Funny thing, in 2023 the S1 has most of the features of the S1H now including anamorphic IBIS, 4k 60 at 10 bit and 6k recording. It’s a baby S1H 😃

Great video! Big thanks to @Dennis Schmitz also for keeping the Panasonic feet to the fire re: the ghosting. It's a real problem and I hope they get it sorted soon, along with the issue some people are having with corrupted files. I know the GH5 had it and it got fixed in firmware with v2.0, so it's more a question of when. Hopefully around NAB time (even though it's cancelled).
I chose the S1H myself as I'm a narrative filmmaker who needs DCI4K etc, plus the OLPF stops moire. Not to mention unlimited recording time and no compromises re: modes etc.

Personally, I would take neither. The GH5 is $1300 brand new and when you get to the point of needing the image for professional use, you are going to light the scene anyway, almost fully negating the advantage of the big sensor. For the price of S1H one would buy pretty much the whole GH5 system, lens(es), recorder, cards and all...

Hi, I'm a documentary filmmaker for cinema and I have the S1.
But I have three major problems with it. My question here: Does the S1H has the same?
1.) The rec button of the S1 cannot trigger my external recorder from ATOMOS, because my S1 doesn't put out timecode over HDMI or a trigger.
So when I want to shoot simultaniusly internaly (backup) and externally I have to press two times rec. Which is a pain and sometimes to slow to react in shooting in a documentary.
So the S1H should be a winner here, because it has at least timecode and I think also a trigger - right?
2.) I would love to shoot in some difficult situations without an external monitor/recorder. The great EVF would allow that.
But I shoot most of my films for cinema in cinemascope (not anamorphic). But there is really no options in the S1 for framing markers inside the camera. Only helping lines for photo.
That is really a shame for a video oriented camera. So I cannot frame my picture without a monitor.
Does the S1H has this option? I think I read somewhere that it also not have this feature.
3.) The switch to APS-C mode is not assignable to function buttons. You have to go into the menu and click twice.
Simply to long for some situation where you have to change it fast or when the camera is on a gimbal.
An my Sony a7M3 you can have this switch simply by pressing a button. This is a joy to use.
When you record with external recorder only you can change it during record - like a cut.
Does the S1H has this option?
    Thanks for the help
    WOLFGANG

With the latest 2021 firmware update, these two cameras are even closer than before. I think of the S1H like the GH5 and the S1 like the G9. They're so similar that 99% of buyers would be happy with the cheaper model. And, for the other 1%, the Netflix approval is probably what pushes the S1H over the top more than anything else.
Due to the unreliable autofocus, neither of these cameras makes much sense for any situation when the camera is unmanned, so look elsewhere if you're a vlogger.
All of this competition is great for consumers though because it's forcing all of the manufacturers to make their stills cameras more capable for video.

To even compete with the S1H you have to rig up the BMPCC6k and it still won't be a full frame camera. It's not as good at taking photos as the S1H either. Also the S1H is Netflix approved. The S1H is just all around better and more convenient.

WTF?! I don't understand camera manufacturers these days.
Adding Temporal Noise Reduction without any option to turn it off is CRAZY!
Sometimes it feels like those cameras are not made for professional/skilled people, but for the smartphone-crowd, who might want simple controls and less options.
The Picture Profiles in those cameras are super stupid and unnecessarily limited as well.
We have cryptic names such as "scenery" or "portrait" or "CineD", and NO information about tone value curves and other details of those profiles.
Also the order is chaotic, and there's no way to remove/blend-out stuff, you don't use.
Instead of putting in those stupid profiles + contrast slider (+ additional highlight/shadow setting, which is stupidly not part of a profile), they should let us freely define our own contrast curves and save them as presets.
Saturation and HUE Shifts (by LUTs) should be included in those presets as well.
Especially HUE Shift is needed to get rid of those pinkish lips, the GH5 is producing for no reason.
(This is not fixable with white balance or any other in camera setting. It's also already in the RAW files. Red Lips are shifted towards pink.)
    Oh ... sorry for ranting.
It's just, that I don't understand, how companys can produce such sophisticated (and in many ways great) tools, but then completely FAIL at such easy things.

Can't recall if I mentioned this earlier, but it's worth repeating. The AF is terrible on both these cameras. But for fully manual shooters (like myself) that means next to nothing. What does mean something are 1) ability to punch in to check focus while rolling and 2) ability to use peaking to maintain critical focus on moving subjects/objects while rolling.
The S1 has the inexplicable anomaly of peaking that virtually vanishes, especially in flatter profiles, as soon as you hit record. This is actually the reverse of the GH5. It's peaking actually boosts as soon as you hit record.
Fortunately, the S1H maintains usable peaking while rolling. No. It's not as good as the X-T4 peaking (nothing is) but if you depend on peaking to track subjects while rolling the S1 will not be your camera. That's why I sold mine.
In addition, to add insult to injury, Panasonic did not provide a punch-in while rolling. No AF, no punch in, no peaking---could Panasonic possibly do more to keep you from achieving a correctly focused image and keep it during the shot?!? If so, tell me how. Black the screen out and just have to totally guess in the dark.
Of course, neither camera, last I checked, has the ability to punch in while rolling---Fuji does, and it's great!

Got a question I haven’t been able to find the answer to. When I used the s1h, when touching screen to focus, I then had to press the af button actually make it focus. Was there something wrong with the s1h I was using or a setting I missed? That isn’t the same behavior as the gh cameras, so I thought it was really weird.

Amazing video Gerald! When I made the choice to get the S1H over the S1, the 4k60 and HD120 10-bit options were the main reasons. I don't like shooting V-log in 8-bit as I get varied results, and as a documentary shooter it's hard to expose every shot perfectly. Having 10-bit for all shooting modes allows me to shoot in V-log all the time for my shooting situations and speeds up my workflow a lot. Also coming from the GH4 and GH5s, the articulating screen was something I didn't want to lose. Sometimes I'm filming in such a tight spot that I have to move my screen in a very awkward position just to get the shot. Without an articulating screen, this isn't possible.

its not , you can use a mirror , infect a mirror is in my kit , because when i shoot with on camera flash , and want to bounce it i use a mirror and its much easier then grabbing the bag , setting up commander , stand , the flash , get it all to work and then shoot , sometimes there is no time for that , so i use a mirror or a mirror like surface . I also cut off one LED light bulb plastic cover , its round and i cut it off put it on flash as a disperser , there are also flashes that can be purchased like this , but most are branded and expensive , and no one is paying me to work . I already lost half of my lenses , they broke , and if someone doesn't pay something they will not get the images , and maybe then they will realize something they got for free , is not free , gear brakes , even if you do it for family like i do . My friend has a flash for his crop Nikon body , and it has a round disperser on top , makes a lot of difference but he is payed but the local governor , to take pictures of him for media . so he got 400$ flash for nothing , i on the other hand use a mirror , and a cut of light bulb disperser .Point being , there is always a way .

I'm late to the party here as I stumbled across this video looking for something else. Nice video and glad the ghosting issue had a fix :)
There's one point I want to clarify. Since the introduction of Dual Native ISO by Panasonic in 2014, I've spent a bit of time with the Pana engineers and got a lot of early hands on with their cinema cameras. Lets put aside the ISO variance in this video as to noise as we all now the S1H was updated. The test included here to compare the noise of both at different ISO's is an apples to apples test, whereby both are operated the exact same way. Understandable. However the S1H has another option. So dual native ISO is present on the S1 and S1H, but it works differently on both models.
Let's assume Vlog setting for all the below.
On the S1, as you dial the ISO up (gain up) it auto switches from the low to high iso setting at ISO4000. Yes, we are all familiar with that.
The S1H works differently. Whilst there's an auto setting that will make your camera work like the S1, I'd never recommend using it. On the S1H low setting base you can gain up from 640 to 5000ISO. Then in High base setting you can gain up from 4000 base to 51200 ISO. The important difference here is that on the High base ISO setting you can also gain down. Set your base to High (4000iso) and then gain down to 2000ISO for example. What you're actually doing here is reducing the SNR i.e. there's less noise.
This is easy to compare for anyone who owns an S1H. Set ISO at low base and gain up to 2000ISO and record. Set ISO High base and and gain down to 2000ISO and record. View them on a 4K monitor side by side. The result is a cleaner image. This is also how the Varicam35, LT and EVA1 work, but again not how the S1 works. There is a clear advantage to doing it this way.
Anyway, just thought I'd clarify that.
