STEVE THE STUD! It freakin worked! I had doubts, not because of you, but because of my minimal skills! I ran out to the Home Depot, got what I needed, and got the job done! Even my wife is stoked! Everyone, don't leave out the puller--it is 100% necessary. The HD guy told me I'd be wasting my time and I'd be right back at the store to get it later. Thanks Steve!
Thanks again for the video. I called Moen Canada and they are sending me the replacement valve for free. They have free replacement warranty for their products. I didn't know that and was pleasantly surprised that they have that policy. Will wait for the part and fix my shower in the guest bathroom. Cheers
Very good video, glad you made it. My plumber changed my Moen guest shower cartridge yesterday; same situation as this. One thing I've learned -- use the shower once in a while.
That Lady's plumbing down in the basement is a Plumbers wet dream lol. God they did a good job installing that manifold and running all that copper pipe. I had a good friend who died last year that was a Master Plumber who I learned a lot from that invented a puller for dam near all brands of cartridges and just before he got a Patent on it he passed away. His son has took over his business and his own business and is the best plumber in this town and is so damn busy he never has to advertise and works around the clock commercial and residential and is the highest paid plumber in town. Thank god I know his son we are good friends because his dad and I were great buddies and worked together back in the day.
I enjoyed the video, One time i tried to replace a lavatory Moen cartridge and used a puller and it was so tight that the puller just pulled the center steam out and left the outer shell of the cartridge in the faucet. I ended up replacing the whole faucet.
Thanks Steve, same situation. Guest bath, rarely used. Moen cartridge was very stubborn. I may have given up if not for your video. I got a puller and eventually got it out. It took a lot of pulling, but I got it. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
good video. I am by no means a plumber but I do as much myself as I can. I have a decent understanding of fixing things being that I worked on hvac for so long. just wanted to say thanks. this helped me fix my guest shower in the house I just bought.
I'm a 1st year hvac service tech and I like watching your videos, glad to see you have some plumbing too, it helps a lot when I'm at home for a little refresher
Thanks for the video. I have the same problem. I bought a condo and the second bathroom hasn't been used. Had no hot water even though hot water supply was good. Was driving me crazy. Thanks again.
Saved me a ton of money. Easy fix when I found out how here. Managed to get a Danco replacement part from Lowes. $34.99 (Moen was $39.99 and none in stock.) Many thanks for posting this.
I had one that started to leak. Moen sent me the replacement cartridge free since it was a lifetime warranty. However the cartridge was stuck so tight (worse than what you show in the video) that when I tried to pull it out the brass shaft snapped off. I wound up replacing the whole valve. I was lucky because I was the one who put the valve in and had put in a access door with shutoff valves in the back of the closet so everything was easy to get to. It took about 30 minutes to replace everything.
The small white part that comes with the cartridge is meant to use as the puller. Instead of using it to push the cartridge into place, it works perfectly to loosen enough so it can be pulled out with pliers. The small white nut causes the cartridge to spin when held and used with pliers, and the white plastic part that is labeled TOP prys itself away from the brass body. I will admit I read the instructions that came with the 1222b. Which by the way is covered by Moen under warranty if you place service call at no charge.
I just replaced mine today in the main bathroom and it was equally difficult to remove, even with a puller. I remember a day or two last year when I had no hot water but then it started working again. Now I just had a leaky valve. Turns out, the rubber gaskets on the side of the old cartridge came loose and folded over inside the opening of thebrass valve housing. I actually had to remove torn pieces of the gasket from the housing after I got the cartridge out. I didn't see it in the video, but I would guess you may have seen the same problem. It looks like the hot gasket at least came loose when you had it out.
My kid's shower is the exact opposite, only hot and scalding water. I replaced it once. I think it was installed inverted or backwards. The know is always pointing up when it is off unlike the other 3 shower knobs facing down.
Thank you so much for this and other videos like it! I managed to change our moen posi temp cartridge because of this! There wasn’t any hot water, low water pressure on the hot side or would even completely turn off at the 9 o’clock position. However, I wonder if you can help me figure out why after replacing the cartridge successfully and getting back hot water and great pressure, why am I now getting a dripping faucet? I even can see a drip in the hot water side in the place where the cartridge goes, EVEN if the water supply is turned off! It was off for 30 minutes so it’s not just a trickle from the line. I’m happy with the hot water for sure! I just wish I could get it to stop that constant drip and occasional trickle. Thank you very much in advance for any advice or direction to other videos that would help me. I’m very grateful!
I took a short video of the drip within the pipe where the cartridge goes but I can’t figure out yet how to post it here to show you what I was trying to describe. 😬
Thank you for taking the time to video and explain this. I can't believe that posi valve part was $40 at lowes! Thanks again for the tutorial. Best one on UA-cam.
Steven, you're giving up all your trade secrets. Replaced the valve with a puller. My shelter dog was dancing after the replacement, however I had difficulty with the Yankee accent.
Kudos to your skills: You extracted that balky valve without fracturing any of the copperwork behind it....like some of us might have done....! With that many circuits, that place must be some of B &B....?
Thank you so much for posting. I have no water coming out of my guest shower and think it might be the cartridge now too? I'll change that and see if that does the trick? Great video!
Yeah, she really had to yank on mine too, but I slid it back in there and she was all set and I got some pretty good shots on that one too, was definitely a good flow She asked me why I was wearing gloves, but I couldn't figure it out
6:00 I had previously repaired my shower, and the way I removed the shower cartridge is by heating the area with a blow dryer for about 20 to 30 minutes, which cause the inside rubber to soften up and was able to pull the cartridge out with a plier. I also pre-soaked the inside with WD40.
Thank you very much!!! I have a 5 bath house and I've lived here for ten years. We had family from out of town that finally tried out our never used shower! The same exact thing happened to me. I've never seen that happen before. Is I just a Moen issue? Thank you very much for making this very helpful vid! ...YO!
+steven lavimoniere I'm uploading a vid that I made watching your vid as I was fighting the same Moen cartridge and cursing Moen all the way!!! I'll let you know when it's up. ...YO!
Any idea what causes these cartridge to go bad? I've replaced several bathrooms cartridges a few times already. And the home is only 3 years old. I do have a water softener...
Thank you for showing a layman how is done ,you did a great job:)!I notice that a pulley is required so the job can be su refill .Thank by the way I subscribe:)
make sure the handle has been attached in the center setting..I had the same problem with a shower..I had the setting on cold and tightened it up this wouldn't allow it to go all the way over to hot...hope it helps
Hi Steve. I have a Kohler Single lever shower faucet with low pressure on the hot side. When you turn it all the way to hot the pressure drop off,if I back off about 1/4 inch it picks back up to normal. Can you tell what's happening here? Thanks Walt
at 7:00 I was waiting for it to break loose and spray water everywhere! I don't have your special "pulling tool", any suggestions if it sticks like this and you don't have the special tool?
After watching your video I went to LOWES and got everything I needed, including the puller tool and got the job done in about 20 minutes. THANKS for posting this video!
Good video, very informative. I need some advice please. I have a similar shower valve by Delta which drips. The set screw which holds the handle on is corroded and rounded out and I'm unable to remove it. What would you recommend to get that handle off so I can replace the seats. Thanks again Rich
Hey Steve, great video. Followed your directions. I put a new cartridge in and it put out great hot water for about 3 days, after that, I'm back just like I never replaced it. Water is like room temperature, even on full hot. Pressure is great at all settings. I get a nice shower for about 1-3 minutes, and after that nothing. I have a tankless water heater, and have hot water at every faucet, just a tepid shower. Any ideas?
I installed the same valve in my own bathroom when I redid it about 8 years ago. They balance the water temp out nice, but I'm not looking forward to ever swapping out that cartridge after seeing this. Lol. - Jack
The Moen replacement cartridge comes with a little white tool to slip over the old cartridge and work it back and forth to break the suction so it can then be pulled out more easily and not need the puller tool.
The first thing you should do prior to removing a positemp valve but after turning off the main water is opening the nearest water faucet which is usually the bathroom sink. By opening the water faucet valve it will allow air to be pulled into the water line as you pull the cartridge out preventing you from having to struggle against removing an old worn out cartridge but more importantly is you're not fighting against the normal vacuum seal. When you combine a worn non lubricated shower cartridge with the added vacuum seal that is created when you turn off your water, then you are guaranteed to have hard time pulling that cartridge out. By opening the water faucet valve from your bathroom sink you eliminate the vacuum suction that makes it so difficult to remove the cartridge. Hope this helps someone.
I am having a problem with the hot water in my shower also. I replaced the cartridge and still very little hot water. I then removed the cartridge and turned the hot water side back on and it just barely comes out. Could the whole valve assembly be bad or is it something more substantial? Any help would bw great.
***** sounds like you might have a blockage in the hot water pipe remove the cartage and turn the hot on and off quick maybe there is debree in valve that will blow out . i have seen electrolises build up in pipes and valves before maybe the shut off to water heater is bad loose washer .ect
I have a problem that iv been working on with my shower... I have a single valve like the one in this video but older... I have very little hot water coming out but in the bathroom sink I have a massive amount of hot.. same in kitchen.. I have replace all seals on the valve and the hot side "seal on spring" always rips immediately after replacing. every thing is smooth no way for it to rip. its like the water pressure rips it.. now this shower is so old that I cant get the hardware to replace the valve. I can only get the seals.. i don't want to put in a new system cause I'm going to be tearing this house down and rebuilding new in the next year.. any quick fixes or suggestions that may lead to long term fix...
+bigrigtrucker a ya hit it with a sledge and replace it lol its hard to say whats wrong over a email call a local plumber to find the problem good advice there
Ive just moved in and have an off brand, but can I assume the insides of mine are relatively the same? Would there be a generic form to purchase or could a MOEN replacement cartridge go in there?
Question: Does this also fix the issue of not having COLD water to MOEN shower as well? Hope someone can reply here would really appreciate it. Hot water all the time especially in the summer kind of SUCKS.
Hi Steven. This puller you have - is it good only for new style posi-temp thick moen cartridge? Can you use it on old style thin moen shower cartridge? Thanks.
I have an issue where all the other faucets and showers have normal hot water but my master shower loses hot water in less than 5 minutes. Is this a proper solution as well ?
I have the same shower handle and find that the allen screw continue,s to unwind, ( the allen screw that is used to hold the handle on ). Do you have any tips on how to stop the screw from unwinding?? Are other Moen handles interchangeable with this type of shower handle? Thanks good video.
I did this exact job two months ago to help a friend out that wasn't getting hot water out of his posi temp, now he has a steady drip coming out of the tub spout. Any ideas what would cause this to happen after only two months. And yes I greased the cartridge and cleaned out the body before installation
This "sounds" like a problem I have. Except the shower is used daily. Does different amount of use mean it's a different problem? I'm planning on taking the shower apart one day right after hubby leaves for work. Then I have a solid 6 hours to fix whatever I break, ha!
Again another convoluted design by Moen! I had trouble with mine as well. They put the set screw/allen head so close it is hard to unscrew with short hex/allen set, thanks Moen! BTW they put a little Locktite in there just to make it interesting! Keep trying whatever tool you can and try wiggling it off! Another joy of plumbing dealing with piss poor designs!
Blake Caldwell there are only 2 kind the old style smaller type and the new posi temp bigger style .. the new one is a lot bigger . you will need a special puller to get it out .
Nice video Steve. Don't know if you still check here but I have a question. How do you get the cart. out if the brass stem breaks off..I ended up chiseling the plastic part out with a screw driver. Is there an easier way?
IMPORTANT NOTE: The valve is incased in white plastic- with 1 black rubber part on each side (sometimes the rubber can block the water passage)! When removing the valve the front of the white plastic incasement CAN BREAK OFF and then you will have to fish out the rest of the plastic incasement ( it can be done- using a small screw driver and needle nose pliers). Make sure to use a flashlight to ensure all the plastic parts is removed from the waterway. Thank You!
The reason for the gloves is he didn't want grease on his hands, he might have to work for a living and work on other people's shit and do a good job , good video, as a maintenance tech, this was very informative and entertaining .
Great video. My husband tried to change ours but it was stuck. We called a plumber out and it broke apart. It took him all day to replace it and cost over $300.00. Ever since it was replaced the faucet has leaked. I thought that was a separate problem so we didn't call them back out. After looking at videos to fix a leaking faucet it looks like the same steps. Should they have been responsible for fixing the leak?
The one I am fighting with has the Model No. 111621 stamped into it. I plan on pulling it out to compare at one of the Big Box stores who probably won't carry it or simple stop into a plumbing supply I trust. Is it me or every time I deal with someone other than Delta, American Standard or Chicago Faucet, it is something like this? I mean I never see this in anything but these brands. Just because you don't use it for awhile the valve ceases up-come on!!
Follow up! I managed to pull the cartridge out with a Danco Puller which some where saying didn't work right. This one did vs the Moen model which was over $25 and I paid $13 or so at HD. Also I was extremely lucky it came out. The installer used a lubricant which I assumed was for nylon. If you do some research on UA-cam about these you will find some nightmare scenarios where you could end up destroying the body of the valve and causing a leak. I watched one were the guy fought with it for three hours! Drilling and Taping and Easy outs-F that!! Still don't understand why it will not deliver hot water? Stay tuned and I will give a progress report.
Hi Steve, had the same problem and replaced the cartridge. still luke warm water when on the hottest setting. If I completely shut the cold water off at the pipe, the water comes out hot and stays hot but as soon as the cold water valve is opened again, luke warm. :( Any suggestions???

Thank you for taking the time to video and explain this. I can't believe that posi valve part was $40 at lowes! Thanks again for the tutorial. Best one on UA-cam.
Found the schematic ... Thanks for taking time to show how it's done.
Steven, you're giving up all your trade secrets. Replaced the valve with a puller. My shelter dog was dancing after the replacement, however I had difficulty with the Yankee accent.
Thanks for your video. Everything worked out exactly the way you demonstrated.

Hi Steve.

I am getting low pressure on hot water, should I change the cartridge?
Question: Does this also fix the issue of not having COLD water to MOEN shower as well? Hope someone can reply here would really appreciate it. Hot water all the time especially in the summer kind of SUCKS.
Hi Steven. This puller you have - is it good only for new style posi-temp thick moen cartridge? Can you use it on old style thin moen shower cartridge?
Thanks.
Alex Moisseev i do not believe so i have a puller for the smaller cartridges there is another puller that does them all
how do you increase the hot water temprture to the shower?
Thx for the vid. I have the same problem. Where's your Swamper(the little dog). That was a disappointment(lol)
I have an issue where all the other faucets and showers have normal hot water but my master shower loses hot water in less than 5 minutes. Is this a proper solution as well ?
Excellent video! Thanks for the help.
David Prickett thanks for watching
I have the same shower handle and find that the allen screw continue,s to unwind, ( the allen screw that is used to hold the handle on ). Do you have any tips on how to stop the screw from unwinding?? Are other Moen handles interchangeable with this type of shower handle? Thanks good video.
+Fisherman Guy use some lock tight a small amout will work
thx
what would cause a bran new shower unit not too produce really hot water
That was a fancy moen puller u had there
Dunn Plumbing llc it works pretty good .i have different kind of pullers for moen 3 i believe
Does Kohler work the same way? Thanks.
+maine4me no there different
How do you remove the set screw if it is stripped?
I got it using a T15 torx driver and a lot of pressure. :)
Excellent. This is very helpful.
I have a moen shower that needs a new cartridge but how do i know what cartridge to use? its a turn shower knob
Thank You!
does that also fix all hot and no cold?
hi Steven. appreciate your video. Where did you get to puller. Looks like something that would be good to have
Dan Dowker i puller is key to get out a stuburn cartage
Any chance that this will fix water hammer?
+Zach Goldman no you have to reduce the water pressure to fix that problem or install air chambers ,best to reduce the incoming water pressure
Hi can a shower mixer works woot out hot water
Great video. Where'd that shower head come from?
Will this work if you have your shoes on?
The reason for the gloves is he didn't want grease on his hands, he might have to work for a living and work on other people's shit and do a good job , good video, as a maintenance tech, this was very informative and entertaining .
Good quick work !
thanks videos are great moen faucet repair
sarah perry thanks for watching
love doing this for a living. i live and breath plumbing. what was the issue the seal was shout so the water was crossing?
Watched & thought the same diagnosis... would cold water not supplied to valve cause the same problem?
+Same RepeatingPAGE you have to have a good flow of hot and cold for valve to operate properly any restriction will be a problem yes
Hi Steve, had the same problem and replaced the cartridge. still luke warm water when on the hottest setting. If I completely shut the cold water off at the pipe, the water comes out hot and stays hot but as soon as the cold water valve is opened again, luke warm. :( Any suggestions???
you have a blockage somewere its a pressure balance valve .
Is that the valve behind the faucet that connects all of the pipes together? And thank you soo much for responding!
