Excellent video. I appreciate the patience you tackled this with and showing all the steps and trouble you had. Most of the time people don't want to show trouble because they want to look so skilled and make it look easy. By you showing the trouble you had, it made you look like a true professional.
I had a plumber come over and diagnosed my lack of hot water was due to a faulty hot water cartridge. He wanted to charge me $430! I watched your video and was able to replace it myself for $35 for the new part! Thank you!!!
Great to hear the video was helpful in your repair of your hot water situation and saved you some money. Having said that good plumbers are worth every penny when needed. Trades professionals have a lot of overhead to do the work they do plus they have gained priceless amount of specialized knowledge through their accumulated experience. It is understandable their services come at a considerable cost.
Lost my parents and live in the old home I grew up in. It’s in bad shape. For nearly 4 months I’ve showed with little hot water mixing in with the blast of cold water. Ice on the ground and heat provided by space heaters makes for tortured mornings! I kept thinking it was the faucet and not the hot water tank. I’m so glad I kept looking for the right UA-cam video! Thank you for making the job seem simple and possible for me to do the job. You’ve helped so many with this issue! May great returns for your time and shared wisdom be in abundants!
Thank you. Condolences regarding your parents. If you have hot water elsewhere like the sink, it probably is not a hot water heater issue. The valve could be the likely culprit. Best of luck with your repair and fixing up your home.
Absolutely the best set of steps for fixing a defective cartridge. Other than the 3 trips to Lowes for items mismatched or packaged with parts missing, I was able to do this myself with no cartridge repair experience. Thanks for your help!!!
Excellent video. Quality camera work. Good use of fast motion. Pause to show pieces. Clear explanations. Speaking clearly. Wish everything was this good.
Thanks great video, I didn't think to break the plastic tabs off. I like that you didn't talk on and on and got right to the task at hand..thanks again
Thanks for the video. I'm going to be doing this tomorrow and and preparing to encounter the same issues you did, as no project in my house goes as smoothly as other videos show it going.
Thanks for the video! We just moved into our "new" home two months ago, and have been using the guest bathroom to shower because we couldn't get hot water in ours. Nobody knew what the problem was, and we didn't want to call a plumber and drop all that money, if we didn't have to. I did some googling, and came across your video! Fixed it myself in less than an hour! Thank you!!
Perfect! Thanks! Especially like the time you took on reassembly. I had to take mine apart...then was doing other home improvements, when I got back to this, I couldn't quite remember the sequence of how to put mine back together, and it's similar to the one you demonstrated here. So, great. Thanks!
Only took me 6 or 8 videos to see what to do when the plastic HC tab and the bottom tab bottoms out on the pulling tool. Thanks for including that in your video!
Very useful tool, never realized that until today. I had always have difficulty to take that out specifically when stay there for years without being replaced. But I think the covering plate doesn't have to be removed to do the job.
Best instruction to use Moen puller on 1222 cartridge ( white plastic tap on top) , this white tap will prevent the tool to pull out further enough to get the cartridge out. The tool had been designed to pull out by turning the body nut . Keep turning until it run out of thread ( on the same time, just keep tool stays straight on line ). Then gently pull out on the handle . Many people using incorrectly this tool and messing thing up!
My water is luke warm and the dingle-berry who put the shower in, has the knob upside dwn. I was seconds from remodeling my whole bathroom jus to have the perfect walk-in shower. U might have jus saved me thousands.💃💃💃 Im feeling confident.
Nice video. This was a pain! I had the tool and kept pulling and pulling and ended up pulling only the metal rod in the middle out. The plastic sleeve was still stuck inside so I had to chisel and rip out the plastic pieces. Finally got it all cleaned out and thankfully after installing the new one my original problem was fixed.
Ok......soooo I wish I could thank you personally and tell you exactly what your demonstration video do for me. I seriously can't thank you enough. Such an easy fix that caused me some problems.....before I watched yours. I had watched a few others that just aggregated me and the situation. The first guy I watched used the cartridge puller the opposite way you did and took me almost an hour to get the cartridge out. You're explanation and demo was spot on. Wow Kevin I really appreciate this supportive comment. It has made my day. It is awesome to hear when one of my DIY videos has been useful and helpful to a viewer like yourself. Congrats on your repair and happy 2021 to you as well.
This dude is really repaired. Many other people's videos can be pulled out easily, which is obviously fake for the purpose of shooting videos, which is of no help to our maintenance. come on! You did very well!
I recently changed my broken cartridge, used a regular blow dryer at high heat for 5 to 8 minutes, afterwards used the plastic cap to twist a few times back and forth and pulled the old one out with a plier.
Thank you great job explaining everything i was able to fix my own shower knob with Your instructions with no hassle or guessing if i did the job wrong , thanks now my parents have the shower working
When I did mine the first time, I thought it was an easy job. I grabbed a cartridge puller and it won't came out. Until it's getting late and the main water valve is still shut-off so no tap water at home. I I called 2 plumbers and was the the mercy of coming over as I remember it was a weekend @ 6pm already. I paid 150cad and really saw the plumber prying the sides of the old cartridge with a turning motion of a vise grip while pulling it out. Mine was really tough and I guess it's worth it paying that price on a weekend. I've seen other videos they broke the stem and a tapped the inside of the cartridge and pulled it out from there. Either using the tap to pull it out or a bolt with 2 nuts and turning the nut as the bolt pulls it out. Now I'm afraid to replace it again myself or the cartridge in the other shower room in case it fails.
Yes it seems like "no good deed goes unpunished." In almost every case when I start a project I find out it is going to be more complicated then originally thought and/or find other items that need to be repaired along the way.
Thanks for the detailed video. My problem is my hot water is out; cold water is flowing not the hot side. So i definitely will change my own cartridge. Thanks for sharing. Much love from Louisiana!!!
Thanks your video was very helpful let me tell you a little about my experience tho lol well the shaft on my cartridge broke right off that's why I had to replace it only had the plastic part that has H/C to pull on lol did buy the puller tool helped a little but after like a good half half hour with needle nose pliers finally got it off whewww. The new one went in like a charm. Thanks again for you DIY video
Great video on how too change the cartridge, very thorough. Had one question tho, do you have to get the exact same kind of cartridge or can you get a cheaper genetic brand and use?
Now that you've mentioned it, this video was 100% helpful. The key stop system protects the hot water from scalding, and the knob doesn't stop northeast when it comes to the cold water. So that just leaves a metal plate that will display the instructions, a way to keep my old and forgetful father out of the way, and Ned's advice from "Spiderman: No Way Home" when it comes to counterclockwise. Thank you. Ian Robert Scott Laidlaw 70 Jemima Bay Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada R1A 0E2
Quick tip on removing a stuck old cartridge: heat up the old cartridge with a hair dryer for 5 minutes (or a heat gun). I used this trick 3 times and it worked like a charm. I try to remove the cartridge after 3 minutes and I add 1 extra minute of heating if it's still stuck. It never took longer than 6 minutes. Let the valve cool down before you install the new cartridge.
Anthony Carre. I tried heating up the stuck cartridge, sprayed WD and white vinegar and it still won’t budge at all. I found a product on Amazon called a AON Puller that hopefully will do the trick. It should be here on Monday. I really can’t afford to pay a plumber. Wish me luck
Thank you for the supportive comment. To confidently identify what replacement you need it might be best to pull the old shower valve cartridge out and take it with you to the home center or plumbing supply shop.
Thanks man, it must be the magic of video editing. Ha! I assure you there were a few choice words I may have blurted out when doing this shower fix that did not make it into the video. Replacing the cartridge can be pretty simple, it just depends how stuck in the old one is.
Thanks and perhaps a faulty shower cartridge is the problem if you are not getting hot water. It seems to be a fairly common issue and the cartridge replacement should probably even be considered a maintenance procedure after a certain number of years of use.
Good video. To day I change moen cartridge in my motel. After fixing still I am getting little leakage from my shower. Why this happened & how to fix it ?
Great video. Wish I had seen it before I replaced my entire valve. I had no idea there was a replaceable cartridge--I thought the entire thing had to be replaced. Ug. Wasted all day and a lot of money.
Thanks. Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with having made the repair a brand new shower valve. No you at least do not have to worry about changing the valve out again anytime soon. Congrats on your repair.
Great video....and works PERFECTLY for my QUESTION---> notice at timeline around 1:07 - 1:10 or so....as the screwdriver is being placed on the cartridge.... one can see the faucet/cartridge assembly VISIBLY moving in-and-out...as if it's mounted to the flexy fiberglass wall... but it seems the faucet is not firmly attached to a 2 x 4 cross brace ( or similar), behind. (LATER EDIT...wow, no kidding, as I view the entire vid, it is VERY clear that the valve is NOT solidly mounted to any kind of stud or brace behind the fiberglass). Mine is exactly the same way...I can sense faucet movement axially, and I have PEX connections, so the movement allowed may not pose a problem. With all that...IS IT a problem that the cartridge/faucet can move a small amount axially?.... or should I tear into this to refit a brace?
Thank your for the comment. In this case the shower valve did not seem anchored to a brace. I was a bit frustrated by this as I would expect it would be standard practice to anchor the valve during the house construction. With flexible plumbing I would imagine a little bit of movement is not likely to cause a catastrophic leak.
@@MrKistel ...wow ! ....thanks for the quick response to a video you did last year. Kudos to you for that...and for what you showed us to do here. I should mention that I can gain access from the opposite side of that same shower stall wall....saying, from the "other side" of where the shower stall wall is. I can ( if I have to) break up the drywall on that side, and maybe gain access for a brace "from behind". But being PEX, and with such small movement, I'm not sure it's worth it. But like you, I am surprised the valve wasn't solidly supported by some kind of brace or 2 x 4 cross piece between the studs.
Great Explanation. Have you experienced any case where no water coming down the spout initially and after the replacement of cartridge? I noticed no water output from the spout but only there is a shower supply. Renewed the spout… Renewed the cartridge..still No output from spout. Copper pipe from valve to spout appears clear. Are there any narrow channels in the valve which could get choked? Any leads?
Good video hopefully I fix it tommorow morning we just had ours snap off right at the end of our handle and I didnt have the tool to remove it so I drove a screw into the plastic and then used claws of my hammer to get it to come out. And the worse part is there are no shut offs to it. So water was off all night and I am covered in drywall from looking for shutoffs
I liked this video because really show step by step without problems, I have a problem in my Water pipe in the shower, every time when open the valve the water running brown color can you please tell me why, I will wait your answer
Victor, thanks for your comment. I am not sure what the issue is with you your shower plumbing but please do share once you figure out the problem is and the solution. Best of luck with your shower repair.
Our shower valve was stuck and we didn't have the tool, but by accident found a way to get it out without any effort. We had taken off the shower head and put an end cap on it since it was leaking some water and turned the main water valve back on to do laundry. In just a few minutes the stuck shower valve was pushed out by the water pressure (the retaining clip was removed). Just have some one ready to turn off the water supply when it comes out.
Thanks for sharing your tip on how to remove a stuck shower valve cartridge. Interesting concept using water pressure to help push cartridge out of the shower valve assembly. Hope everybody stayed dry during your fix.
Hello Mr. MrKistel. When I replace that, I need to turn off the water ( main line outside of the house and Hot water at water tank too ) that right or wrong? Thank you very much for the video It very good and professional.👍
Thank you. You need to make sure there is no water going to the shower plumbing when you replace the shower valve cartridge. IF there are accessible shutoffs then I would turn off the main line coming into the house.
Who ever roughed in this shower control valve did an awful job with keeping it fixed in position and it's not flush in place. It should not move like that ever.
Thank you. I have this exact shower valve and the exact same problem. I was going to just call a plumber but with the pandemic going on and cases starting to pop up in my county, I'd rather not have someone in the house. Ordering the parts now!
I have a problem with the hot water in my shower. It is not leaking ... however, when I turn the handle it just spins. I'm assuming the handle is worn out and needs to be replaced. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you. I changed a different brand cartridge and so wished I had a tool like this, I did it all just using hand muscle, glove and spatula. Where can you find this type of tool ?

Renewed the spout…
Renewed the cartridge..still
No output from spout.
Best of luck with your shower valve repair. Sounds like it has been a messy job! Did the screw hold well enough to pry out with the hammer easily?
@@MrKistel it worked out great except it drips from time to time
I just fixed my tub and officially have hot water again!! Thanks!
Awesome and congrats! Did you facet cartridge come out easily or was it a bear to remove?
MrKistel It was a BEAST!! Took me a solid hour with the tool.
Excellent!!! Thank you!!! Exactly what I needed to see.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for sharing

Victor, thanks for your comment. I am not sure what the issue is with you your shower plumbing but please do share once you figure out the problem is and the solution. Best of luck with your shower repair.
Thank you to help us to share your experience, very interesting video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
@@MrKistel Water stayed in the shower and no one was wet

Very informative
Glad you think so! Hope your shower valve repair goes smoothly.
Nice work.. Thank you
Thank you too!
It is a 7/64 Allen wrench in case anyone needs to know this.
thanks for the tip
great instructive video, nice pace really helped me out
Awesome to hear and thanks for watching the shower repair video.
Hello Mr. MrKistel.
When I replace that, I need to turn off the water ( main line outside of the house and Hot water at water tank too ) that right or wrong?
Thank you very much for the video
It very good and professional.👍
Thank you. You need to make sure there is no water going to the shower plumbing when you replace the shower valve cartridge. IF there are accessible shutoffs then I would turn off the main line coming into the house.
Moen replaces these cartridges for free. That one is 1222-b.You can bring the old one to Home Depot and they will give you a new one for free.Cheers
Thanks for the shower cartridge replacement tip Brian.
brian leblanc really i just paid 50$ for it i didnt know that
mine is a Peerless ....same deal. The factory sent me a new one free.
Blind leading the blind. Good luck!
excellent! using this today
best of luck
Hands down a great video!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope your shower has hot water again.
How do I know the size of cartridges number??? Please show me. Thanks you
Might need to remove it first to confirm the cartridge you need to replace.
Perfect explanation thanks you
wow Thanks for the comment and watching this shower repair video.
I was able to remove just with included white plastic tool. I twisted 45 degree and then while twisting back and forth pulled by pliers
Congrats on your DIY shower fix!
Thanks for your video
Thanks again
Thank you for watching and commenting on the no hot water repair video.
thanks for including the struggle!
Thanks! Haha, I am sure I edited out a bunch of bad words.
What was the Allen wrench size? My hex screw is super rusted and 2.5mm is just too small. 3mm and 1/8" are both too big. Any suggestions?
Thank you! I have issues with cold water! I think I can do this on my own! Woot!
Awesome, Thanks for commenting and best of luck with your cold water shower fix.
Hi, is this the same fix if it's my cold water that doesn't work at all?
Thanks you are professional
So nice of you, thanks for the supportive comment.
Who ever roughed in this shower control valve did an awful job with keeping it fixed in position and it's not flush in place. It should not move like that ever.
Thanks a lot.
Most welcome!
Thank you. I have this exact shower valve and the exact same problem. I was going to just call a plumber but with the pandemic going on and cases starting to pop up in my county, I'd rather not have someone in the house. Ordering the parts now!
Thanks Paul, this shower fix is not too difficult of a DIY repair. Let me know if your old shower valve comes out easy or if it is bound up.
@@MrKistel It was very difficult to get out. I had to twist and pull quite hard and dig out gasket pieces afterward like you did.
Can you use different types of moen cartridges besides the one you were using. I have same kind of shower hand lije yours.
You may be able to find a generic brand version equivalent.
Great help for me
Great to hear
I have a problem with the hot water in my shower. It is not leaking ... however, when I turn the handle it just spins. I'm assuming the handle is worn out and needs to be replaced. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you. I changed a different brand cartridge and so wished I had a tool like this, I did it all just using hand muscle, glove and spatula. Where can you find this type of tool ?
Thanks, the shower valve cartridge tool can be sourced in the video description section.
@@MrKistel Thank you , I'll check it out.
