A bumpy first flight on the Airbus A220 from Paris to Amsterdam - Trip Report
This was another flight with a couple of firsts for me. One was my first visit to an Air France lounge, but the other more significant one was that this was my first ever time flying onboard the Airbus A220 - and what an aircraft it is!
Leave me a comment below to let me know what you think the engines sound like to you - is it a Whale or a Wookie?!?
Come with me to see what I thought of the lounge, and the overall experience with Air France on this short flight from Paris to Amsterdam.

    I did the status match from BA Gold to ITA Executive. I have a return KLM economy booking GLA AMS GLA and had initially put my AF/KL Flying Blue number in which is now at the lowest tier (hardly use Skyteam anymore - like you I'm a OneWorld guy now) but should have been able to switch it to my new top tier ITA card on the KLM site. No dice! KLM won't let you. In fact flying blue was locked in and the frequent flyer area in my booking was greyed out. Fortunately, I was able to change it on the ITA site but am unsure if KLM will recognise this on the day as I read that flying blue numbers, once entered on KL or AF are 'sticky'. Was hoping for lounge access in GLA and AMS. Never mind if not - this is just a positioning flight on a QR/UL business class booking AMS to Jakarta - so I'll get all the good stuff with those OneWorld carriers. Also have a couple of domestic flights in Indonesia booked, one with the notorious Lion Air (Late Is Our Nature according to Indonesian frequent flyers haha) and Skyteam member, Garuda Indonesia which, as Matt from Matt's Planet discovered, don't even have an option to add ITA memberships to their bookings - Matt discovered this months ago and nothing's changed. Oh well ...

    Whilst I’m sure this is the shortest scheduled flight by distance, would Glasgow to either Belfast airports be a shorter timed flight? It’s typically around 25 minutes.

    • @GLAFly
      @GLAFly 13 днів тому

      @darylanderson2888 if you're only counting time in the air, then I guess it would be close - but that's most likely down to the speed the Twin Otter fly at. It's never going to compete over any distance with the likes of an A320 jet (EasyJet) - or even a turbo prop like the ATR72 (Aer Lingus) - or the Dash 8 that FlyBe used to operate. It's a much smaller and slower aircraft, so it probably would be close for that reason - hence it's easier (for me, at least) to go by distance. This was just calling it out as the shortest/quickest currently scheduled commercial flight between two points on the mainland (so excluding inter-island, like Westray to Papa Westray as well as Belfast).

      @darylanderson2888 sorry to hear that. I'm still not a fan of turbulence, even after over 440 flights in my life (so far), but I'm sure you already know how safe flying is - statistically. Not sure if its of interest, but I know EasyJet do a fear of flying course regionally - including from Glasgow and a fee other airports. Don't think it's cheap, but they have a an excellent rep and talk you through everything - on the ground before the flight - and give a fill running commentary throughout the flight. Check out www.fearlessflyer.easyjet.com if you want more info (not sponsored, sadly 😉). Also - always let the crew know when you get on (if you're ok doing that) - I've seen loads of flight attendants be really awesome with nervous flyers (regardless of airline), sonyouve nothing to lose. @darylanderson2888 sounds like you've got it covered from an info perspective! I hope it gets better for you, as it's so magical if you're able to enjoy it - but as someone who has a fear of heights (static - like tall buildings, bridges, etc, but oddly NOT when flying 🤔) I get that it doesn't matter whether it's rational or not! You'll always feel it less on bigger planes and when located as close to the centre of the wings as you can - good luck with your continued exposure!

    Looks like a great experience on board... I'm yet to experience the Airbus 220 but it seems like a spacious and comfortable cabin. Shame about the lack of attention to detail in the lounge... it's inexcusable for an airline to have empty food offerings in their flagship lounge at their home base in my opinion.

    • @GLAFly
      @GLAFly 20 днів тому

      @armychap007 I've always been a fan of the Embraers, but I think the A220 might have supplanted them at the top of my list. On the lounge - I agree it was a weak offering, but in trying to be fair to them (given this is one of - I beleive - 6 lounge they operate between 2E, F and G), it may be they do a better job in their long-haul/non-schengen terminal. I've always heard good things about the AF lounges and service on board - but that's tended to be wide body routes. Just an excuse to add that to my "must try" list 😁.

      Thanks - glad you enjoyed it! Yeah - it was a really nice lounge, but let down badly by the soft offering. As i commented, i'm not sure if it's been because it was busy at that time of day, but even comparing to the BA Galleries Club lounges at Heathrow, it was poor by comparison. Maybe this is the standard for their short-haul lounges?. I'm also not sure what the point of the screened off "restaurant" bit at the far end was - if this had originally been intended for more full service food offerings when the lounge was designed, and just ended up being scaled back, but it was a weird section. Would love to try their long-haul lounges for comparison as I'd hope they were much better.

    Air France definitely get a "oui" and a "très bien" from me. I've always found them to be excellent and their economy longhaul service was great in my opinion. It's an airline which has never managed to make flights to Glasgow work, which is really sad in my opinion, as they are great onboard and offer additional connectivity to Scots travellers via CDG.

    • @GLAFly
      @GLAFly Місяць тому

      @armychap007 I have to say that, despite the somewhat less than generous legroom, it was a perfectly pleasant flight - with a very friendly crew. Have heard good things about their long haul product (especially La Premiere) which I hope to try at some point - but agree with you that it's a shame they can't make Glasgow work - especially considering KLM and even Lufthansa have services there. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

    When it comes to flying, my favorite trips are those which are about an hour in length. That's just long enough to enjoy the view, have a drink and land. The only European airports I have visited are LHR, CDG and FCO. I don't have much of a reference to compare your experience on this flight to others. Here in the USA where I live, I have flown hundreds of times since the 1970s. Your experience on Air France, looked very average, or "normal" to me. Not bad, but the leg room could have been better. I think all carriers, whether European or American like to use densely packed aircraft on their high traffic routes. I'm a fan of the slimline seats with the really small tray tables. They seem to give an extra inch or two of legroom which is enough to make a difference on short haul. I think if Air France wants to maximize seats, they should switch over to the newer, slimmer seats.

    • @GLAFly
      @GLAFly Місяць тому

      @davidcole333 Thanks David - hope you enjoyed! I think all European carriers suffer from the need to keep the cabin flexible (to adjust the number of business or economy seats near the front) and hence suffer from the lack of larger seats that are the norm in the US. Conversely, I tend to find the service is much better in Europe (especially in business on shorter journeys) but the max-stacking of seats isn't fun for anyone, and some carriers take it too far. KLM work around a little by having more legroom in the first 8 - 12 rows - which they either sell as business or economy comfort - makes a big difference.

    KLM are a great European airline with a fantastic network and hub at Amsterdam. Like all European legacy carriers they have cut back on their inflight service but the complimentary snack and free messaging package are definitely a bonus. In my opinion the Lomond lounge at GLA is a dire offering so I don't think you missed out on anything by skipping the lounge visit. Your trip reviews are so well done. I wish your channel long term success and growth. In the past week I have flown on A320neo and 737-800. There is a noticeable difference in the width of the cabins, with the A320 providing a small amount more room at the shoulder, enough to make a noticeable difference in comfort. I flew on AA's "main cabin extra" which is their extra legroom seat on a Boeing 737-800. While the legroom allowed me to stretch my legs completely, the narrowness of the cabin made the seat feel extremely condensed and narrow. I then flew on Frontier Airlines A320neo standard economy. While the legroom was adequate, the small amount of extra width per seat was enough to make the trip more comfortable than what I experienced on AA's main cabin extra. I have never had opportunity to fly any European carriers, so I can only relate what my experience is here in the states. I think in the future I will look for A320 flights wherever possible and avoid the 737.
