you enjoy!

This gameplay is atrocious and i love it 😂. do not be embarrassed EVERY SINGE PERSON I see play these games struggles.
Kojima controls are wonky and not easy at all. the difficulty comes from making yourself look cool playing it. it's always been that way (Death stranding included). mastering the controls in mgs 2 for me was such an amazing feeling. just as in dying constantly in souls games can be a draw for its audience, so is struggling with mgs controls 😂. id minimize the cuts as much as possible. stay around areas mess with the enemy AI, practice the basics try new things get spotted who cares. do not restart levels or let them kill you try fighting back, go with the flow make decisions on the fly. just try stuff as much as you can.
and you are doing a great job so far.

Don't listen to those who don't like the codec calling, these games evolved through an era where story telling was at its peak and information within the fibers of the games were integral, the codec provides all, you are playing the games perfect 👌🏻 that's how we all played in 1998, 2001 etc.

Here are a few things to do in this game:
    1. Call everyone when wearing each camo/facepaint.
    2. Call sigint while holding each weapon/item.
Don't forget to call sigint when wearing the naked camo, and again while under a cardboard box. These 2 calls are some of the funniest in the whole game.

I'm not someone who watches livestreams or stuff, never got into Twitch and on UA-cam I don't watch others play, I'd rather play myself, I only watch reactions from time to time of topics I like. However when you began with MGS1 (I think you were only two chapters in) I just found you looking for people who never played MGS to see their reactions in the plot twists and got so hooked into your gameplays.
I watched a few others but they mostly played live and then uploaded an edited version but, as someone else said here in the comments, I hate how distracted they get, they are sometimes watching too much the comments, missing important parts or getting spoiled by the foreshadowing of people in the chat. But how you do it is great, besides you are always so hooked and paying attention and theorizing (many times you are right beforehand about twists) that it's so engaging. I watched all the MGS1 and MGS2 series (I was looking forward every day I got into youtube if you uploaded the next part) and of course I will watch this one as well.
Seeing someone like you enjoying your first playthrough of my favourite saga of all time brings me a lot of joy. I discovered MGS back in 2001 and it changed me, I was 10yo and I stopped seeing videogames as a pastime to see them as a form of art. Ever since I use Snake as my nickname every time I can. And MGS2 (exactly today, July 1st, marks the 22nd anniversary since I got it) is my favourite game of all time, not just the saga. The hype I had for every new entry is something I can't describe, none other videogame caused me that.
Anyway, thank you Whimsy if you read all of this and just some advice going forward. After MGS3 you have to play MGS4 and I don't know if you have the means to do that, if you have a PS3 then great, I don't think it will be hard for you to get the game cheap. Otherwise the only alternative is the RCPS3 emulator if you have a good computer and specially a good CPU, nowadays it's playable but it takes a lot of tinkering to make it work perfectly.
After that Peace Walker (emulations is probably your best option, either from PSP or preferably RCPS3) and then MGS V without a problem because it's on PS4. That's all the MGS you need. If you want to go beyond after that, the first choice should be Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (it's not canonical but it's an amazing game) and then the MSX games and Portable Ops for the PSP.
I really hope you can get to play MGS4 and we can get to watch that. Thank you for your videos.

As a general tip: after stunning or putting an enemy to sleep, the number of stars or Z's above their head indicate how close they are to waking up. The fewer, the closer.
IIRC: different stuns will produce different amounts of stars (e.g. CQC hit combo > basic CQC throw)

Ahhh, you've finally reached MGS3. I was a game reviewer back when this came out, and was fortunate to cover it. MGS3 is one of my all-time favorite games, and that's not something I say lightly. In the decades since, I've gone back through all the MGS games systematically, looking for every secret, trick, easter egg, etc. I could find and posting them online. I also speedrun MGS3 every once in a while. So, here are a few notes:
Certain aspects of the game are indeed impacted by the passage of time in real life. This is due to the game reading your system's internal clock settings. And it's not just restoring your health by saving, or if your food rots; try thinking outside the box as to how real time passing could impact something in-game.
There are _many_ ways to experiment with different items, weapons, and your surroundings. If something can be interacted with, chances are it's for a good reason. Take some time to mess around. For example, the ropes on the bridge can be cut to destabilize it. Mouse traps are good for catching animals that can't be seen by your eyes or equipment. You can also mess with Sokolov before meeting him by shooting or throwing live animals near him. You can make Snake throw up by spinning him around for long enough in the model viewer in the menu. Also, you missed your chance to kill Ocelot while he was unconscious. Seriously, look it up. Be sure to check any/all lockers you might find. Some have excellent rewards. Make sure to completely loot any buildings you infiltrate; MGS3's item/weapon list is massive compared to those in the previous games. Some weapons/items have to be unlocked, but you probably won't get on one playthrough.
There are many, _many_ ways to mess with the guards as well. CQC, drowning, burning, electrocution, shooting radios... Throwing live poisonous animals at them is fun, as is tempting/distracting/poisoning starving guards with rotten food. You'll be surprised by what you can use TNT on. _All_ of the bosses have hidden secondary strategies to beat them; thinking outside the box will help you immensely. Sometimes these are intentional, others are due to programming bugs. I'll just say that the Cig Gas Spray is my go-to weapon for the final battle. Beating bosses by depleting their stamina will reward you with boss camos, each of which has hidden abilities.
I won't say how or when, but the cardboard box has one of the most counterintuitive, yet useful hidden abilities that you'll never expect. There is a specific part of the game where you'll never think to use it, and that's _exactly_ where you should. Try looking it up later. Also, there is a fast travel system.
There are Codec/radio calls for literally every aspect of the game. They spared no expense for the voice acting this time around, so definitely take some time to indulge. You'll find all sorts of interesting details. This is the best support team in the series.
Make sure you take a good look around during those R1 prompts; they sometimes have something important. For example, you missed a big secret during the R1 prompt after Snake gets thrown off the bridge and washes up by the river. Also, there are hidden R1 scenes that never display button prompts. I recommend that you look them up after you finish the game, as some are spoilerific.
Lastly, you've got some... interesting theories with regards to the story. Why did The Boss defect? Who was that woman in the chopper with Volgin and Ocelot? Who was that ghost guy that was lurking behind The Boss? How are The Patriots involved in this? Just some things to ponder over.

Yayy, I’ve been waiting for the start of this series since I came across your channel! Just as a tip to see some of the fun Easter eggs, you can go into first person view in most cutscenes by pressing R1, even when there’s no on-screen prompt

Oh my god, you spent sooooo much time on the codec! I love it!
One bit of advice, if you or anyone is interested: For boss battles, give it a go first without several calls. One of the best parts of MGS bosses is figuring out yourself the quirks and secrets and the different weaknesses they have. Repeated calls results in the game just spelling it out for you.
PS good decision on starting over with The Bosses introduction! Super important interaction.

Normally don’t do this but since this is my favorite game of all time and I loved the previous play thoughts I became a member just to watch this. Also as you’ve probably noticed this game has by far the most codex calls in all the games but most of the calls are great. After playing this game and previous two I’m sure the urge to play mgs4 is gonna be big. I know it was for me back in the day.

Commenting this in the middle of the video so dunno if you've already realized this but this game (MGS2 also had it) has a lean/peek mechanic. When in first person view, use the L/R triggers to lean left and right, they're good for peeking through a corner and getting a shot in quickly. When in the grass and lockers, you can also use them and in fact press both at the same time to raise your head above the grass to get a better look at your surroundings. Kinda tricky at first but if you get the hang of it, it's extremely useful.
Also I think you press R3 to switch between traditional birds eye view camera and normal 3D camera.
As for CQC, you have to hold O while not moving to grab them, if you are moving then you do a takedown.

I love how thourough you are when it comes to playing games. You always take time to listen to as much codec calls as you can, you really pay attention to every details, both gameplaywise and storywise, and you are so good at theorizing, catching on every clue and figuring shit out that I never did on my first playthroughs. You're the best, Whimsy. It didn't take me long to subscribe and I'm sure you'll grow fast.
    Love from France.

53:55 The importance of first-person view is a little overstated in this version, because it now features the free-movement "third-person" camera that was introduced in the re-released "Substance", then later HD, version.
Click the R3 button (right stick) to switch to the overhead "normal" view, for a taste of how the original game played. In some areas, it is actually advantageous, because it was the director's decision on how the fixed camera was positioned for certain environment/scenes (the stick can also be titled, to see farther ahead, so it's not as limiting as previous games).
Anyway, I'm thoroughly enjoying your playthroughs. Keep up the good work!
EDIT: 2:01:16 Looks like you accidentally found out the overhead view option while fiddling with the sniper rifle controls 😄

32:15 I hate the suppressor durability.
01:13:05 It reads the clock from the console when you saved and then again when you load. That way the game knows how long you were taking a break.
01:44:00 Haha, I don't think I had those French subtitles. Maybe a bug?
02:07:00 Yeah, did the same thing for most situations like this. Just restart by lrtting them kill me.

Excellent point about mixing real world events with the games fiction. I've always felt the same way. It was done brilliantly. Enjoy the game, it's a great one. P.s.
If you click R3 you switch between over the shoulder view and top down. Over the shoulder view is the default and best way to play tho. Also, equipment weight effects your speed and stamina souls style.

12:01 Haha, yeah the unit system in the US military is all over the place. The US Army and Marine Corps for example use mostly the metric system as they meassure distances in meters and kilometers, whereas the US Air Force and Navy mostly use the imperial system. But it's not even that straight forward, for example I've seen US Army helicopters that show the outside air temperature in Celsius and the internal temperature in Fahrenheit on the same display. It really is all over the place 😄

I had never looked forward this much for a Let's Play series on UA-cam in my life!
Since your MGS1 video, I was highly hooked and satisfied by how you play this series (probably mentioned many times by many people: exhausting all the Codec.)
Many other UA-cam channels were either too distracted by the chat when they played and miss some important plots, some edited out the Codec section, and some are just impatient to do the Codec.
I don't know about other viewers but I don't mind you experiment the gameplay, gets a Game Over and Continue. Or maybe you mind getting game overs lol
A lot of the technique can be found by messing around, and I believe most people find the details/easter eggs through messing around and game overs.
Are you planning to do a reaction video on MGS3 Delta (Remake) trailer once you finished this whole game?
Super looking forward to your next episode!!!

2:40:40 Yup that’s the idea they were trying to convey there ^^ They are speaking Russian but we, the viewer/player, are hearing English.
Kojima actually originally wanted everyone to learn and speak Russian for the game and they were like… “Sir. No thank you.” And he’s like “Ok fine I guess I can make it so they’re speaking Russian without speaking Russian xD”
