  • Join me as I take my first flight on a Twin Otter aircraft (the smallest commercial aircraft i've flown so far) on the shortest mainland flight in the UK between Glasgow and Campbeltown.
It was a great flight with a few lumps and bumps along the way, but I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it!

Great Vid, and we're really lucky to have these twotters still flying the west coast. Good to see VK back in the air too - had a good look around it at the Hanagar tour.

Thanks - glad that you enjoyed it. It's a great wee aircraft, although defo showing its age in the cabin. Can only imagine how many take off and landing cycles this has done in 40+ years - incredible workhorses - and still gutted that I missed that hanger tour when the Saab 340 was retiring!

The smallest commercial aircraft I've flown on was a Fairchild MetroLiner III. I flew from Carlsbad, CA to LAX, a flight of about 35 minutes and it was in the late evening, Christmas Eve, 1988. The aircraft had an open door just as your Twin Otter did. Both pilots were dressed in Santa Claus outfits. It was absolutely gorgeous to watch them shoot an ILS into LAX and see all of the lights through the cockpit windows. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the ramp but was too small for a jet bridge, so we deplaned by stairs and walked across the ramp and up into the terminal. I love out of the ordinary flights like that, they are so enjoyable.

That sounds like it was such a fun flight - especially with the pilots dressed up. I'm hoping to do the beach landing at Barra at some point (also on the Twin Otter), and another bucket list item is the flight from Westray to Papa Westray on a Norman Islander (flight time is less than 2 minutes usually). Thanks for leaving me a comment - hope you enjoyed the video!

I love the drone of those engines on take-off! There's something about flying in a prop plane that feels like "real" flyng. Hope you have better weather next flight. Thanks for sharing!

I agree - loved the engine sounds on the aircraft - and it's one of the benefits of being on a smaller plane like this one. Used to do a lot of flights on the Dash8 back in FlyBe days (mainly between Glasgow and Belfast City) and always loved that rev of the props. The weather departing on my return leg was a bit clearer as we left Campbeltown, but sadly worse at Glasgow when we got back - but hoping to get out to Barra at some point in the summer!

great video mate pity about the weather but looked nice on approach and in Campbeltown itself. It’s been nearly 30 years since visited there for a wedding, remembering only coming back to Glasgow more scottish with a hangover and little memory 🤣🤣🤣

Last time I was over there was probably a similar length of time - about 30ish years ago - and that was a drive each way. Was for work stuff, so didn't get to stop and sample the local delights!

Sadly it's years since I've seen the main terminal check-in hall at Glasgow Airport busy. The St Andrews building is usually busy for Jet2 flights but in the main hall there are almost always more empty desks than staffed desks... really sad to see compared to 20 years ago. Nice flight to Campbeltown on the Twin Otter, shame about the weather as it would be a stunning flight over Argyll and Bute on a clear day. I've never flown on the Twin Otter myself but I really need to experience a beach landing on Barra sometime soon.

To be fair - I've seen check-in a lot busier at times - but it was REALLY quiet that morning. It is sad to see Glasgow a shadow of itself, though. I've commented on this before, but I miss the days when there were multiple direct long-haul scheduled flights to the US. Feels like now it's all short-haul, with a few charter long hauls with TUI and the Emirates scheduled flights to Dubai. As for the weather - it's Scotland - we have to take what we're given, but I'm hoping if I manage to do the Barra flight, it will be in a bit more sunshine!

Super video. Thank you for going to all the effort and sharing. What do people normally go to Campbeltown for? Obviously not a Scot so sorry!

Thanks - glad you enjoyed! It's a coastal town that grew out of a fishing village - lovely part of the country and popular with tourists. Air service saves a 4 hour drive in each direction, so it's well used!

I have flown this route twice when it under Ba and Flybe colours. On both times we never made across and had to turn back due to weather and technical issues. I got my money back and saved me getting back from Campbeltown I suppose.

I was a bit worried when I made the return trip (video for that coming out in a couple of months), as we were advised the weather in Glasgow had got worse, and was close to their operating limit - and that if we had to divert, we'd be going to Prestwick. Given how bouncy the flight was - particularly approach and landing at CAL, I can only imagine how bad it must have been on your trips for them to turn back - as I think they are fairly robust aircraft and the pilots seemed to take it all in their stride. Despite having taken over 400 flights in my life, I'm still not the biggest fan of turbulence...
