I have replaced several of these Moen cartridges over the past 20 years. NOT ONE of them has ever come apart as easily as shown here. I have always had to use a puller to get the cartridge out. They include a plastic device to help remove the cartridge with the kit but it's worthless. There is a puller for a Moen cartridge that you can buy from a plumbing supply which is what I have used. Fair disclosure: I am NOT a plumber just a DIYer.

Yeah they can be I little hard but not to hard maybe a bit more than the videos most of the times actually easier that’s it. This is the advantage of moen if the cartridge fails or gets damaged you can just replace it and if you have your old one you can just swap for new one

These videos are good, but very basic and don't take into consideration the real life experiences. Move into an older subdivision (20+ years old) and the plumbing fixtures are usually the cheapest made and are the most difficult to disassemble. These types of jobs are not a 1 hour fix. They usually require a few trips to the hardware store for special tools to remove parts or fixtures because corrosion, rust, time and improper installation all are factors.

Tell me about it! Helped a friend thinking it’s like mines but nope! Once open its old so required more and the more you attempt to fix the more you have to replace. 😂
So it’s never a repair when old home, it becomes a whole new replacement/ retrofitting.

I had a plumber do my other shower because it had the same issue but I think they replaced the whole copper housing and not just the cartridge. I have really hard water so lime and calcium have likely built up.

How often should we drain our water heater tank and replace the rod (that attracts the hard water deposits as shown in another video?

What were the symptoms that brought Richard to fix the valve? Was just the hot water flow diminished or were both hot and cold water flow diminished?

    • @physicskid
      @physicskid 5 років тому +1

I also had the exact same question. After re-watching and donning my glasses perhaps the main issue was that when the lever was shut off there is still water dripping out when it shouldn't? And then it leads to the idea that "oh shoot, there's water dripping when closed and that's bad" perhaps?
At this current time I have either the same (though not the gold colour, yuck!) or similar Moen Shower Faucet where I am worried because when I use the shower head and either I turn off the main faucet lever the shower redirect lever on the tub faucet does not automatically come down like my newer Moen faucet like it used to. I'm thinking it could be my cartridge since I'm guessing it has never been replaced since my condo home's initial construction from 2004. My Moen faucet also drips water for a little bit of time after using like the video's description. Oh well more research needs to be conducted for me! At least there is one solution to my issue, hopefully you don't have to replace your own Moen Cartridge too soon!

Any thoughts on this: 6 year old (so new-ish) shower only system. Valve and Moen cartridge as in the video. No tub spout connection as shower only, so this is plugged on the four way valve. New cartridge - check. Hot water coming in to valve - check. Cold water coming in to valve - check. Shower head checked for clog - check. Shower head connecting "pipe" that attaches to wall and shower head, disassembled and checked for clogs - check. Finally took wall off to expose plumbing. Disconnected pec pipe at top of four-way valve to check for visible blockage, etc. - check. I cannot however see whatever space is created in the valve when the handle is turned on (to initiate water supply), for the water to go UP. I have not played with a disconnected valve however and don't know how the water makes it's way up - only what I can see now I've yanked the pec pipe off and it just looks like metal down there with no spacing. So the last thing I have tried is to turn on the cold water supply again, a little, then turn the shower faucet inside the shower to the cold and on position and looked at the valve, remembering the pipe to lead to the shower head is disconnected. Nothing. I was hoping to be sprayed with water. So. Why do I have no water leaving this valve to travel up to the shower head??? Thank you for any suggestions. This is getting ridiculous lol!

But what were the symptoms. What was the original problem. Was the hot or cold water not working? Was I the water coming out of both the showers and the faucet? Or not coming out from one or the other. It seems the video shows a fix without showing what the original problem was.

Some advice please. The shower water flow starts off strong and then reduces to a trickle after about a minute. This is a recent development as it used to work fine. I removed the shower head and tested the water flow straight from the pipe and the same thing happens. Is this a cartridge problem or do you think it may be something else?

    Hi.
My wife and I have been having trouble with hot water in our apartment. We have hot water in our kitchen, but nothing but cold water coming out of our bathroom sink and our tub when we turn the hot water all the way on and leave the cold water off.
Our landlord refuses to hire a licensed plumber and either looks at it themselves or send a maintenance person (none of which are licensed plumbers) to look at it.
All they do is go to the boiler room in the building and look at the boiler.
They come back with: the pilot light was out and we relit it, there was condensation on he boiler so we put insulation on the pipes, no one else has complained about the hot water but you.
We never had a problem until this new management company took over.
All I know is we have now been without hot water for a week now and are getting the run around. If we were a week late with our rent, we would be out on the street.
We tried to hire a plumber ourselves; however, they won’t come out because we don’t own the property. Our landlord will not let us hire a plumber on our own, nor will they to resolve this problem.
Does anyone have an idea as to what is causing us to have no hot water in our bathroom ?
Unfortunately, we cannot afford to move somewhere else or we would.
    Thank you.

Hello there. I am a licensed plumber and hvac tech. It could be a couple things. First, if water comes out, but not hot, it could be a mixing issue. If the building has a mixing valve in mechanical room it could clog with rust debris and only allow cold water to hot side of fixtures. I'd also ask if neighbors are having same problems. If not, I've seen where a single handle faucet can cross connect and cause water to be cold or tempered. I've seen toilets fill with warm water because of this issue. If all else fails, contact your city building department and ask for help. It is unacceptable to have no hot water for sanitary reasons. Depending on where you live, it may be a health code violation.

It the cartridhead has been replaced 3 times by 3 different plumbers. Who all say they have no idea why it's leaking.
