Twin Otter day trip to Campbeltown featuring a hunt for a famous painting in the unlikeliest place!

- The 3rd of December 2021 may not seem like the best day to go day-tripping, but I jump on a Loganair Twin Otter for a flight of 50 nautical miles from Glasgow across to Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula of Scotland (my first time there!), on a flight with just one fellow passenger.
As interesting a wee town as Campbeltown was, I decide to keep walking and end up on Davaar Island hunting for a very famous painting of the crucifixion, but will I find it un one of the many sea caves there and still get out in time to fly back home? There's only one way to find out...
Flight details:
03 Dec 21 GLA CAL 0800 0845 LM443 Seat 2C
03 Dec 21 CAL GLA 1735 1815 LM448 Seat 2A
Return ticket price: GBP87.00 inc seat reservations
NOTE: Sorry, I forgot to put a map on this video - forgive me!

Fun Fact: Campbeltown has one of the longest runways in the UK at 3km. Was an emergency backup landing spot for the Space Shuttle.
Was also a runway for USAF, concord trials, and a storage and distribution centre for US seals nuclear mines. You can see the storage units if yours sitting on the left and landing from the sea.
Even though the painting was the focus in the video, I still found the scenery and the views from the plane so interesting.
Thanks Doris, the whole day was great fun even though the dark clouds followed me for most of it!
That plane is incredible and does amazing things for Scottish tourism. Beautiful twin otter.
I flew Glasgow-Campbeltown-Glasgow in 1982 when visiting the military marine storage & loading terminal, built into the cliff face, for a pre-tender survey for modification works. The plane was a Britten-Norman Trislander, yes the one with 2 engines on the wing and a third engine stuck on top of the tail. 3 things I remember to this day. 1) The pilot turning around in his seat and shaking hands and then redistributing the passengers in different seats to get a better weight balance, which I understood as in an earlier career I was an Aeronautical Weight Control Engineer and Loadmaster. 2) The main, 3 km long, runway was shut for maintenance. No problem we landed on the taxiway, and used very little of that. 3) There was a taxi available at the airport which took me to the terminal and back again to the airport. I had taken my suitcase with me in case the survey took time and I had to stay overnight but we did the walkaround and I asked my questions in plenty of time to catch the evening flight back to Glasgow. I think the terminal building was a wooden shack then.
Wow! Again! I love seeing the take offs and landings in these great little work horse planes. Thanks for braving the wind, rain, and tides to hike across the causeway to see a painting in a cave at the end of the world. I've walked low tide causeways in California and Great Lakes to see lighthouses but your journey was fabulous...so long and dramatic. Thanks again for taking us to everyday places that are in actuality spectacular. Makes me take a closer look at what is around me here in Colorado! Just need to stay alert and keep walking 😊
A great video Steve. We are so lucky to have Loganair as our wee flag carrier! It was blawin' a hoolie when I was there as well. :-)
Cheers Scott! Have a great Christmas and looking forward to your next upload! Maybe a colab can be arranged sometime!!!! Aw the best!
You had me ROTFL at the segment of the sheep all running away from your singing!
went to Davaar in 1971 when I was 15 with my mum, who was born in Campbeltown. Flew across in 1999 on a Twin Otter, although your one looks a lot more modern....we were bussed back as the weather was too inclement to fly....
You are a much braver person than I! Thanks for taking us there and being willing to go the extra mile for another spectacular video!
Gotta love the Twotter. A great little puddle-jumper.
Haha love it! :)
Nothing like the sound of those twin turboprops spooling up
Devon you're so right! I was gutted I didn't get that flight all to myself though :D
Fascinating 😮. Quite a trek and planning. Thanks for the footage ❤
Thank you for another enjoyable wee trip. Watching these videos really feels like I’m going along for the journey. As I have said before, I can’t go to these places because of disability. So for me journeys like these opens up my world.
Cheers Robert! Merry Christmas :)
That's a lot of walking from airport to Davarr island with time to get back to airport would stress me out! I did a summer time sail on Waverley to Campbeltown years ago and flew back to Glasgow the same day . Haven't had time to see painting.
Can't wait to get onboard the Waverley Jim! Next year for sure, not been on her decks since I was too young to remember!
You take us to some fabulous places away from the usual tourist trail - many thanks-I enjoy your content so much
Steve don’t give yourself a hard time…great Vlog…I really enjoyed it…thanks
Cheers Kevin! Much appreciated :)
What a stunningly beautiful place to visit.Thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas :)
Wow ! Never heard of this before . What an amazing journey to get there to see it . Thankyou for taking us along with you Steve . I have driven right round to campbeltown its a fab drive . I enjoyed the flight more . 😊
Nice, the things you kearn here, great fun.
Weather is always a theme though and it was very recognisable 🤣🤣🤣🤣🏴🇳🇱👍
Cheers Michael! :)
That was a wonderful short trip In my favourite Twin Otter light aircraft, and the surprise at the end of the lonely walk to Campbeltown was amazing, a beautiful little town indeed, Interesting story about the cave painting of the ‘Crucifix’ but the walkway had me very worried, as you know sea water and I don’t mix, you are a brave Man Steve, you would never find me in any sort of cave either, no matter how beautiful, it did have a bit of an eerie atmosphere I thought, but it had wonderful colours and rock formations, as you say quite unique, you always manage to find places of interest Steve thank you 🙏 for another one”👌”
Thanks Bernice :) I think I sometimes push my bravery a bit just to get the shot I want/need :D Have a wonderful Christmas!
@@steve-marsh that’s called dedication, you always do go that extra mile for our enjoyment, Merry Christmas to you and Alicja also, 🤗
Hi Steve hope your well ..Great wee vid plane was pretty kool but looks very tight lucky there was only two ppl...and landing footage prty neat..take care buddy and can't wait for ur next vid
Cheers mate! Merry Christmas!
@@steve-marsh merry Xmas to u and ur family
Amazing Steve about the old town and the painting of Jesus in a cave never heard of it !
Love finding these little gems :)
Great video as ever Steve. Thank you.
Cheers John - Merry Christmas!
Interesting seeing the cave and painting. Thanks for the walking tour enjoyed it.
Thanks so much for watching :) Aw the best!
lol! Steve the days are so short as for the sheep you are trying to pull the wool over our eyes...
Ohhh that's a beauty Paul :D
Yet another surprising journey. loved it.
Cheers mate!
Steve Thanks for another great video brings back memories of Davaar as stayed there some time ago in one of the old Lighthouse keepers cottages.
Sounds fantastic! My kinda holiday! Cheers :)
Damn...just as I was about to put down my phone and a vid from Steve pops up as a notification. Oh go on then I will watch 😁. Great trip, very worth the effort to see that cave picture too.
Cheers mate! Haha my timing was perfect :)
Another cracking video Steve - you should ask Santa to bring you one of those folding bikes that fit in a bag - I have a friend who takes one with him in his wee plane - you would get around more. Anyway thanks for all you do - wishing you a wonderful Christmas
Thanks so much Colin! Merry Christmas, and I'll be looking out for that bike in the morning :) What a great idea!!!
Cant thank you enough for your time and work. Leaves such a good feeling in the heart after watching each one. x
Thank you SO much Jo!!!!! Really appreciate it, I get the same feeling reading your comment!
Great seeing another video from you. I hope you are ready for Christmas and have some great plans. All the best....from Orlando FL. Temp today is mid eighties....Brrrrr!
Haha you know how jealous that makes me! All the best in wonderful FL - what I'd do to be there right now!!!!
Great video. I was in Campbeltown in August but unfortunately the tide made it impossible to visit Davaar Island. I would love to go back one day. Tfs
Cheers Lorna! Aye, I wondered if I'd make it across too!
Always great to see a Twin Otter ... a Canadian icon. Now those pesky Canada Geese ... not so much!
Haha Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the wee film, great picture quality and loved the bit on the Twin Otter. Best regards from Belfast.
Cheers Joseph! Merry Christmas!
Love your travelogues Steve. Great to visit favourite places with a jovial guide ! 🙂
You are too kind :)
Thanks for this one Steve. An absolute joy. best wishes to you. and Alicja. See you on the next one.
Cheers Derek! And aw the best to you too! I can't wait to get Alicja back on the screen! :)
I'm not sure if the sheep running away in such a remote area necessarily is down to bad singing. Reportedly the sight of blokes might be enough to make them run.
Coat. Yes.
More stunningly beautiful pictures of Scotland! A beautiful video! 🤗
Haha you've made a good point :D
I love the win Otter - they always look so eager to fly, and Logan Air uses them to fly to some really superb little places :-)
So true Rob! And I think the pilots enjoy them as much as me!
Another great video well done Steve
Cheers Jim! Merry Christmas!
Used to work in Tarbert not so far from Campbeltown back in 2017 never even knew Davaar existed, everyday is a school day. I tried to do this flight once just to say I’d done it, only for the day I tried too, the flight was cancelled and was plonked on a bus for 4 hours instead😂 Thanks for another brilliant video Steve.
Fun fact about Campbeltown Airport. It was certified to be used as an emergency runway for the Space Shuttle wouldn’t think that looking at it now🤔
Superb info, cheers! And wow, I don't fancy the bus trip! I got lucky.
A bit of a wintry day out but I dont mind that, not compared to a few winters Ive spent in Canada or northern Norway! I'm always a bit worried when I see you tramping about in what look like trainers but I guess they're "walking" ones….. I'm very much old school and on even moderate hikes I wear walking boots! (these are well waxed and nice and comfy) thanks for taking us on these travels, it always gives me itchy feet….
Yeah, they're proper walking shoes, but a good boot is always better for ankle protection it's true! Canadian and Norwegian winters - pretty to look at but I can't even imagine a whole season of it!
@@steve-marsh hmmm the Canadian winter was the hardest, you had to be all masked up, if you had your nose exposed you would get frost bite! Luckily I'm ok with the cold but that was REALLY freezing…. I dont go to Canada in the winter anymore!
another great video Steve ,,, thanks ,,
Thanks so much :)
Amazing island and causeway, now if the tide had come in you might have been glad of the cave! Surprised it survives with the tide coming in ad out over it!
I might just stay in one of those caves forever :) Merry Christmas Bob!
Awesome as usual Steve. Yer a brave man crossing to Davaar Isle at this time of year and a return plane to catch lol. Love it.
I was stressing more than you know! Merry Christmas :)
Love those Twin Otters - with the throttle handles up above the pilots head! 😀 Very interesting trip to somewhere I know nothing about so learned a lot.
Have a great Christmas Roger and family!
Another Extremely great video, so many thanks for taking the time to make the video, take care & keep safe.
What a great December day out. I've been wondering about Campbeltown and now I know. Thanks for the video
Cheers Michael!
Wow Steve, how do you discover these gems. To be honest I have never heard about that painting, imagine the face of the first person who saw it after the artist painted it. Look forward to the next video.
Hope you and Alicijia have a happy Xmas and peaceful and healthy new year.
And you too Bob! I know right? And I wonder if there are other yet undiscovered paintings elsewhere!
There a project for you mate😂
Steve, you could have created your own artwork in the other cave & become a historic legend in your own right 🤔😉
Another cracking video Steve keep them coming have a good Christmas
You too Robbie! Aw the best :)
Another min-gem...thank you.
Planes aren't scary but the sea is a whole different matter.
I had visions this time of you becoming stranded...or heaven forbid, being washed away.
This is a certifiable PG vlog !
But my goodness you must walk hundreds of miles a year and get through piles of shoes.
For my part I count, simply watching one of your films, as an additional 1000 steps in my daily count...exhausting.
You are doing a good job for a healthy exercise lifestyle. That is, if we discount the risks of pneumonia and exposure and drowning!
Overall it certainly seems it is about time you got yourself a shoe sponsor 😃 !
Best wishes to thee and thine for Christmas and beyond.
Loads of wishes for a successful 2022.
ML
Haha a shoe sponsor would be wonderful! :D Thanks so much for the kind comments and aw the best to you! :)
I did laugh when all the sheep started running away from your singing. There's always a critic in the area, lol. I was a tad concerned that you were going to get trapped on the island until the next low tide, but, you knew what you were doing.
Thanks for another great video! The plane is as big as a minibus! In Norway, Widerø flies these minibuses with wings! Almost like the plane should have been equipped with a parachute and stop button! Stylish jesus picture in the cave! Wishing you a great Wednesday! Stay Safe!
Thanks you too! Oh I've always fancied one of those Widerø passes where you can hop on and off as many flights as you want right up the coast! That would be wonderful!
Having lived in Campbeltown I've done this flight a few time, then back in the 1970's when it used to go on to Islay too. The "funniest" experience I've had was when the flight took twice as long and the pilots had to get out the map to find a location through a break in the clouds :) Great video - ty.
Thanks Steve, really enjoyed this. Campbeltown looks so lovely x
Thanks Judy! Merry Christmas!
What a smooth landing! Ten points to Loganair.
Another fantastic video Steve. I'm getting worried about new habit of walking along slippery rocks. Alicja, put a lead on him! :D x
Haha I'm ready for a getting a row when Alicja gets back from work and watches the video :D Cheers Duncan, aw the best!
@@steve-marsh hope she's having a fabulous time! X
Worked in Campbeltown as a young 20 year old in 1967,was there for 6 weeks, but then we drove there,At the time paul Mccartney had a place nearby,Am now 75 and this brought back some good and bad memories,Not changed much at all,I have changed quiet a bit.Love your wee videos Steve.
Cheers John, thanks for coming on a trip down memory lane!
I always think of Campbeltown (Loch!?)and link it with an Andy Stewart (Scottish kilted singer) new year kind of song. Thanks, I now see it not only as a place worth seeing but a place worth going to see. The cave did seem a little spooky. The walk to it was surely worth it though. Extraordinary seeing such a holy depiction in such an isolated spot. Thank you for sharing.
Totally agree Thomas! Thanks for coming along :)
That was an interesting film that brought back many memories of living and working in Campbeltown nearly 20 years ago. There were a few changes I noticed but in the main it has not changed. I have walked out over the causeway and viewed the painting as well. I regularly flew up to Glasgow for meetings and if you had a hospital appointment in Glasgow you got a free return flight.
Nice one, glad to show you some very familiar places :) Merry Christmas
An adventure and a half! Hilarious. You should take Rollerblades with you to gain time along the lanes, stop off for a cuppa /wee dram on the way through. Hope you're well and have a good Christmas you and Alicia.
Haha you don't want to see me on blades :D Merry Christmas from us both x
Once again an entertaining and relaxing video - really appreciate your hard work over the year - keeps me sane ! Excellent as always !
Cheers John, can't believe that's another year gone, need to get planning for 2022 already! Aw the best to you :)
Lovely journey you had there so glad to come along, stay safe, cheers.
Cheers Simon! You too :)
You know, I'm starting to think (with respect and affection) that you're a bit of a madman....certainly braver than most.
Haha I’ll take that compliment Yvonne :D
I always enjoy watching the videos of your travels. It reminds me of how beautiful our home country of Scotland is.You show us some great locations. Thanks again.
Cheers Alasdair! Merry Christmas!
Yes it's a lovely place Steve, remember it well 20yrs ago hubby got speeding ticket for doing 44 in a 40 zone going out of Tarbet🤣. Well done on another awesome vlog.Merry Christmas to you and alicjia when it comes, thanks again.💞
Haha still fresh in the memory :) Thanks so much Margaret and Merry Christmas to you too!
Thank you Steve, I really enjoy your jaunts. Happy Christmas from down on the south coast uk. Love Scotland 💓
Merry Christmas to you, thanks so much x
Since the video had Jesus on the Cross I hope you have a blessed Christmas Steve, thanks for the videos!
And you too! Merry Christmas :)
Fantastic video Steve - I had no idea about this hidden treasure.
Steve that was AMAZING thank you...
I wish these videos were longer! All the best for Christmas!
Merry Christmas :)
Another top video Steve 😀
Cheers Steven! Aw the best!
You continue to amaze us with these incredible short adventures!!!!!
Thanks so much! Merry Christmas
loved great video steve thankyou really enjoy all detail you input .great thanks
Thanks so much Andrew!
Loved your video, I was stationed at RAF Machrihanish in 1984-85 , 1st flight ever was to Glasgow in a twin otter in a howling gale. Went back to Mac/Campbeltown in 2005.. over 20 years later and walked the causeway to see the painting, I still have friends in the wee roon to this day 37 years later. What a great reminiscent video for me .
Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas!
Gosh that made me nervous for you, will he make it back or get stranded I kept thinking! But it was so worth it! So eerie in the cave but it was perfectly placed in there. Wonderful thanks! 🙏
Thanks for bringing us on that beautiful island .happy Christmas .🎅🎅🎅🎅💗
And to you Sean! Cheers!
Wonderful video Steve....Apart form the singing... But you gave it a go.... You could phone ahead for a Taxi to meet you.... But that would mean spending more of your hard earned money 😲.... Take care and I hope you both have a great Xmas.... :-)))
You too!!! (and would you believe I got a taxi back to the airport?) ;)
@@steve-marsh It makes sense when your on a tight schedule..... :-))))
another great video that brings back memories ,as i was stationed at machrihanish for a few months , and paul mc,cartney sadly does not return to his high park farm that he shared with the lovely linda ,,but the good people of cambletown ,erected a statue in her memory ,,,
Aye, I think its a painful place for him to return to now. Thanks Eddie, Merry Christmas to you!
Thank you so much for taking us along, Steve. What a fabby trip.
Cheers! Merry Christmas :)
@@steve-marsh And to you and Alicja. Here's to more great videos in 2022. Do get to Lismore at some point if you can. Stay safe.
Another goodie 👍Thank you for great content this year and best wishes to both for a great Christmas 🤗
Can't believe that's another year! Thanks for sticking by the channel and aw the best!
Well done again Steve, your video,s are well entertaining. You take me to places I will probably never see in person. You and Alicia have a great Christmas and a Guid New Year. Long may yer lum reek.
You too Tom, cannae believe that's another year gone, but thanks for sticking by the channel, aw the best!
Great content and a must for any tourists visiting Scotland.....
Thanks so much mate! :)
Hi Steve, as usual you never dissapoint, I spent a week there one day lol, great information and your way to connect. Have a fantastic Xmas and New Year, hope this translates. Pory roku pozdrowienia Szczesliwego Nowego Roku. For Alicja
Brian thank you! And I'll need to check your sentence when Alicja gets back from work! Aw the best
That looked a pretty good, if slightly damp day out. It's worth noting that whilst Campbeltown is only 50nm from Glasgow, the only alternate public transport link is a bus from Buchanan St bus station which takes four hours as Kintyre is a rather amusingly shaped peninsula and to drive it you have to head quite a long way northwest before heading even further south. I did it once nearly three years ago, bus there, Twin Otter back.
That sounds like the best way to do it and get the flight and the scenery - I think Paul Lucas did that exact same trip! Cheers, aw the best :)
@@steve-marsh yes, he did though he stayed the night in Campbeltown, I did it in the day. I’m not a fan of buses but it definitely is a scenic journey.
Nice one Steve! Apparently Paul McCartney was the only civilian allowed to fly his jet into that RAF base back in the day when he lived there.Yet another bucket list destination for me!!
Nice info! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
I honestly love these videos. I live through your exploration for now. In a few years I retire then I'm going to spend the rest of my life exploring too...
Thanks so much Bruce! Many exciting adventures to come for both of us :)
@@steve-marsh can't wait
What an incredible adventure Steve! Gorgeous painting and sunset! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video Steve. It's always good to see a Twin Otter flight. If I get to 'The Wee Toon", I think I'll be visiting the distilleries rather than the cave.
You know how to do it better than me Peter! Aw the best :)
Absolutely stunning so glad to see these marvelous vlogs, thanks Steve how wonderful the marbles of the world are, great video.
Thanks so much Jack! All the best for Christmas and the New Year!
Thanks so much Steve for taking us on another one of your breathless trips. Great timing with the tides! Love the Twin Otter, prolly one of the finest STOL aircraft. Looks like the pilots greased both landings. Keep ‘‘em coming man!
Cheers Norman! Merry Christmas!
I live in Campbeltown, & the flight is brilliant, I love it. Not been over to Davaar though, don’t fancy walking over the Dorlan
Thanks very much Steve, from me in Irvine !🤗🤗

Yet another excellent video steve. The wee ferry from ballycastle to campeltown is back on this summer, so hopefully will follow your footsteps to this island!
Funny you say that James, I was researching it :) Merry Christmas!
Most enjoyable the video. Thank you and your feet for the hard work making this for us. Hope you and Alicja have a great Christmas and a spectacular New Year. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
Awww and the same to you Kate! Aw the best from across the Ocean! Here's hoping we can get to the States next year, miss it so much!
How you think up these day trips amazes me! That was fascinating & you made me laugh with the sheep! Another joy to watch, thank you Steve.
Oh I remember now :D haha cheers!
Another great video Steve. Thanks for sharing. I’ve driven down the Mull of Kintyre heading to the Arran ferry. Must take time to visit that island in future.
I'd like to do the ferry trips too Liz :)
Your some man Steve ! I enjoyed that wee trip, you take us to some remote, well to me they are , places, that was some painting , good to see.
