Huge respect for shining a light on these Lumix cams. I entered the industry as a filmmaker and migrated from Sony DV tape, Canon 5DII and finally ended up with Lumix starting with the GH4. I currently own the S5II and these camera have such incredible bang-per-buck value. I know these vids may not get the views of a Sony/ Canon system but looking at tech outside of the big three is very useful for for fellow creatives and there's a lot of integrity to not be purely incentivised by views. Great work!

The OLPF is one of the main reasons why I haven't upgraded from the S1H to the S5iiX. The S5II has a lot of moire in fine details to the point where it gets obnoxious. I sometimes to client work for tailors and clothing designers and the OLPF is pretty much required for these types of works. Fingers crossed for the S1H 2

Thanks for the comparison video. I think a lot of people were complaining that there is a BIG image quality difference when using the standard picture profiles (i.e. anything BESIDES v-log or hlg). Most say that there is heavy noise reduction and that Panasonic used increased edge sharpness to compensate. I don't know of that is true or not, but it would be great if you could compare profiles like standard, natural, cined2 and such between the S5II and the S1H. Thanks in advance.

This shows how incredibly good both cameras are today. I’ve been shooting with the S5II since it came out about a year ago and for the price there isn’t anything out there that competes with it.
I do wish we could get the new features from the G9II via a firmware, but only time will tell. Looking forward to more Lumix content!

Also, I want to show some love to the S1. You can get them now used for a steal. Not the best auto-focus but if you're mostly a manual-focus guy like me, probably the most outstanding 6K image quality you can buy today for the price. Not to mention the camera is built like a tank to the highest professional specs. I know everyone pushes smaller/lighter as better but it's just not always true. The larger body size is not only much easier (for an adult man) to grip and maneuver, but the weight gives me much smoother handheld shots (especially if there's any wind, this is a stability beast compared to my lighter cameras) and even my gimble shots are smoother (albeit not for wimps and used mainly for my most critical shots so I don't tire out).
Also, the psychological impact really affects the user. I feel more legit when I use this and I've noticed clients always take me more seriously when I whip out an S1 vs. a smaller camera. I earnestly believe I can charge more! But above all else, the S1 image quality still holds its own to 95% of what I see being shot today by independent creators using mirrorless cameras/smaller setups.

I had asked another channel if phase detect auto focus is a thing that could be updated for an S1H in software, because the S52X has it, and was told that it is not possible because phase detect must be built into a sensor. So, the sensors of the S52X and S1H are completely different. I love my S1H, and I’m looking forward to the new S1H2 (or whatever new cinema monster Panasonic has in the works for us)!
As an aside, I used some stock footage recently that had pretty bad moire. I was able to completely get rid of it in DaVinci Resolve, amazing.

if they make the S1h/ii with the (Phase Focus) + (Fan) + (SSD out) + (Baked in Luts) + all other Panasonic goodies (Waveform etc )
then it would be the ultimate professionals Hybrid.
Both Film and TV + Photo journalists would love it. I found the colour stabiity to be better than other comparable brands.
I got the G9ii for now (It replaced the S74). I will get the S1H-2 for sure...

I definitely see a difference in quality and dynamic range on the S1H, the image looks better than the S5iiX in most of the examples - And with the other additional extras on the body (better EVF and screen etc), it is definitely the better purchase, and autofocus is something that can be added to a cinema camera with many tools on the market today. I am also thinking isn't image stabilisation better on the S1H?

lumix should've added OLPF in s5iix, since it's video centric

I do remember something being said at the S1H debut about the sensor reading out in 14-bit mode for video, whereas the other cameras read out at 12-bit. Made sense at the time as the S1 and S5 had slightly faster readout speeds. Maybe this has something to do with the DR and image differences.
Also, I question the assumption that the addition of PDAF is what's caused the slight degradation in the S5ii/S5iix image processing. I think it's more likely a limitation with processing power- I bet a faster processor would be able to handle AF duties without having to use a simpler/uglier processing algorithm. But the S5ii/S5iix are after all very affordably priced, that savings might have come out of the processor budget.

    • @hanjoe-han1563
      @hanjoe-han1563 11 місяців тому +5

The reason that Panasonic said they held off on using phase detect sensors is because of the degradation in image quality that comes with it. The processor in the S5II and X is a brand new processor that they developed in partership with Leica (not a company that cuts cornners). Because auto focus has been a pain point for many youtubers, some of the other changes and improvements made with these camera are often over looked.

Quantum efficiency of modern CMOS sensors is already relatively high (way above 50%), so there isn't too much room for improvements, in regards to DR, from a physical point of view. The biggest loss of photons happens at the Bayer mask, but there is currently no way around using a Bayer mask for colour sensors.

@@edonave Minor: yes, major (like several stops DR): no. Active sensor cooling could be a thing to bring down further the amplifier noise, for example, but it comes with potential condensation issues. BSI (don't wasting precious sensor front space for circuitry any more) will help , too, and is used already in many cameras.

Interesting stuff. CineD did tests on the S5ii with similar results...basically that there is a slight penalty in image robustness to implement the autofocus of the S5ii and S5iix. The original S5, S1 and S1H hold up just a hair better to a heavy grade, but not that most people would notice really. Personally I just find that the S5ii/x has a slightly more over-processed looking image just by a tiny bit, again most people would never notice so just up to your priorities I guess. I find it an interesting reminder though that just because there are cameras coming out all the time, it doesn't mean you are automatically getting a better camera just because it is a newer model. Feels like we've reached peak camera 2 or 3 years ago now, and really it is about what you shoot with your camera rather than what camera you shoot with.

I have had both for over a year. S5 has the recording limits in 10bit recording modes, so that sucks. S52 has much much improved Autofocus, open gate, and a clever fan design that eliminates overheating. S5 has the slightly better image. Less green and slightly less noise in the shadows if you try to raise them in post. We use both interchangeably. Only time I pick the S52 over the s5 is for gimbal work because of the better AF. I have never had the S5 overheat BTW. But that 30min limit can be a pain.

I take your point on lack of development in 4 years, but in the context of escalating camera prices, I find re-use of the 24mp sensor a positive. It means videographers are not having to re-equip with new lenses because the old ones lack resolution, and those of us using vintage lenses never get moiré! Great comparison either way.
